moving to our south, just south of san jose right now. most of the bay area is under generally dry conditions but this is a wide path of downpours reitz now reaching from monterey to the gilroy area. but it's tapering off and moving southward. speaking of southward, down in the san joaquin valley along interstate 5 we have a line of powerful thunderstorms breaking out in that region near co-aling ga. you'll show you what may be coming our way in a moment. but first our rainfall totals in the last 24 hours, not too impressive. most locations have under a tenth of an inch, but we're right at a tenth in mountain view, 0.17 in san jose, 0.16 in livermore. here's the forecast animation starting 5:00 p.m., we'll see scattered showers into the evening hours, 2:00 a.m. a wide swath of showers and light rain will swing through the north bay and central part of the bay area. that will be followed by another path of rain at about 8:00 tomorrow morning. so it's not ending yet. even at midday tomorrow as it

another who was covered by an umbrella. you haven't forgotten it does rain here occasionally. >> every once in a while. >> reporter: are you surprised by the rain today? >> i was. i went in nor an appointment and it seems to be coming down pretty hard. >> reporter: when you're desperate for cover, where can you find an umbrella in a pinch? this is the umbrella salon in downtown san jose. i wonder if they sell umbrellas here. do you sell umbrellas here? >> no. >> reporter: it was opening day for farmer's market but the rain put a damper on it. vendors say they would have liked a sunny day, but silver says they were doing okay. >> it's probably a little slower than it normally would be, but i've had a lot of traffic at my booth and have made good sales today. so it's been great. we need the rain. >> reporter: it was an excuse to share an umbrella, of course, and to learn how a malfunctioning umbrella can leave you perplexed. these visitors from colorado were getting soaked, too.

were in extreme drought. >> yellow is good. in the race for the white house, hillary clinton is campaigning here in the bay area today. this is video as she dropped into her oakland campaign headquarters. this was about an hour ago. we have a live look from sky7 hd where you can see a large crowd still lined up to try to clear security and get inside to see the candidate. after mrs. clinton will finish in oakland, she is off to san francisco for an event at the masonic center. that event gets mr way at 5:00. another live look inside the school where mrs. clinton is expected to take the stage pretty much at any moment. it looks packed in there. laura anthony is there live outside. laura? >> reporter: people are still lined up out here even though they just got the word it's full inside that auditorium, the school. you can see still people out here. they're being told they can go in to maybe an overflow room at this point. several hundred people already inside. earlier today secretary clinton made a quick pit stop at her

newly opened campaign office downtown with the mayor at her side. >> with her help, we'll get there. >> reporter: hillary clinton stopped by her oakland campaign office before heading to a scheduled event near lake merritt. >> i just had to come and say thank you and to give you a big boost the energy because it's going to be a great month. we're going to be working hard. there's nothing like a good campaign to bring people together. >> reporter: clinton arrived in the bay area one day removed from this. large protests in los angeles. >> i'm with her! i'm with her! >> reporter: in oakland, clinton supporters lined up early. >> i'm here to see hillary and support hillary for president of the united states. >> i think hillary has got the goods and it means a lot to me family as well and my mom to have a woman president. >> reporter: clinton's well ahead of bernie sanders in the primaries but also well aware the senator from vermont isn't going away.

from oakland to san francisco. traffic is almost nonexistent right now, the bay bridge toll plaza. that's good news. the event in san francisco begins at 5:00. no word on exactly when clinton will arrive in san francisco, but remember we've also got a giants game. it's going to get crowded on the bay bridge coming into the city later on tonight. come up at 4:30, tensions getting high on the republican side of the big names who say they will not stand behind donald trump. and here are some important dates as we head toward california's primary. you can start sending your vote by mail ballots on monday. the deadline to register to vote or change your barty's affiliation is may 23rd. you can request a vote by mail ballot through the end of may. california voters go to the polls on tuesday june 7th. a federal officer is in custody now after a string of deadly shootings that happened this morning in maryland. 62-year-old ew landfall low tordil is accused of shooting three people at a westfield mall in bethesda, maryland, this morning. one victim has died. authorities believe he's

