what they did to help rescuers find them. and, trunk show. the circus elephants who helped create the greatest show on earth, now taking a final bow. good evening. and thank you for joining us on this saturday, i'm cecilia vega. we begin with heavy rain and severe storms tonight, threatening millions of americans. more than 120 storm reports in just 24 hours. and that weather taking a deadly turn in texas, where flash flooding swept through this house, killing the great grandmother and her four great grandchildren. that state seeing the brunt of it. up to eight inches of rain falling in some spots. and take a look at this. the flood caught on camera, washing away this road. and this time lapse. that is one of five reported tornadoes that ripped across the southern plains.

abc's phillip mena leads us off from the storm zone tonight. >> reporter: tonight, flash floods bringing a deadly wall of water. nearly eight inches of rain in texas. waters rising to roof level in mere minutes. >> need ems at timber, multiple units, ems timber. >> reporter: a grandmother and her four great grandchildren, all under 9 years old, unable to escape. >> we're going to probably need possibly dive team to walk the back of this house due to the proximity to the creek. >> reporter: neighbors say they heard the screams, but couldn't reach them, because the water was too deep. >> well, i seen the children in the water crying and going on, and i seen, like, their head. but the water was so high, they went under. we couldn't -- there was nothing we could do. >> there it is! >> reporter: overnight, twisters ripping across texas and oklahoma. chris allen reaching his six kids just in time. >> luckily we wasn't in there. so, we just stayed at the school, they have a safe room up

there, and we waited until the storm passed, and this is what we come back to. >> reporter: when the storm was over, their home was gone. in lynn dale, texas, at least a dozen homes damaged. this was all that was left of the local dollar store and sports store. clothing and shoes still on the shelves. >> oh, my god! i was just over there by that water. >> reporter: the ground here is so saturated, one man capturing that road literally splitting apart. making it out of his car just in time. cecilia, it's unbelievable to think that i am standing on the wall of this sports store. families along the gulf coast are bracing for a rough night ahead, as those heavy rains push to the east. flash flood watches remain in effect tonight. so, people here, cecilia, are just hoping that they can catch a little break from these storms. >> what an absolutely incredible scene behind you, phillip, they so desperately deserve a break. thank you. we want to turn to our other top story tonight. that deadly accident on a

popular carnival ride. two texas teenagers thrown off, one of them killed. that carnival shut down at this hour. investigators now trying to piece together what went wrong. here's abc's lauren lyster. >> reporter: tonight, this church carnival in el paso, a ghost town. shut down as police investigate how a carefree ride turned deadly for one teenage girl. >> nobody even knows what to say to one another. a lot of wet eyes and a lot of hugs that are going on right now. >> reporter: youtube is full of moments like these, showing the fun times at carnivals, rising the sizzler. but last night, two girls were thrown from the seats of that ride. a 16-year-old slamming into a metal barricade and later dying at the hospital. another suffering a head injury. and a third rider escaping unharmed. that girl's father saying she survived by grasping the metal lap bar as tight as she could. >> these three girls were the only girls on the ride at the time. what hasn't been determined is if the safety bar or the seat

belt either failed or was not put on correctly. >> reporter: in texas, carnival rides must be inspected once a year. police don't yet know if this ride was in compliance. the carnival industry says americans take more than a billion rides each year. 13,000 riders suffer injuries that send them to an emergency room. tonight, we reached the owners of this traveling carnival, but they wouldn't give us a comment. cecilia? >> still so many questions. lauren, thank you. we want to turn to the race for the white house now. donald trump starting his weekend with a stern tweet, directed at those protesters who forced him to use that back door in california, calling them thugs and criminals who should be dealt with by police. trump now with an eye on winning the hoosier state, where ted cruz faces a make or break primary, just days away. abc's devin dwyer has the latest. >> reporter: the intense campaign to stop donald trump, tonight, drawing a counterpunch. trump on twitter weighing in on two days of violent protests in california, calling the activists who blocked his path

flirted with a run tonight firing off a warning to republican and democratic voters. beware of demagogues. >> those who promise you a free lunch will invariably eat you for breakfast. >> reporter: trump, cruz, hillary clinton and bernie sanders all converge on indiana tomorrow to make a final push ahead of tuesday's primary. cecilia? >> a big vote coming up. devin, thank you. we want to turn overseas now, and a state of emergency declared after protesters stormed baghdad's green zone. these images showing anti-government demonstrators taking over the parliament building, smashing car windows and snapping selfies. abc's lama hasan with the late details. >> reporter: thousands of protesters scale the walls and brazenly break through the barricades of the green zone. the scene unfolding right next to the u.s. embassy. storming the country's parliament and ransacking the building. shooting videos as they make their way in. others sitting at desks where just moments earlier, lawmakers had been meeting.

