>> hi, everye. i'm lizzie bermudez. welcome to "bay area life," the place where lifestyle, interests, food, and entertainment all come together. there's so much to explore. on today's show, we're enjoying the day on the beautiful monterey bay. >> lately we've been actually having a lot of really cool activity. >> then, easy steps for taking your makeup from day to night. >> all these little tips that i've given today are five minutes. and i think everyone has five minutes to make themselves look and feel the best they can. >> and tips for making extra money while cleaning out your closet. >> $200 to $250. >> oh, really? plus, mastering the perfect blowout. >> hot tip -- you want to keep the nozzle on the blow-dryer. this is gonna help you from not frizzing. >> aah! all of this fun driven by your northern california honda dealers.
4:31 pm
hey, everyone, it's time to get out of town, and what better way than heading down to the monterey bay? let's go. all i need are some tunes to make this trip complete. there are so many options. there's something for every mood. we're here with princess monterey whale watching. and we are talking to maren. she is a marine biologist. tell us about what you do here. >> oh, man. so, what i do is a lot of fun. i love my job. we go out, and we take people that are visiting monterey, whether it be locals, kids, people of all ages. we take them out whale watching,
4:32 pm
and we basically tell them a little bit about all of the wildlife in the area, whether it be otters, seals, sea lions, and then all the way up to the big blue whales, the biggest animals you can imagine out there. so it's definitely a lot of fun. >> you named some of the wildlife that you will see out there. get into a little more specifics about these different creatures that we'll see out there. >> you know, so, we could see everything from the tiniest animals, like the tiniest birds. we can go all the way up to otters, seals, sea lions, but finally the big goal of the trip is to check out the whales out there. and lately we've been actually having a lot of really cool activity. the common dolphins have been showing up pretty regularly for the last seven months. we've been seeing gray whales, 52which migrate up and down our coast every year. and the weirdo factor has been the humpback whales. they should have been long gone. a small group of them just never left. there was so much food for them here in the canyon that they've just been gorging themselves all winter long, and we've been getting a lot of early comers coming in, so it's been a lot of fun. we're one of the rare places in the world that's able to have whale watching all throughout the year, and it's because of
4:33 pm
the different seasonality between your different species of whales. so, for example, we'll get our summer feeders that come in over the summertime. they gorge, gorge, pig out in the canyon, the deep monterey submarine canyon. >> you say they -- it gets a little tricky or a little dicey. they gorge. get a -- for the common person who has never been out here, what does that mean exactly? >> so, depending on what animal you're talking about -- so, take, for example, humpback whales. they come in. they're stirring everything up. you know, we usually like to say monterey bay is like this soup bowl for all of these animals. i like to call it, like, the buffet table. they can kind of feed on a variety of things. mostly, they like smaller schooling fish. they've been feeding on anchovies for the past two years. but they can feed alongside with the blue whales on krill, which is basically a small -- kind of like a shrimp-scampi little guy in the water. they'll feed on two, two and a half tons of it per day. and what they're gonna do -- and they'll actually work together, sometimes even with sea lions -- i call them feeding frenzies. we'll find these feeding frenzies of hundreds of sea lions working together with sometimes upwards of, like, 20 humpback whales. what they're doing is kind of
4:34 pm
like circling around their food. they're corralling it into a nice, tight bait ball, and they're all kind of taking turns feeding on that. now, the gray whales -- they're not feeding here. so, they only feed up in alaska. they're pretty much just passing through the area. they're trying to migrate down to mexico, turn around, and come back. they got no time to stop and eat here. with the gray whales -- they're actually bottom feeders, so they're gonna kind of dive down to the bottom. they're gonna kind of rustle through the benthic seafloor for little critters, bugs, and all of that, amphipods, copepods, tube worms. and then you've got blue whales. now, we do see blue whales here -- not often. we don't have them for a whole heck of a long time. those guys are almost exclusive krill eaters, which is funny 'cause blue whales -- biggest animals ever to have roamed the planet, 100-foot-long, 200-ton monsters, and they're feeding on krill, which are like that big. but really it's because of how much energy they have, how much nutrients they have, and they're feeding on about eight tons of it per day.
4:35 pm
so, they're kind of like filter-feeding for packets of energy in the water. and if they're feeding on eight tons of it, that's how they grow to be these massive, larger-than-life animals. it's awesome. monterey bay is home to the third-largest submarine canyon in the whole world. it's actually about a mile or so offshore of moss landing. and it bisects our bay. so, it cuts out about 100 or 200 miles or so west. at its deepest point, it's over two miles. it's bigger than the grand canyon. so, you know, i always like to envision this huge, underwater, submarine grand canyon that splits our bay in half. it offers colder, deeper water closer to shore. and what it does is it harbors a lot of cold, nutrient-rich waters that upwells with the warmer water at the surface. so, it cycles, so you get a lot of different food supply for a lot of other marine animals -- seals, sea lions. it attracts a variety of birds all throughout the year and then, of course, some of our larger cetaceans that we see almost every day out here.
