park this morning. ready to kick off our summer concert series with ariana grande. >> they're ready to go. first, right to the brand-new developments in the mystery surrounding the disappearance of egyptair flight 804. 66 people were onboard. egyptian officials are say they have found debris they believe is from the jet. discovered by a u.s. search plane. >> we have team coverage across the globe. matt gutman starts us off from karpathos, greece. close to the debris where it was found. >> reporter: good morning. con formation just now from greek officials that an american spotter plane found what appears to be airline seats, luggage and remains of passengers. it sadly appears everybody onboard that plane 66 crew and passengers have perished. egyptian ships are collecting debris and taking it back to egypt. earlier we got a sense of what it's like out there on the

mediterranean for search and rescue teams. visibility is great. the wind is low. good flying weather but difficult to spot something from 2,000 feet. what is good about finding the debris is it narrows down the search. it was about five miles south of where radar lost contact with flight 804. that is good news. less good news is that it happened 100 miles south of here where a deep trench in the mediterranean there that goes about 10,000 feet down and it's going to be very difficult to bring up the black boxes and major pieces of the fuselage for the investigation. george. >> thank you, matt. now to the brand-new images of the pilot and co-pilot of the flight. authorities have released their names and these photos. abc's david kerley is in washington with the latest on the investigation. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning. already the debris we're hearing about is going to yield clues as investigators work to find the

wreckage. and the black boxes on the bottom of the mediterranean. we're learning more about the final moments and that crew. this morning, we know the identities of the pilots at the controls of this jet when it disappeared. egyptair confirming on flight 804, mohamed shoukair was the captain with over 6,000 flying hours. his copilot, mohamed assem had over 2,000 hours. their backgrounds and recent behavior all part of the investigation. the jetliner was on a late flight with 66 on board. from paris to cairo. as it's preparing to descend into cairo, 804 disappears from radar, minutes after talking to air traffic control. greek officials say the radar shows the jet turned left, and then strangely to the right before disappearing. with even egyptian officials believing terrorism is more likely than a technical problem, authorities are looking for clues. checking tarmac workers in paris and reviewing the jet's stops in trouble spots before the flight.

it had flown to eritrea on tuesday. and to tunisia wednesday before making the paris to cairo flight in the evening. tom hauter is a crash investigator. >> if it turns out that this is a bomb, yes, you have to look at the whole security for all the flight. where the aircraft came from. what kind of bomb was it? >> reporter: hours after the jet disappears, relatives gathering at airports, learning the grim news that no one survived. the french and the british have sent investigators to cairo. the egyptians are still running the investigation, which will be long and expensive. and some u.s. experts worry whether egypt is up to the task. >> let's get more from our aviation expert stephen ganyard. this orange box, this is key right now. >> this is key. we found some debris which this will help narrow down the search area. they can put the microphones in the water. they'll be listening for the metallic pinger powered by the battery. we have 30 days to find the boxes. >> let's run through the

theories. u.s. officials say that they didn't -- our satellites have not picked up any heat signature of a possible explosion. >> it's a little bit strange that they didn't. on the other hand, if you think of the metrojet. the russian aircraft brought down was brought down by a coke can size of explosives. it doesn't mean there would be a giant bomb. that would blow the whole airplane up. with lots of heat signature. it could be done with little explosives. >> i know you have been skeptical of the whole report that the plane swerved and circled around before it went down. you're skeptical. if it were true, would that possibly indicate a struggle in the cockpit? >> highly unlikely. i think we're looking at an airplane that came apart at altitude. perhaps the radar was seeing the pieces of the jet before it hit the water. >> thank you, steve ganyard. the charles de gaulle airport a major focus of the investigation. authorities trying to determine whether a security failure allowed a bomb to get onboard.

