breaking news in los angeles, a shooting right now at the campus of ucla. police have surrounded the engineering building at the school. that is what you're looking at. >> ucla has confirmed two people have been shot. right now their condition is not known. the lapd s.w.a.t. team is on scene right now. that campus on lockdown. students and staff are being told to shelter in place, the entire campus on lock down. that's right, we're seeing tweets by the hundreds. this is trending. this student right here, chelsea, is showing the alert. she was sent, "go to secure location and deny entry," sent

out from ucla bruin alert. all the students got that she says, "we are sitting on floor in the class, in the dark." >> people are trying to secure doors in the dark with their belts. finals are just days away for ucla. this is not a summer campus where cool is not in session. officers are in tactical gear on the scene, heavy police presence. they'll likely start going from building to building, floor to floor, clearing each area. in the last half hour we've seen people walking out with hands locked behind their heads, a signal that they are not a shooter and not a threat as they exit buildings. atf, we're told, is en route to the university, they tweeted that out a few minutes ago. no word at this point about the shooter or shooters or whether they're one of the two people shot. >> there is nothing official coming out. there are websites and

organizations tweeting a picture th of a man they believe the police are looking for. they believe the shooter is wearing black jacket, black pants. armed fbi agents are responding right now to the shooting at uca. if you're just joining us, this developed at 10:00 a.m. this morning. we're getting word that lapd is on a city-wide tactical alert throughout los angeles. so a huge presence as they search for a gunman who shot two people at this engineering building at ucla this morning. right now we understand that two are wounded. we have not heard anything beyond that. no confirmation whether they're students. again, as natasha mentioned, ucla's finals are coming up soon. the school is still in their spring semester session, spring quarter. you can see students sheltered in place as atf, fbi agents, and lapd police on tactical alert

are swarming the engineering building called boelter hall. >> it is a very large campus, the entire campus on lockdown right now. really the main focus and where the initial reports are coming out is from the engineering building called boelter hall on exam p campus. one tweet six minutes ago from a student who says he is sheltered in place in a room where the doors open outward so he is not able to lock it. they're trying to barricade things in front of the door. you can imagine what a frightening situation for students and certainly all the family members who have daughters and sons who go to this school. >> two people were shot. again, we want to just summarize what's happened this morning. a ucla spokesman by the time of todd tamberg has confirmed that. the identity and conditions of the victims unknown. everybody is being asked to shelter in place in that engineering building you see on campus. the fbi, bureau of atf, they're

all there right now, lapd, on city-wide tactical alert. hundreds of officers at the west wood campus and surrounding neighborhoods as of about an hour ago. right now, there's no motive for the shooting and nothing official has come out about the gunman, although there are people saying that they saw someone wearing a black jacket and black pants. so that is going to be the focus of the search right now for police. >> helicopter news footage, right now looking at the massive police presence. earlier we saw students walking out of the building in line with their hands above their head as the armed police get them out, the students showing they do not have weapons. a psychology student saying he took cover in the library with other students. the whole campus started running, i started running as well, everyone was very confused, we got into a building, no one knew what was going on. >> obviously a very fluid situation. we've been tracking this since

the scene but weren't sure who was involved. >> there were some people who stayed on the scene. we were trying to figure out who was involved and who were just witnesses. that's still ongoing. >> reporter: one of the alleged hit and run drivers, 21-year-old ricardo contreras, eventually pulled over and was arrested by police. the other driver got away and is still on the loose. the pedestrian, 22-year-old alexandra lozano of east palo alto, was killed. police say she may have been intoxicated. neighbors say the area is dark at night and crossing south jackson avenue is very dangerous. but they don't understand why someone would take off from the scene. >> it's bad. it's not right. people are supposed to stop and wait for the cops. >> reporter: our media partner, the "mercury news," reports this is the 19th fatality in this area this year. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you so much, matt.

we'll take you live to a news conference by the lapd. >> the fbi investigation at this point. what we do know is that a shooting happened. the message to everybody on campus is to shelter in place, lock yourself in a safe place until the authorities are able to get to you or provide a message that it's safe to come out. all the other reports that you're hearing from other sources, please wait until you hear it from an official source, either from lapd, ucla, the fire department, who is also on scene to help support us. as we say, we have responded in an abundance of caution. there are a lot of resources here. the city of los angeles is in place on a tactical alert citywide, which merely means it's a method for lapd to reallocate resources where we need them to make sure we can handle the calls for service in all of the divisions. it does not mean there's something going on in and parts of the city.

as soon as we know what's going on at ucla, we'll be more than happy to provide that to you. again, if you're not at ucla, we ask you to stay away. if you're on the roadways and hear sirens, please pull over so we can can get here. >> reporter: there are reports two people are dead. can you confirm that? >> those reports are not confirmed. as soon as i can confirm injuries or numbers of victims, i'll be happy to do that. >> reporter: what about the description of the suspect being in black, black pants, black hood? >> i have not heard that either. obviously we want to make sure that the public is safe. as soon as i have information that is valid that we can provide to you in terms of the description of the person involved or persons involved, we will be more than happy to do that. at this point we're still gathering all that information. our tactical teams are going with s.w.a.t. and we are going to do this very methodically to make sure everybody is safe and nobody else is injured. >> reporter: lapd is confirming two people are dead.