flying the iraqi flag high and chanting against the government. the protesters calling on the prime minister to end corruption and eliminate the political system put in place since the u.s.-led invasion in 2003. tonight, as a state of emergency remains, those protesters have left the parliament building. but they haven't gone very far. camping outside until their the demands are met. cecilia? >> okay, lama, thank you. we turn now to a mother and daughter lost in the wilderness, four days. tonight, they are safe. the north carolina pair took a wrong turn on a hike in new zealand, forced to ration food, but they did manage to find a creative way to help themselves. here's abc's mary bruce. >> reporter: this is the urgent plea for help leading to an astonishing rescue. north carolina native carolyn lloyd, visiting her daughter, rachel, as she studies abroad in new zealand. the pair head off tuesday for a hike into this dense forest. but things quickly take a dangerous turn. they became disoriented, with no

way out of the rugged wilderness. they rationed their resources and huddled together for warmth, spelling out "help" with rocks and sticks. that sign spotted today by rescuers flying overhead. >> there were two different signs and also a big arrow in the river bed pointing to their location. they had gone to a lot of effort to make sure that their attention would be grabbed. >> reporter: it's the latest in a string of amazing survival stories. these men stranded on a remote pacific island using palm leaves to spell out "help." this mother and daughter, recovering in a new zealand hospital tonight. >> they are understandably a little bit worse for wear now, just dehydrated and exhausted. >> reporter: thankful help came just in time. mary bruce, abc news, washington. and back home now to a scandal rocking san francisco's police department. racist and homophobic text messages sent by officers and released to the public have residents outraged and wondering

how this could happen again. abc's aditi roy in san francisco tonight. >> reporter: outrage tonight in san francisco. protesters demonstrating in front of the city's police headquarters after the release of racist and homophobic text messages, allegedly involving a former lieutenant and two former officers. the messages riddled with slurs against minorities, transgender and gay people, using the "n" word. the police chief says he's ordered all officers to finish an anti-harassment class within the next month. >> no one can say that they didn't know what was or wasn't acceptable in the workplace. >> reporter: it's the second scandal involving bigoted texts to rock the sfpd. last year, texts allegedly exchanged among 14 officers were made public through court documents. some of those officers still on the force after an attempt to fire them was rejected by a

judge. in the latest incident, two of the accused officers resigned, and the lieutenant retired. some of the protesters behind me are on their tenth day of a hunger strike, calling on the police chief to resign. cecilia? >> aditi, thank you. next, to new questions surrounding the mystery of prince's death, and now the future of his fortune. another potential heir to that massive estate revealed, as investigators focus on the possibility of an overdose and a midair health scare just before the music legend's death. abc's eva pilgrim reports in from paisley park. >> reporter: new information tonight about who stands to inherit prince's estimated $300 million estate. >> thank you for loving him, y'all. >> reporter: prince's sister tyka seen here greeting fans, filed court documents acknowledging that the superstar has heirs whose identities and addresses need to be determined. in addition to prince's six siblings, sources say there is now a seventh potential heir, a

teenage grandniece. she is the granddaughter of another one of prince's half brothers, who died years ago. this, as we are seeing new images of prince's health scare just days before he died. >> cfr will be waiting. they want you to go to the west center north ramp. >> reporter: multiple emergency vehicles meeting prince's plane on the tarmac when it made that emergency landing in moline, illinois. now, law enforcement reportedly investigating if a doctor was on the plane, and whether a doctor prescribed drugs for the star in recent weeks. abc news learning authorities have executed a search warrant at his local walgreens. sources telling abc news that prescription medication was found on prince and in his home after he died. but no official word yet on the cause. toxicology results still weeks away. some of prince's siblings are expected in court monday, as they move forward, settling his estate. if it turns out that the superstar had a child, that child would inherit the entire estate. cecilia? >> eva, thank you. now, to the end of an era

for the greatest show on earth. some famous circus heavyweights are retiring, but not before their final big top extravaganza. abc's marci gonzalez now on the next chapter for these beloved circus elephants. >> reporter: tonight, these elephants in the ringling brothers and barnum & bailey circus are preparing to take their final bow. >> and here come the elephants. >> reporter: for more than a century, they've been the giant stars of the greatest show on earth. >> they're the greatest colleagues to have. >> reporter: but after decades of backlash from animal rights groups, all 11 elephants still on tour will give their last performances tomorrow. >> we're just so happy these majestic elephants will no longer be subjected to this treatment. >> reporter: they'll retire to a 200-acre conservation center in florida run by the circus. >> these are members of our family. so, it's going to be a thrill to have the elephants come back to the center and just continue to be elephants. that's what they're best at.

her dad's mercedes, trying to capture her alleged 100-mile-per-hour speed for a snapchat post, and it ended in a devastating crash. ron claiborne now with questions about that accident and snapchat's alleged role. >> reporter: tonight, snapchat facing a lawsuit by the driver of this car, struck by a young woman allegedly using the speed tracking feature while going more than 100 miles an hour. >> and i'm like, well, what are you doing? slow down. >> reporter: one passenger recounting the horrifying scene. >> and i just remember screaming "there's a car." >> reporter: the driver of the car that was hit suffering permanent brain damage, according to his lawyer. his lawsuit claims the snapchat speedometer filter encouraged 18-year-old crystal mcgee to drive at a high speed. abc station wsb reporting that two of the three passengers in mcgee's car say she was on the app just before the crash. >> she said, well, i'm just going to hit 100 and then i'm going to slow down. >> reporter: but a third passenger reportedly claiming