responsible for killing a woman at a nearby grocery store. tordil is believed to have shot and killed his estranged wife outside a high school yesterday evening. >> this has been a hectic and dynamic scene, and it continues to be dynamic. >> tordil was placed on administrative duties at his federal protective service job. he was stripped of his gun and badge after he was accused of threatening to harm his wife if she left him. abc 7 news was at the alameda county superior courthouse today as an oakland family celebrated a guilty verdict. a jury found 25-year-old darnell williams guilty of two murders, the victims 8-year-old alicia carradine killed at a sleep-over in oakland in july of 2013 and anthony ma dairs shot to death two months later after a dice game in berkeley. a penalty phase will begin later this month to determine if williams deserves the death penalty or life prison. a woman was stabbed to death in a home in san francisco.

police say the homicide happened just before 11:00 on arkansas street near 19th street. officers detained a male suspect at the scene. the motive in the killing still unknown at this point. the victim's identity has not yet been release pd. there are new developments in the rape allegations against dana stubblefield. today his lawyer filed a motion asking a judge to recuse the sanlt clara district attorney's office accusing it of prejudicial conduct and stra grandstanding. >> for more than a year, the district attorney did not act on this particular incident. a year later, though, they showed up at mr. stubblefield's children's school, with a press release in one hand and handcuffs in another to arrest him. >> his attorney accuses the d.a.'s office of leaking information to prejudice the case. he wants the attorney general's office to take over. the d.a. office issued a statement saying, quote, our response is the evidence we will preblt in court.

months. the average gain has been running around 200,000 jobs a month. the unemployment rate remained at a low of 5%. the economy's growth has slumped to a sluggish 1% annual rate since october. facebook lost the first round of a legal battle today over user privacy. >> a judge is allowing a lawsuit to go forward leerelating to onf its features. kristen sze is here to show us what this is all about. >> ama and larry, you know how you post a picture of you and your friends before you tag them, suggestion names pop up? that's what happened here when an abc 7 colleague posted this picture of dan and me. you can see that's because facebook software recognizes and identifies faces. cool technology but not so cool for privacy advocates. three illinois users filed lawsuits now combined into one. they claim facebook's facial recognition software used for tagging suggestions in photos violates the law. illinois is one of only three states that have laws regulating the technology requiring an

omit-in. today a san francisco federal judge turned down the menlo park social media's giant's request to have the case thrown out. facebook argued its tagging is fully disclosed in terms of service and users can opt out. it also tried to say california law should apply. and face print technology is legal here now. we want to show you how you can opt out of having your name pop up when friends post pictures. so after you log in, you're going to want to go to settings. after you do settings, click on that one, time line and tagging. from there, you want to go to the very last thing on the page that says who sees tag suggestions when photos that look like you are uploaded. what you're going to do is just click the drop-down menu, see there, change the settings from the default friends to no one. that's it. you're done. if facebook ends up losing this battle, it will have to revise its user agreements. google have to do it possibly as well because it uses the same technology in google photos to detect faces. >> kristen, thank you. tonight at 6:30, after abc 7

we had wetter spots this morning with the big wet spot right now down south around gilroy. seems to be winding down a bit. but look at how active that line of shower and rain looks on the monitor from monterey up to gilroy and out to sea. so very active weather there. but much of the bay area is calm at the moment as you can see from this view from our rooftop camera over the bay. it's 60 in mountain view, san jose 68, 64 at morgan hill, 65 at half moon bay. golden gate bridge does not appear wet, 60 degrees at santa rosa, napa 61, 63 in novato convict toward 59 livermore 60. and looking out over the bay from our abc 7 exploratorium camera, showers will diminish tomorrow, but a few will still hang around. isolated thunder and hail are still possible though not likely. it will being dry and milder for mother's day, yay. here is our storm impact scale. we've been ranking every storm the past two seasons, 1 light to