>> the initial report is that this occurred somewhere near the engineering building. so i'm not familiar with the campus. i'll try to get a better location. as this information comes in, a lot of times it is fast and furious and not always accurate. so i'm very cautious in providing specific details until i know the details are accurate. [ inaudible question ] >> the bomb squad is here. that is a common response with our s.w.a.t. team. in the event we need to breach any doors, the bomb squad is here to facility that, in terms of any type of ordnance or explosive we might have to use to breach doors or if there is any ordnance. there's not been reports of any bombs or devices at this point. wrapping up right now, we'll continue to listen in and provide you the latest on this lapd news conference. basically they're saying information is still coming in, they cannot confirm reports that two people who were shot are dead or the status of the active shooter. of course we'll keep you

updated. let's move on to another story. three of the suspects involved with the murder of a novato high school student appeared in court for the first time today. abc 7 news report tiffany wilson was there. tiffany? >> reporter: kristen, we learned several key pieces of information in court today. the district attorney says this brutal time was gang-related. the district attorney also named a fourth suspect, still on the run, and a warrant is out for his arrest. the da says he's the family member of edwin guavara. he's an adult and faces charges. he is the third to be accused of murder and is suspected of using a machete during the attack last wednesday. edwin ma'am eramirez was killed. diaz's father appeared in court and said his son is doing better. the two other teens charged with murdering their classmate were in court this morning, heavily

restrained and surrounded by probation officers. they will be charged as adults. an additional suspect charged as an accessory to murder was also in court. none of the three spoke except to acknowledge a protective order preventing them from contacting the surviving victim. the case has been continued until next wednesday at 9:00 a.m. in the newsroom, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. bernie sanders is not speaking until 2:30 this afternoon. but people are already lining up in palo alto right now. police say the enthusiasm comes on an already busy day. they're warning you about traffic jams. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield joins us live. >> reporter: good morning, natasha. senator bernie sanders isn't even expected to speak until 2:00, it could even be 3:00. some officers tell me he typically runs a little late. he has an event inside first,

who knows how long that will run. people here say they're willing to wait and are very enthusiastic. you see a wide open field now. in later this afternoon it's expected to be full of bernie sanders supporters. >> i'm sure this place is going to totally fill out. >> it's really exciting. >> reporter: pail lpalo alto police say the community is fired up. they just wish the timing was a bit better. >> both our public high schools have graduations to start this afternoon. >> reporter: the graduations are set to start when the bernie sanders rally will likely be over. in one crowd could be exiting while another arrives. >> the best vice we have for people going to the graduations is leave early, allow plenty of people to get there, especially if you're going to the gun high school graduation, where most of the arterial roadways have to

pass this area. >> reporter: it's not just graduation that will be impacted. green dell elementary school had to close its parking lot for the rally, forcing parents to park in a nearby neighborhood and walk in for morning drop-off. this afternoon they will likely be caught in the sanders crowd. >> there will be lots of traffic. and i think there's a back entrance to the school, so i think they're going to try to navigate pickup over there. but, you know, it could get tricky. >> reporter: it will likely be crowded. people started lining up eight hours before the event. >> i really think california will vote big for bernie. >> reporter: going to be warm today, so police are saying feel the "bern" but don't feel the burn. they're encouraging sunscreen and hats, lots of water. there's no shade here at this field. again, the timing could be -- it's loose, we're not sure how long before he starts or how long he will speak. this could end around 4:00, 4:30. it could get crowded in this

you can see a massive police presence. the school is on lockdown. students and staff have been told to shelter in place. this has been going on since 10:00 a.m. >> the los angeles fire department, campus police, fbi, atf, are all there right now. they'll start going from building to building, floor to floor, clearing the area. students are with the lights out, trying to their best to security doorways, certainly afraid. no word about the shooter at this point or whether that shooter or shooters is one of the two people that was shot. of course we'll continue monitoring it. >> that's a good point, we're seeing some tweets as well, people saying they heard there was a suicide note, but again, none of that is being confirmed by police at the moment, only that there are two people who have been shot and killed.

mike nicco is tracking this for us. >> hey, good morning. you can see plenty of sunshine out there. that wasn't the case earlier this morning. we have a time lapse or two to show you. things start a little bit earlier, the sea breeze did, in the morning. marine layer clouds taking over san francisco, moving over to the east bay. this is the way it looked the other way, as we move through the morning. you can see that the clouds are hanging around a little bit longer. we're pretty foggy along the coast. i don't think we're going to break out into much sunshine. mostly sunny conditions except for the coast which is gray. thick fog in the same spots tonight. cool once again, not as damp as this morning. the warmth will peak and spread to more neighborhoods friday and saturday. you can see the area of low pressure, the counterclockwise flow off the coast. that's bringing the deck of clouds and the rip currents and strong breakers at the coast, watch out for that, until tomorrow evening. we'll have mid- to upper 70s

around oakland and san mateo. low to mid-80s for the rest of the bay show. low to mid-90s inland. that's a break from yesterday, even though it's in the low to mid-90s. if you're going to the coliseum, hat and sunscreen, going for five in a row. 71 i did tdid by the end of th. lincoln high, 88 by the time it's over. more down in san jose, the chargers, leland high school. as you head towards palo alto, both of those high schools are graduating, dropping down to 72. they'll feel the "bern," probably pretty happy that bernie sanders is there, maybe they'll get their free college education from him. dropping down to 73 by 8:00. you're going to wake up to a little bit of fog tomorrow. then it goes away for friday and