alex marquardt has more on that from paris. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this is one of the biggest and busiest airports in the world. the security measures in place at charles de gaulle are some of the strictest. as this deepens, there are more and more questions about a possible major security lapse. this morning, the security measures at europe's second biggest airport under intense scrutiny. after ms804 fell from the sky without warning. investigators at the charles de gaulle airport are scanning footage for possible clues. wondering if someone, something was able to slip through on to its grounds. spread over nearly 13 square miles. with more than 65 million passengers and with almost 500,000 aircraft passing through every year, could an explosive device have been hidden inside the jet by an insider? could there have been a failure in luggage inspection or screening employees? charles de gaulle uses strict european regulations.

for its security procedures like scanning passengers and recruiting staff. around 100,000 people work here. when they show up for work, they go through the same screening as passengers. since last year's paris attacks, more than 70 of the so-called red badges granting access to secure areas of this airport have been revoked or not renewed because of fears of radicalization. there are no systematic sweeps of planes when they arrive here. ms804 only spent 90 minutes on the tarmac after arriving from tunisia. egyptair and the airport tell us there was no special sweep on the flight. the cleaning crews that go through every plane, every hold, are specially trained to be looking out for weapons and explosives. >> we turn to abc chief investigative correspondent brian ross for the latest. >> reporter: good morning. adding to the mystery is the so far lack of claim of

responsibility from isis or al qaeda. two terror groups that have never been shy about taking credit for deadly attacks. so far, nothing on their usual internet outlets. >> not just the airport in paris. how about the other stops it made before getting there? >> reporter: that's a good question. officials are asking why if terrorists somehow did smuggle a bomb past security at charles de gaulle airport, it was placed on half empty red eye flight? instead of the other flights leaving for european capitals or the u.s. that puts a focus on egyptair and that particular aircraft. prior to arriving in paris, it made stops in tunisia and eritrea. in northern africa. two countries with bad airport security. now a sharp focus on who had access to that plane in paris and africa. >> the fact they didn't do a security sweep. >> very surprising and disappointing. >> of course we have heightened security concerns at home as well as passengers face those

extremely long lines from the tsa crisis, abc's mary bruce is at newark airport with the latest. good morning, mary. >> reporter: hi, george, good morning. those long lines are forming here. travelers are asking, could it happen here? some individual airports like los angeles international are beefing up their security. this morning, the tsa says it's not making changes. the agency is already operating at an all-time high. increasing screening of passengers with carry-on luggage following an embarrassing breakdown last year. when agents failed to detect mock explosives, banned items 95% of the time. the tsa implemented more manual screenings but they're also dealing with more travelers and fewer agents, which has led to this. >> this is a nightmare. >> we missed our flight. we're told there's nothing they can do. >> arrive earlier. expect long lines. >> reporter: massive lines and huge delays.

the concern, is flying about to become even more difficult? and that is the big question that travelers here are asking this morning. the tsa says they have to walk a fine line. they want to get the lines moving. their top priority is keeping everyone safe. george and robin? >> people have to stay calm this weekend as they travel. thank you, mary. now the race for the white house. hillary clinton saying she'll be the nominee, while slamming donald trump, calling him not qualified to be president. as she climbs back to the top in a new national poll. tom llamas is here with the latest. >> reporter: donald trump and hillary clinton in a back and forth still going on this morning. trump just tweeting that isis wants hillary to be president. overnight, donald trump taking a short trip across the river and feeling right at home in new jersey. >> there's nothing like new jersey. oh, wise guys. so many wise guys. >> reporter: raising money with

a combat veteran making to it the top of mt. everest. making history. his incredible story in just a bit. the latest on the mysterious disappearance of flight 804. let's go back to matt gutman near where the debris was found. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, george. new information rolling in. the greeks are saying a possible debris field was found. they believe an airline seat, luggage and remains of a passenger were also found. a satellite image from the european space agency found an oil slick near that area that helps narrow down the search and now believed that all 66 passengers and crew have perished. the bad news is that this is about 100 miles south of here along a very deep area of the mediterranean and it's going to be very difficult to bring up pieces of the fuselage and the black box that will yield the critical clues, george, robin.

