>> announcer: live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. the circus has come to town. >> oh, boy, i felt like i was crossing the border, actually. >> it wasn't exactly a border crossing but donald trump had a tough time getting to the gop convention today all in an effort to avoid hundreds of protesters. despite their best efforts, those protests turned violent, punches thrown, several people taken into custody. good afternoon, everybody. i'm larry biel. >> i'm ama daetz. let's look near the hyatt reese enescy in burlingame where the california republican convention is under way right now. you see a lot of people out there. the protesters have dispersed but there is still a heaviy police present.

what's what you're looking at right now. >> lots of police on the scene. the protests got under way early this morning, hours before donald trump arrived, continued long after he left the bay area. we are rilive from burlingame. some tense moments outside earlier today. >> reporter: very tough day, larry. very tense out here. a total of five people were arrested, one injured. we're not sure if that one person was actually a civilian or a police officer. now, let me tell you that security was not about to allow donald trump to get even close to those protesters. today we saw something that we've sell bomb ever seen this is what happened when republican supporter nick tried to cross a line full of trump protesters. eventually, protesters pushed him him away as he said he should be

allowed to enter through the hotel. >> who are you to tell me that? >> you know what? i'm telling you that. >> i have the right. >> if you don't like a candidate, by all means you don't have to like them. but to block people on a public sidewalk is utterly absurd. >> this is peaceful. we are not here to assault anyone. we are here to make a presence, to make us known, to raise black people's voices. >> reporter: protesters chainlinked themselves in front of the hyatt reese enescy in burlingame, forcing the closure of old bay shore highway. a small army of law enforcement and private security kept everyone a very tense distance away. a few were pushed back. >> as we were able to go up there, they were pushed us and grabbing us for no reason. >> reporter: with this amount of protesters, republican candidate donald trump and his entourage were forced to stop their cars on highway 101. from sky7 hd, they are seen walking through two concrete barriers and entering through the back of the hotel.

trump quickly departed the hotel following his speech, yet the demonstrations continued. at one point a protester tried to burn an american flag. the flag was eventually taken away by another demonstrator. >> this is not the america we want. we want inclusion, love, kindness, compassion. >> reporter: this weekend's convention is expected to attract more protesters. in burlingame, abc 7 news. >> once trump actually did get inside, he gave a speech roughly 25 minutes long. trump blasted ted cruz and john kasich and touched on many of his core campaign issues. he also very briefly talked about the importance of the upcoming california primary. >> you people have been fantastic. on june 7th, you have a big, big day because the world is going to be watching. the world is watching pretty much every tuesday. >> ohio governor john kasich will speak at the convention tonight. this afternoon he held a town hall at san francisco's

commonwealth club, had a heated exchange with somebody who asked him about his views on marriage equality. >> i'm not in favor of -- >> our next questioner -- >> no. let me finish. i'm not in favor of that. i'm not in favor of discrimination against anybody. >> they're using religion. >> but they are not me, okay? they are not me. i'm telling you my view. >> kasich's address tonight at the state gop convention is at 7:00. ted cruz will speak tomorrow at noon. >> donald trump's appearance in burlingame caused a stir both in person and on social media. >> kristen sze is here with some of the reaction. >> i can tell you law enforcement was ready for any type of reaction. san mateo county sheriff's office tweeted this picture of their morning briefing along with police. they were ready when things started to heat up between trump supporters and protesters. abc 7 news reporter matt keller was live on facebook with one confrontation. >> [ bleep ]!

[ bleep ]! >> no violence! >> reporter: maybe we've found the one trump supporter who decided to walk through the trump protesters. that's what happens. >> as you might imagine, there are polarizing comments on social media about the protests. plain as day that trump is reviled in california aside from paid fans. dan says, when you burn american flags and fly mexican flags, that is anti-american. the trump protests are really scary. our country is so divided. no matter what happens in november, we're all losers. some of the reactions out there. ama? hillary clinton's daughter chelsea traveled to lexington, kentucky, to open her mother's headquarters there. democrats vote there next month. the stanford grad touted her mom's campaign ideas and called the republican rhetoric, quote,

racist, sexist and iz laum aphobic. >> bernie sanders rallied outside the indiana statehouse. the vermont senator blasted what he called bad trade policies that he says enable corporations to move work to countries with lower wages. that rally was organized by unions protesting the decision by air conditioning giant carrier to close two indiana plants and shiflt that work to mexico. be the first to know when news breaks by downloading the abdz 7 news app. the app is free for apple and android devices. a car fire briefly blocked all of the eastbound lanes of the san mateo hayward bridge this afternoon. sky7 hd was overhead earlier showing the backup there. that accident occurred when a white pickup truck hit the right side of the wall of the bridge and then caught fire. the resulting backup stretched for miles into san mateo, all lanes have sense reopened. let's check on our weather now on this friday. this is a live look from our east bay hills camera. >> spencer christian now here

