good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo with some of the top headlines we're following for you this morning on "world news now." two people are dead, several wounded after a shoot-out in houston. a gunman opened fire on bystanders and police. authorities are now investigating whether a second shooter was involved. >> the number of migrants killed in recent ship wrecks is on the rise. it's now believed more than 700 people died in three separate wrecks since wednesday. a major manhunt is under way we have breaking news where a soccer star has been rescued from kidnappers. this

gunman leaving from a party. and the first time is the charm for a rookie of the indy 500. >> you just won the indy 500, baby. >> yes, he did a part-time driver just a year ago is now part of auto racing history. >> wow. >> those are some of our top stories on this monday, memorial day, may 30th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> so crazy. they say he had only been training for three months for that race. >> unbelievable. rookie luck. we'll see what he follows up with next year. we begin this half hour with the shoot-out in houston. two people were killed, six others injured during this wild shooting spree. even a police helicopter came under fire. >> there are so many questions at this hour about this. even though it's been hours since a s.w.a.t. officer shot and killed the primary shooter, police are not sure exactly what happened or why. abc's phillip mena reports. >> reporter: the crackle of gunfire erupting in a houston neighborhood. >> one more down at -- two people down. >> reporter: 10:15 a.m. officers arrive to find two men

armed with guns. one an ar-15 rifle. police say at least one of the suspects opened fire in the streets, blowing out car windows and igniting a gas station. >> do we believe this is just one or do we think we have two shooters? >> reporter: residents told to stay in their homes as a gun battle raged outside. >> get in your house! >> come in those outside windows. >> reporter: video shot from inside a nearby church where congregants huddled together for safety. the first officer on the scene shot several times. s.w.a.t. teams and a police chopper move in. gunmen firing on that chopper, even hitting homes. >> female was shot in the leg. >> reporter: one woman shot in her car, another driver killed. nicolas, a boy scout, giving first aid to a wounded officer. >> i asked him to remove his vest, and once he had done that, i wrapped up the wound on either side of his leg. >> reporter: eight shot in all. bullets coming just inches from this man. >> the bullet came through that door and then it went through

that seat. >> reporter: another man who for moment police are calling a suspect was wounded by gunfire but police aren't saying who shot him. police are still searching for a motive because one of the suspects is alive and in the hospital. investigators are hoping he may be able to provide them with some answers. phillip mena, abc news, houston. emergency crews have recovered two more bodies from the floods swamping central and southeastern texas bringing the death toll now to six. the storm is packing plenty of nasty weather. rain, wind, even hail in parts. that's keeping most people indoors over this holiday weekend. most roadways are flooded. especially around swollen rivers. and with more wet weather expected today, evacuations are under way outside of houston including two prisons. conditions are miserable along the east coast especially in the carolinas thanks to tropical depression bonnie. that system slowed down a bit but dumped enough rain to flood much of the area. flooding along the interstate 95 forced a shutdown which backed up traffic for hours.

and that rain will be making its way north drenching most of the east coast today. >> for a look at the forecast, let's head over to accuweather's paul williams now. good morning, paul. >> good morning to you, diane, kendis. we have the influence of bonnie still creating downpours along the east coast. courtesy of a high pressure system that's going to guide that along, as well. the big story, even right now as we're speaking, the strong thunderstorms still rumbling throughout portions of texas was thunderstorms throughout the overnight period. stronger storms up towards the panhandle of texas as well as oklahoma. some of these storms also blossom into dangerous tornados. diane, kendis. >> all right. our thanks to paul. the family of a boy who fell into the gorilla exhibit at the cincinnati zoo says he's back home and in their words doing fine. video shows the moments after the child fell and made contact with a male gorilla. zoo officials decided to shoot and kill the animal to save that boy. witnesses say it appeared the gorilla was trying to protect the child.

