but tonight, we'll take you inside the store that sold that winning ticket. and, 911 disconnect. when first responders can't find the emergency. one woman's tragic loss. what you can do to get help fast. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm tom llamas. we begin tonight with breaking news. the center of the country on alert. a tornado watch in four states, an anxious night ahead. a number of twisters firing up over the past 24 hours. this one blowing through the town of wray. five people injured, this home destroyed. hail bouncing off the ground in this parking lot in denver. the severe weather threat moving east tonight. the forecast in a moment. but first, we begin with rob marciano. >> reporter: tonight, blackened skies as severe weather sweeps across the plains. seven reported tornadoes ripping through eastern colorado. >> the big black wall. coming this way.

and you said, things don't look good. let's put the cars in the shed just to keep them out of the hail. >> reporter: david rippe's shed and his four cars crushed, the roof ripped off his home. >> we have windows broken out, it's not pretty. >> reporter: that mammoth twister, captured near the town of wray. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: spewing debris and injuring five people. near denver, hail the size of golf balls ricocheting off of windshields and covering roadways. this, just one of more than 100 reports of severe weather stretching from colorado to kentucky. just east of louisville, powerful winds and rain barreling down on cars. in mt. carmel, illinois, winds gusting to 66 miles per hour, tearing the roof off of this middle school. >> rob joins us live. who is in the bull's eye tonight? >> it's a really big area, from northern nebraska to mexico.

you see the storms across western parts of texas, oklahoma city through wichita. that's where the tornado watches are. that's where it could get dangerous, especially in the next couple of hours frm. any one of the cells could drop a damaging tornado. then the threat shifts east. tulsa, little rock, shreveport. damaging winds, large hail, more tornadoes possible. and also heavy rain. a lot of saturated ground, so flooding will be an issue as well. >> rob, thanks so much. and north of the border, the raging wildfires still racing across the territory. abandoned cars littering the road. police at checkpoints forced to wear masks to breathe. here's neal karlinsky with new images from inside the destruction. >> reporter: in rugged northern alberta, the massive wildfire just won't stop.

but tonight, for the first time, it is slowing down. thanks to much cooler temperatures and even a small amount of rain blowing in. more than 500 firefighters, 15 helicopters and 14 air tankers, taking on a blaze that's grown to more than 620 square miles. the thousands who had been cut off to the north of the fire zone are now safely out of harm's way. >> all i thought is, dear lord, if you can get my children safe, then i don't care. >> reporter: pictures from inside what's left of ft. mcmurray show a city transformed. some homes virtually untouched near others that were incinerated. in all, there are now nearly 90,000 nomads. who have no idea when they will be able to return to their normal lives. >> just if we will have a home to go to. jobs? where are we going to live? >> reporter: some of the areas are too remote for firefighters to get to on the ground. so they've been fighting it with

helicopters, and they've been dropping bucket loads. it continues almost around the clock. tom? >> neal, thank you. let's turn next to the race for the white house. donald trump at odds with key party leaders, including paul ryan. and right from the start, slamming bill clinton for his infidelities. but he didn't always feel that way. here's mary bruce. >> reporter: now in a fierce battle for the critical women's vote, tonight, donald trump says bill clinton is fair game. >> i think he gets involved when she plays the women card. if he's involved in the campaign, he should absolutely, you know, he could be brought into it. >> reporter: his latest shot at hillary clinton, a tirade over her husband's infidelities. >> here's a guy who was impeached because he lied. he lied. remember the famous, "i did not have sex with that woman," and then a couple months later, "i'm guilty."

and she's taking negative ads on me. >> reporter: but back in 2008, trump downplayed president clinton's sex scandal. >> they tried to impeach him which was nonsense. >> reporter: now that trump's the presumptive nominee, clinton says concerned republicans are turning to her. >> i've had a lot of outreach on republicans in the last days who say that they are interested in talking about that. >> reporter: fighting on two fronts. trump is also warring with republican leaders who want him to unify the party. but trump says, not so fast. >> does it have to be unified? i'm very different than everybody else, perhaps, that's ever run for office. i actually don't think so. >> reporter: trump's next big test, a meeting this week with house speaker paul ryan, who's still withholding his endorsement. a move that has sarah palin vowing to help kick ryan out of office. >> his political career is over, but for a miracle. because he has so disrespected the will of the people. >> reporter: trump and ryan will try to smooth things over. but already trump seems open to possibly removing ryan as chair

of the republican convention if he doesn't get onboard. tom? >> mary, thank you. let's turn overseas to north korea. and what seems like another unpredictable turn for the country's young leader. after repeated threats of a nuclear attack, kim jong-un says he will only use them if invaded. but as terry moran reports, we've heard this about-face before. >> reporter: tom, north korean officials describe this to us as a major declaration from kim jong-un, one calling it "a watershed" for this country. in a speech to the ruling party congress, kim jong-un promised that north korea won't use nuclear weapons first unless its sovereignty is invaded by another nuclear power. will abide by non-proliferation rules. and will work to improve ties with, quote, "hostile" nations. north korea has made similar promises before. and under kim, its nuclear and missile programs have dramatically accelerated.

alarming the u.s. and allies, and triggering tough sanctions. the question now, is kim jong-un really charting a new course? or is this just more of the same nuclear gamesmanship this country has been playing for years? tom? >> terry, thank you. now to greece, protesters clashing with police. in front of the parliament building in athens. police firing off tear gas. lawmakers set to vote on a new austerity bill that many fear will deplete their incomes. back in the states, a police officer for the homeland security department accused of

murdering three will appear in court tomorrow. investigators say that two of his victims appear to be good samaritans that died helping others. here's gloria riviera. >> reporter: tonight, gripping new details on the shooting rampage in maryland leading to this dramatic takedown. hours after police say suspended cop eulalio tordil shot and killed his estranged wife, court documents allege he botched two carjackings, looking for a new getaway car. his first target, a woman leaving the mall. she told police tordil flashed a gun at her, and asked -- "is that your car?" "yes," she said. then, "i'm not kidding, i will shoot you." she yells for help. two men, good samaritans, respond. tordil shoots all three. according to police. >> these two men acted selflessly and heroically. not only coming to her aid, but likely saving her life. these men are heroes. >> reporter: one of those men fighting for his life tonight. the other, malcolm winfell, honored at a vigil. >> everybody in the world that met my husband knew that he was a gentle giant.