with the accuweather forecast and our upcoming weekend. >> larry and ama, i have to hold on to the hail up here on the roof. it is so windy, although we have pleasantly clear skies across the area. here's live doppler 7 hd. some beautiful but breezy afternoons, almost blustery across the bay area. we have a wind advisory from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. tomorrow for the bay area hills. that's all of the higher elevations above 1,000 feet and all the way into the central valley, in fact, gusts may reach or exceed 45 miles per hour and there's a possibility of downed trees and local power outages. here is a look at current wind gusts, 41 miles per hour at sfo right now where we also have an airport weather warning for high winds. delays only 15 minutes or less. as you can see, many other locations have gusts between 20, 25, even higher miles per hour. the view from our rooftop shows clear skies, 60 degrees here in san francisco, mid to upper 60s, 55 at half moon bay.

here's the view, blue skies over the bay from mt. tam, currently 76 in santa rosa, 70 novato, low 70s in fairfield and concord and 68 at livermore. i'll show you in just a minute the warm weekend oming our way along with the continuation of some pretty breezy weather. larry and ama? >> thank you. santa clara county prosecutors say one of two brothers accused of kiing their parents shot his father at least a dozen times inside the garage. 22-year-old hasib golam rabbi then shot his mother. both boys were charged with the murder of their parents. both pleaded not guilty and remain held without bail. coming up on abc 7 news at 5, the prayer service held today for victims. a santa clara county inmate housed at the ellwood correctional facility in

milpitas died after falling from a second story walkway this morning. the 72-year-old was taken to a medical center where he was pronounced dead. the sheriff's office said the inmate left a suicide note. a spokesperson says the agency will conduct an investigation into the death to confirm it was a suicide. a san jose man with several outstanding warrants is expected to survive after he was shot by police during a traffic stop in milpitas. milpitas police say this happened around 1:00 a.m. investigators say the suspect had several outstanding warrants. he tried to run away, soon was arrested at interstate 680. an investigation into why the officer shot the suspect is under way. today san jose police selected a company to supply the department's controversial body cameras. the city recommended the contract go to taser international. the decision still needs final approval from the city council. officers will start wearing cameras under a pilot program in june. a magnitude 2.9 earthquake

shook the east bay just after 2:00 this afternoon. the epicenter was in san leandro near 580. no damage reported. a northern california seismic expert is back from ecuador after surveying damage caused by this month's 7.8 magnitude earthquake. structural engineer kit knee area moto says half of the country's infrastructure saw damage from the april 16th kuwait. nia moto says should a quake of a similar magnitude happen here, residents will have a better chance of surviving but will need a place to live when the shaking stops. >> move and shake and actually design to have certain permanent displacement. if that happens, obviously no one can live in those buildings or work in the buildings. so, yeah, i mean, you're going to see the exact same things here. >> niamoto frequently travels worldwide to city hit by earthquakes to provide guidance to local officials. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4, winning back the community's

>> announcer: live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. here are the headlines at 4:30. there was pushing, shoving and several arrests outside the hyatt reese enescy hotel in burlingame this afternoon, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the republican state convention where donald trump was speaking. officers were in riot gear and the protests delayed the start of trump's speech by nearly an hour. the secret service escorted trump in and out through the back of the hotel. he flew out of sfo just after 2:00 this afternoon. his next scheduled event is sunday in indiana. protesters were trying to block trump supporters from getting inside. abc 7 news reporter lyanne

melendez tweeted this video showing them holding back a supporter dressed in a suit. police eventually broke it up. laura anthony was inside the hotel for the front-runner's speech. he told supporters he doesn't care whether senator ted cruz or jeb bush ever give him an endorsement. coming up at 5, why some in the crowd were disappointed with what trump had to say. san francisco police chief greg suhr announced a plan today for all city police officers to start anti-bias training. it comes after a scandal invo e involving four officers accuse of sending text messages. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at police headquarters with the story. vic? >> reporter: more bad news, i'm afraid, for the department. chief greg suhr today released another batch and we are told this is the last batch of offensive text messages related to the scandal. now all officers will have to take a two-hour course on workplace discrimination and

