he ran across the shopping center, went to a shave way store where he brandished a gun but did not point it at anyone in particular. now, we're at a situation now where we're getting confirmation that the second officer, both officers have been shot. we get the latest from fremont police and we get a better sense of the scope of how long this will all play out from the slaifr sheriff oes office. >> both officers were injured by being shot. by the suspect. they are both currently at trauma centers. we are not going to provide much detail about the level of their injuries. one is currently in surgery, and don't have the status of the second. >> you know, we're going to move slow and we're going to move methodical and we're fwing to move safely. we want to resolve this situation safely so we're going to move as fast as we need to or as slow as we need to. >> reporter: and what sergeant kelly talks about methodically and safely and slowly working, we're talking about well over 100 officers on the scene right

now, including federal officers from the fbi and other agencies, even the san mateo county sheriff's office has sent personnel across the bay over here to fremont. now, we have a quick description of the suspect. let cease whether we can get the graphic up so you can follow it. described as a hispanic male 6 feet tall with a shaved head, thin mustache, wearing an orange giants jersey, gray shorts and 30 to 40 years old in age. that's what we have right now. this situation is going to unfold for several more hours at the least. the deputies and police department want to find their suspect now two suspects. we're live if free momt, david louie, abc 7 news. >> within moments of this afternoon's shooting, firefighters and paramedics rushed to save the injured officers. you'll now hear part of their radio conversations. >> yeah, there are two officers involved. we transported one. we want to make sure regional

knows there's incoming. >> as you just heard, an emergency medical supervisor say, other officers didn't wait for an ambulance to arrive at the shooting scene. they drove their injured co-worker to a trauma center in san jose. >> now, people working and shopping at an auto parts store found themselves front and center in this shootout. abc s7 news reporter vic lee is live with reaction from witness whoz must have been quite scared, vic lnchts a lot of people scared here. in fact, there's an order for people to shelter in place. and this is one of the spots where my colleague david louie said there are officers and agents. this is adams avenue just a block away from fremont boulevard. and a couple of blocks away from safe d safeway. behind me, you see the flashing lights of numerous police cars. they are part of a larger contingent of police vehicles including s.w.a.t. trucks which have been circled part of this neighborhood. we have interviewed witnesses who say they saw the shootings or at least one of the shootings that occurred next to the auto

zone car parts store. and that's just a block away from us. they say the suspect was in a white pickup truck. take a listen to all three. >> we seen the truck come into the parking lot and then they drove into the back of the officer close behind. told him, you know, don't move, stay in the car. the guy ended up getting out of the car. the officer said, be still, don't move. and they exchanged shots and the officer was hit. >> i guess he saw one of the shooters like shot at his truck. he saw one of the shooters shoot an officer closest to safeway, okay? and ran into safeway. that's all i knee at this point. >> i see the police that he was pointing to the guy, and then i listened. the shots and the police fell down. he had like orange shirt with black and he have logo on his

back. he had blood on his back. >> so he was shot maybe. >> yeah. he was shot i think. >> reporter: so at least one of the witnesses from the one you just heard says that she you saw blood on the back of one of the suspects and that she's assuming he was wounded. we have not heard about that from the authorities who held a news conference, but at least this witness says that she did see blood on the back of the suspect's t-shirt. again, we are at adams avenue near fremont boulevard. people here were told to shelter in place. now, witnesses tell us that at least one of the suspects ran into this neighborhood and that is why you see that contingent of police cars here. officers and agents who have launched a massive search in this area. back to you. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> vic, thank you. >> and we believe that at least one of the injured officers was rushed to san jose regional

medical center. abc 7 news reporter lillian kim is live with the latest. lillian, what do we know? >> reporter: kristen, we are across the street from san jose regional medical center and all indications are one or both of the officers are here. so far, the hospital has not released any information on their condition. they are referring us to fremont police. now, we have some video from just a little while ago. we saw several police vehicles from fremont pd arrive with their lights and sirens on. san jose police and chp officers are also here presumably to lend moral support and perhaps provide security. we saw at least one person who appeared to be a friend or family member arrive. she was driven here and taken inside by police. it's unclier what her connection is to the officer, but she the only person who has arrived under police escort so far. so a heavy police presence here at san jose regional. no official word from the hospital. if we get any new information, i'll be sure to tweet it. live in san jose, lillian kim, abc 7 news. >> thank you.

and again, we have word that one of the officers is in surgery right now. we'll keep you posted. you'll bant to stay with us for my developments on this breaking news story both here and on abc 7 news and of course on twitter. we're on top of that. moving on for the moment, happening right now in marin county, a search for a third suspect in the murder of a noef tau high school sud last week. authorities are looking for 19 year aeld ga vare ra. police say he is a gang member. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley is live in novato with more on his alleged connection to this case. >> reporter: that's right, dan. sheriff's deputies served a swasht this morning down in san mateo hoping to elect locate this fourth system who they say is a cousin of one of the seasons they have in custody. but he was not there so they issued a photo and a warning. this is javier, a 19-year-old the fourth suspect in the novato high school homicide last yeek.

