>> announcer: live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. there was some exposures. we had 17 people who were complaining of inhalation. >> a hazmat scare at a south bay clinic. seven people taken to the hospital after being exposed to a dental chemical. good afternoon, everybody. i'm larry biel. >> i'm ama daetz. it happened just before 10:00 at the indian health center in san jose. chris nguyen joins us live with the latest. chris? >> reporter: and this section of meridian avenue is back open after being closed for several hours earlier today. as precaution, officials here say they have canceled all appointments for the rest of the day. tense moments outside the indian health center as patients and

employees were wheeled into ambulances this afternoon. >> it could happen to anybody. it's so close. >> reporter: a total of 17 people with were exposed to a chemical called creigh yoe sol, a mild corrosive used as a sealant for children's fillings. of the 17, 5 adults and 2 children were transported to the hospital. >> we treated it as a hazmat exposure. we had a hazardous incident team. >> reporter: officials say employees noticed a strange odor coming from a cap being worn by a dentist. >> the dentist could smell it, others could smell it. >> reporter: upon investigation, employees discovered that a one-ounce bottle of the chemical had somehow been knocked off onto a set of caps kept inside the same cabinet. staff members called 911 and executed the center's evacuation plan. patients and employees complained of issues with breathing as well as irritated skin.

but late this afternoon, the san jose fire department confirmed that none of the injuries were life threatening. >> this large incident is precautionary so we don't have the second exposure to hospitals or any other people. >> reporter: hazmat crews spent much the of the day decontaminating the center. they hope to be back open at 8:00 tomorrow morning. sky7 hd was overhead in antioch today. police say a man at a mcdonald's dri drive-through started shooting into the restaurant. one person went to the hospital but will be okay. police are still searching for the shooter. one witness tells abc 7 news reporter jonathan bloom that shooting was a domestic dispute. he'll tell us about that in a live report coming up on abc 7 news at 5. tush turning to the race for the white house, another republican bowed out today leaving the road clear for donald trump. >> karen travers joins us live from washington, d.c., with the latest. >> reporter: good afternoon, lara and ama.

republicans today are wrapping their head around the inevitable. the party chairman saying that donald trump is their guy. but it's going to take some time to bring the party together after such a bruising primary process. and then there was one. after a decisive win in indiana, donald trump is the last man standing in the republican race. >> it's been some unbelievable day and evening and year. >> reporter: ted cruz vowed to fight trump all the way to the convention. instead, after a crushing loss, bowed out. >> with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign. >> reporter: and today john kasich announcing he's ending his bid as well. >> the people of our country changed me. they changed me with the stories of their lives. >> reporter: on the democratic side, bernie sanders not going anywhere. >> i think we can pull off one ever the great political upsets

in the history of the united states. >> reporter: he pulled out a four-point win over hillary clinton last night, but her focus is already shifted to trump. she told cnn -- >> he is a loose cannon and loose cannons tend to misfire. >> reporter: so has trump. >> we're going after hillary clinton. she will not be a great president. >> reporter: and he'll have to make a hard sell. a new national poll from cnn today shows hilary clint p with a 13-point lead over donald trump. larry? ama? >> karen, what about bernie sanders, though? how long does he stay in the brace? >> reporter: he says he is there until the bitter end. he told npr today he's staying until the final primary, and he thinks his candidacy and him staying in this race is actually good for the republican party. he says it's good for democracy. and it's good for the country because he's starting a political revolution and he thinks he's engaging people, getting them involved in the political process, and that's

important. of course, that's not something that the clinton campaign in brooklyn would agree with, but, that said, they are firmly putting their eyes on the general election in november. >> thank you, karen. the proposed legalization of marijuana will be on the november ballot in california. the measure has the necessary signatures and the money to convince voters. >> abc 7 news reporter lyanne mill melendez has more. >> reporter: 400,000 signatures were required. proponents of this proposition managed to collect 600,000. now, who gets to sell it first if it passed? medical marijuana businesses will get priority for all new licenses. >> join us in tearing down this wall. >> reporter: it was a who's who of supporters of the proposed control, regulate and tax adult use of marijuana act. a long name with more than enough money to run an efgtive campaign. for starters, the measure would