harassment. the text messages released by chief greg suhr are just as offensive as the first batch given to reporters by public defender jeff adachi earlier this week. >> they are clear examples of explicit bias existing in the san francisco police officer. >> reporter: text t texts contain racial slurs and disparage african-americans and other racial and ethnic groups an gays. this time there are even photos with offensive captions, a picture of a fire, the sender says maybe it's a korean barbecue or a slave ship ablaze. officer jason lai and two other officers are imapply kated in the latest scandal who quit the force. the fourth is fighting termination. today suhr ordered sensitivity training for all 2,000-plus officers beginning next month. >> no one can say they didn't know what was or wasn't acceptable in the workplace. >> reporter: community members stood behind the chief as he made his announcement, all supporting his actions. >> we stand in unity against

the world was going to end he thought on june 3rd. so i think that's probably on the flash drive, something about the end of the world. >> police shot brizy four times after he walked out of the station. he will survive. the explosives were later determined to be chocolate bars wrapped in foil disguised to look like a bomb. a florida judge today ruled that a heavily salt water damaged iphone be sent to apple headquarters to see if it holds clues into last year's disappearance of two boys. austin sta fawn noes and perry cohen were last seen july 24th, vanishing during a boating trip. their boat was found, an iphone belonging to sta fawn noes was found. the cohen family sued the sta fawn noes family demanding it be turned over to authorities. >> happening you now in oklahoma, strong storms are producing hail, damaging winds and have spawned at least two

harris. >> reporter: it's the summer of 2004 and there's a special event taking place on board the luxury scientology cruise ship known as the free wind. it's the 42nd birthday celebration for the church's most prominent parishioner. rocking out right alongside the star, the undisputed leader of scientology the chairman of the board, david miscavige. but look in the background. that older gentleman playing the horn, that's ron miscavige, david's dad, who now much to the chagrin of the church has decided to step out and play so solo. >> what's the relationship between your son and tom cruise? >> tom cruise thinks that david is the top spiritual being on this planet. >> the top spiritual being on the planet. >> ron miscavige now 80 is now speaking out about why he decided to leave the church and write a book about his own son

called "ruthless". >> power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. that taste of power i think is what changed david. >> reporter: ron spent threely three decades working in the religious order of the church where he says he witnesses hi son's volcanic temper. >> david is backstage literally tearing me apart verbally for 55 minutes, cursing, yelling, screaming at me. >> reporter: for six years ron lived on a sprawling steintology base in hemmette, california, known as gold. >> it got worse and worse and worse. >> reporter: ron blame his son for what he calls an intensely stressful atmosphere at the base and says overtime the crushing work load, discipline and lack of sleep became unbearable. >> they work hard. they work really long hours, even longer than we do. but they enjoy it. >> reporter: the church is pushing back hard against these allegations, providing abc news with pictures of ron at leisure,

showing its age to the point where a few years ago the state considered cutting it down. the end appeared imminent. but even if the tree had to come down, it was still producing acorns and that meant hope. >> oaks don't do well from asexual reproduction so acorns were our only shot of maintaining the genetics of this tree. >> reporter: enter sam miry who manages the nursery at the nearby botanical gardens. she helped with the acorn effort, but to everyone it felt like a long shot. >> the tree was so old, most of the acorns were unlikely to be viable. >> reporter: so take a look and read this tag beneath a new sapling. >> miracle? >> a minor one, yeah. >> reporter: this weekend, the miracle sapling with the old dna moves to sonoma's mon teeny open space preserve. but there's a dwubl twist to this because it turns out that after ju dishs trimming rumors of the big tree's death may have

>> i'm kristen sze. when donald trump arrives at his speeches is usually chauffeured through crowds of protesters. not today. >> his motorcade stopped on the freeway and trump and his entourage walked from highway 101 across a grassy strip and into the back of the hotel. >> that was not the easiest entrance i've ever made. we went under a fence and through a fence. oh, boy, i felt like i was crossing the border actually. >> trump used the same route to leave the hotel and dodged protesters a second time. >> we have team coverage on mr. trump's bay area visit. >> reporter: i have to say that protesters also thought it was amusing when they heard that donald trump had to do what he did to get here. now, it started as a peaceful zmon straigs and ended with five people being arrested.

protesters chainlinked themselves in front of the hyatt reese enescy in burlingame, forcing the closure of old bay shore highway. republican supporters tried to get through, being forced to turn back. >> that's not necessarily a good thing, but it was harmless. that's no big deal. i'm on my way. >> reporter: but not every attendee agreed with their demands. this is what happened when republican supporter nick st. royale of orange county tried to cross a line full of trump protesters. >> get your hand off of me! >> reporter: eventually protesters pushed him away as st. royale demanded that he should be allowed to enter through the front of the hotel. >> if you don't like a candidate, by all means you don't have to like them. but to block people from walking on a public sidewalk is just utterly absurd. >> we're trying to block donald trump from speaking at the convention here today. we don't want to give him a platform for his hateful, racist, anti-muslim, anti-migrant, anti-black rhetoric. >>