and not harm him. peta says the incident could have been prevented if a secondary barrier around the exhibit was in place. to florida now, where a teenager is recovering after being bitten by a shark near jacksonville. the boy was treated for an eight-inch bite behind his right knee on top of his calf. the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. a shark attacked what might be one, may have caused the injuries suffered by a swimmer off southern california. the woman was found, she was bleeding heavily. and they believe it was a large bite on her upper torso and shoulder. the beach was closed for about 45 minutes while they searched for a shark and will be closed for 24 hours entirely. turning to the battle for the white house now, bernie sanders is digging in for a victory in california, despite calls for him to drop out. donald trump spent part of the memorial day weekend trying to woo the nation's veterans. abc's karen travers has the

latest. >> reporter: bikers taking over washington, d.c. the roar of motorcycle engines echoing through the streets of the nation's capital, as riders gather to honor military veterans. >> i thought this would be like dr. martin luther king where the people would be lined up from here all the way to the washington monument. >> reporter: the headline speaker at the annual rolling thunder event presumptive republican nominee donald trump who often professes his love for veterans. >> we're going to rebuild our military and we're going to take care of our veterans. >> reporter: sunday's event honors american veterans missing in action and prisoners of war. but trump is getting new criticism for past comments he made about a former p.o.w., senator john mccain. >> i like people that weren't captured, okay? i hate to tell you. >> reporter: one time gop nominee and decorated veteran bob dole has endorsed the

billionaire, but in a recent interview on cnn, he said trump needs to apologize. >> i'm going to try to get trump to issue an apology. >> reporter: also calling out trump, candidate bernie sanders. still hammering the republican for accepting then declining a debate. >> and i think the american people should be very concerned about somebody who keeps changing his mind not only on this debate but on virtually every issue he's been asked about. >> reporter: sanders is campaigning hard in california ahead that have state's primary. but california's senior senator and hillary clinton supporter dianne feinstein says it's time for him to bow out. >> he ought to be able to be read the sign posts. if he did that, he would know that it's all but over. >> reporter: unlikely to happen before californians cast their ballots. karen travers, abc news, washington. harm yo rubio is reflecting on his presidential campaign

after saying he will support donald trump following a bruising primary battle he now says he would be willing to speak at the republican national convention on trump's behalf. rubio is leaving the senate after his term ends. he told cnn he apologized privately to trump after one of the debates for comments that he made about trump's hands. >> i apologized to him for that. i said it's not who i am and i shouldn't have done it. >> rubio insists that he is not open to being trump's running mate. he says they still have real policy differences and trump should choose someone who fully embraces his vision. as iraqi forces get ready to retake the city of fallujah from isis, they're getting aerial support from u.s. forces and its allies. spy planes are tracking islamic state movements from far above. harm that rad martha raddatz has the story. >> reporter: coming in for a landing at an air base on the arabian peninsula, the famed u-2 spy plane. we are in the chase car speeding alongside at close to 100 miles per hour, the driver talking the pilot down safely, since he has limited visibility in this

>> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everybody on this memorial day. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. let's get right to that shooting spree in houston that left two people dead, several wounded including some law enforcement officers. >> it was a wild scene. police in houston this morning are still left with so many questions about this. how many gunmen were involved and why did this start. >> get in your house! >> a peaceful holiday calm shattered by gunfire. police say a man walked into an auto detail shop and shot a male customer dead. 10:15 in the morning, two men armed with guns, one an ar-15 rifle. police say at least one of them opening fire in the streets. blowing out car windows, igniting a gas station.

that began a shooting spree that ended hundreds of rounds later with the first shooter dead. >> we have eight shooting victims, two constables, two suspects, four citizens. >> reporter: police initially thought they were looking for two suspects. now they're taking a second look at that second man who was wounded in the hospital. one gunman apparently opened fire indiscriminately. one woman shot in her car. this driver narrowly escaping being hit. >> then it went through that seat, then it come back through that seat. >> reporter: five police cars were shot up. this cruiser was hit 21 times. >> we don't know if he was out to you know, target law enforcement and just wait for them to get here. if he was going to shoot people randomly. >> reporter: the gunman even had a military stale ar-15 rifle that he used to put five bullets in a police helicopter. a s.w.a.t. officer ending the mayhem. >> the only officer who fired a weapon was the s.w.a.t. officer

who fatally struck the shooter. >> reporter: police now searching for a motive. >> one police officer was slightly wounded in the hand. another's life was likely saved by the metal breast plates he had inserted in his protective vest. there is also a fire at a gas station next door to the shoot-out believed to have been started by that gunfire. record rainfall is pounding central and southeastern texas, triggering deadly widespread flooding. authorities say six people have died so far related to the storms. with more coming today, mandatory evacuations are under way in parts of suburban houston, including two prisons. memorial day events have been canceled across the area and authorities warning residents to brace for much more flash flooding overt next few days. tropical depression bonnie is also spinning over the carolinas dumping about 8 inches of rain there. much of interstate 59 pass been underwater backing up traffic for hours. some drivers took their chances with alternate routes but they

