performing elephants. the circus now elephants now join the other retired pachyderms on ringling's preserve in florida. those are some of our top stories on this monday, may 2nd. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good monday morning, everybody. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. we start things off some rough weather in some parts of the country. >> it seems like we've been saying that quite a bit. in the last couple of weeks. it's been a rough spring. the extreme weather in the heart of the country, central indiana seeing strong storms overnight with two possible tornados touching down. >> there was also heavy rain, strong winds and lots of hail. the good news is no major damage reported so far. most of those who lost power should have it back by now. >> at least five people have drowned in flash flooding along the gulf coast. a woman and her four great grand children swept away as they tried to get to safety

throughout the region, many highways are closed and schools are canceling classes for today. some areas received as much as 10 inches rain in 24 hours and more thunderstorms overnight mean more flooding very likely. >> storms caused severe damage throughout the atlanta area. >> many trees were uprooted including one that damaged three homes, thousands lost power and the loss of electricity impacted water service. residents are advised to boil their water. >> let's get the complete forecast now from accuweather's paul williams. good morning, paul. >> good morning to you, diane, kendis. it's stormy in the south and going to be wet in the northeast. everybody's going to have their share of this muggy wet damp kind of pie. but heavy showers in the deep south. for example, right along the gulf coast, warm moisture coming off the gulf coast feeding into the frenzy of scattered showers and thunderstorms. heavy showers cause more problems with flooding unfortunately, and i'm sorry, but tomorrow rain for the folks in houston, coastal region of louisiana, new orleans, mississippi going into alabama

and the heavy rain will reach all the way into the carolinas. a few storms even into portions of florida. but not just there, then that rain stretches all the way up towards the northeast. this low pressure system brings more rain in through the northeast and the mid-atlantic with spotty showers from new york all the way down to the carolinas. kendis. diane? >> paul, thank you. may day protests in seattle turned violent in some cases. the anti-capitalist demonstrators through rocks, bricks even molotov cocktails at police. five officers were injured. at least nine people were arrested. there were other may day demonstrations in portland, san francisco and l.a. even a peaceful one in seattle. but this particular one was the only one that turned violent. >> to the campaign trail winding through indiana before tomorrow's critical primary. donald trump and hillary clinton are itching for a one-on-one fight against each other but their rivals are saying not so fast. >> donald trump is hoping that the indiana primary will put his last two rivals down for the count.

>> i knocked out 17 people. the two last ones are hanging by their fingertips. they're choking. don't let me fall. don't let me fall. >> trump is riding a winning streak into the hoosier state where one poll shows him with a 15-point lead over cruz with john kasich trailing far behind. >> if we win indiana, most people think they quit the race and then we can focus on crooked hillary, please. let's focus on hillary. >> trailing trump by more than 400 delegates, ted cruz vows to take his fight to the republican convention but indiana could be his last best hope to derail trump. >> you're on the 30 yard line, it's not a touch down. donald right now is on the 30 yard line and wants everyone to say the game is over. >> hillary clinton also campaigning in indiana greeting voters at a pancake house with a commanding lead over bernie sanders, she's now taking the fight to the republican front runner. >> we cannot let barack obama's legacy fall into donald trump's hands.

>> reporter: like cruz, sanders is promising to battle on after the primary season. while admitting it's a -- >> tough road to climb. >> reporter: even so, he says it ain't over till it's over. >> in other words, the convention will be a contested contest. >> voters in indiana will have their say about that tuesday. overseas secretary of state john kerry holds high level meetings today in ja sflee, switzerland in an effort to get stalled syrian peace talks moving again. he arrived there last night. he spoke at length with a top russian official to that end on friday to stop the bloodshed where 250 civilians have been killed in recent days. cia director john brennan is looking to clarify information from a secret an chapter of the 9/11 congressional inquiry. he says the 9/11 commission made a very clear judgment that there

was no evidence of the saudi government financially backing al qaeda. the obama administration, however, may soon release the documents and brennan is concerned that people might seize on uncorroborated information about possible saudi links to the attackers. it's been five years since american operatives killed osama bin laden. and the cia relived the anniversary with live tweets. the agency posted step by step updates of the raid as if it were happening at that moment. complete with photos of president obama and his inner circle in the situation room. they reveal exactly when u.s. helicopters departed for pakistan to the moment bin laden was confirmed dead on the third floor of his compound. more than 40 public schools in detroit will be closed today. the move comes after the teachers union called for a sick-out. the school system's emergency manager is warning that this district won't be able to pay its employees after june 30th. he also says today's sick-out will make it more difficult to convince the legislature to approve a rescue plan.