4:36 pm
>> maren, tell me why you do what you do. >> you know, i think i just love this area so much. it's such a beautiful area, and with all of the diverse marine wildlife that we have, i just love being able to share that with people. i love being able to teach kids all the neat things about the ocean, all of these neat animals that you might not always see from the shore. and i think that's my favorite thing, is getting people really excited about coming out on the water, coming out and seeing the different animals that we basically share our backyard with. >> and this is something that, you know, families and kids and adults of every age can do, right? >> yep. everyone's a kid at heart, so everyone's gonna have fun on our trips. >> coming up, learn how to take your look from day to night. >> go for the color at night. why not, you know? we're all pretty toned down in the day, so let's do a little red. it's really, really --

>> "bay area life," where lifestyle, interests, food, and entertainment all come together. ever wonder how to take your daytime look to night? maybe you've got a big event in the evening. well, makeup artist christina flach is gonna show us how to get it done -- because i know i've made the mistake of thinking nighttime means to pile on the makeup, but that's not -- >> the war paint. no, it's not war paint. it's just taking it up a couple notches to just make it a little bit more dramatic, and there's a few simple, easy steps that we can do. okay, so, we are going to take her from day to night to go out on the town. so, what we're gonna do is -- i'm gonna put a dark liner very
4:39 pm
close into her lashes. >> 'cause she had already a little bit of it on. >> she had a very soft brown on, but i'm gonna take it to a darker, chocolaty brown. i don't want to do black 'cause i think that's too harsh. with her blond hair and fair skin, i think it's just not as attractive as this will be. i am just using a dark brown chocolate eye shadow, and it's gonna be -- i'm gonna try and do a very thin line. and anytime, if you make a mistake, 'cause we all do, you can always blend it. and now i'm gonna do a little bit darker down here on the bottom. and then we're gonna add a little more mascara. and then in the crease, we are going to put a little splash of color, just for fun. so, i'm gonna put a little bit of pewter gray here in the crease, and i'm gonna blend it. i'm gonna put it on this side, as well, and we're gonna just blend it in there and give it a little bit of pizzazz. here we go on the other side. and i'm gonna keep this area here lighter because if we do it too dark on the whole lid, it's just gonna make the lid look heavy.
4:40 pm
we are gonna add a little mascara to make it look a little bit -- >> more dramatic. >> a little bit more dramatic, a little heavier, a little bit more spectacular. >> now, what color is that? and that's a gloss, too, right? >> i'm doing a gloss, and, actually, a gloss is really a great product because it gives the illusion that your lips are fuller because they're shiny. and all of us want fuller lips without having to go get them filled up. so, this is a nice way of doing it. this is called hey lover. now we're gonna just do a little bit of contouring here. so, again, i'm gonna just put a little bit of brown here, a little bronzer on both sides underneath the cheekbone, under here, under the jawline. we're gonna add a little blush, and we're gonna brush it upwards and blend them together. >> all right, so, run us through exactly what you did and how quick and easy it is to go from day to night, christina. >> okay, so, what i did was, i put a little bit of concealer under here to lighten up underneath the eye. i added liner on the top and the bottom, a little heavier on the mascara. i put a little pewter in the crease.
4:41 pm
we did a little contouring on the cheeks. we added a nice, little splash of red to her lips, and we filled in her brows -- very important -- because that, again, gives another look of sophistication and a more polished look that you want at night, that you really don't need in the day. well, i think you always do, but definitely at night you want a more polished look. >> so, overall, when you're taking your look from day to night, what would you say is the most important thing to remember? >> go for the color at night. why not, you know? we're all pretty toned down in the day, so let's do a little red. it's really, really -- it's a sexy, fun look. all these little tips that i've given today are, maximum, five minutes. and i think everyone has five minutes to make themselves look and feel the best they can. >> you look gorgeous. >> beauty. >> you ready for your big night out? >> i am. >> [ laughs ] coming up, love to shop, but short on cash? we have the perfect solution for you. you have found a way to basically make money off of your hobby, right? >> yes. and i'm happy. [ both laugh ]
4:42 pm
4:44 pm
>> welcome back to the show, everyone. i'm back in the city, and i'm about to learn an easy way to sell the clothes and shoes that i no longer wear. and the best part -- i get to make some extra cash. all right, i've got my goods. there's so much room back there, i may be doing some shopping, too. [ knock on door ] >> come in. hi! >> gwen, hi! how are you? >> aww. finally. >> okay. so, i was gonna say this must be your apartment, but i'm not sure if it's your apartment or your closet. >> my closet. [ both laugh ] >> your apartment and your closet... >> yes, both. >> ...all in one? wow. so, what do we -- what do we have here exactly? >> we have my shoes over here, some purses, and, yeah, my poshmark walk-in closet.