also found flooding as high as six feet in some spots. >> we saw one car going through it. the guy came back and said water got in his car and there was a fish in his car. >> more heavy, rain, wind, rough surf and flooding are also coming today expanding into the northeast along the i-95 corridor. the numbers are staggering. and reaching some big levels as the bodies of more immigrants are recovered from ship wrecks in the mediterranean. it's now believed that more than 700 people have been killed in three separate wrecks since wednesday. survivors as well as bodies of the dead arrived yesterday in southern italy. most of the migrants are believed to be from sub-saharan africa. a teenager is recovering after being bitten by a shark off the coast of north florida. this video was taken just hours after the attack. the boy was on a surfboard with his father when the shark swam up and bit him on the calf. rescuers say judging by the size of the bite the shark was about five feet long. the beach was closed for about hour before swimmers could

finally return. and in southern california, investigators are trying to figure out if a shark bite is to blame for another's injury. lifeguards at newport beach received a call for a woman in distress and bleeding heavily with large bite marks on upper torso and shoulder. there had been no reports of sharks in the area. the beach is now closed at least till morning. let's go to the growing controversy over the shooting of a gorilla at the cincinnati zoo. the animal was killed over the weekend after a 4-year-old boy somehow fell in the gorilla enclosure. the zoo's dangerous animal response team shot the 17-year-old ape named harambe because they feared for the boy's life. one witness says that might have been an overreaction. >> he wasn't harming the child. it seemed the gorilla was scared, as well. it started getting louder. that's when the gorilla ran with the child. in the water. >> peta blames the zoo saying there should have been a secondary barrier between humans and the animals.

in a now deleted facebook post, the boy's mother wrote "society is quick to judge. she keeps a tight watch on her kids and accidents happen. according to the boy's family, he's back home and he's doing fine. now to politics. donald trump is using the memorial day weekend to make a direct appeal to veterans. he addressed the rolling thunder motorcycle group in front of the lincoln memorial repeating the claim the u.s. often gives illegal immigrants better care than military veterans. abc's devin dwyer has more. >> reporter: rolling thunder rumbling through the nation's capital. >> i will say, no matter where i go, rolling thunder. look at all these bikers. do we love the bikers? yes. >> reporter: trump, who got five deferments during the vietnam war, paying tribute to those americans who did serve. >> we're going to take care of our veterans. we just raised almost $6 million for the vets. >> reporter: but trump's appearance at an event honoring prisoners of war was a stark contrast with his famous

comments about former p.o.w. senator john mccain. >> he's not a war hero. he's a war hero because he was captured. i like people who weren't captured. okay? >> reporter: those words still not sitting well with decorated veteran bob dole, the only former republican nominee to endorse trump. >> i am going to try to get trump to issue an apology. >> reporter: but many members of the veteran community we met here say they give trump a pass. what they like most about trump is that he speaks his mind. >> i like the fact that mr. trump speaks the truth. let the chips fall where they may. >> reporter: trump now calls mccain a good man, but in an interview earlier this month said he has no regrets about his original comments. >> i like john mccain and john mccain is a hero. there are many people that like what i said. after i said that, my poll numbers went up seven points. >> reporter: donald trump said he'll hold a press conference on tuesday to finally reveal the names of the veterans groups who will receive money from his fund-raiser back in january. devin dwyer, abc news, washington. bernie sanders is still

crisscrossing california after failing to oust two hillary clinton supporters from the upcoming democratic convention. sanders asked the dnc to remove connecticut governor dannel malloy and former congressman barney frank as co-chairs of two committees claim they go were biased. the party said they found no grounds to remove him. the libertarian is hoping to offer a viable alternative to donald trump and perhaps hillary clinton. the libertarians officially nominated former governor gary johnson for president. johnson got just 1% of the vote when he ran against president obama and mitt romney in 2012. this time the party is hoping that high unfavorability ratings for trump and clinton will work in their favor. we have breaking news from mexico where a soccer star has been rescued from kidnappers. this image of alan pulido is now