>> thank you, matt. now to the scary moment at sea. a scuba diver stranded in the water. surrounded by sharks. the whole encounter captured on his gopro camera. mara schiavocampo is here with more. >> that video is unbelievable. the man says he's been diving for 35 years and has never seen anything like this. surfacing to find that his boat had drifted three miles away. lost at sea. and all alone. this morning, 68-year-old florida diver randy fales sharing his harrowing story of a scuba trip gone wrong. all caught on his gopro camera. surfacing from a 30-minute dive sunday, stranded in 90 feet of water. 17 miles offshore. >> came up at the end of the dive. looked around. and no boat. >> reporter: within minutes, some unwanted company. watch as fales uses his spear to keep the eight-foot shark at bay. >> first shark showed up and

started swimming around me and swimming towards me. then he -- swam by me and hit me with one of his pectoral fins. >> reporter: the real-life drama like a scene from the 2003 thriller, "open water." >> oh! >> reporter: one hour after fales surfaced, a second visitor. >> he started swimming around me, in circles. swimming close. >> reporter: still, he kept his cool, blowing a whistle. using his neon yellow dive bag to signal for help. unable to find him, fales' family, on the boat, alerted the coast guard. >> i was desperate. i didn't know what to do. >> reporter: finally, after 90 exhausting minutes, a fishing boat just happened to find fales. a happy ending to one man's terrifying fish tale. >> when they got near me, i said, boy, am i glad to see you. >> reporter: you bet. that video gives me chills. despite all of that drama, fales says he plans to go back to

diving as soon as he can. his daughters say they plan to buy him a gps locator for father's day. that's a really smart gift. this guy is so cool under pressure. he says, i liked seeing the sharks that close up. he has a different perspective than rest of us. >> she sure does. >> he did all the right things. blowing the whistle and having the -- >> he did everything right. he said his biggest concern was cramping. after swimming that long he would cramp. >> he kept the camera rolling the whole time. >> he should work in news. you roll no matter what. an abc news exclusive. diane sawyer, inside rikers island. the large 'single jail complex in the country. 80% of prisoners are awaiting trial. the new jail commissioner has a radical plan to change the history of violence. >> reporter: over 415 acres, the sprawling humanity of rikers island. out of sight, often out of mind. officers. inmates. some of them kids who have walked in the door for the first time.

had you been away from home before this? >> no, this is the longest i have ever been away from my mom. >> reporter: 17-year-old franklin. his father left when he was a baby. he's a child of the sprawling housing projects. the poverty. the gangs. the drugs. >> i don't want to live in the projects forever. i want to move somewhere far. someplace that nobody plans on going. >> reporter: like more than half the inmates, he's been held for a nonviolent crime, most of them involving possession and selling of drugs. what was the crossroads that got you here? >> like you said, one way, then go another way. i just went the opposite way of the good way. >> reporter: but franklin loved school. he's written a letter to the judge hoping for another chance. you write here, i'm a nobody. learn from my mistakes. there's a lot i look forward to in the future. give me someone to talk to if i feel myself thinking negative thoughts.

in the past, videos show -- that even nonviolent kids can be forced to survive a violent population. which brings us to the new man in charge at rikers. a man who says he's come to change this notorious place. starting with solitary. commissioner joseph ponte says there's no evidence this kind of treatment reduces violence. and says remember, 80% of the inmates at rikers will eventually be back out on the streets. he wants everyone here to work for a different result. >> we can change people's lives. if you don't believe that, then you have to say that these are throwaway people. so they're throwaways. they're violent when they come in, they'll be violent when they come out. they'll be the next criminal to do 50 years for the next assault. because they're getting out. they're going to be your neighbor. >> reporter: ponte is drastically reducing the use of solitary confinement. perhaps his most radical idea, something that would be the first in the country. get rid of solitary completely for the most potentially violent

population in the jail, 18 to 21-year-olds who are, by the numbers, the most difficult group to control. hasn't it been a third of the violence. >> a third of the violence. >> reporter: doesn't that give you pause getting rid -- >> it's not easy. these are difficult and dangerous people that we're dealing with. i'm not saying this is an easy task. but it's a much better hopeful outcome than what we were doing. >> you have never been shaken in that belief? >> i haven't. >> you'll see a lot more on the special report and see how the commissioner's new plan is being received. watching "nightline" tonight. coming up, the golden boy of golf, phil mickelson, in trouble. how did he make almost $1 million in a week on a stock tip? and a "grey's anatomy" bombshell. which fan favorite bid good-bye? we have what she's saying about it this morning.

