making news in america this morning -- the search for answers after a deadly shooting in houston. a gunman took lives, opened fire on a police car, even a helicopter. now the hunt is on for a motive. it will be a soaked holiday for millions of americans from texas to new england. rain causing record-setting floods as remnants of bonnie come up the eastern seaboard. and it was a frightening turned deadly scene inside a gorilla enclosure, a child fell in the enclosure right next to the animal. his mother's comments. the growing controversy over how the zoo handled it. and wings over the wall. the world's famous dare devil's latest feat, even using himself as target practice. his wild ride ahead.

and we say good morning on this holiday. it's an uneasy holiday in texas, where we start with that wild shooting spree in houston. >> when it was all over two people dead and several injured, including some law enforcement officers. >> nearly 24 hours later, police have so many questions, such as whether a second gunman was involved and what happened. >> get in your home! >> reporter: a peaceful holiday calm shattered by gunfire. houston police say that a man walked into an auto detail shop and shot a man customer dead. 10:15 in the morning, two men armed with guns, police say at least one of them opening fire in the streets, blowing out car windows, igniting a gas station. that began a shooting spree that ended hundreds of rounds later. with the first shooter dead. >> we have eight shooting victims, two constables.

two suspects. four citizens. >> reporter: police initially thought they were looking for two suspects. now they say they're taking a second look at that second man who was wounded in the hospital. one gunman apparently opened fire indiscriminantly. one woman shot in her car. this driver narrowly escaping being hit. >> and then it went through that seat and it came back through that seat. >> reporter: five police cars were shot up. this cruiser was hit 21 times. >> we don't know if he was out to, you know, target law enforcement and wait for them to get here. if he was going to shoot people randomly. >> reporter: the gunman even had a military-style ar-15 rifle. that he used to put five bullets in a police helicopter. a s.w.a.t. officer ended the mayhem. >> the only law enforcement officer who fired a weapon was the s.w.a.t. officer who fatally struck the shooter. >> reporter: police now searching for a motive. and get this, one of the police cruisers had 21 bullet holes but amazingly the officer inside was

not injured. there was also a fire at a gas station next door believed to be started by the gunfire. millions of americans are spending the long holiday weekend indoors, seeking shelter from severe storms drenching two major sections of the country. >> in central and southeastern texas the storms have turned deadly, six people now confirmed killed in the widespread flooding. coast guard and other emergency crews have rescued several people from homes and cars trapped by rising floodwaters. tropical depression bonnie is hovering over the east coast, bringing heavy rain, flooding and rough tides. at least eight inches of rain have pounded areas like south carolina packed with tourists for the memorial day weekend. and those looking for a way out found themselves stuck for hours because of the high water that shut down roadways including a section of interstate 95. >> and guess what, the nasty conditions will be sticking around. >> accuweather's paul williams joins us now with the holiday

forecast. good morning to you, we have the influence of bonnie still creating downpours along the east coast, courtesy of a high-pressure system that will guide that along. but the big story right now as we're speaking, the strong thunderstorms still rumbling throughout portions of texas, with widespread scattered storms throughout the overnight. the central portions of the state up toward the panhandle of texas. some of these storms will blossom into dangerous tornadoes. diane, kendis. >> okay, paul, thank you. turning to politics on this memorial day weekend. donald trump is making a direct appeal to u.s. veterans. promising to make their lives better. >> and bernie sanders is campaigning hard in california as he faces a new call to step aside. abc's kenneth moton has the latest from washington for us. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: new this morning, the libertarians have picked a nominee. and this year's third-party candidate can be a real spoiler. this memorial day is the unofficial start of the summer

and the 2016 race is heating up. >> we're going to rebuild our military and we're going to take care of our veterans. >> reporter: sunday, donald trump was in washington revving up support at the rolling thunder motorcycle ride. the event brings awareness to prisoners of war. and service members missing in action. but it's trump's comments about one former p.o.w. john mccain that's getting new attention. >> i like people who weren't captured, okay. >> reporter: the only former gop nominee to endorse trump, decorated veteran bob dole said that trump needs to apologize. bernie sanders continues to call out donald trump and his democratic opponent hillary clinton. sunday night, sanders rallied thousands in fresno ahead of next week's california primary. the state's senator and clinton's supporter, senator dianne feinstein said it's time for him to bow out. >> he ought to be able to read the sign post. if he did that, he would know that it's all but over. >> reporter: but the candidates in the race have a new opponent. >> for the nominee for president of the united states, governor

