"the new york post" trump's hometown paper, as you see the numbers from last night sharing this cover, can you believe it? and calling him the nominee. an earlier headline read "hoosier daddy." >> and on the democratic side bernie sanders takes indiana,

close win over hillary clinton. he says the race is not over, but her delegate lead all but insurmountable now. >> abc's tom llamas is in indianapolis starting us off with the republicans and the latest on this big turning point in the race for president. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning. it was one of the most bizarre days in american politics and started with a fight over the assassination of jfk and it ended with the chair of the rnc crowning a former reality star and billionaire the new leader of the republican party. overnight, the likely last obstacle standing between donald trump and the republican nomination, crumbled. >> tonight, i'm sorry to say -- >> all: no. >> -- it appears that path has been foreclosed. >> reporter: senator ted cruz with tears in his eyes dropping out of the race for president after a double-digit loss in indiana. >> we gave it everything we've got.

but the voters chose another path. >> reporter: following that, the rnc chairman declaring the inevitable tweeting "donald trump will be presumptive gop nominee. we all need to unite and focus on defeating hillary clinton." >> it's been some unbelievable day and evening and year. >> reporter: a toned down trump gracious in this victory but it was a wild day. before the votes were even counted, cruz describing trump as a morally corrupt madman. >> this man is a pathological liar. he doesn't know the difference between truth and lies. >> reporter: then cruz going after trump's past sex life. >> he is a serial philanderer and he boasts about it. >> reporter: the texas senator unleashing on his one-time friend after trump cited a "national enquirer" story linking cruz's father to lee harvey oswald. >> what was he doing with lee harvey oswald shortly before the death? before the shooting?

it's horrible. >> donald trump alleges that my dad was involved in assassinating jfk. now, let's be clear. this is nuts. >> reporter: but by the end of the night, a change of heart. >> just so you understand ted cruz, i don't know if he likes me or he doesn't like me but he is one hell of a competitor. he is a tough, smart guy. >> reporter: and now trump, the battle-tested candidate ready for the next fight. >> we're not going to lose. we're going to start winning again and we're going to win big, believe me. >> reporter: trump not taking a break now that he's on top already on twitter sending out this tweet "i would rather run against crooked hillary clinton than bernie sanders and that will happen because the books are cooked against bernie." now, clinton better get used to having a twitter war because donald trump used it so effective to pick apart his republican opponents. george. >> thanks, tom.

we are joined by donald trump. mr. trump, thank you for joining us this morning. congratulations on that victory. you are now the leader of the republican party. how would you sum up what trump's republican party stands for and what specific steps are you going to take to unify the party behind you. >> well, i think more than anything else we'll have great heart. we'll take care of people and we have to -- we have people that are in desperate need of help but we'll take care of our economy and jobs and not make horrible trade deals like we've been witnessing over the years, over many years, george. people haven't had wage increase, some people, in 18 years to 20 years effective wage increases and we'll get that all turned around. >> let's talk about unifying the party behind you. you had kind words yesterday for ted cruz but do you owe his father an apology saying he was with lee harvey oswald before jfk's assassination. >> what i was referring to was a picture reported and in a magazine and i think they didn't deny it. i don't think anybody denied it. i don't know what it was exactly

but it was a major story and a major publication and it was picked up by many other -- >> it was "the national enquirer". and even the expert who cited it wasn't sure it was mr. cruz. >> it gave you o.j. simpson and gave you many, many things. you can't knock "the national enquirer." it's brought many things to light not all pleasant, the fact it was a cover story on "the national enquirer" picked up by many other people and magazines and periodicals and newspapers and all i did was refer to it. >> no apology? >> i'm just referring to an article that appeared. it has nothing to do with me and the father was very active in the campaign and said nasty things about me in the morning and it was reported and it wasn't nice what he said about me and i just referred him to articles that were in various periodicals. >> let's talk about other steps you might take to unify the party including your choice for vice president.

will your vice presidential choice definitely be a republican. >> yes, that's true. >> will it be an elected official. >> most likely and probably a person with political experience because i mean while i've been in the world of politics all my life, the business, i will handle so well will bring our jobs back and bring our economy back but i do want people to -- i would like to have somebody that could truly be good with respect to dealing with the senate, dealing with congress, getting legislation passed. working toward something where we're not signing executive orders every three days like president obama does. >> sounds like you have a name in mind. >> not a name in mind but i do like the political sphere. you have the military sphere, you have the political sphere and business. well, the business i handle. i think i'm going to be very, very good on the military to be honest with you. i think that will be the hidden strength and i think probably i would like to go with somebody with great political experience.