4:45 pm
>> talk to me a little bit about how you actually started selling on poshmark. is it 'cause you were -- you love to buy shoes? you're a shopaholic? how did that start out? >> i love shopping. i love dressing up. i love nice stuff. so i checked out poshmark, and i really like it. >> so, what do you like most? do you like the idea of being able to shop other people's closets? or do you like the ability to kind of clear out your own closet? or is a combination of both? >> a combination of both. at first, i would sell my clothes, shoes from my closet. and while selling, when -- i sell and then i have money and then i go, you know, shopping, too, at poshmark. >> i think it's pretty cool, gwen, that you can actually -- or you have found a way to basically make money off of your hobby, right? >> yes. and i'm happy. [ both laugh ] >> you're like, "and i can keep shopping." >> yes, it's true.
4:46 pm
>> are you talking, you know, $100 here and there, $1,000 monthly? what do you think you're pulling in right now from selling? >> selling -- like, oh, close to $2,000 a month. >> really? >> yeah. >> wow. so, this is your own -- actually turned into your business, right? >> yeah, mm-hmm. >> okay. i'm feeling pretty inspired now, so i want to give this at try. so i am getting a crash course from maria. >> hi. >> hello, maria from poshmark. she's gonna show me exactly how easy this is, right? >> it's super easy. it takes less than 60 seconds to get it up to speed. >> really? >> yeah. >> okay, so, the first thing i need to do is download the app on my iphone, right? >> download the app. it's also available on android if you have an android... >> okay. >> ...or for the ipad. >> okay, so, i've got my phone here, and i've got it on my apps. let's see it pop up. there is it. >> perfect. >> okay. >> so, what are we gonna sell first today? >> what are we gonna sell first? okay, so, i've got a couple dresses here, a skirt, a
4:47 pm
sweater, and then i put some shoes out. >> perfect. let's start with the shoes. >> okay. >> i noticed these gorgeous tory burch riding boots, perfect for san francisco. how much did you buy these for? >> i don't remember. they were a birthday gift! >> [ laughs ] oops. >> [ gasps ] oh, gosh, maybe i shouldn't be selling them. [ laughs ] >> it's okay. tory burch is one of our top sellers, so these will definitely sell. >> i just want to get a little money for them. >> i would suggest -- tory burch usually goes for maybe $400 to $500, retail. >> okay. >> i would suggest these are in amazing condition, barely worn. >> no, i wore them a lot, maria. >> oh. she wore them a lot. >> [ laughs ] >> um, i would suggest probably around $200 to $250. >> oh, really? oh, okay. >> is that more than you were expecting? >> yeah. >> yes? definitely. and they would sell really fast. so, pull up the app. >> okay. >> hit that little "sell" button right there. >> "sell." now i'm gonna take a picture? >> and you're gonna take a picture of the boot. >> okay, so, here might be a dumb question. is it better to put them on display?
4:48 pm
like, if i went to a shoe store, they would be out on this nice display. should i put them on? >> i think a little bit of both. it really depends what you're comfortable with. a lot of people like to see how you style the item, so putting them on and having someone take a quick picture of you -- or just put them up on display. if it's a dress or something, i would suggest putting it on simply because they can see what jewelry you wore, what jacket you can possibly wear with a dress and also how it fits. there's four different shots you can take within a listing. >> good. so now i've got three photos. >> perfect. >> and now you're gonna want to to say what you're selling, so, "tory burch riding boots." >> "tory burch riding boots." okay. >> hit "done." >> "done." >> and then describe the item. so, um, "like new," or, "great condition." >> "new riding boots." >> "riding boots."
4:49 pm
>> do i have to say black, or is that pretty obviously? >> you can say black. i think, from a description perspective, be as detailed as possible. listing price. so, you can list it for $250 and see -- it will automatically tell you how much you get back. so, if you fill in $250, your earnings when sold will be $200. the great thing about poshmark is we take 20% of every sale. so, you list it at whatever price you want. you always know what you're gonna get back if you return it, and that 20% covers customer service, shipping, credit-card fees, et cetera. so you don't have to worry about all the nitty-gritty things in between. the 20% covers the prepaid shipping label, so all you have to do is print out that label we e-mail you, box up the item, and send it off. >> that's it? >> that's it. there you go. >> oh! there they are! my boots. >> [ chuckles ] now it's out there for millions of women to buy. >> hey, batter, batter, batter, batter. do i hear $150, $170? i don't even have to do that. it's all right here. >> it's all right there. >> so, i think you covered everything, right?
