calm, your internet's on. >> announcer: live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good afternoon and thank you for join us today. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm lar are biel. a really gruesome discovery near the bay bridge. a torso was found at the end of burma road at the near the foot of the bridge. eric thomas live now with the details. >> reporter: larry, gruesome indeed, enough to shake anyone, the discovery made just after noon today on the rocks on the oakland side of the bay just a few dozen yards south ever the old bay bridge which is being demolished. police say a contractor on his lunch break was taking pictures of the bridge and the bay when he looked down and he saw that partially clothed tors soy. he called 911 and soon oakland police officers were crawling all over the area looking for clues. they don't know the identity or

even the race of the victim at this point, but the medical examiner was able to figure out a few things. >> right now the coroner believes that there's no trauma to the body, that this may have been just an accident, but always very difficult to say. we're not going to rule anything out. we'll look at everything. what we are looking at is a young male. we don't know the race at this time because the torso is so decompo decomposed. they do believe it's many been in the water for at least a month, maybe a little longer. we do not expect it to have any impact with regard to the bringing down of the old bay bridge. that process will continue from this point forward. it will not have any impact on the traffic or otherwise. >> reporter: the man who made the discovery did not work for caltrans, but they were out herd aszv precaution andu! because is so close to their demolition project. now, with finger prints and dental records ruled out because this is only a torso, police will need dna to identify the

remains. police will be checking missing 53-year-old shoemake turned himself in to richmond police today. police have been looking for him since sunday aets fate fal fire. his 5-year-old son died in the blaze. the boy's mother did survive, but she is severely burned. a five-alarm fire burned for hours in the south bay. >> this is a look at the scene in santa clara from sky7 hd. you can see the damage there. abc 7 news was first on the story and you can tell from our video, look at the size of this thing. this was a massive fire that destroyed a number of businesses. >> it happened on el camino

royale near lawrence expressway. wayne freedman is there live with the latest. wayne? >> reporter: well, it's the rancho shopping center and behind me what one business owner described as remnants of the american dream, all small businesses,ç businesses that people bought, built up, workeì% hard on,q eight small businesse all burned this morning. it was an early morning five-alarm fire that lit up the sky and burnedor for hours a blaze that appears to have begun in the front of the rancho shopping center and then worked its way back through one small business after another. vern na owned a jewelry store, had been here for 35 years. minute by minute, hour after hour, of rating. this is how it was for business owners through most of the day. yellow tape kept them back. >> i'm dying to get in. >> reporter: they tell you can't go in because? >> it's not safe. >> reporter: donna ma ruk ka owns a dance studio on the

the fire. a 21-year-old man was shot to death in antioch in morning. police responded to report of a shooting near crater peak way and black diamond drive around 10:30 this morning. the victim is a richmond rez debit. his name was not yet been released. the chp is investigating another freeway shooting in the east bay. a man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg as he drove on 80 in hercules. police say the man's red sedan was hit multiple times last night. a second car had its window shattered. no one was hurt in that car. there have been around 20 shootings on east bay freeways in the past year. coming up at fave, local mayors team up to find a solution to the shooting. a northern california family is desperate for answers right now. a man and his little girl were last seen in antioch, but that was three days ago. thf they're worried they may have gotten into an accident somewhere along 160 on the way home to sacramento. abc serve news reporter janet oh

has the latest. >> reporter: 23-year-old kyler jack on and his 1-year-old daughter kaley left antioch 11:00 p.m. sound night. they were on the way home to sacramento but never made it. now kaley's mom jay own na mason is asking what happened as she frantically waits for answers. she says it's unlike kyler to go completely silent. no one has been able to reach him by phone or social media. >> he protects my baby. he protects the kids like he would never, ever like -- he would never let nobody do anything to my kids like he won't. even the kids that's not his. >> reporter: jay own na says kyler was driving his silver ford taurus with california license plate 4wv 944. she said kyler always takes highway 160 to get home and is pleading with the police to check the toll bridge records to see if he passed through. the family fears he may have been tired and could have driven

a declaration and a set of questions, right? so it's both black lives matter period. but then also a question, do black lives matter? right? and then if black lives matter, what would be different? how might the world look different if look lives matter? >> reporter: this is the 13th san francisco public defenders justice summit but this year's strikes a chord because of its focus on the police department's use of force policy. >> we've had three shootings in san francisco in the last six months all people of color. and what we're going to show today is that these shoots were preventable and avoidable but you need to have both a change of policy as well as practice. >> the most recent shooting happened last week when police shot and killed 2 niep-year-old swres ka williams. police say it appears she wasn't armed. killings like this motivated vanessa jackson to come to today's summit. >> i'm hoping change is headed you our way. but if not, you know, the people are going to have to come to the street and make a change. >> reporter: these aren't the policy changers in this room.