make it legal for anyone over 21 to grow up to seven plants and have an ounce of the drug without any implications. those in law enforcement who back the measure say illegal marijuana has caused much harm on our streets. >> the trades, the cartels emerging, the gangs emerging on our streets. >> reporter: as a result, studies have shown that communities of color has been disproportionately targeted. >> they targeted the african-american community, latino community right from the get-go. we watched almost 40, 50 years of will it happen rnkts licensed marijuana growers growers will get taxed. there will be a 15% tax on all retail sales. >> we're not just controlling more flow of money by taxing this, but we're also eliminating the kostd cost of having the police arrest somebody, take them to trial, prosecute them. >> reporter: opponents believe it will make it easier for young adults to have access to marijuana. >> the harm that it will cause is much more expensive to the state than any revenue that

could be accomplished through taxation. >> reporter: but lieutenant governor gavin newsom says there will be more money to keep kids from using in the first place or stopping altogether. >> which 80% of those dollars are prescribed in this initiative go back to children prevention programs, treatment programs an law enforcement. i think it's a game changer. i think it will reduce use and abuse by our children. >> reporter: if it passes in november, these changes won't happen overnight. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. there are new details involving north carolina now on notice that it must confirm by monday it will not comply or implement the state's new lgbt law. that request came today from the white house. the law limits protection for transgender people and requires them to use restrooms that match the gender on their birth certificates. the department of justice says the measure violates federal civil rights law. turn to the weather now. get ready for some more rain. we have a live look from our

exploreatorium camera. looks like it's getting ready to rain. >> spencer christian is here with our accuweather update. >> it is getting ready to rain. the weather in the bay area is pretty quiet but not so quiet north and east. here is live doppler 7 hd, partly cloudy over the immediate bay area. but north of ukiah, lines of thunderstorms with lightning strikes this afternoon, continuing into the late afternoon. then over into our east, in the sierra, a long line of thunderstorms, lightning strikes reaching from susanville down to south lake tahoe. the scene is quiet over san francisco from sutro tower, currently 62 in san francisco, oakland 67, 59 at half moon bay. as we look at the golden gate bridge, partly to mostly cloudy skies, low 70s at novato, fairfield, concord and livermore. a forecast animation, starting 7:00 this evening, we may see showers vepg as early as 10:00

th tonight along the coast of the peninsula and down into the santa cruz mountains overnight into tomorrow morning, the morning commute may get off to a wet start as it looks like we'll have scattered showers at that time, 5:00 a.m. and a scattered showery pattern will continue into the midday hours, even the late afternoon, looking a little more widespread, maybe even steadier. it could be a wet commute in the evening tomorrow as well. we'll look beyond that and take you into the evening forecast a little later. >> thank you, spencer. a reminder to keep track of the weather where you live with the abc 7 news app. download it for free and track live drop letter 7 hd anytime. a mother made an emotional plea today for help finding her son's killer. alberto antenna was shot three years ago along grisly peak boulevard in the berkeley hills. police say he was killed by a man after breaking up a fight between two strangers. today uc berkeley realized a sketch of the suspect. >> he didn't care if he sue someone that was being

disrespected or someone that didn't stand a chance, couldn't stand up for themselves, he would intervene. >> santana was 21 when he was killed. he was a student at olney college. police are offering a $10,000 award for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. a collision late last night at 5th street and lincoln avenue, police say a speeding driver hit an officer's car and took off. the officer had to be freed from his own car by bystanders. he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the driver was later arrested. two popular golden gate bridge vantage points will be off limits this mother's day. private cars won't be able to park at the welcome center in san francisco or at vista point on the marin side. the closure runs from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. sunday, only tour buses can still access both lots. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4, an entire city forced to evacuate in canada as a wildfire