>> meantime, you're looking at hillary clinton as your most likely opponent in november. new poll out from cnn shows she's leading you 54% to 41%. you're holding your own with men but she's crushing you with women and minorities. how do you turn that around? >> well, rasmussen just came out with a poll highly respected and i'm leading her by two points, 41% to 39% so you'll have polls all over but rasmussen and other one came out where we're tied and i haven't started yet. george, there were 17 people that i had to win against and now it's going to be hillary, so we'll see what happens. i mean, it's going to be i think a very interesting race. >> she says she'll take aim at your qualifications to be commander in chief. what's your target in her? >> she has poor judgment and bernie sanders said it. took it right out of his playbook. he said she has poor judgment. he also said she's not qualified.

that's about a lot -- that's going a long way but more importantly she's got poor judgment. if you look at the e-mail scandals and all of the bad decisions she's made whether it's libya, whether it's benghazi, whether it's so many other things, you look back at what's happened during the administration. >> finally, quick question about how you'll finance the campaign. you haven't had to spend too much money so far. so what about going forward? are you going to be raising money with the republican party or self-financing or public financing. >> so far i've spent my own money. i spent i think it's listed as $44 million and taken small contributions. we will probably take small contributions. we'll take the limits, i don't want big contributions now. people can contribute to the party. there will be a unification, no question about it. but i'm really looking at small contribution, not the big ones. i don't want to have anybody have any influence over me, that i can tell you. >> will you be writing big checks. >> yes, making major

contributions to the party. >> mr. trump, thanks for joining us. >> thank you very much. >> now to the democratic candidates. bernie sanders notching another win in indiana last night saying that the race with hillary clinton is not over. abc's cecilia vega has the latest. joins us from columbus, ohio. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. this win gives bernie sanders the psychological boost he needs to keep going but it was not enough to cut into hillary clinton's lead and this morning her sights are set on november. ahead of that big indiana win, bernie sanders' wife jane joining him on stage to deliver the early results. >> we're going to win. >> reporter: he's not just vowing to fight the fight but coming out swinging. >> secretary clinton thinks that this campaign is over. i've got some bad news for her. >> reporter: sanders says he's going all the way and there's no stopping him.

>> i think we can pull off one of the great political upsets in the history of the united states. >> reporter: but even with that hoosier state victory, the math is a different story. it will still be impossible for sanders to win enough pledge delegates to clinch the nomination. he's now planning for a contested convention. >> i do not deny it for one second that we have an uphill battle in front of us. >> reporter: hillary clinton thinks she has a path to victory too by taking on donald trump. >> we cannot allow ourselves to be divided against one another. to be set against one another. to have scapegoating and shaming and blaming and insulting. >> reporter: she took to twitter overnight calling him the presumptive gop nominee. telling her supporters, chip in now if you agree we can't let him become president. and not just that her campaign chairman overnight sent out a statement calling donald trump,

quote, simply too big a risk. this primary fight still under way but this is very much a sign of the general election fight to come, robin. >> it really is. cecilia, abc's jon karl is going to joins us now and talk about that. primary races look close to being wrapped up. both now looking toward the general election. >> absolutely. if you look on the republican side it looks like a clean sweep for donald trump. there are still 6 delegates to be allocated but so far he has 51. the others are simply cked out. that means he is closing in on the delegates he needs to clinch well on the way to doing it before the convention on the democratic side. hillary clinton got beaten by bernie sanders but, look, he only got six more delegates than she did so she is getting very close to clinching there. it looks, the bottom line, like we are headed toward a trump/clinton general election. >> how does that matchup look? >> because of demographic changes in the country we are -- the democrats begin with a

significant advantage here. look at this map. this was put together by my friend at "the washington post." the states in dark blue voted democrat all of the last six presidential elections. if hillary clinton hangs on to those all she needs to do is win the state of florida. and she becomes president. trump has to put in place states like his home state of new york, pennsylvania and michigan, but there's no question that hillary clinton goes into this as the clear front-runner. >> all right, jon, thank you. let's bring in matthew dowd for more. you're in l.a. you were one of the first to call the power of the trump candidacy back last summer. you just saw that map that jon karl showed right now. donald trump begins this general election as an underdog in the electoral map in the polling so can lightning strike twice? >> well, that's the interesting thing. you know, we don't know and i think the fascinating thing about donald trump, george, is you and i have talked about.