jeff adachi thinks their voice and others can influence change. >> there's going to be hearings around body cams ra and use of force and citizens should come out and take an interest or write a letter. it's very important that people become engaged in the criminal justice system if they want to see change. >> reporter: the city's police commission has been debating the department's use of force policy and will continue the discussion next month. and the city's interim police chief says changing the policy is his first priority. in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. a frightening moment inside a game stop store. this was in silver spring, maryland two armed men in hoodies entered the store last friday and watch as one of the robbers manhandles that little boy, draggeded him right out of the bay. if you look again, the boy was actually trying to throw a punch at the robber. police say the two men ordered two clerks to the floor and then got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and some personal property. those two are still at large. those who are in the store are okay and that boy is okay.

down they-1 to oklahoma city. okc looks like a buzz saw right now. warriors are reeling after getting crushed in the last two da games in ockc. abc 7 news was at the warriors workout facility. steve kerr says the rest of the team was recovering physically and we hope mentally as well. kerr dismissed reports that steph curry's injuries only had him playing at 70%. >> is he bothered a little bit? perhaps by the layoff. i mean, he went three weeks out basically playing a game. so he just may not be quite where he needs to be. but it's not an injury. >> if you look back at history, only 4% of the teams have overcome a 3-1 deficit, but it did happen in last year's playoffs so there's a positive there. kerr said he didn't think any of those team that's came back were -- failed could come back were defending champs with possibly two more games at home. you consider so take care of

there were 284 competitors to start. the youngest a 6-year-old from texas who competed in his first bee in diapers. now, if you notice, more wrong answers this year because scripps changed the rules to make the bee tougher after the competition ended in a tie for two straight years. so now only 50 spellers are left, sadly the 6-year-old did not make it. the final rounds begin tomorrow. you can watch and cheer on the san jose two on our sister network espn. larry and ama? >> best of luck. thank you kristen. two popular vantage points at the golden gate bridge will be off limits this weekend because of congestion concerns. private cars will not be allowed to park at the welcome center in san francisco or at vista point on the marin side. taxi and ride services will only -- ride share services will only be allowed to drop off paenszs at vista point. that closure runs 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. friday through memorial day. a section of beach in the point reyes national sea shore

and it moves up to full force high gear over the weekend. it will be much warmer over this memorial weekend holiday weekend. let's take a look at wins right now, though. pretty gusty 32 miles per hour at sfo, 28 at san carlos, 25 at can cord. you can see that the strongest gufrlts are near the coast and near the delta. low temperatures tonight under partly cloudy conditions will be be mainly in the low to mid-sfwis. though low clouds will hang around for a while. here's some animation starting 7:00 tomorrow morning. notice for the morning commute tomorrow they'll be reduced visibility in some spots because of the presence of low clouds but they'll start to move out towards the coast rather quickly by 8:00 tomorrow morning. we'll see some clearing up in the north r north and in the east and then by about 11:00 norm morning as we approach the midday hour we'll see most of the low clouds and fog near the coastline with sunny skies over most inland and bay side areas and that pattern will continue into the afternoon hours as we start and the evening as we begin to warm up a bit. highs tomorrow will be generally in the low 60s near the coast

upper 60s and low 70s around the bay and ummer 70s to near 80 inland but check out the warming that takes place over the weekend let's start with saturday we'll see highs in the mid to upper 60s even some 70s on the coast around the bay some low 80 dz and up to and above 90 degrees inland. how about sunday pretty much the same maybe a degree or two lower in some spots but still looking at maybe a high of 92 at antioch and high of 90 at cloverdale and monday memorial day back to the low to mid 90s inland low 80s in some bay shore locations mid60s to low 70s on the coast here's the accuweather seven day forecast. that warm upgoing to last for a while with no real cooldown in sight until about wednesday of next week so we've got four very warm almost summer like days coming our way carrying us through the holiday weekend which means great beach weather for those who like the coastline larry and ama? >> spencer, hang on to the rail. up next, the woman known as chewbacca mom goes on the ride of a lifetime.

a florida judge has denied gawker's motion for a new trial in the hulk hogan sex video case. the court also will not reduce a $140 million jury verdict that hogan won in march. hogan sued gawker after it posted the wrestler of having sex with his then best friend's