oakland. sunnyvale. and all the bay area. this is abc 7 news. students and faculty at a normally quiet south bay college are battling over whether to arm security guards on their 12,000-student campus. >> this is happening today at gave land college in gilroy. but two other bay area community colleges are also considering having their campus security guards carry guns. >> abc 7 news reporter david louie is live at gat lan college where petitions are circulating. >> reporter: ama and larry, gat lan has had unarmed security guards on campus for many years, escorting students to cars or handling burglary reports. but nothing seems tranquil forever. now the campus is abuzz debating whether an armed deputy sheriff should be hired to work during the day. >> we wanted the discussion to happen a long time ago not a week before the vote. >> reporter: it's a short time frame. the college district trustees are set to vote next wednesday whether to hire an armed share

to be on the campus, the cost $248,000, a figure an administrator doesn't dispute. and now students and faculty are debating whether they want this. connor gowynn is a 29-year-old student and veteran. >> they are the only deterrent if we have an active shooter on campus. >> reporter: jane is a fine arts chair. >> it could be a target for someone for an active shooter for someone that is of grave concern obviously. we want to protect our community the best we can. i just don't know if this is the right plan for it. >> reporter: gat lan is normally a quiet campus, but it's become the equivalent of london's hyde park, a prevalence for free speech. >> i will be voting no on this item, and that is because our student senate has voted no. right now we have a petition of over 350 signatures from students who are also opposed. >> reporter: no incident

triggered the proposal to hire an armed deputy. they haven't had recent sexual assaults or homicide. two drug violations, one liquor violation and one weapons possessions incident since 2014. >> having law enforcement on campus will provide some safety that we don't have the ability to provide right now. >> reporter: in gilroy, david louie, abc 7 news. burlingame police need your help in finding three men who robbed a popular dough naught shop early monday morning. >> it was a particularly violent confrontation and all caught on surveillance video. >> abc 7 news anchor kristen sze now here with the footage. >> larry and ama, this happened at the royal doughnut shop. it's locationed at the caltrain station a block from burlingame high school and the burlingame avenue shopping district. now we're going to show you the surveillance video police just released. it all began when this man wearing black in the baseball cap comes in, mraiszs an order and then a warning. the video gets much more

disturbing. two accomplices come rushing in. the one in a gray sweatshirt jumps over-the-counter and holds a gun to the clerk's face as they argue. meantime, the other two unplug the atm and carry it out the front door with an unknown amount of cash. now, they did not take any money from the cash register. the robber in gray continues to attack the clerk. look at this. at one point he tries to tie the clerk up with an apron. then he beats the clerk with an ice scooper. eventually the three robbers leave and the clerk is able to call police. he suffered facial injuries and was taken to the hospital but will be fine. you see the scooper right there, the ice scooper, as he leaves. police say the only gun brandished at the scene was actually dropped. we'll show you that. it turned out to be a fake. they're still looking for the trio. i just talked to police about a half hour ago. they say that is the case. if you have any information, please call burlingame police. ama and larry? >> kristen, thank you so much. union bank is apologizing to customers after a glitch that left some customers in a panic.

that glitch was fixed last night. a software update yesterday had some people seeing red. people logged on to their account and saw a zero dollar balance. that will make you panic. not only that, customers couldn't withdraw or deposit money. union bank issued this statement saying, the issue has been resolved and customers can resume all banking activities. we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. facebook is paying out over $10,000 to a 10-year-old boy from finland. that money is a reward after the little boy alerted the social media giant that they had a security flaw on instagram which is owned by facebook. reports say the young hacker found he could delete other people's comments on the photo sharing service using malicious code. facebook operates a so-call ed bounty program that rewards those who report a vulnerability in their service. that was a $10,000 reward for that discovery, i guess you could call it. >> wow. incredible. well, it's time to turn to