from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning on this holiday, everyone. we're going to get started with that deadly situation in the midwest. the record rainfall over this holiday weekend, it has turned deadly, killing six people in massive flooding that is swamping central and southeastern texas. >> people are looking out at scenes like this. gusty winds. winds blowing sheets of rain sideways. even hail stones accumulating on the lawn. anyone who happened to be around the airport in will you be back, saw a giant wall of dust, dirt and debris known as a haboob swirling overhead. >> and on the east coast, this is what the roadways look like in south carolina. thanks to tropical depression bonnie, the system has aced up quite a bit but managed to dump about 8 inches of rain. that sparked plenty of flooding. a major intersection of interstate 95 was shut down,

backing up traffic for several hours. >> unfortunately, bonnie is bringing more rain to the carolinas today, potentially another 6 inches. >> abc's eva pilgrim reports from south carolina. >> reporter: extreme weather pummeling northern texas. no relief in texas after almost 20 inches of rain forced evacuations, driving families from their homes near houston. the swollen bravos river, seen here from space, now expected to crest over 53 feet. >> i didn't know it was going to come up this fast. >> reporter: at least five dead and three still missing, including an 11-year-old boy in kansas. search teams recovering the body of darren mitchell, a national guardsman who posted this chilling photo on facebook just minutes before his truck was swept away. >> it disappeared. once it flipped, you didn't see tires, truck, nothing. it just tumbled over.

unfortunately, they don't allow them to come in. >> trump had been under fire for not immediately distributing $6 million that he claimed to have raised for veterans. he's holding a news conference tomorrow to announce the name of the charities that will get the money. there are still many unanswered questions after a shooting spree in houston yesterday morning. a man walked into an auto repair shop in an upscale neighborhood and shot a customer dead. many more shots were fired after that and more customers injured before a s.w.a.t. officer finally killed the gunman. one of those injured was also armed. the role of that person is not known. police have been interviewing him at the hospital. >> it's a confusing case. now new video in the fight against isis in iraq video released by the defense ministry there purportedly showing the country's fighter jets carrying

out air strikes on isis hideouts in the iraqi province of baiji. it's not clear when they were carried out. a new york state corrections officer remains in hospital after a package at his home exploded in his hands. it happened sunday morning in the central new york town of floyd. the 52-year-old officer suffered severe burns to his arms and hands. federal, state, and local investigators are trying to figure out if the blast is connected to the officer's job. the gorilla exhibit at the cincinnati zoo remains closed this morning following the weekend shooting of a gorilla inside the enclosure. zoo officials made that decision in order to ensure the safety of a child. marci gonzalez reports from cincinnati. >> oh, my god! >> okay, everybody back up. >> reporter: a young boy recovering after coming face to face with a 400-pound gorilla. >> mommy loves you. i'm right here. >> reporter: for more than ten minutes, onlookers, including the boy's mother, watch in horror after authorities say the 4-year-old crawled through a barrier at the cincinnati zoo's gorilla exhibit saturday making his way through the bushes and plunging ten feet into the moat

below. >> a child has fallen into the gorilla cage. >> reporter: you can see the gorilla's left arm make contact with the boy seated in that shallow water. the boy scoots back. then the gorilla lifts him up, sweeps him across the water. >> the gorilla rushed the boy, but did not hit the boy. at the almost was guarding the boy, was protecting him. >> reporter: with the animal holding the boy between his legs, a zoo worker takes aim. shooting and killing the endangered 17-year-old silverback gorilla harambe. rescuers rushing in, pulling the boy to safety. while the rest of the zoo is opened, the gorilla exhibit is closed. people have been coming by here all day, leaving flowers in honor of harambe. protesters outside of the zoo questioning why the worker didn't instead use a tranquilizer. >> in an agitated situation which the male was, it may take quite awhile for the tranquilizer to take effect.

>> reporter: the boy's family releasing a statement, saying we extend our heartfelt thanks to the cincinnati staff, we know it was a difficult decision for them. the family also saying the boy is now home from the hospital and in their words, doing just fine. marci gonzalez, abc news, cincinnati. nasa is all pumped up about the newest addition to the international space station. the new module installed by inflating it. if it passes all the tests in coming week, one of the astronauts will move into the 13 by 10 1/2-foot room. deflated modules take up less room aboard the spaceship which could be important to that first trip to mars. maybe they could figure out how to do that in new york city. >> it would be a good idea. wingsuit stuntman jeb corliss defied gravity again, this time at the great, oh, my god, wall of china. the human arrow dropped 6,000
