it took almost two hours to it took almost two hours to free driver of a truck from its cab. the semi had hit the base of a large highway sign so hard, that the sign supports pushed into the cab. the driver had swerved to avoid a collision on the highway and then ran off the road. he's now being called a hero. luckily the oil tanker was empty at the time and no one else was injured. >> and this vehicle was a lot smaller but a golf cart actually caused a giant problem from one family vacationing in north carolina. >> it was a mother. she found herself behind bars after allowing her 11-year-old son to drive a golf cart. abc's ryan smith has it the story. >> what is this guy doing? >> placing her under arrest is what he's doing. >> reporter: when julie mall was stopped by police on posh bald head island, she told "the charlotte observer" this was the last thing she expected. >> and then he pushes me down into the ground, puts his knee on my back. >> reporter: why? she let her underage son drive a

good morning. i'm phillip mena in for kendis gibson. good morning. i'm phillip mena in for kendis gibson. >> i'm diane macedo with some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." president obama spoke to the vietnamese people during a visit today. he wants to the stress constructive dialogue even when two nations disagree. we have a full report ahead. >> tragedy on the island of kauai after a sky diving plane crashed and burned. all five people on board died in the crash. >> the head of intelligence for the tsa is out. part a shake-up at the agency. also new management at chicago's o'hare airport where wait for security lines have been so long, people have missed their flights. a missing boston college senior has been found safe. her family reported her missing

after she didn't show up for her graduation. police say she's medically fine but will be evaluated. those are some of our top stories on this tuesday, may 24th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this half hour with president obama's visit to vietnam. >> he just held a meeting in hanoi with activists and entrepreneurs to discuss closer ties with the vietnamese people. abc's arlette saenz joins with us the latest. >> reporter: president obama sent a message to the government in vietnam, improve human rights. >> i believe nations are more successful when universal rights are upheld. >> reporter: the president made his case to thousands in hanoi saying the country would prosper if it embraced freedom of expression, speech and assembly. president obama also relayed this message in a meeting with members of civil society but he said some activists were barred from attending.

>> there are still folks who find it very difficult to assemble and organize peacefully around issues that they care deeply about. >> reporter: sitting right next to the president, singer songwriter mai khoi, known as the lady gaga of vietnam. ♪ >> reporter: she attempted to run in last weekend's national assembly elections but was blocked from the ballot. khoi told abc's bob woodruff she turns to music as a form of political activism. >> i use music to infuse people to raise the awareness about democracy and human rights and i wrote about what will we want to change to improve the democracy and human rights in vietnam. >> reporter: president obama now heads to ho chi minh city. vietnam's bustling urban center. president obama's first stop in ho chi minh city will be the jade pagoda, one of the most revered temples.

it's already closed just hours before he visits. the president may squeeze in some time to sample vietnamese fare like he did last night with the celebrity chef anthony bourdain. the leader of the free world seen sitting on a blue stool drinking beer's dined on a traditional vietnamese dish of pork and noodles. the total cost for the meal for two, $6. bourdain picked up the check. president obama will meet with young entrepreneurs here today, part of his push to promote the transpacific partnership deal. he will continue discussions on trade when he heads to japan tomorrow for the g7 summit. arlette saenz. >> back here at home, bernie sanders is not letting up on hillary clinton saying she's backing out of a final debate. sanders told thousands of supporters in santa monica last night clinton's decision not to debate him again is insulting to the people of california. sanders said he's going to win

the state and march to the convention with a lot of momentum. keep in mind earlier he also said the convention could be messy but he has promised to condemn any violence. clinton is reserving her attacks for donald trump. she blasted trump's business skills and warned that he could bankrupt the country like he did his companies. she also called his economics a recipe for lower wages, fewer jobs and more debt. but trump continued to slam bill clinton. he posted a new video using audio from two women who accused the former president of sexual assault. >> now to the search for answers in the crash of egyptair flight 804. >> teams are working a nearly 5300 square mile area in the mediterranean. molly joins us from cairo. >> reporter: that's right. 5300 square miles just about the size of connecticut and that area will likely continue to expand until they found those black boxes. a french navy ship has now arrived at the search area. again, it's a sonar equipped

ship and can detect pings from the black boxes. the battery only lasts about three weeks. the debris field that the egyptians and u.s. navy continue to come across may now be miles from that crash site and from where those black boxes are resting. as the investigation committee moves forward here in cairo, key to this investigation will be the airline company. airbus. they have a representative here in cairo supporting the investigation and egypt has requested all data from the french and greeks they want all audio, video data from when the plane was at charles de gaulle airport in paris and in greek air space. the egyptians want to be the ones to release the data. there's nervousness here with the french investigation body so involved and that french navy ship out on the water, that the french may get information faster and the agendas are competing french really hoping the results don't show any misconduct at the airport in the