5 severe. the storm with us right now ranks 1 on the storm impact scale, light intensity, scattered showers continue through saturday. rainfall totals may be up to about 0.40 and isolated thunder is possible. here's the animation starting 7:00 this evening during the overnight hours, we'll see several lines of showers move through the bay area. could be locally heavy downpours in there. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, it looks pretty wet across the bay area. later in the day, midday or so, we'll see a more spotty or scattered shower activity. that's how it will remain until that 7:00 p.m. tomorrow, there's another little wave of rain coming through. then it will all set to taper off into sunday. we might see a spot or two of light shower activity early sunday. that's about all that will develop. rainfall totals at the end of this system, late tomorrow night, generally up to about a quarter of an inch, maybe 0.40 in fairfield, lows tonight mid-50s, mild. and tomorrow there will be a

gop together. karen travers, abc news, washington. >> and another live look now from oakland where hillary clinton is holding a campaign rally in the east bay. you see her speaking there. the democratic presidential candidate is making a couple of stops in the bay area during this latest visit. and this event in oakland is the first. clinton's next event in the bay area will take place at the masonic auditorium in san francisco's knob hill. a live look from outside there. the event is a fund raiser for her campaign. it will be attended by both california senators and protesters as well who plan on meeting her outside. many of them are vocal supporters of clinton's democratic opponent bernie sanders. a majority of americans like the job that president obama is doing. a new cnn/orc poll shows 51% of those surveyed approve of the president's performance, 46% disapprove. it was the same numbers as in a marked survey the sustained positive approval for the president comes as more say they believe things in the country are generally going well.

reviews of the economy have become slightly more positive since february. the pictures of that wildfire in canada, they're just stunning. take a look. residents continue to seek refuge from the dangerous fire that's destroyed towns, left many homeless and taken the life of a teenager. abc news reporter melissa ed zotty brings us the latest. >> reporter: images coming out of alberta, canada, are devastating. >> oh, my gosh! >> reporter: the province in a state of emergency. the city of ft. mcmurray in ruins as a massive wildfire refuses to lose steam. tens of thousands fleeing their homes, the fire exploding to more than 200,000 acres. to put that into perspective, ten times the size of manhattan. as the blaze continues to rage, the family of a 16-year-old girl a triplet and daughter of a local firefighter mourn. the teen was killed in a car accident as she attempted to flee the fires.

residents taking one last look at their homes. >> might have been the last time i see my house. holy [ bleep ] rnchtsz surveillance cameras capturing the final moments that the wildfire continues its march of destruction. >> lord, keep us safe. >> reporter: in a time of crisis, they are all united. >> alberta and all of canada are with you. we have your back. and we are going to make sure you have the help you need. today tomorrow and in the weeks and months to come as we rebuild. >> reporter: forecasters say they expect favorable winds to push the fire away from homes in the next few days. allegiant air has apologized to a family in belmont after they were kicked off a flight. kies sa dana tweeted about the incident in provo, utah. we let allegiant know that my son had a peanut allergy so they kick us off the plane. dana asked the airline to not

this year's top student at uc berkeley is a millennial who shies away from twitter and facebook. instead, she has a greater connection to math. she'll receive the university medal and deliver the commencement speech at cal a week from saturday. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez has her story. >> reporter: when she's not

teach willing a class in math to other cal students or volunteering at an after-school literacy program, this is what she enjoys doing the most. pure mathematics. >> it really never stops because we've ultimately realized that we understand almost nothing. it's a never ending journey, keep trying to understand, dig deeper and hopefully arrive at something. >> reporter: hollywood has made a few movies inspired by math intellectuals and their struggle to make some kind of contribution in their world. this student has many had her own struggles. >> i was struggling with motivation. it took something pretty strong i think to make me feel like i had a purpose. >> reporter: she found motivation and passion through her professors at cal. today she wants other women to know that math is within their reach. >> oftentimes women haven't necessarily been welcomed by the majority of men, but it just led to several problems. i think we are in a changing society. i'm optimistic. >> reporter: her other passion