our weather, which as you can tell rain may be moving in. >> spencer christian does not yet have his umbrella. >> not yet. although there were scattered sprinkles reported earlier this morning. that was before i got to work. right now things are dry. let's take a look at live doppler 7 hd. skies are bright, but partly to mostly cloudy across the bay area. this is how it looks on live doppler 7 hd. this is a live view from our abc 7 florida tore yum camera looking out over the bay. these are our forecast features. a chance of showers thursday, friday and early saturday. it's likely to be wettest on friday and dry and milder mother's day. here is our storm impact scale which we've been using throughout the winter and now the spring to rank every storm coming through the bay area, 1 being a light storm, 5 being severe. and the approaching system ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. showers likely through saturday, rainfall totals ranging from 0.100 to 0.50.

there is the possibility of thund erd and maybe even hail. here is our forecast animation. overnight, we'll see areas of showers developing. it could be a wet start to the morning commute tomorrow so bear that in mind if you're an early morning commuter. we'll have showers continuing throughout the day, widely scattered. but some could be locally heavy for brief periods of time. going into the evening commute tomorrow, it looks like there will be wet spots as well. then into early friday morning, we'll see more widespread areas of showers developing so the friday morning commute is more likely to be wet than the one tomorrow morning. then through the day friday into early saturday we'll see periods of showers continuing. so this pattern will stay with us for the next three days and we project that rainfall totals by midday saturday will range from, oh, about 0.10 to 0.50 to central bay area, up to 0.50 in the wettest north bay locations. for tonight, look for

mcdonald's testing out a new recipe that it hopes will leave its competition stinking mad. >> yes. the fast food chain is now offering gilroy garlic fries in the south bay. oh, yeah. abc 7 news reporter matt keller has the tasty details. >> reporter: mcdonald's putting a little sizzle into its classic french fry recipe. the fast food chain is trying out gilroy garlic fries at three of its restaurants in san jose and one in santa clara. even non-french fry fans are intrigued. >> i don't eat fries anywhere. >> reporter: but if they added garlic would you be interested? >> possibly. you bet. you talked me into going in and trying them. i'll have to go try them. >> reporter: this video is provided by mcdonald's. company says it ae's getting it garlic from a ranch in gilroy. other ingredients are parmesan and salt and as this worker

abc 7 news. in news making headlines at 4:30, a hazmat situation in the south bay sent seven people to the hospital including two children. abc 7 news was at the indian health center in san jose where a dental chemical spilled. the victims are expected to be okay. there was a prince buzz today in mill valley after reports that an addiction specialist there was set to meet with the singer. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman tweeted this picture of what was a media mob scene outside the doctor's office. wayne will have a live report coming up at 5. a major decision issued today concerning north carolina's lgbt law. abc news tweeting the department of justice determines the law violates civil rights and the white house alerted north carolina's governor that he has until monday to confirm that the state will not comply with or implement that law. developing news north of the border, a raging wildfire has forced the largest evacuation in canada history. flames have chased the entire population of one city from

their homes. offers from help from across the country. janet berks has the latest. >> nothing left essentially. >> i can feel the heat here. this is insane. >> reporter: this video showing the apocalyptic scene as residents had to drive past a wall of flames to the only highway out of town when the fire suddenly shifted yesterday, forcing 80,000 people to flee. >> this was nothing short of something that comes out of the movies. the flames, you couldn't even look up high enough. they were so dark. >> i know when i left it was raining ashes. >> reporter: jason blair and his family including a 2-week-old baby, are among those who headed south to safety, taking shelter away from the chaos. now worried if their home will survive. >> my wife is bouncing my 2-week-old with a tear in her eye trying to be strong and asking, what are we going to do? >> reporter: while nothing was burning within city limits this morning, officials fully expected the fire to flare up again amid record high temperatures, winds and