gary johnson! >> reporter: over the weekend, in orlando, two-term new mexico governor gary johnson emerged as the libertarian candidate. polls said a good group of voters are looking for an alternative to trump and clinton. they believe they have a real shot this year. diane and kendis. >> all right, keeping things interesting. thanks, kenneth. want to get to some breaking news right now from iraq, where a new offensive to retake the city of fallujah from isis has started. federal police units along with army units backed by the iraqi air force, entered the city from three directions this morning. the u.s.-led coalition has been providing air support in the week leading up to the assault. the numbers are reaching staggering levels as bodies of more migrants

are being recovered from shipwrecks in the mediterranean. it's believed that more than 700 people have been killed in three separate wrecks since wednesday. survivors as well as bodies of the dead arrived in southern italy. and more breaking news this morning -- from mexico, where a soccer star has been rescued from kidnappers. take a look at this image of alan pulido, just being released by mexican authorities. he's now undergoing some medical evaluations. pulido was intercepted by armed men after leaving a party saturday night not far from his home. no group has claimed responsibility and no ransom demand was at least been made public. a wingsuit dare devil has defied gravity, this time at the great wall of china. he dropped 6,000 feet from a helicopter and then soared through a paper target on the great wall. >> wow, you can say he nailed it. he said this was all about precision, and he's done with the death-defying stuff at least for now.

a florida teenager is recovering after being bitten by a shark near jacksonville, the boy was rushed to the hospital to be treated for an eight-inch bite behind his right knee. he was surfing with his father when the attack happened. the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

and in southern california, a shark may be to blamed for injuries suffered by a swimmer in long beach. and on this memorial day, we're learning that flag sales are soaring, a wisconsin flagmaker says its sales are up 15% from this time from last year. partly due to this being an election year. the company's chief operating officer said it's more than that there's been a rise in patriotism. x:men apocalypse was easily topped at the box office but didn't do as well as expected. it pulled in $65 million over three days. but alice through the looking glass from our parent company disney, flopped. when you think of coconut-flavored goodies, the color white usually comes to mind.

hillshire farm. because it's worth doing right. a wild explosion and it's caught on camera. take a look there during a race. what happened, one rider spun out and another ran over the bike's gas tank and the fireball results. there were no major injuries and eventually the race in spain was restarted with all the riders, except the one who spun out. believe it or not his bike was ruined. here at home, this weather is creating some major challenges for drivers on the east coast, especially along the i-95 corridor. where you're likely to find flooding. and you can plan on similar conditions from the gulf coast to the canadian border. if you're planning to fly, heavy rains could cause delays in new york, philadelphia washington, d.c. storms in dallas and houston. the gorilla exhibit at the cincinnati zoo remains closed this morning.

following the weekend shooting of the gorilla inside the enclosure. >> zoo officials said making the decision to kill the animal in order to ensure the safety of a child. abc's marci gonzalez reports from cincinnati. >> oh, my god! >> okay, everybody back up. >> reporter: a young boy recovering after coming face to face with a 400-pound gorilla. >> mommy loves you. i'm right here. >> reporter: for more than ten minutes, onlookers, including the boy's mother, watch in horror after authorities say the 4-year-old crawled through a barrier, making his way through the bushes and plunging ten feet into the moat below. >> i heard her yell that's my baby. it was loud and chaotic. very traumatizing. >> reporter: you can see the gorilla's left arm make contact with the boy seated in that shallow water. the boy scoots back. the gorilla seemingly lifts him

up, sweeps him across the water. >> stood over him in a protective stance. he wasn't harming the child. seemed that the gorilla was scared as well. >> reporter: with the animal holding the boy between his legs, a zoo worker takes aim. shooting and killing the endangered 17-year-old silverback gorilla named harambe. >> a loud bang. >> reporter: rescuers rushing in, pulling the boy to safety. while the rest of the zoo is open, the gorilla exhibit is closed. people have been coming by here all day, leaving flowers in honor of the gorilla. protesters outside of the zoo questioning why the worker didn't instead use a tranquilizer. >> in an agitated situation, it may take quite a while for a tranquilizer to take effect. >> reporter: marci gonzalez, abc news, cincinnati.

one more note on that n a now-deleted facebook post, a mother said he has a concussions and a few scrapes. she also said, quote, society is quick to judge. she keeps a tight watch on her kids and accidents happen. three southern californian women are being created. the women claim they saw a man dropping something into a woman's drink while she was in a restroom. one of the good samaritans went to the restroom to let her know. >> i got up and went to the restroom and i found if her in there and i just said, this is weird, but we saw that guy you're with put something in your drink. >> they said surveillance video also saw the same thing. the man was arrested. the three good samaritans have posted a photo on facebook. >> to sports now and this weekend's champions league soccer. final ended with spain's real madrid winning its 11th european title. but their opponents had a moment
