good morning. i'm linzie janis in for diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." on a tirade. a furious donald trump unleashing on the press as he accounts for millions of dollars from his fund-raiser for veterans. he targeted reporters who grilled him, calling them dishonest, even sleazy. a full report coming up shortly. >> targeting our tom llamas. in oklahoma, a former volunteer deputy has been sentenced to four years in prison for killing an unarmed man last year. robert bates said the shooting was an accident when he hiss took his handgun for his stun gun. >> in new jersey, a mother who contracted zika virus overseas has given birth to a baby with a severe birth defect. zika has been linked to brain

contributions, calling the press dishonest and sleazy. he said he's never received such bad publicity for doing such a good thing. here's more from richard cantu. >> i sent people checks of a lot of money. >> reporter: the presumptive republican nominee on defense. >> instead of being like thank you very much, mr. trump, or trump did a good job, everyone said who got it, who got it, who got it. you make me look very bad. >> reporter: back in january during an event in iowa, he claimed he raised $6 million for veterans including $1 million of his own money. >> we just cracked $6 million, right? $6 million. >> but recently, trump's campaign manager suggested the total raised was closer to $4.5 million. and trump's own million dollar contribution was only made last week. abc's tom llamas asked trump about the mounting questions and criticism. >> mr. trump, writing a $1 million check is incredibly generous. the night of that iowa fund-raiser, you said you had raised $6 million. clearly you had not. your critics say you exaggerate and have a problem with the

truth. is this a prime example? >> i raised almost $6 million. more money is coming through than didn't come through. >> reporter: that question seemed to strike a nerve. three minutes later, trump lashed out. >> i'm not looking for credit. but what i don't want is when i raise millions of dollars, have people say like this sleazy guy right over here from abc, he's a sleaze. >> why am i a sleaze? >> you're a sleaze because you know the facts and you know the facts well. >> because i ask fair questions. >> hillary clinton wasted no time responding. >> but it took a reporter to shame him into actually making his contribution and getting the money to veterans. >> reporter: mrs. clinton vowed to get along with reporters better. >> you think i'm going to change. i'm not changing. >> reporter: richard cantu, abc news, new york. >> so trump was also angry over the release of sales pitch documents from trump university. his now defunct real estate school. the so-called playbook from trump university revealed employees were instructed to target customers who made at least $90,000 a year and told to

use flattery and sell feelings, not products. trump university is facing three lawsuits accused of fleecing students and failing to deliver on promises. donald trump claims that many customers were satisfied. 6 >> some of those courses $30,000. hillary clinton and bernie sanders are both zeroing in on california ahead of tuesday's primary. starting tomorrow, clinton's going to be on a five-day swing across the state despite an endorsement from governor jerry brown and virtually every major california democrat. sanders is putting up a tough fight. he's been crisscrossing the state and holding back to back rallies every day. clinton's trying to avoid an embarrassing loss there, but it won't stop her from clinching the nomination. the name of a possible third party candidate has been revealed. identified as david french, french is a conservative writer, constitutional lawyer, and iraq war veteran. a source involved in an effort to recruit an independent alternative to donald trump

tells abc news that french has had serious discussions about agreeing to run. french tweeted last night, i'm incredibly humbled by and grateful for the many expressions of support. now to the flooding emergency happening in the southeast part of texas. want to show you this drone video that shows how widespread the flooding of the brazos river is. so much brown muddy water and virtually nowhere for it to go. hundreds of people have been forced to evacuate in several communities. the river crested last night at more than three feet over its previous flood record. local officials say the situation isn't getting better anytime soon. >> this river is going to stay high throughout the rest of this week and into the weekend. so we are going to have some -- this is going to be awhile. maybe the worst news of all, up to three more inches of rain are expected in that area later on this week. >> and this flooding in the city of brownwood, texas, which is about 140 miles from austin, texas.