is playing a classic indian music. all of her work acknowledged with the university medal. >> in that sense it's very encouraging for me personally but at the same time i think i'm just still a little overwhelmed by all of this. >> reporter: from here, she is headed to m.i.t. to work on her phd. in berkeley, lianyanne melendez >> wow. time now for "ask finney." michael finney here asking questions send sent in. why do people search websites say free reports and when you get the report it costs you money? i only want addresses and phone you numbers. >> nowadays addresses and phone numbers cost you money. back in the day we all had the telephone books and you had the name, address and telephone number. most people don't give out that information to the phone companies anymore. some do. there are some white pages website that's will give you information. if you dial information, you've got to pay i think $1.49 now for the information. i don't even think they'll give

you the address. kind of tough nowadays. why do they say it's free? because they want you to click on the web site. they do tell you, there are 15 michael finneys in the bay area or whatever. >> good luck. >> yeah, right. >> unless you want to pay. >> i have san francisco parking tickets that are over two years. is there a way around the penalties? >> ha ha ha ha. come on, you're kidding, right? they make so much money off of parking fines and the penalties. there's no way. but there is a way actually. you're good to have to do some hard labor for it. they allow you to volunteer and work it off. well, it's not volunteer. they allow you to go work it off if you can't afford it. they also will allow you to do a payment plan, go online, check it out. there are ways to get out of writing that big check right now. there isn't a way out of either paying with your time or your money. >> had so much faith in you when i saw the question. i thought, wow, this going to be

good. shouldn't the state have a 20% or more water reduction until we're out of this drought? or have they solved the water problem? >> you know, it kind of sounds that way, but it hasn't changed that much. the state water board had told us all to save 25%, and that expired in february. i think right at the end of february. but they put a new rule in and now they say it's 20% to 23%. so it's about the same. it's about the 20% you're talking about. we are in the fourth year of drought. el nino and the water that came with it did help us some, as you guys have reported. they're doing away with some of the fines. yeah, we're still supposed to preserve water. by the way, that lasts until october. then they'll have to make another decision. >> thank you, michael. $2, just $2, could make your dreams come true this weekend. the powerball jackpot is $415 million and rising. that's the seventh largest

tank at 9:00, 20/20 at 10:00. >> then at 11:00, how you may be buying substandard products without even knowing it. a special "7 on your side" investigation on abc 7 news at 11. in fremont, community members are stepping up to help meals on wheels. >> two people have been booked on multiple charges. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen explains how the program is hoping to move forward. >> reporter: it is a bold act that left many people stunned. >> how awful is this to happen, and to all the people who needed that food? >> reporter: in fremont, two people tried to take a car if a woman at walnut plaza but were unsuccessful. following that failed attempt, they ran over to city hall and jump nood a meals on wheels truck being stocked. >> i was loading my coolers. i hear this screaming. i turn around and chaos. >> reporter: volunteer debra powell was there and witnessed all of it. >> i couldn't believe it. i thought i was watching a movie. i've never in my life experienced that. >> reporter: jose showed up to

deliver meals not knowing what happened. >> having the truck be stolen like that is unthinkable. >> reporter: the two suspects led officers on a pursuit from fremont to castro valley which not only ended in their arrest but also major damage to the truck which is only a year and a half old. program officials say it will likely be a total loss and are now relying on a backup truck built in the 1980s. >> we have 380 people that we have to serve every day, and they count on our meals. so we have to be here. no matter what. >> reporter: the fire department will house the damaged truck until it can be officially assessed by the insurance adjustor. regardless of the total amount, meals on wheels says they'll need to raise thousands of dollars. meal recipients say they're grateful the program will press on despite the unexpected expense. >> a lot of bad things going on, and still there are good people. so we meet a lot of good people. >> reporter: in fremont, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> and thank you for joining us for abc 7 news at 4.

schaaf and barbara bexer. clinton hit on women's issues, raising the minimum wage and california's role in deciding the next president. >> there is work to be done, and it is important work. and the best way we can achieve it is by unifying our country. everybody knows that we can't continue to be divided. we cannot continue to allow americans to be scapegoated and insulted. that is no way to build the future that we want to see! >> reporter: before arriving here for her scheduled event, secretary clinton made a pit stop at her local campaign headquarters in downtown oakland. there she shook hands, took pictures with supporters and volunteers, and thanked them for their work that they've done and for the work that ne will do in the next several weeks leading up to california's primary on june 7th. >> so i
