ruling in that case. the man accused in the shooting death of former new orleans saints player will smith has been indicted on a second degree murder charge. cardell hayes also faces attempted murder for rounding smith's wife. hayes says he was not the aggressor and pleaded not guilty to all charges. smith was shot seven times and his wife hit twice. investigators in minnesota are reportedly trying to determine if prince's death was caused by an overdose. a source tells the "associated press" they're also looking into whether a doctor was prescribing the singer drugs during his final weeks and if the doctor was on the plane with prince when it had to make an emergency stop a week before he died. meanwhile, authorities have obtained a search warrant to prince's estate but the details will be sealed for now. and the maker of an antidote for opiate overdoses is offering the medication to all high schools for free. narcan can quickly reverse the dangerous effects of an overdose

takeoff, already traveling 140 miles an hour, when suddenly, another delta jet is crossing the runway. the atlanta controller ordering a takeoff abort. the pilot slams on the brakes. the aircraft were just over a mile apart, but only seconds at that speed. the controller knew he blundered. >> sorry about that. that was my mistake, guys. >> okay, yeah, we're going to exit here. >> reporter: the pilots called it an administrative mistake. >> obviously, stopping and having your airplane from a high rate of speed in a short period of time is going to heat up the brakes. that's what it's done. >> it was, i think, a little bit nerve wracking for the pilots as well as everybody on that plane. >> reporter: the pilots let the brakes cool down at the gate. mechanics checked them out and the same aircraft with passengers did take off for miami. david kerley, reagan washington airport, abc news. >> what a frightening scene

the u.s. is condemning the new round of bloodshed in syria that's killed more than 60 people over the last day. hours of air strikes has left the city of aleppo in complete ruins. one of the few hospitals that was still standing is now destroyed. among the victims killed, one of the city's last pediatricians. aid groups warn this latest round of violence has put aleppo on the brink of a humanitarian disaster. here at home, the pentagon has disciplined 16 u.s. military personnel including one general officer for the bombing last october of this, doctors without borders civilian hospital in northern afghanistan. it killed 42 people. those punishments include letters of reprimand which could end their military careers. however, no criminal charges have been filed. three people connected to the terror attack in san bernardino are in federal custody this morning. the brother of the shooter, his wife and her sister all charged in a marriage fraud scheme. abc's brian ross has the details.

>> shots fired. >> reporter: new criminal charges grow out of the massive investigation of the san bernardino terror attack that killed 14 people. anybody who had any connection to the husband/wife team of attackers, syed farook, and his pakistani wife, was put under tight scrutiny for any possible wrongdoing. in february, fbi agents raided the family home, removing files and documents, leading to the arrest of three members of farook's family. farook's brother, raheel, a decorated u.s. navy veteran, his wife, tatiana, and tatiana's sister, mariya, all charged with a marriage fraud scam to get a green card for mariya, a russian citizen. >> the illegal immigration activities of these individuals never would have been discovered were it not for their involvement with the san bernardino attackers. >> reporter: when the fbi arrested farook's best friend, enrique marquez for providing the guns used in the attacks, agents say marquez admitted he was being paid to go through

with a sham marriage with mariya, the other russian sister. authorities found mariya was living with a man in los angeles who she said was the father of her child and not marquez. >> the government provided no evidence that any of the three were involved in any way in the actual attacks or knew about them in advance. brian ross, abc news, new york. much of the nation's midsection was dealt another round of punishing storms with at least 18 new tornados reported across six states from california to kentucky. just outside of indianapolis, powerful straight line winds and a possible tornado cut a path of devastation through parts of boone county, indiana. it uprooted trees and destroyed homes as well as other buildings. further south, much of the gulf coast was battered by torrential rains triggering flash floods. in gulfport, mississippi, the flood waters were so deep they forced crews to roll out specially designed land and water rescue vehicles to ferry