capital charles de gaulle, while the egyptians desperate to show this wasn't the fault of their aircraft. back in cairo, as human remains arrive here, dna testing has begun to identify those remains. at the morgue downtown in cairo, families will start arriving to also get tested for dna. last night a memorial service for members of the crew attended by president sisi and even without those human remains identified, families still holding memorial services to honor their loved ones. >> we heard from greek's defense minister that the plane swerved and lost 10,000 feet. the egyptians are disputing that. any more clarity there. >> reporter: that's right. if there was, this could provide clues that the pilots lost control or they were incapacitated. an egyptian official tells abc news says that is not correct. the plane was flying normally, no swerving and he urged the

greeks to line up behind it the lead investigation country the egyptians. different countries putting forward rumors, that's exactly why the egyptians demanded all of that data so they won't be caught off guard. >> has to make it so hard on families. molly hunter live for us in cairo. thank you. and in iraq, the battle for fallujah raging on with the prime minister hailing big successes against isis. troops recaptured some agricultural areas along the northeastern edge of fallujah under intensified iraqi air strikes. u.s.-led coalition carried out two air strikes in support that have operation. isis is claiming responsibility for a series of bomb blasts in the syrian coastal cities but the government is blaming other middle eastern countries. it says the attacks were efforts by turkey, qatar, and saudi arabia to derail the peace talks in the five-year civil war. dozens of people were killed in the explosions. till now, the cities had been fairly safe. one of the police officers

accused in the death of freddie gray was acquitted. a judge ruled edward nero played little role in the case. there were no riots after his acquittal. but many in the african-american community are unhappy with the verdict. five other officers still face charges. a week of severe storms in the central plains. heavy rain flooded many streets in wichita with many cars stalled in high water. some people drove around barriers to drive through standing water and then were surprised when they got stuck. and it looks like a winter wonderland. this is central pennsylvania in late may. there's so much hail it, fell so quickly that it coated the ground with a layer of ice and slush. it melted away quickly but not before clogging storm drains. that created minor flooding, as well about the violent storms today extend all the way from north texas up to the great lakes. >> there will also be rain and snow in the western mountains and some showers in the

video shows one of the robbers video shows one of the robbers spray one of those robbers is separate workers at the verizon store with mace, then led employees to the back of the store and duct taped their hands police say they made off with about $30,000 worth of cell phones and other devices. george zimmerman claims he's getting a quarter million dollars for the gun he used to kill trayvon martin. he said a previous bid for $150,000 fell through. he then accepted the bid from an anonymous buyer. zimmerman said he wants to use some of the money to fight hillary clinton's anti-gun proposals and violence against police specifically from black lives matter. a new development in bill cosby's criminal sex assault case. the comedian failed an attempt to delay a key hearing. >> he is expected back in court today after the pennsylvania supreme court refused to grant that delay. abc's linsey davis has the latest. >> reporter: bill cosby is preparing to go back to court. this, after his hail mary attempt to delay was denied.

for the first time in years, the embattled comedian may be confronted face-to-face by one of his accusers, andrea constand. a judge will decide if there is enough evidence to put cosby on trial for sexual assault allegations, stemming from a 2004 encounter with the former temple university employee at his home in pennsylvania. prosecutors are likely to introduce evidence that allege cosby gave constand three blue pills and wine, which they say made her unable to consent to sexual contact. cosby, however, has maintained all along that the encounter was consensual. a 2005 deposition for the constand case reveals a cavalier cosby. when asked a graphic question about a sexual encounter with another woman, a young model, and the manner in which she pleased him, the comedian answered, "bingo." this case, brought last december, was an 11th hour decision by the prosecutor's office, just days before the statute of limitations was set to run out. linsey davis, abc news, new

five people were killed when a sky diving plane crashed and burned just after takeoff on the island of kauai. it's believed the pilot, two instructors and two jumpers were on board at the time. and another small plane crash in hawaii. this one off of honolulu. the aircraft was approaching the airport when it crash landed into the water. two lifeguards swam out to help the passengers on board and then a jet ski rescued all four. underwater images show the small plane right where it crash landed in the water. a plane that had just taken off from the denver airport was forced to return after a bird strike. abc's kayna whitworth has the details. >> reporter: the terrifying emergency landing playing out just moments after takeoff. the virgin america flight taking off just before noon, headed from denver to san francisco. 122 passengers and five crew onboard. the pilot radioing for help, declaring an emergency. the airbus 320 suffering a bird strike, according to denver international airport.