tinder-dry conditions. >> we expect it to be a worse fire day than yesterday. >> reporter: dozens of aircraft and more than 100 firefighters are battling the fire. the mill ter has been called in to help. but some fear it could still be a losing battle. >> it is a possibility that we may lose a large portion of the town, yes. >> reporter: as of noon, roughly 1600 homes, buildings and other structures had been damaged or destroyed. >> our province is strong, and we will get through this. >> reporter: emergency shelters are being set up in neighboring towns and a major evacuation center has been opened in edmonton to cope with all the evacuees. >> no lives lost. that's what we have to concentrate on right now. >> reporter: there are worries right now that the airport and other neighborhoods could be threatened by fire. and while cooler temperatures are in the forecast, that typically comes with lightning which could spark more fires. janet deshgz for abc news, ft. mcmurray. now to your voice, your vote. as we've been reporting, ohio governor john kasich has taken

his name out of presidential race. >> and as i suspend my campaign today, i have renewed faith, deeper faith, that the lord will show me the way forward and fulfill the purpose of my life. >> joining us now for more analysis, abc 7 news political analyst and political reporter carla marinucci. let's start with the republican situation. what does this mean for the upcoming california primary? is it now kind of a moot situation? >> yeah. you know, donald trump has emerged the last man standing in this gop slamdown. does it mean california is totally irrelevant? no. it's taken a lot of the drama out. but the fact is early voting starts next week. he still needs 200 delegates to get the nomination, 172 of them here in california. the trump people say they will continue to campaign here, probably not as much. he also has to unite the party and work with some of these down-ticket candidates. he has his work cut out for him still despite this latest turn.

>> for the democrats, though, bernie sanders has really been staffing up here in california, not giving up without a fight. >> exactly. >> does he have a chance? >> he's fighting it out. he's here in california this week. hillary clinton is here this week. they both say they're going to take it all the way to the end. i think what you're going to see is a very spirited fight on the democratic side. republican side looks finished. the democratic side, hillary clinton has a very big lead on the delegates. he would need a landslide in just about every contest to come out ahead. but his people are holding on. >> back to the trump situation here in california, is there an active dump trump campaign? and is there a chance that that could do anything going forward and carrying forward into the convention? >> you know, there was a spirited dump trump movement going on. what i saw last weekend at the state republican convention they've come to an acceptance that this is their guy. now they have to figure out how to heal this party and how to work with congressional races,

senate races assembly races where candidates are going to have that trump label put around their neck. and the question is, will a lot of republicans just sit home and not vote if they don't like trump? this is where republicans have a challenge here in california. it's going to be interesting all the way down to june 7th. >> wow. all right, carla, thank you for joining us, for your analysis. there are date that's you need to know leading up to california's primary. the deadline to register to vote or to change your party affiliation is may 23rd. you can request a vote by mail ballot flu the end of may. california primary is scheduled for june the 7th. president obama traveled to flint, michigan, today to hear from residents about the lead water crisis and to have a drink. >> generally, i have not been doing stunts here, but -- and this used a filter. it just confirms what we know scientifically, which is that if you're using a filter, if you're

condensed to three minutes and told through a cell phone conversation. the clip comes complete with music and epic light saber battle and millenium falcon noises. it wouldn't be complete without that. disney owns the rights to the star wars franchise. >> i wonders if anybody can get those eemojis. the warriors jumping on the may 4th bandwagon according to the "san francisco chronicle." this is more of a chronicle idea as you can see the fourth is with them. and a big picture. festus was completely in focus last night. didn't play at all in game one of the series and played in the fourth quarter, entered the game in the fourth quarter, and he was huge for the warriors last night. without him, they do not win that game for sure. warriors now in command of their western conference semifinal series against portland following that impressive come-from-behind win last night. the warriors outscored the

we could have a few scattered showers starting early tomorrow. over the next three days showers are likely from time to time. tomorrow statewide it looks like a showery unsettled sort of dreary day from top to bottom. all across the stielt. here in the bay area, mostly cloup cloutdy skies and scatt scattered showers likely, probably more widespread on friday. highs tomorrow range from 60 at the coast to mid to upper 60s around the bay and upper 60s to low 70s in the mildest inland locations. for the season to date, our rainfall totals are near or above average in most locations, which is good news, although a bit below average at sfo and over at oakland airport. so we could certainly use more rain. for the week ahead, notice we'll have quite a warm-up early next week after a few days through the weekend of below-average temperatures in livermore. we expect temperatures to bounce up to low 80s in livermore on tuesday and wednesday. that will be the pattern for much of the bay area.