a campaign staffer at trump tower opened an envelope containing a suspicious white powder. the campaign immediately called police. three workers were isolated and evaluated but the substance turned out to be harmless. last month, a threatening letter with white powder was sent to one of trump's sons. that too was found not to be dangerous. back on the west coast where three people connected to the terror attack in san bernardino are in federal custody this morning. the brother of shooter syed farook, his wife tatiana and her sister mariya are all charged with marriage fraud. investigators say they were engaged in a scam to get a green card for mariya and not charged with anything about the mass shootings in december in san bernardino that killed 14 people and injured 22 over others. in syria, more than 60 people dead this morning at the city of aleppo. it is the worst blood shed since the partial cease fire got under way. hours of air strikes left the city in ruins. one of the few hospitals that was still standing is now destroyed. it was supported by doctors

without boarders. focusing on child medicine. among the victims was one of the city's last pediatricians. aid groups warn this latest round of violence has put aleppo on the brink of a humanitarian disaster. a man who terrorized a baltimore tv station for hours while wearing an animal costume is in stable condition this morning after police shot him during the siege. he claimed he was rigged with explosives but police now say they were just chocolate bars wrapped in foil. abc's pierre thomas has more. >> reporter: the terror starting at 1:20 p.m. a man enters the lobby of the baltimore fox affiliate, claiming he has a bomb. he comes face to face with security guard, jourael apostolides. and what did the device look like? >> wires, two circuit boards, leading to other grayish areas on his body that could potentially be explosive.

he had a metal detonator in his left hand and that's why i couldn't determine whether it was fake or real. >> reporter: eyewitnesses say the 25-year-old suspect, dressed in an animal jumpsuit, is rambling about the government and black holes, saying, while he doesn't want to hurt anybody, he's ready to die. >> he had a flash drive with him, that he wanted to air. >> reporter: employees seen evacuating the station, while the security guard keeps the suspect calm for about 30 minutes in the lobby. >> got some action. got some action. man's walking out. man's walking out. >> reporter: just past 3:00 p.m., the s.w.a.t. team approaches the suspect, now outside. >> man's out in the street. >> reporter: the first shot rings out. the suspect continues to walk forward. then a second shot. and a third. the fourth one bringing him down. >> we heard several explosions, boom, boom, boom, and then he went down. >> reporter: he is still alive, but not cooperating. >> right now, he still poses a significant public safety threat. >> reporter: a robot attempting

to disarm him, and by 5:00 p.m., word the suspect is being moved from the scene by ambulance. authorities say he's in the hospital in serious but stable condition. after all those hours of fear, those wires weren't covering a bomb. they were hiding candy bar police say it looked just like the real thing and they could take no chances. they're still investigating looking for a motive. pierre thomas, abc news, baltimore. we're going to turn our focus now to the storm threat faced by millions of americans from the southern plains to the mid-atlantic. driving rain has triggered flash floods along the gulf coast in gull port, mississippi, up to 10 inches of rain turned streets into raging rivers. forcing police to roll out a a specially designed rescue vehicle to ferry stranded residents to safety. and farther north, powerful winds and a possible tornado cut a path of destruction destroying homes as well as other buildings there. nearly two dozen tornadoes reported across six states from california to kentucky over the past 24 hours including two at the same time in iowa.

and in arizona, it was a dust storm that caused some major problems east of tucson. the storm brought visibility to zero triggering multiple vehicle pile-ups and forcing the closure of interstate 10. that's near san simone. the closure forces drivers to go more than 100 miles out of their way to void the storm. the pileups involved at least one tractor trailer and one dozen vehicles. meanwhile the epa will shell out about $1 million to compensate states, towns and native american tribes for damages from a toxic mine spill. the agency accidentally triggered a 3 million gallon spill while doing clean-up work in an abandoned colorado mine last august that polluted waterways in three states turning them into rivers of orange muck. the spill also destroyed crops and livestock. so the list is growing against north carolina's controversial transgender bathroom law. the ncaa is announcing major events including final four will not be held in cities and arenas