efforts to find a missing florida mom are intensifying today with the arrival of sonar equipment to search a pond. volunteers joined forces over the weekend trying to look for tricia todd. aditi roy has the latest. >> reporter: a community desperate to find a missing mother in florida. dozens of volunteers on the ground, and a police helicopter in the air. 30-year-old tricia todd was last seen wednesday morning. now authorities calling her >> we know she's out there somewhere. and we just want our girl back. >> i don't know. >> reporter: todd an air force veteran and hospice nurse was supposed to pick up her 2-year-old daughter from her ex-husband's house wednesday, but she never showed up. her ex-husband, the last person to see her, is now scheduled to be re-interviewed by police. authorities telling abc news he's not a suspect. >> he has been completely cooperative. he's willing to take a polygraph test. >> reporter: investigators say they found her car at a

neighbor's house wednesday night with the keys in the ignition and her purse inside. her phone and wallet missing. >> for her to not show up to pick her daughter is incredibly unusual. >> reporter: now a vigil planned as the community cling to hope. aditi roy, abc news, san francisco. commuters in the d.c. area could face some delays this morning following a train derailment. several cars of a csx freight train went off the tracks in northeast d.c. a company spokeswoman says one of the trains leaked sodium high oxide used to produce so and soap and detergent. two important energy exploration companies have called off their merger. the announcement was made by the justice department which had sued halliburton and baker hughes to stop the merger. government claimed the combination would eliminate significant competition in more than two dozen markets. the justice department says it would have raised prices, decreased output and lessened innovation.

levels. let's look at the radar right now. you can see the slow-moving storm system over the western gulf coast with scattered thunderstorms possible across the southeast. there are also storms over the tennessee and ohio valleys. over in washington, d.c., commuters could face delays this morning following a train derailment. several cars of a csx freight train went off the tracks in northeast d.c. a company spokeswoman says one of the derailed trains leaked sodium hydroxide used to produce various household products like soap and detergents. >> the train has split. it looks like the train has come apart. and i'm looking at one train that's leaking a chemical. >> both amtrak and d.c. metro are expected to be affected by that derailment this morning. it was a nascar demolition derby at talladega on sunday. 35 race cars were involved in accidents of some kind. here are some of them. a couple of smaller crashes in the early going including one in which danica patrick was hustled

out of her burning car. look at that scene there. but the big ones came in the final laps. this one involved 21 cars followed by another one with 12 cars as brad keselowski crossed the finish line to win. there was another one in the back of the pack. >> 21 cars. makes me nervous. i don't like it. >> just that one accident. >> especially the flames, that was crazy. >> it gives you a sense of how strong the cars are nowadays. >> that they can be completely safe. you fear for the worst when you see those things. the golden state warriors were probably fearing for the worse when they lost steph curry, but they proved they can win even without him. >> that's because of this young man. klay thompson picked up the slack, scoring 37 points against portland as the warriors beat the trail blazers, 118-106. giving golden state the first game in the nba western conference finals. >> nothing but net. >> absolutely. >> thompson sank seven three-pointers but all the

cannot win with just pledged delegates and sanders is calling on her super delegates to support him instead. on the campaign trail, clinton remains focussed on trump. >> we cannot let barack obama's legacy fall into donald trump's hands. >> reporter: clinton has 91% of the delegates she needs to clinch the nomination. sanders is upset she's winning superdelegates in states where he actually won the primary. on the republican side, donald trump is mocking his rivals who are also hoping for a contested convention, saying they're hanging on by their fingertips. indiana could be make or break for ted cruz who is trailing trump in the latest poll by 15 points in the hoosier state. trump is calling on his party to unite behind his candidacy but predicting a victory whether they cooperate or not. >> i don't think it matters but it would be nice to have the

republican party come together. >> cruz is not ready to surrender to the delegate math. instead he's pointing out two endorsements one from indiana governor mike pence and another from former california governor pete wilson. over night, may day demonstrations in seattle turned violent. police used pepper spray to disperse anti-capitalist protesters who threw molotov cocktails, bricks, rocks. five officers were injured, nine people arrested. demonstrations in portland, los angeles, san francisco and oakland were mostly peaceful. may day is held worldwide on the 1st of the month in support of workers' rights. the ntsb is investigating a las vegas area plane crash which killed an instructor, pilot and a student passenger. the aircraft went down saturday in a dry lake bed in a rural area of clark county. plane belonged to a company called vegas extreme adventures known as sky combat ace offering customers a chance what it's like to be a fighter pilot.

a long legal journey is getting under way for prince's family, less than two weeks after his sudden death. they're heading to court in minnesota today as they try to sort out what will happen to his $300 million estate. it will likely be divided among his sister and five half siblings. but several people have already come forward claiming to be his secret children. meanwhile, prince's personal chef says in the past month or two, the singer frequently had a sore throat or upset stomach and wanted meals easier to digest. well, puerto rico has a huge bill due today that it can't pay. territory will default on a $422 million bond payment. weekend negotiations on deferring the payment were unsuccessful. in a speech sunday, the governor said providing essential services to residents was more important. congress has so far been unable to pass a debt restructuring bill for that island. look at this, this is a carnival ship making history. the first american cruise line

to leave an american port bound for cuba in 50 years. the 600 plus passengers are expected to arrive in havana this morning and will return to the port of miami in seven days. the cruise comes after cuba loosened its policy banning cuban born people from arriving to that country by sea. it looks like it will be an active wild fire season for some parts of the country. the national interagency fire center says this year, the southwest, california, alaska, and hawaii are at particularly high risk. however, the wildfire threat is normal or below normal for a lot of texas, the south and the southern midwest. last year we saw a record number of square miles burnt. president obama is reviewing design proposals for his future presidential library. the white house says the first lady joined him at sunday's meeting in washington with staff of the barack obama foundation. there are seven architectural firms chosen as finalists. the foundation plans to build a