about non-insulin victoza®. it's covered by most health plans. this man you see here has been arrested for allegedly spraying poisonous chemicals in michigan at produce and food bars at grocery stores. here's the latest. >> reporter: the fbi arrested the man in this photograph after they say he was caught spraying a mixture of hand sanitizer and rat poison on produce at three michigan grocery stores, including whole foods, meyer, and plum market, all in ann arbor. rat poison can prevent blood from clotting after initial contact and can irritate the skin when touched. >> it's very creepy. >> i'd like to wring his neck. >> reporter: investigators say the man reportedly confessed to the crime and was picked up after tips from the public. >> we ended up with numerous leads off of that.

glad you asked about it. the law in the state of california says a remodel contractor can only ask for 10% or $1,000, whichever is less, before they start work. now, as they go through the process, they can say, okay, now i need money for this, now i need money for this, and make sure you never allow money to get in front of work. that's extremely important. there's one exception to this rule. a couple of really big companies put down a huge bond and in the state says they can collect all the money up front. one of those is home depot. >> t.w. e-mailed, what action can we take to get our refunds for janet jackson concert tickets. >> there was big news. glad you brought that up. she's pregnant. it was announced today. certainly the planning worked. we looked into this. we got some questions about this, and they're going to honor those tickets on the next tour or when rescheduled tour is set up. so you can either wait.

unnecessary. the cdc say as much as 30% of all antibiotic prescriptions written after outpatient visits were not actually needed. children under the age of 10 are being prescribed the drugs at the highest rate. a lot of restaurants claim their food is farm to table these days but how do you really know? the "tampa bay times" set out to verify the claims via dna testing food samples and calling up or visiting farms. a reporter sofr discovered that an alarming number of restaurants were flat-out lying about where the food came from. some items came from overseas and were treated with preservatives. others were not grown on the farms but claimed. bug repellent makers and retailers are gearing up for the zika virus. cvs is among stores which plans to stock more anti-mosquito spray after strong sales. others are adding more information about zika. manufacturers have moved up their processing to get more product to the stores as well.

a san francisco family is awaiting a life changing donation for their 20-month-old toddler hannah. she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. to help her while she waits for a match, doctors in palo alto have put her on a heart pump to prevent a serious failure. the average wait is six to eight months. in the meept, doctors say hannah is friendly and loves to wander around the hospital and say hi to everyone she sees. >> what a cutie. a boy from hawaii who came to the bay area for a life saving operation is recovering and getting a lot of help after his family's car was broken into here in san francisco. >> abc 7 news reporter vic lee was first to tell us about the family's loss and after he did, abc 7 news viewers, police officers and bay area celebrities all stepped up to help. >> reporter: the surprise visit came as 14-year-old kakaya ahuna

was recuperating from his surgery at stanford hospital last week. doctors said it went well, the difficult procedure that removed the brain tumor. the family had been through a lot already when they first came to san francisco, their parked car had been broken into at fisherman's wharf, their belongings stolen. abc 7 news reported the story. the response was amazing. the san francisco police union took the family to best buy. they replaced the boy's brother's laptop and camera. but the items that meant the most to the boy's mom were the get well cards from family and friends that were also stolen. >> i was really saving them for him to read them to him while he wa in the hospital during recove recovery. and those are the kind of things that can't be replaced. >> reporter: but lynn cameron did what she could. she asked her young skaters at the nazareth rink to make get