allowing discrimination against the lgbt community. the state is currently scheduled to host the first two rounds of the men's basketball tournament next year but no word this morning if that will change. and round one of the nfl draft is in the books. amazing five players from the ohio state buckeyes were picked last night, including three in the top ten. >> so the first two picks were quarterbacks. as expected. carson wentz of north dakota state went second to the eagles and number one overall was cal quarterback jared goff chosen by the los angeles rams. >> it's been a long process. it's been a long four months or so. and for it to be finally come to a close now, i'm ready to take the next step into a professional football career and work as hard as i can to be as successful as i can. >> so then there's a guy who is having the worst night and the best night ever.

again, many of the hard hit areas from just a couple of days ago. damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes, all those modes of severe weather again possible along with heavy rain which could trigger flash flooding. lots of tropical moisture meeting up with dry, hot air. much of oklahoma and texas will be under the threat in the afternoon and also into tonight. northeast, the showers much lighter, but they will be problematic in terms of causing slippery conditions and some travel delays along the 95. more rain returning this weekend with the severe weather continuing in the deep south. back to you. >> thank you. turning now to politics and what was a wild scene outside a trump rally in southern california. >> hundreds of protesters jammed the streets in costa mesa last night, they stomped on squad cars, hurling rocks and blocked a highway entrance ramp. as police in riot gear swooped in. many of them were protesting trump's stance on immigration. inside the rally, trump spoke to 18,000 people and he brought families of victims murdered by

undocumented immigrants. >> we don't have a country anymore. you know, i'm looking at statistics where your crime numbers are so crazy, they're going through the roof. we can't have it anymore. >> trump is still keeping an eye on indiana ahead of tuesday's primary, but he will remain in california for today to address state gop officials. ted cruz is fending off a fiery attack. this time it's not from the donald trump. >> it's coming from john boehner former house speaker, who spoke fondly of trump during a talk at stanford university calling him his texting buddy. but when students asked him about ted cruz, that's when he had a few choice words for the senator. >> how about ted cruz? [laughter] >> lucifer in the flesh. from in washington, i have as many democrat friends as i do republican friends. i get along with almost everybody. but i've never worked with a more miserable son of a [ bleeped ].

>> truth of the matter is i don't know the man. i've met john boehner two or three times in my life. >> cruz went on to say boehner was letting his inner trump come out. boehner and cruz clashed politically in 2013 over cruz's support of the government shutdown. as for the democrats, hillary clinton is returning to the campaign trail after a two-day break and a string of victories. clinton still focusing on the remaining primaries but her campaign is pivoting to the general election and a likely match-up against donald trump. bernie sanders is still hoping for a win in indiana, but as his path to the nomination narrows he's hinting of a future role in shaping the party. a forensic psychologist says the man who admits killing three people at a planned parenthood clinic is delusional and not competent to stand trial. robert dear is charged with 179 counts for his hours long rampage at a colorado springs clinic last november. dear interrupted his competency hearing several times shouting he was a warrior for the babies. the judge has not yet issued a

ruling in that case. the man accused in the road rage shooting death of former new orleans saints' player, will smith, has been indicted on a second degree murder charge. cardale hayes also faces attempted murder for wounding smith's wife. hayes says he was not the aggressor and pleaded not guilty to all charges. smith was shot seven times and his wife hit twice. investigators in minnesota are reportedly trying to determine if prince's death was caused by an overdose. a source tells the "associated press" they're also looking into whether a doctor was prescribing the singer drugs during his final weeks and if the doctor was on the plane with prince when it had to make an emergency stop a week before he died. meanwhile, authorities have obtained a search warrant to prince's estate but the details will be sealed for now. and the maker of an antidote for opioid overdoses is offering the medication to all high schools for free. narcan can quickly reverse the dangerous effects of an overdose by preventing the drug from depressing the nervous system.