the water has spilled out of what's called pecan bayou, a tributary of the colorado river. additional rainfall is expected in that the area, as well. which will only make the flooding there worse. >> there are increasing fears about the 50,000 civilians in fallujah as iraqi government troops try to retake that city from isis. humanitarian groups warn of a "human catastrophe." there are reports of people starving to death or being executed for refusing to fight for isis. informers say families are being used as human shields. thousands of canadians are expected to begin returning home today almost a month after a massive wildfire. you'll remember these images about 2,400 structures were lost in ft. mcmurray. but 90% of the city remains intact. 80,000 residents were displaced by the fire. they'll move back in phases. now to cincinnati where police are looking into whether the parents of the child who

fell into a gorilla enclosure committed a crime. the incident triggered outrage with some calling for the mother to be charged with child endangerment. abc's alex perez is in cincinnati. >> reporter: after those heart-racing images, cincinnati police confirm they are investigating whether the 3-year-old boy's family properly supervised him in the moments before he fell into the gorilla exhibit. the boy's mother can be heard screaming as the horrifying ordeal unfolded. >> mommy loves you! i'm right here! >> reporter: the first call came in at 3:52 p.m. saturday. >> a child has fallen into the gorilla cage. >> reporter: authorities say the child climbed over the three-foot barrier, plunging 15 feet into the moat. the 450-pound gorilla named harambe cornering the boy. at one point, the little boy moves away from the gorilla, but is then pulled back towards him. he later props him up from behind and eventually dragging him all the way to the other side of the cage.

at 4:01, after ten agonizing minutes, the zoo's emergency response team makes the decision to shoot and kill the gorilla. officials say a tranquilizer dart would have taken too long. the boy rescued two minutes after that shot was fired at 4:03. >> the last option is something that we train for on a regular basis. we don't ever want to have to use this, but deadly force is what ended this situation. >> reporter: a similar incident at an illinois zoo in 1996 saw a very different outcome. a gorilla cradling this 3-year-old after falling in. the zoo believing the gorilla was trying to protect him. in the cincinnati case, the zoo felt the boy was at risk. renowned wildlife expert jack hanna saying he stands by the zoo's decision. >> i'll tell you right now, i'll bet my life right now, if i had to, that that child would not be here today. >> reporter: animal activist groups slamming the zoo. >> the physical barriers at the cincinnati zoo are not adequate to keep people out of the enclosures. >> reporter: our cameras capturing crews making changes

to the barriers at the gorilla exhibit. and the zoo's most recent federal inspection was less than two months ago. the zoo and those barriers passed without any citations. alex perez, abc news, cincinnati. >> if you're planning to go to europe sometime this summer, strong warning from the state department, says be careful. it warns several high profile events could be targets for terrorists including this month's european soccer championships in france. the tour de france and the catholic church's world youth day in poland. concerns about terrorism in europe have increased since the november attacks in paris. another black eye for the tsa. a new government report indicates the embattled agency isn't helping airports keep up with the threat of intruders breaching security fences at american airports. that report indicate there were

more than 2,500 security incidents in each of the past three years at hundreds of airports. the tsa acknowledges it could do more and it says it will be looking at how that can happen. a hacker with some clear political leanings hacked into the dallas, texas, department of transportation computer. here is the result. a sign reading bernie for president. another sign a short distance away called donald trump a shape shifting lizard. this isn't the first time it's happened in that area. other signs were hacked last july. >> all right. interesting. he's got a leaning, definitely. so a blessed event for the national zoo. the birth of a kiwi chick to the zoo's -- >> we're not talking about a girl from new zealand. >> no, that would be nice, too. to the zoo's breathing pair of endangered flightless birds. the zoo hatched at the zoo's research center outside washington. >> the newborn is currently in an incubator and its gender won't be known for several weeks. it appears to be healthy and doing well. >> as you mentioned it, did happen at the conservation institute. kiwis are native to new zealand

here's abc's lauren lyster. >> reporter: a california man in court facing assault charges after allegedly slipping a drug into his date's drink. the suspected plot foiled by fellow diners who took matters into their own hands. >> i noticed a gentleman at the table next to me acting pretty suspicious. >> reporter: what did you think he was doing? >> i thought he was trying to lace her drink. >> reporter: one friend rushing to the bathroom to tell the woman. >> i know this is really weird, but we saw the guy you were with put something in your drink. >> reporter: another flagging restaurant staff, who called police after security footage allegedly confirmed their suspicions. the police arresting 24-year-old michael hsu in the restaurant and confiscating the woman's drink as evidence. those friends sharing their story on facebook to warn other women. >> i am completely filled with gratitude that we were able to see it, to tell someone about it and to help another woman out.

bethany hamilton continues to outdo herself this time with a stunning performance at the world surf league's fiji women's pro. >> her ability. >> she is a super human. >> reporter: after earning a wildcard spot at the event, the 26-year-old mom beat some of the best surfers in the world to advance to the semifinals of the competition where she ultimately placed third overall. tweeting "beyond stoked to finish third in the fiji pro as the wildcard, loved competing and looking forward to more adventures." >> i'm so happy because like i haven't had a good heat in awhile. feels really good. >> reporter: hamilton was the top amateur surfer at age 13 when a 14-foot tiger shark ripped off her left arm. you might recognize this image of her surfboard with a bite mark. she captivated the world with her comeback and was back in the water within a month.