almost as if this is out of greek mythology, the development of donald trump where the titans of the gop establishment gave birth to donald trump through their actions and inactions and now the son of a titan has slain his father like zeus and rules over mt. olympus now headed to an epic battle against hillary clinton so he starts off at a series disadvantage but i don't think we can underestimate donald trump's ability in this sphere. >> well, matthew dowd is forcing me to pick up on his analogy, jon. the other gods on mt. olympus are not there with him yet. >> i don't know if cleveland is mt. olympus but i tell you this, george, many of the top republican leaders over the year, governors, former governors including former presidential nominees for the republicans like mitt romney will not be supporting donald trump. they probably will not even be going to the convention in cleveland. donald trump is just turned the republican party upside down. >> the question, matthew dowd, still out there a third party candidate.

>> i think it's still a possibility but the republicans that are so anti-trump they don't want to support him and still don't want to support hillary clinton have to figure it out. the deadlines for doing that are passing very quickly so they'd have to decide now in the next week or ten days. i think it's still a possibility but it's dwindling. >> matt dowd, jon karl, thanks very much. amy has the other top stories starting with an entire city evacuated. >> more than 80,000 being urged to flee a city in canada because of a massive wildfire that's threatening to engulf entire neighborhoods. look at those pictures, ft. mcmurray in alberta province, only one road out of that city. the warm weather and dry winds fanning those flames. so far no serious injuries reported. flags are flying at half-staff to honor navy s.e.a.l. charlie keating iv. a high school track star in phoenix. the grand son of charles keating.

there is new concern about exploding air bags blamed for 11 deaths and regulators are expected to announce the takata air bag recall is more than doubling to include another 35 millionaire bags. the inflater can cause them to burst open spraying metal into the car. cars and climates with high humidity appear to be most at risk. and finally you know what, forget going on a whale watch in alaska. all you have to do is stand on the dock. yeah, imagine walking out to your dock and seeing this. boom. a humpback whale breaching the water while snacking a few feet from the marina. this guy got really close but humpback whales are considered placid and friendly. >> i'll take your word from it from a distance. thank you, amy. now to a scary series of incidents unfolding at supermarkets in michigan. a man suspected of spraying chemical toxins on food is now arrested by the fbi.

>> reporter: pierre thomas with the latest. >> reporter: today the fbi racing to see if anyone got seriously ill from a low scale chemical attack to contaminate food, the fbi believes the man in this photograph went to at least three grocery stores in ann arbor, michigan, whole foods, meijer and plum market spraying produce with hand cleaner, water and tomcat mice poison, its key ingredient, bromethalin is one that prevents the blood from clotting and irritates the skin. >> it's very creepy. >> i would like to ring his neck just to see who it is. >> reporter: those stores targeted in the last two weeks and according to the fbi, the suspect visited several other grocery stores in the ann arbor area in the last few months and they're determining if any other stores were victimized. >> he's been in a couple of other grocery store, he admitted so we have notified them.

♪ purple rain purple rain >> reporter: the minneapolis star tribune reporting dr. howard kornfeld rushed his son andrew on a red-eye from san francisco to minneolis to treat the star the night before his death. speaking to william mauzy, the paper reports arrived at 9:30 a.m. but his entourage could not find him. prince's body found in an elevator a few minutes later. he said kornfeld called 911 and telling emergency services we're in minneapolis, minnesota, and we are at the home of prince. the people are just distraught. prince pronounced dead at 10:09 and "the star tribune" said he hoped prince would go to california for long-term care under the doctor's supervision. allegations of drug problems flying this morning as authorities released this log of more than 45 911 calls about prince's paisley park complex.

one from germany in 2011, a woman calling police concerned about prince's cocaine habits saying that he advised her that he cannot control his habit. since the woman waited a year after the comments to contact authorities and she did not indicate that the singer was in immediate danger, police didn't investigate. sources say authorities are looking at the star's pain medication and whether he died of a drug overdose. this morning prince's friends standing up for the music icon. his former employees saying these allegations of drug use don't ring true. >> it's completely exhausting. it wasn't the person we knew. >> for the amount of time we were there we would have seen something. >> reporter: this couple made sure prince was well fed. the two says he rarely had a sip of wine. >> his version of partying is different from others. he wasn't like a typical rock star. >> he wasn't drinking. >> no. ♪ >> we lost a friend to -- like we lost a person and our friend is not there anymore.

