some overachievers, those young men. >> that's right. good friday morning to everyone. apologies for my voice. >> oh, you sound great. so we begin with the memorial day weekend getting off to kind of a nasty start for millions of americans with severe storms marked by rain, wind, hail and flooding, and it's not over yet. >> yeah, the radar really shows what's happening. those same dismal conditions will extend from the gulf coast to the great lakes and central texas has already taken an especially hard hit. a tornado ripped through bryan college station leaving residential areas in tatters. the storm also brought enough rain to cause widespread flooding that shut down major roadways and swamped city streets. >> in kansas city it was dark and gloomy over kauffman stadium. not exactly ideal conditions for the baseball game between the royals and the white sox. that game was postponed but not for a lack of optimism from some fans who stuck it out with that tiny hope they might see some action. in the meantime, the scene in denver, it looked more like

the middle of winter. hail was piled so high in some areas, it looked like snow. several tornadoes also were reported throughout colorado causing major property damage and knocking down power poles. and you may recall that monster tornado that we showed you at this time yesterday, well, that touched down just a mile outside of solomon, kansas. the national weather service now says it was an ef-4 on the scale of tornado strength. it was packing winds of 180 miles an hour and measured half a mile across. >> and for millions of americans, the stormy weather is not over yet. >> and others can add sweltering temperatures to the mix for the holiday weekend. accuweather's justin povick joins us now with the forecast. good morning. >> diane, kendis, thanks. good morning to you, as well on this friday. we are concerned about more severe weather over many of the same areas that have had it all week long. >> damaging wind, large hail and tornadoes all possible through southern nebraska through the gulf coast. the northeast is summerlike.

well into the 80s it will feel like and we'll take that to the bank all the way into memorial day with the warmth. there could be a couple of thunderstorms at that point. diane, kendis, back to you. >> all right, justin, thank you. and one more note on the fallout from all of this stormy weather. a group of geology students from clemson university were touring hidden river cave in kentucky when pouring rain triggered a flash flood. well, the tourists spent more than six hours then trapped inside the cave sometimes in neck deep water. eventually they managed to make their way to safety. overseas now where president obama is wrapping up his trip to japan with a high-profile visit to hiroshima. this morning the president laid a wreath at the city's peace memorial. he becomes the first sitting u.s. president to visit hiroshima where 140,000 people were killed by an atomic bomb in the closing days of world war ii. >> the flash of light and a wall of fire destroyed a city and

demonstrated that mankind possessed the means to destroy itself. >> as expected the president did not apologize for the u.s. dropping the bomb. he did say the world has a responsibility to ask how to prevent such suffering from happening again. and also in japan, breaking news from tokyo where the engine of a korean airplane has caught on fire just before takeoff. you can see firefighters spraying some foam on that aircraft. all 302 passengers and 17 crew members were safely evacuated. flight 2708 was heading to seoul, south korea. the runway the plane was using had been closed and all other flights temporarily halted. that is at the city airport there in tokyo. now to the race for the white house and a big step forward for donald trump. >> yep, trump has now secured enough delegates to lock up the republican nomination. he laid out what was an aggressive energy policy and

launched a new round of attacks against hillary clinton. we get the latest right now from abc's stephanie ramos. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: kendis and diane, good morning. so, last night donald trump unveiled his energy plan calling it america first. he vowed to bring energy independence to the u.s. by drilling more and getting rid of some regulations. in the meantime, all of the presidential candidates are campaigning in california today including donald trump who thanked north dakota delegates overnight after they helped him reach a major campaign milestone. donald trump did it. he reached the magic number of delegates needed to clinch the republican party's presidential nomination. >> i was coming out of my building this morning and there was a big news flash that donald trump had won the nomination. >> reporter: trump won't officially have the nomination until the convention this summer but until then the billionaire businessman is leapfrogging towards the general election going after his likely democratic opponent, hillary clinton.

>> politicians like hillary clinton have failed you and they failed you badly. >> reporter: clinton acknowledging trump's milestone. >> that means an unqualified loose cannon is within reach of the most powerful job in the world. >> reporter: in response to her e-mail controversy and that critical inspector general's report, clinton says use of a private e-mail server was allowed. >> the use of personal e-mail was a practice by other secretaries of state and the rules were not clarified until after i had left. >> clinton still locked in a contentious primary battle with bernie sanders opting out of a one-on-one debate with the vermont senator. sanders instead taking trump's california debate offer made on "jimmy kimmel live." >> you made it possible for us to have a very interesting debate. >> that's right. >> about two guys who looked at the world very, very differently. >> oh, boy, do you guys look at it differently. >> reporter: there's no denying that. trump says a debate with sanders would not come cheap.

frightening moments in a new york city neighborhood. a driver apparently trying to get away barreled down a sidewalk in brooklyn hitting a child. dash cam video captured the scene as the car hurtled down the sidewalk narrowly missing women, children, even a baby stroller. the driver eventually caught. also in new york, police have made an arrest in that deadly shooting at a popular concert venue. video shows a gunman bursting through the door of a vip room apparently chasing someone else as bystanders huddle in fear. one man was killed. three others hurt in that shooting, and it all happened as rapper t.i. was preparing to take the stage. well, as millions of americans hit the road for the memorial day weekend, prices at the pump have been rising for two weeks now. the average price for gas is now $2.33 a gallon. that's still 40 cents cheaper than this time last year, the lowest for this time of year in a decade. and millions of americans will be heading to the beach for the holiday weekend. >> that means it is time for the