"world news tonight" tweeted that 11 states are now suing the obama add minute sfraigs over transgender bathrooms. this follows a directive to schools this month to let transgender students use bathrooms that match their gender identity. the lawsuit claims the order is unconstitutional. in the race for the white house, hillary clinton making a campaign stop today in salinass. abc 7 news reporter david louie is there. david, she just finished. >> reporter: this is not the first time hillary clinton has been to salinas. she was here eight years ago when they was last running to frez. she came to hartnell college gain where she was greeted by several thousand people more than filling the 800 capacity gym. many of the people turning out today were latino or they were farm workers like sylvia hort ta who continue to worry about what will happen with immigration reform under the next occupant

on june 7th. >> i am kind of leaning toward bernie sanders actually because i. young and he speaks to the people that are young like me going to college who have a little bit of debt. so i want to see if she touches base on that today and if i should change my opinion. >> reporter: this was clinton's second california stop today. she started this morning in southern california, now that she's finished here she's heading now to atherton to a private residence for a fund-raising event. we're live in salinas, david louie, abc 7 news. the state department inspector general's report on clinton's use of a private e-mail server is out. the audit says clinton failed to follow the rules or inform key department staff regardingor her use of a private server. but it also acknowledges personal e-mail use by previous secretaries. a clinton sfoeksperson says the report shows clinton's actions were consistent with those of her press of predecessors. however, oenltds argue they shouldn't want truthful. senator bernie sanders is also in california this afternoon sanders spoke to his

next tuesday. voters go to the polls here in california on tuesday june schaechth. president obama assured japan's prime minister said the u.s. will fully cooperate into the investigation of the murder of a japanese woman allegedly by a former u.s. marine. mr. obama arrived in japan today and met with prime minister shin zoe abe who expressed strong indignation about the arrest of the 32-year-old. the president says he's appalled by any violent qaim that may have occurred or committed by any u.s. personnel or contractor. >> we consider it inexcusable, and we are committed to doing everything that we can to prevent any crimes from taking place of this sort. >> police in japan arrested the man after investigators found the body of a missing 20-year-old woman at a location that he provided. a suspected gunman is now in custody after a shooting spree on a phoenix area highway overnight. two people were injured when the shooter opened fire on passing

the white house today hosted a talent show showkaying the power of the arts. ♪ students from california to new york sang danced and played music. the white house provided us with this video. the performers are students that turn around arts a program that uses art education to improve struggling schools. at today's talent show the first lady announced the tusharound arts program would expand to 68 schools nationwide. the beasts have invaded the exploratorium. those are strand beests which is dutch for beach animals. the artist calls them a new form of life which go from being extinct from reanimated in seconds. he demonstrated them today. >> this is an extinct animal called -- and i will at this

>> announcer: fremont. palo alto. norm bay and all the bay area. this is abc 7 news. the city of vallejo is excited this afternoon about potentially hundreds of new jobs on mare island. electric car start-up faraday future wants to build a factory there and vallejo has been trying to redevelop the base since it closed in 1996. faraday says its goal is to build the next generation of electric cars. the southern california based company was formed two years ago and so far has shown only a concept car in public. >> we're thrilled to start this partnership with faraday future. we've been working with them through the last 18 months to this point where we are now going to enter into official ne goekss with them. >> if vallejo and faraday reach an agreement to develop the sooist it would also include a customer experience center where people could test-drive cars and

video doorbells are a hot knew hu high security device. they've already recorded suspected burglars, one even captured a curious bear but how well do they really work. lindsay janice investigates. >> reporter: you've probably seen the ads. >> i invented rings you can see and speak to whoever is at your home from your smartphone. >> reporter: so how well do video doorbells work? gma investigates trying out two, ring and its main competitor sky bell. both work by an app on your phone and both have motion detectors that trigger the camera to record movement. and send you an alert even if someone doesn't actually ring the bell. >> i like there's motion at my front door. >> reporter: first, how well do they allow us to communicate? we arrange for two package deliveries for each video doorbe doorbell. >> hi there. >> making a delivery. >> reporter: using ring i could talk to the deliveriperson both times, even though i was in my

office far away. the same with sky bell. we used the hd version. no problem. but could these video doorbells really help identify a package thief? we asked staffers to take the packages. we also installed traditional surveillance cameras to compare the video. first up, ring. it notified us both times but when our pretend thief moved quickly we only got a side view of his face. for sky bell our first pretend thief as seen on our surveillance cameras is very fast. there was no alert and no video recording from sky bell. our second pretend thief is slower we do get an alert but the recording only captures the side of her face and her back making it hard to identify her. we showed the video to criminal investigator glen bard. >> i would want to have it so they could catch her as she's walking up. >> reporter: but check it out. when it came to night vision, both doorbells outperformed our