>> reporter: now, we reached out to the cornfelds as well as the lawyer saying he is representing the doctor and still waiting on a response. no word on an official cause of death. george and robin. now to the latest in that search for a missing florida mom gone for more than a week now. surveillance images show her at a grocery store smiling just before she vanished and amy has new details in the investigation. >> this is such a strange one. tricia todd an air force veteran mother of a 2-year-old little girl and police say she disappeared without a trace. they are grasping for leads to try and track her down. this morning authorities pleading for the public's help to find tricia todd, missing florida mother. >> we continue to ask for the public support. >> reporter: police releasing this image believed to be the last time the air force veteran was seen in public before vanishing. more than one week ago. todd pictured smiling at her local grocery store. >> she was smiling and engaged

so we don't have anybody that we know of that wished her harm. >> reporter: police findin todd's car parked near her home a mile away from the store. the keys still in the ignition. her purse inside. but her phone and wallet missing. the 30-year-old nurse was supposed to pick up her daughter from her ex-husband the day after she disappeared but never showed and didn't show up for work either. >> she had always bent over backwards for the sake of her little girl. >> reporter: authorities say her ex steven williams is not a suspect and voluntarily took a polygraph test. >> no physical evidence or witness testimony links mr. williams with tricia todd's disappearance. >> reporter: they're now scouring credit card bills phone and bank records hoping for clues or signs of activity. >> there is no evidence that a crime occurred. this is a strong circumstantial case for an abduction except that some of the elements of what you would see in an abduction are missing. >> they are focusing on nearby

back now with a big headline about zika from the cdc. health officials warning it's very likely the virus will spread from mosquitoes to humans here in the u.s. sparking new concerns as connecticut sees its first confirmed case of a pregnant woman with zika. abc's gio benitez has the latest. >> reporter: this morning fears swelling around the zika virus and the mosquitoes that spread it.

>> it is a very difficult mosquito to control and eliminate. >> reporter: u.s. officials now saying it is, quote, very likely that zika would spread from mosquitoes to humans in america. summer right around the corner, what's the best thing you and your family can do to combat the disease right here at home? last spring "consumer reports" tested 15 insect repellents finding the most effective ones against the most specific mosquitoes known for spreading the virus. they were sawyer picaridin. natrapel 8 hour and off! deepwoods and we met up with the bug guy from the university of maryland for his tips to battle the bugs. >> mosquito repellent clothing is a very good way to prevent mosquito bites. in addition, it's also been proven to actually reduce the incidence of mosquito-borne diseases. >> what else can you do?

we all know the big story of the morning, donald trump turing his attention now to the genenel election now that ted cruz has dropped out of the race for president. trump is promising to unify the party, and he'll need to because one national poll out today shows trump trailing hillary clinton by 13 points. abc's tom llamas has all the latest. tom, good morning. >> reporter: amy, this morning there is a new leader in the republican party, and his name is donald trump. overnight, the chair of the rnc calling trump the presumptive nominee after senator ted cruz dropped out. now cruz told his supporters yesterday in a very emotional speech that he was dropping out of the race because there was no clear path to victory. cruz actually had tears in his eyes. his family members and supporters were also crying, as well. now, this morning donald trump spoke with george. here's what he had to say. >> you are now the leader of the republican party. how would you sum up what trump's republican party stands for? >> we're going to take care of our economy and take care of jobs and we're not going to make horrible trade deals like we've been witnessing over the years,

many years. >> reporter: during that interview george asked if he had a vice presidential running mate in mind. here's what donald trump had to say. >> and it will be probably a person with political experience because i would like to have somebody that could truly be good with respect to dealing with the senate, dealing with congress, getting legislation passed. >> now, donald trump sets his sites on hillary clinton and the general election, which he says he's going to win, quote, big league and already on twitter this morning calling clinton, "crooked hill." amy. >> all right, tom. bernie sanders won indiana by four points, but he and hillary clinton will split those delegates, so the victory does very little to slow clinton's march to the nomination. sanders insisting the race is not over. president obama is visiting flint, michigan, today, promising change as that city struggles to recover from its lead tainted water supply. he is meeting with 8-year-old mari copeny, who invited him to visit. michigan's governor was calling on the president to drink the