she spoke with abc's abbie boudreau in 2011 about the experience. >> i already knew how to surf. i had to adapt to the new change in my body. >> reporter: tell us about the day that you decided to go back into the water. >> i kind of struggled on my first couple waves and didn't get up. and then i got up on my third wave and rode it all the way to the beach. >> she's had quite a journey since then from competing in the "amazing race." >> yeah. i hope this challenge is doable. >> reporter: to starting a family last june and now finishing third at the world surfing league competition. hamilton's story continues to inspire. >> even after losing my arm, i'm still like doing everything i hoped i could do in my future and even more. and i think i'm just a reminder for the young girls that like hey, you can do it if you set your mind to it. >> dan harris, abc news, new york. >> incredible woman. >> yeah. can you believe she lost like 60% of her blood in that attack? >> they made a movie about her, too. i got to watch it. it's called "soul surfer." 2011. >> watched her on "amazing

below flood levels until the weekend. the water could remain high for up to three weeks. >> wow. so north of there in central oklahoma, it was really a frightening day as a series of small tornados were seen. the twisters were short lived. they caused no reports of damage or injuries. so let's get more now from the texas flood zone. abc's phillip mena is there. >> reporter: in texas, the rivers are rising and the records are falling. >> this is at a critical stage here, because this water is just about out of its banks. >> reporter: we toured the devastated neighborhoods in richmond. residents helplessly watching floodwaters creep to their doorsteps. how bad is it right now? >> real bad. i was here last night, i haven't slept all night. >> reporter: in booth, they're packing up and moving out. >> my husband came home at 5:00 this morning and said, "get out of bed, get your clothes and let's get out of here." >> reporter: the town of thompsons cut off. the main road in now a river. i'm about two miles away from where the banks of the brazos river should be.

instead, it's right here. the river is cresting at nearly 54 feet, the highest levels in more than 20 years. the floodwaters infested with fire ants, water moccasins and debris. families trying to save livestock. horses in simonton -- >> there they are, all ten of them. >> reporter: -- sheltering on this home's front porch. parts of texas, seeing their wettest may on record. up to 20 inches of rain in the past week alone. now, at least seven dead, including an austin woman who drowned while tubing monday evening. it's not raining here now. that's the good news. but the bad news is, more rain is coming later this week. phillip mena, abc news, richmond, texas. >> quite a scene there. the rain showing no signs of quitting in texas. checking the radar right now, parts of central and western texas could get up to 4 inches of rain. over the next two days. unbelievable. some flash flooding could happen there during that time. fortunately, eastern texas will see smaller amounts of rain.

overseas now where the syrian government has carried out a wave of deadly air strikes on rebel targets. some of these images is difficult to watch. the video shows young children being pulled from the rubble after the bombs hit. at least 17 people were killed and dozens more were hurt. the u.n. estimates 400,000 people have died in the syrian civil war. >> now to donald trump coming out swinging against the media as he backed up claims that he raised millions for veterans. trump held a news conference to name dozens of groups that benefited from $5.6 million that he collected during a fund-raiser for vets in january. some of the contributions including trump's own million dollar check was only mailed last week after trump was pressured to give an accounting of the money. yesterday he railed against reporter who's questioned him including our own tom llamas. >> i'm not looking for credit. but what i don't want is when i raise millions of dollars have

a two-front war. out in california, bernie sanders is riding a wave of momentum. sanders is drawing huge crowds in santa cruz. >> and if we win here in the largest state in our country, we're going to go marching into the democratic convention with incredible momentum and we will march out with the democratic nomination. >> reporter: the reality, sanders could win in california, but has very little chance of actually winning the nomination. clinton has built up a huge delegate lead. jerry brown, california's popular governor, endorsed clinton in a letter saying, "clinton's lead is insurmountable." a point echoed by california's senior senator, a clinton supporter who suggested to me it's time for sanders to pack it in. >> he ought to be able to read the sign posts as well as anybody else. and if he did that, he would know that it's all but over. >> reporter: it's a total