4:50 pm
>> it's super easy. trust me. i'm gonna leave and i'm gonna let you take your pictures of your items and it's gonna take you less than hour to do it all. >> you're not going anywhere. i think i'm gonna make you put my clothes on and be my model, maria. sound good? >> sounds good. >> okay. thank you. >> of course. >> coming up, we're mastering the blowout -- simple steps to >> coming up, we're mastering the blowout -- simple steps to get salon-worthy hair. look, i know you're a cow and all. and you may not know what i'm talking about, but, uh. the yogurt made from your milk, is delicious. mmmm, yoplait.

so, i am going to be using the pillow proof. a little goes a long way. that's the biggest key for all products redken -- a little goes a long way. you do not want to sit here and oversaturate. oversaturation is gonna cause very oily or very just bogged-down hair. so then i'm just gonna do a little bit of the lotion. this is, like, your smoother prior to your blow-dry. so, this is our guts, and this is going to be your volumizer. some people like to lift the hair and spray it in. >> uh-huh. >> some people like to spray it in their hand, even distributed between, and then put it in. so it really just depends on what you would like to do. >> now, what happens if you put too much -- is there anything you can do to correct if you put too much product? >> i always tell people, if you do a little too much, you can take, like, a water bottle and just spray to kind of dilute it out... >> okay. >> ...and then take your towel and kind of blot your hair. so, a little trick that a lot of people do not know -- right after they put the product in,

they're straight with the blow-dryer. >> uh-huh. >> they already pin it up, and they're trying to blow-dry. take a lot of the moisture out. so, it's gonna be a little bit of a rough blow-dry. so, you're just gonna take the blow-dryer and literally -- you can flip your head over... >> mm-hmm. >> ...and just shake a lot of this moisture out because what's gonna happen is it's gonna help you, from already being so tired by the time you get to the front, you're gonna be really good to go with that. >> and what's the biggest mistake people make when they're blowing out at home? >> grabbing a bunch of hair and trying to shove it all on the brush and just going at it. and i'm like, "no, no, take your time." >> section by section? >> section by section. hot tip -- you want to keep the nozzle on the blow-dryer. this is gonna help you from not frizzing. >> aah! and i know you saw me when i was doing this. >> uh-huh. >> and you kind of -- so, you start this way, but turn.
4:55 pm
>> okay. >> so, when you turn, you can put the heat here for a little bit and then do a cool shot, let it cool for a minute. when you're coming out of it, spin. >> aah. so it's -- and the release is just as important. >> yes. so, when you do that, it automatically puts a form, so when you keep going to the next, it's holding it. >> that's setting it. >> so, let's say you just want a nice, little, sleek, sophisticated look. >> uh-huh. >> you can keep it like this. or we can do a little bit of a tease. so, quick tease trick. a lot of people think you have to do the old-school, 1950s-to-'70s, little section-by-section roller set. >> uh-huh. >> no. what i always tell people is to do, like, a triangle in the back. so, line here and then start at your peak. >> okay. >> so, when you do that, again, it doesn't have to be that perfect parting 'cause you want it to be natural. so, just nicely comb. over-elevate just a little bit. and you could take any comb.
4:56 pm
you can use a brush. it doesn't matter what's more comfortable for you. about midway... >> mm-hmm. >> ...go down -- again, just nice and subtle. here's the trick to a tease that a lot of people don't do. they think they tease it, and then they pull it back, right? take your hair and split it. >> oh. what does that do? >> this is helping divide so you're not having such a harsh, matted look right in here. >> i see. >> so, you see how it kind of branches off a little bit? >> right. >> so, when you do that and you comb... >> so the volume moves around your hair? >> exactly. >> aha. >> it gives it movement. so, another little trick to tell you -- >> uh-huh. >> you ever get to where you see a picture or you took a selfie and you're like, "oh, my gosh, i can see my scalp"? >> uh-huh. >> so, you can take a rattail comb, a pen, a makeup -- any kind of tip -- and zigzag into your part. >> oh.
4:57 pm
>> so, what's that's gonna do, you automatically -- it's not dramatic. it's not, you know -- but do you see how it gives a lift, too? >> uh-huh. i love this. oh, my gosh. perfect. love! thank you! >> yay! >> thank you. thank you. >> no problem. >> yes!