water to show it is now safe. well, a developing story north of the border, look at these images. more than 80,000 canadians ordered to evacuate their homes as a fast-moving wildfire is threatening ft. mcmurray and many homes damaged or destroyed and helicopters dispatched to the front lines. news for parents this morning, a new survey finds more than half of teenagers, 59% describe themselves as being addicted to their cell phones. i feel like that's a pretty low number. it's probably higher than that. they say 80% check it every hour and 9 hours are spent every day checking media. which experts say is affecting their relationships and skook work and i concur. going online may help ward off depression. researchers say self-help exercises online have proven beneficial in teaching behavioral and problem solving skills like how to brainstorm solutions or make time more enjoyable. one online program helped lower

that medical alert about antibiotics. a shocking new study revealing around 47 million unnecessary prescriptions are given out each year, and all that overprescribing could do more harm than good. dr. besser is back with that. i say shocking. is it really shocking? i think we've known this for some time. but what are the results of the study? >> yeah, we've known it, but i still find it shocking. the researchers looked at the antibiotic prescribing in 2010/2011 and found that 154 million visits, there was an antibiotic prescription, but 30% of those prescriptions were for conditions where antibiotics don't work or only work sometimes. and the main ones were sinus infections, ear infections, throat infections and bronchitis where antibiotics sometimes work but a lot of times aren't the way to go. >> so what is the major concern here? >> the big concern, we're seeing this big rise in antibiotic resistant infections, so when you take an antibiotic when it's not giving you any benefit, you risk that the next time you take that antibiotic, it's not

going to work for you. plus, you're at risk for the side effects, rashes and diarrhea, and for women yeast infections without any hope of benefit from that. >> what can be done, rich, to change this alarming and disturbing trend? >> you know, i hope doctors listen to this and hear this and say, okay, i'm going to do better. but there's something we can all do, and when you go to the doctor or when people bring their children to the doctor, instead of asking for an antibiotic, say, what can i do to feel better faster? because there's studies that show if you ask for an antibiotic, a doctor is more likely to give it to you even if it's not indicated. believe me, doctors will prescribe one if it's indicated but they feel they want to you be happy so they'll prescribe it. sometimes where it's not indicated. >> i'll keep that in mind. i've been fighting this cold and i'm seeing my doctor today. >> see what happens. yeah. ask whether she feels pressure to prescribe when they say i really want that antibiotic. you're going to be busy. you have already been on twitter

think it's great for people to see the camaraderie, the brother of the u.s. missile. i think there's something that when you have a common understanding and experience and things like that, you appreciate each other. >> you're, of course, fighting on team cap. >> team cap all day, all day. >> why are you siding with "captain america" and what is it like fighting against your friends from team ironman? >> you still working out? what are you benching, me? you look great. >> it's this medium. i look better in small clothing. >> my jacket is too big. i want to be like that. no, it's funny because the great thing that marvel does, you can trace a character's background through all the movies, so if you look at "captain america: winter soldier" i was an airman in that and because hydra infiltrate d s.h.i.e.l.d. and i sided with civil liberties because we don't know what their hidden agenda it. >> of course, your character falcon, he got a bit of --

meals and it really took off. what do you think it was? >> yeah, i just had an idea for ideas because it's sort of about nutrition and posted this, and never in a million years did i think i would have a book deal and be on "gma," and it's crazy. >> do you think it's because you've broken it down and simplified it? >> it's about speed and made people understand you don't have to starve yourself. well, everyone is on these low calorie diets so i give people more food and carbohydrates and fats at the right time. what to eat and when and you said about the weight on the scale, i call it a sad step. people shouldn't obsess but progress pictures. >> i was sharing my personal story. >> you stand -- i'm up ten pounds, depressing, get it out of your life. >> let's start with some of your recipes, very, very easy, again, all 15 minutes. this you can do for breakfast. tell us about this.

>> this is called mint and mango smoothie. >> may i? >> have a little. >> not high in sugar and you have energy, high and low. this has got almond milk, almond butter. lots of healthy fat. >> a little fruit and mango and the rest of it is in the book. another recipe again that looks delicious but also tastes really good. i tried this before. tell us about it. >> so this is one of those really popular ones, everybody goes crazy for it, turkey meatballs with feta cheese. high in protein and saturated fat is -- >> not the devil. that is key to know. >> in moderation, yes, low fat and low calories old school, get rid of them. >> a little sneak peek. we have social media questions but avocado with an egg inside. to die for. but really quickly, let's talk about social media. you've got a lot of online fans and monica tweets, of all the dishes you post online, do any stand out as the biggest response? >> turkey meatballs is a winner, trust me.