>> reporter: tordil, allegedly killing his third victim, claudina molina, outside this grocery store. fleeing again, before police swarmed his vehicle, capturing him. a protective order by tordil's estranged wife required him to surrender his badge, duty weapon and five other guns. but police say he was able to purchase another weapon. tom? >> gloria, thank you. next to a day at the carnival that went terribly wrong. a girl recovering after a freak accident on one of the rides. another mother jumped in to stop it from spinning. here's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: tonight, this 11-year-old girl in intensive care with severe head injuries after a horrifying accident on this carnival ride in omaha. >> my daughter went through torture. >> reporter: elizabeth gilreath, seen here saturday on the spinning attraction called the king's crown. moments later, witnesses say her hair got stuck in the ride. the other children sitting with her, desperately yelling for help. >> there's absolute terror in their eyes, and some were screaming and crying. it was still spinning. so i stopped it with both my

hands. >> reporter: though experts say traveling carnival rides are generally safe, this comes just one week after another festival nightmare. two teenagers thrown from a ride in el paso, one of them killed. back in omaha, this ride now closed. the investigation, under way. >> we're trying to determine if there was a malfunction or if it was just an accident. >> reporter: and elizabeth's mother, by her bedside. saying she has a long road ahead. >> we're all praying for her, and we love her, and we want her to get better. >> reporter: and she is expected to survive. we reached out to the company that operated the ride but they declined to comment. tom? >> marci, thank you. next to the giant powerball lottery. one winning ticket, but the winner hasn't come forward. but tonight, our first clue. the ticket was purchased at this 7/11 in trenton, new jersey. where people are already showing up to take selfies. the store owners say they're thrilled.

"i will never experience and understand all of the challenges

most single moms face, but i understand a lot more than i did a year ago." sandberg, who sits on the board of abc's parent company disney, wrote the bestselling book "lean in." in it, she encouraged women not to abandon their ambitions after starting families. >> it's time for women to stop paying a penalty they pay for success. >> reporter: in the new post, sandberg acknowledges criticism of her book was fair. the street! >> reporter: but the dispatcher unable to pinpoint her exact location because her call was picked up by a cell tower in a neighboring county. it didn't have maps for her community. >> i spent too much time focusing on what my address was, and not enough time being beside my husband. >> reporter: he did not survive. 70% of 911 calls are made from cell phones. 911 experts say roughly a million of those calls running into trouble because the dispatcher can't locate the caller's exact location. mapping apps on your phone can track your every move, but 911 operators don't have access to the maps on your device. the government is working to change that, but it could take five years. for now, when calling 911 from a cell phone, give your address and your county to get the right dispatcher. >> 911 failed me, not ems or fire. there has to be a better way for citizens to expect that their call goes to the correct location. >> reporter: lauren lyster, abc news, new jersey.

what's your wound? >> i was shot multiple times. gunshot wound to the upper arm, gunshot wound to the right leg. broke my femur, broke my humerus. so now i have a titanium nail up through my femur into my hip. and i have a metal plate over my humerus. >> reporter: that's it? >> that's it, yeah. [ laughter ] >> reporter: he's in orlando at the invictus games to run the 400. it's a mother's day gift for the woman who was there for him as he recovered. >> i told her earlier, i was going to get you a card. but i figured making finals would be the equivalent. and she was like, couldn't ask for anything better. >> reporter: invictus means unconquered. and that's the spirit of these games. more than 500 wounded warriors competing in events like wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, indoor rowing and track. former president george w. bush is there to support the troops. that includes angelo and his mom. for angela, watching her son compete is a dream come true.

next at 6:00, fed but still hungry. protesters change tactics with a plan they hope will discount the city of san francisco. a big turnout expected for california's presidential primaries with early voting about to begin. >> will he or won't he? we answer the question on every warrior fans' mind. abc7 news at 6:00 starts now. a hunger strike in san francisco that called for an end to police violence has itself come to an end. now those behind it are pushing for a citywide strike and boycott. the fit fridays foe swipe were hop hospitalized after eat nothing food. they say they want to send an evening stronger message. let's go to cornell bernard.

>> reporter: tactics are changing but the message is the same. barricades surround the mission police station here on valencia street where the hunger strike began lag month. tonight they're call only citizens to protest, strike and boycott tomorrow. >> hours after ending the hunger strike the frisco five is putting out this message, callingphone are all-day protest and general strike monday morning. they ended their 17-day hunger strike on saturday after the group was admitted to ucsf hospital because of declining heath. the announcement came after religious leaders offered them a prayer for strength. >> they've served our community so well by lifting up so much pain and anger that goes back for decades because of the way people in our communities have been treated by law enforcement. >> the group demanded the fire of police chief greg suhr after two shooting death of minoritieses by police. friday
