>> just a typical wednesday night for steph as we say good morning on this thursday morning. it's going to be a big day in d.c. the big republican meeting there. donald trump face-to-face with the house speaker paul ryan. >> it's just hours away from trump and ryan and other party leaders meeting on capitol hill to work on unifying the gop after ryan said he wasn't ready to endorse trump. >> a live picture there of washington, and trump is getting slammed by democrats and republicans alike for not releasing his taxes. we're going to get the latest right now from d.c. abc's stephanie ramos with us. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. what a meeting, right? if only i had an invite. donald trump, he seems to be ready to build some closer alliances with top republican leaders, and today is where it starts. the countdown to this capitol hill date is on. >> we just need to get to know each other. >> reporter: house speaker paul ryan calling his meeting today with the presumptive gop nominee donald trump as more of a meet and greet. >> i don't really know him. i met him once in person in 2012.

>> reporter: aides to the speaker say don't expect a chat about specific policy, instead a focus on the big picture. >> the goal here is to unify the various wings of the party around common principles. >> reporter: ryan still hasn't said what promises he needs from trump in order to endorse him. trump, on the other hand, says he doesn't need the support from top republicans but sang his praises during an interview leading up to the sit-down. >> paul ryan, who is a very good person, by the way. >> reporter: as he looks to make peace with some members of his party, others like 2012 republican nominee mitt romney are on the attack. romney who was also reluctant to release his tax returns but eventually did so is now calling on trump to do the same slamming trump on facebook calling trump's refusal disqualifying adding there's only one logical explanation. there is a bombshell in them. >> i'm worth over $10 billion, and i don't say that bragging, folks. i'm really rich. i'll show you that in a second. >> reporter: hillary clinton also attacking the billionaire businessman on the issue. >> my husband and i have

from the covering of aircraft engine and this panel from the main section of the plane almost certainly coming from malaysia flight 370 according to the australian government. two new clues confirmed in the mysterious disappearance of the aircraft two years after it vanished from the sky on its way from koala lumpur to beijing taking its 239 people on board down with it. the pieces of debris found here in south africa and on this island off of mauritius. in all this makes five pieces of the jet recovered. just a few months ago -- >> a piece of the middle was been found about a meter long. >> reporter: -- an american tourist discovering these parts also deemed almost certainly from the plane on a beach in mozambique, and last year it was this barnacle covered wing found on france's remote reunion island. >> we want closure. we need closure. we seek and we cry for closure. >> reporter: in the search for clues grieving families still searching for closure. march 18th, 2014, the missing aircraft was deemed the longest disappearance in modern aviation

history, and despite that ongoing search, it has not been found to this day. it is believe to have crashed into the indian ocean. kendis and diane. >> all right, lauren lyster, thank you. over to iraq now where concerns about security are sky high this morning after a new wave of deadly violence. isis claimed responsibility for three separate explosions that killed at least 93 people yesterday and wounded more than 160 others. it was the deadliest day there so far this year. the attacks come amid growing concern about the political turmoil that's destabilizing iraq and undermining the fight against isis. meanwhile, fbi director james comey says the u.s. is making progress against isis recruiting. comey says nearly 800 isis-related cases are being tracked across the u.s. and that fewer americans are now traveling to enlist with the terror group. comey claimed that a couple of years ago that six to ten americans headed to the region every month. now that number is down to about one per month. federal officials say a fire that sparked the deadly blast at a texas fertilizer plant was

deliberately set. that explosion three years ago leveled the plant, damaged buildings in the town of west texas and even registered as a small earthquake. 15 people were killed, a dozen of them first responders. the atf is now offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. so far there are no suspects. three people have emerged as heroes following that deadly stabbing spree in massachusetts. the d.a. says seconds after arthur derosa crashed into a macy's store, a macy's worker tried to stop him from attacking people. then he ran to a restaurant in the mall where he stabbed a waitress. that's when restaurant patron, george heath, a teacher, tried to get the knife away. his wife describes what happened. >> i grabbed his shirt trying to hold him back. my husband grabbed him. i think he grabbed him around the waist area, i think, trying to keep him so his arm wouldn't go up to stab anybody else, and the guy pulled his hand back and stabbed him in the temple.

>> unfortunately, george heath died in that effort. the rampage finally ended when an off-duty officer killed derosa, but derosa's family members say it all could have been prevented if a mental hospital where he had gone for treatment hadn't released him that morning of the attacks. "60 minutes" correspondent morley safer is signing off after 46 years on that broadcast. the 84-year-old made the announcement yesterday saying the time has come to say good-bye. he was the longest serving correspondent at "60 minutes" joining the show in 1970. his last story aired in march. well, still ahead, a consumer alert. popular light-up shoes for toddlers catching fire. and an excessive use of force, or was it justified? overnight an investigation announced into a wild police chase and how it ended. plus, high-speed test, 0 to 400 in seconds. could this be the future of transportation?

residents near los angeles were complaining about this large flare from an exxonmobil refinery earlier this week. well, the plant had just restarted more than a year after it was damaged by an explosion. exxonmobil was fined more than $500,000 for safety violations following that explosion. also out of l.a., the lack of job opportunities for female directors in hollywood is being investigated. two federal agencies are handling this investigation. this is according to the aclu which also requested the probe. it follows a report that women comprised just 9% of all directors for the top 250 movies last year. diversity, as you know,

is a really important issue in hollywood. payless is pulling some type of light-up sneakers from its shelf after it was blamed for a fire. a texas couple says their toddler's shoes went up in flames when they left it in the suv overnight. they believe the lithium battery is to blame. the cause is not determined but payless is removed the jake runner light-up shoes out of an abundance of caution. engineers working on a way to get people from l.a. to san francisco in a half hour have taken a step forward. take a look. this was their rather brief test in the desert near las vegas. it tested a low pressure vacuum tube system that ultimately could carry passengers and cargo at more than 700 miles an hour. this test topped out at under 120 miles an hour. it was stopped in sand because they're still working on the brakes for that system. >> minor, minor detail. >> minor detail. they're going to stretch it out to three years later on this year, they hope. when we come back,

and thousands have visited the page. zimmerman shot martin as the teen returned from buying snacks. he was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter. a former south carolina police officer is now facing federal charges in the shooting death of walter scott. scott who was not armed fled after a traffic stop last year. he was shot by officer michael slager who claims it was self-defense. splaig is now accused of violating the civil rights of walter scott among other charges. his attorney says slager is, quote, carrying the burden of many past cases that were handled differently. slager is expected to stand trial on state murder charges this fall. right now, though, he's free on bail. three women were arrested after allegedly trying to smuggle 70 pounds of opium into chicago's o'hare airport. all in their 50s were heading to minnesota from japan. they found 470 packets of opium concealed in bags of tea leaves. they're worth more than $3 million. researchers say the active

[ inaudible ] >> no word on the cause of the crash. it rolled several times. the victim was awake when he was taken to the hospital. >> this morning, police are sending for gunman what killed a 25-year-old pregnant mother of four in a car to car shooting in pittsburg. 25-year-old was regulate with her 5th child. other children are under the age of six. sky 7 was over the scene at railroad avenue yesterday morning. a man with her was also shot and taken to the hospital. he is expected to survive. witnesses say the victims were having a problem with people inside of a white mercedes who opened fire on them and took off.