reversal of eight years ago when hillary clinton scored a big victory in the california primary and we all know what happened then. symbolically, it would be a huge blow for clinton to lose in california. that's why the clinton campaign has just announced she will go on a five-day campaign swing throughout california beginning on thursday. she may not need the delegates, but she sure doesn't want to end her primary campaign with a loss in california. jonathan karl, abc news, washington. new details are emerging about this weekend's shooting spree in houston. army veteran dionisio garza fired 212 times before a sniper killed him. police believe he was suffering from some sort of depression. they think he acted alone, not as part of any terrorist group and he left rambling messages taped to the walls of the tire shop where he killed a customer. a former oklahoma volunteer deputy has been sentenced to four years in prison for killing an unarmed man last year. 74-year-old robert bates said

the shooting was an accident when he mistook his handgun for his stungun. killing eric harris. the judge said that he took into account bates' age, failing health and dozens of letters asking for leniency. lawyers for bates are planning an appeal. police in charlotte, north carolina, are trying to determine why a packed school bus crashed into a man's house. that man needs to find a new place to live. abc's david kerley has the details. >> reporter: down a 30-foot embankment with nearly two dozen onboard, it was a house and a tree that stopped this school bus. >> somebody help! >> charlotte police. do you need police, fire or medic? >> i need an ambulance. i need 911. the bus is wrecked! the bus is wrecked! >> reporter: that frantic call as students crawled out of the crumpled charlotte, north carolina, bus. >> some people jumped out the window, some people jumped out the exit. >> reporter: and a stunned homeowner wondering exactly what had happened. >> i need police, medic. a school bus just went careeni into my house. >> do you know if any kids are on the bus? >> no. i just heard the crash.

i'm getting dressed now to go outside, i hear them yelling. >> reporter: 12 of the students taken to the hospital have been released. the bus driver who was trapped for a time, still in the hospital, along with one of the students, both in good condition. the driver of the bus has been suspended with pay, which is normal, as the investigation is conducted. the news is not good for the homeowner who tells us he's without a home. authorities have condemned his house because of all the damage. david kerley, abc news, washington. >> a woman who contracted the zika virus overseas has given birth in new jersey. and than newborn has severe brain damage. the mother is visiting the u.s. from honduras. doctors say the baby is also suffering from intestinal and vision issues. zika has been linked to brain abnormalities in developing fetuses. the number of children who suffer concussions may be vastly underreported. until now. up until now, the only cases

flooding that isn't going away and not any time soon in southeastern texas. officials say the brazos river crested last night more than three feet above its previous record high flood stage. it is expected to recede over the next coming days. the river's levels will remain high for up to three weeks. one reason for that is because water will need to be released from swollen reservoirs upstream. further north near dallas, four men whose truck got caught in floodwaters had to be rescued by local firefighters. there were more than a dozen water rescues performed in that area yesterday from both vehicles and homes. abc's ginger zee is tracking the rain in the lone star state. >> reporter: just south of ft. worth, texas, there are cars stranded. so high water pooling up with these slow-moving storms that you see on the radar. you take a place like austin where they're already saturated. they've had their wettest may in record. a flood watch in place from the mexican border up through southeastern oklahoma for the next couple of days.

it's going to last through thursday morning at least. that upper level low going to slow move into the weekend. 4 to 5 inches sandwiched between austin and dallas. ginger zee, abc news, new york. >> federal prosecutors say the family of the san bernardino shooters should not profit from the terrorist act. the government has filed to seize more than a quarter million dollars in life insurance payouts for syed farook. the policies were obtained through his employment with the county health department. instead, the prosecutors want to make the funds available to victims of farook's rampage. >> former cop and convicted killer drew peterson is looking at more prison time. a jury found peterson guilty of trying to hire an inmate to kill the prosecutor who placed him behind bars. jurors deliberated for about hour. peterson is serving a 38-year sentence and faces up to 60 more years in prison as a result. an actor who played a police officer on the tv show "the shield" has been found guilty of murder.

lawyers for michael jace acknowledge he killed his wife but they say he should have been convicted of voluntary manslaughter because there was no premeditation. jace could be sentenced to life behind bars. the california man accused of putting a drug in his date's dink has appeared in court. michael hsu is charged with two felonies in connection with the incident at a santa monica restaurant. three women who say they saw him putting something into the drink alerted his date and the restaurant's management. their facebook post about the incident went viral. if convicted, hsu could get six years in prison. a health alert. general mills is recalling 10 million pounds of flour. an outbreak of e. coli sickened 38 people in 20 states. half of those victims reported eating something homemade with flour. some identified gold medal, wondra, signature kitchens flour. they may have eaten raw dough or batter. >> general mills notes no contamination has been found in any of its products. >> we all know arnold