>> i'm phil mickelson, pro golfer. >> reporter: the s.e.c. looking into how the successful pitchman made an almost $1 million profit from stock in nearly one day. >> simply put, mickelson made money that wasn't his to make. when you make money that you're not entitled to, you should not get to keep it. we have not charged him with insider trading. >> reporter: it all stems from a stock tip he received in 2012 from friend and noted gambler billy walters. walters allegedly telling mickelson to invest in dean foods. the problem? walters' tip was allegedly the result of inside information he received from thomas davis, the now former chairman of dean foods. mickelson has agreed to pay back the full amount with interest. mickelson reps telling abc news overnight he feels vindicated but takes full responsibility for the decision and associations that led him to becoming part of this investigation.

we're back now with an epic feat. an american hero becoming the first ever combat amputee to reach the top of mt. everest. a team of soldiers and veterans close behind. all part of a mission to inspire and help their fellow vets. this morning, marine corps staff sergeant charlie linville is the first ever combat amputee to reach the summit. all 29,000 feet of mt. everest. not far behind, retired staff sergeant chad jukes. who also lost his right leg to an ied explosion in iraq.

jukes' team of american soldiers just four days away from reaching everest's summit. from 20,000 feet speaking exclusively with abc via satellite phone. >> we're feeling good. feeling strong. >> reporter: the vets are among the first wave of climbers taking on everest since the earthquake rocked nepal last spring. the climbers battling 60-mile-an-hour winds and drastic temperature changes. to pay tribute to their fallen colleagues. >> i have a picture of pfc keith williams and staff sergeant benjamin crane. i'm bringing them to the summit for their families. >> reporter: also to bring an awareness with veteran mental health, with an estimated 22 u.s. vets committing suicide every day. staff sergeant juke says he struggled with ptsd after his amputation. >> i have found great satisfaction, great happiness in getting into the outdoors. and i think that a lot of people can share in that healing power. >> i mean, it's truly remarkable.

in the mediterranean sea. 66 people were on the flight. authorities believed crashed in 10,000 feet of water. finding the debris will help narrow the search for the black boxes. matt gutman is nearby on the greek island of karpathos. matt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. new information coming in from greek defense officials that a u.s. plane found what appears to be an airline seat, luggage. and the remains of passengers. it's believed everybody aboard flight 804, 66 passengers and crew have perished. but at least finding that debris helps rescuers and searchers narrow down the search. you can maybe hear what appears to be a search helicopter buzzing. the search continues. the problem is that the plane apparently went down in a very deep area of the relatively shallow mediterranean sea. about 10,000 feet. getting to the black boxes. the parts of the fuselage that could tell us what happened could be difficult. amy?

>> thank you, matt. adding to the mystery is the lack of any claim of responsibility from terror groups like isis or al qaeda. also u.s. officials say satellites did not pick up any heat signature from an explosion. though that doesn't rule out anything. meanwhile, some airports already beefing up on security. one concern is airport workers' access to cargo areas and the fact that the egyptair plane arrived in paris from two countries in north africa notorious for weak security. to politics now. the democratic national committee reportedly planning to extend an olive branch to bernie sanders. the washington post reports that they'll offer sanders a key policymaking decision this summer at the convention. that may not be enough to placate him, especially now that hillary clinton has essentially declared the race over. saying there's no way i won't be the nominee. clinton also slammed donald trump saying he is not qualified to be president. trump fired back. saying for her to be able to run is an absolute disgrace to this country.