he's affiliated with gangs. he's been charged with first-degree murder with special circumstances. >> and alleged in addition to that count is an allegation that he used a deadly weapon, which is a machete, during the course of this incident. >> reporter: the other three murder suspects appeared in court today, a 16-year-old relative edwin guevara was arrested last week at this novato apartment complex along with 17-year-old juan carlos martinez enreek's. another classmate rivera is charged as an accessory for driving one suspect home from the murder scene. this defense attorney says he will represent one of the accused. >> he is scared. he's overwhelmed right now. >> reporter: he said he did not know whether the attack was a retaliation for a previous sexual assault. edwin ramirez died in a brutal may 25th stabbing and shooting on a trail near novato high.

another victim survived and called 911. his dad was here in the courtroom. he said had his gravely injured son is doing better. in novato, lesley brinkley, abc 7 news. calm is slowly returning to the ucla campus following gun fire and reports of an active shooter. police determined it was a murder/suicide and a note was found. we learned late today that the victim was a professor. an army of police and fbi agents flooded the campus around 10:00 this morning following reports of gunfire at an engineering building. a school staff member says it was terrifying. >> we were just scared that someone might break through that door and shoot us. didn't know exactly what we can do, but maybe try to take him down. >> it's a tragic event, but it does show that with adequate preparation and good cooperation with all of our law enforcement agencies, we can bring it to a successful close. >> the gunman killed himself and had left a note but police have not yet revealed a motive.

classes at ucla were canceled today but are set to resume tomorrow. well, people will begin gathering shortly for a candlelight vigil for two pittsburg teen aimgers who drowned nedrown ed south lake tahoe. ruiz attended pittsburg high and was to graduate next week. her cousin brandon graduated from pittsburg last year. the twot drowned in a river over the weekend. ruiz's mother told us that she'll be at the graduation ceremony to receive her daughter's diploma. how emotional that will be. she will be laid to rest next week. with this week's heat wave, hazardous ocean dn conditions and a rash of recent near dprounings. firefighters spent the day urging beachgoers to be extra careful. alyssa harrington is live at ocean beach with the warning. alyssa? >> reporter: even though it is cloudy here today, there's still quite a few people at the beach. and you can see lifeguards keeping a close eye on the waves. beach patrol say that instead of responding to emergencies, they want to prevent them.

so they drove around ocean beach go doing community outreach, warning people that even a strong swimmer can get into trouble here. >> today was a just up to your ankles today. clearly they're not listening that well. >> reporter: jim deal's son plays in the waurlt at ocean beach. they live in san francisco and know the dangers that lurk along this coastal stretch. >> as long as somebody has a really close eye on the kids and they're paying attention and they're reminded to pay attention to what the waves are doing, we're pretty confident. >> reporter: the national park service has lifeguards keeping a close eye on the waves during the day. beach patrols with the fire department do community outreach. >> fire department has been training. we have over 200 rescue swimmers in our department. >> reporter: they're warning people about hazardous conditions over the next couple of days. this include cans sneaker waves and strong rip currents. >> so if you get knocked down by a large wave and you're already

democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders spoke to many supporters in palo alto. many waited for hours in the heat waiting for him. chris nguyen is live at the community center where that event was held. chris? >> reporter: it is very warm out here today, kristen, but the event seemed to go off without a hitch. neighbors initially expressed some concern about traffic in the area, but at this hour it appears that the roads around the center appear to be just fine. >> we should learn that lesson. >> reporter: they came for a show, and that's what bernie sanders gave them. >> that is the future vision of this country. >> reporter: despite the heat this afternoon -- >> we did staff up an ambulance and we committed them to the event including an engine

company as well. >> reporter: -- supporters packed the field at the community center. >> i'm a huge bernie sanders fan, and i wouldn't miss this for the world. in fact, i was supposed to go to work. but here i am and i'm feeling the bern. >> reporter: we spoke to the senator one-on-one prior to him taking the stage. >> my hope is that a lot of working people and young people who are tired of establishment politics, tired of establishment economics want real change in this country want a president who stands up for the billionaire class, i hope they come out and vote. >> reporter: there was initially some concern about what kind of traffic impact this rally would have on the neighborhood, but many attendees planned in advance. arriving early to find parking on the street or in the coverly lot itself. many also chose to be dropped off at the entrance. >> we were really surprised it was easy to turn onto the road t. was easy to walk in. >> it was good. >> reporter: parents ats a nearby school were also notified of a alter nitpickup site. >> we've blocked residential neighborhoods with officer staffed barricades just to allow the parents to access that area.

takata air baggs in some new cars. the airbags play be prone to rupturing spewing hot shrapnel through the car. the defect as you probably know is linked to at least 11 deaths worldwide and more than 100 injuries. the senate report says fiat chrysler volkswagen mitsubishi and toyota still install takata airbags in some new vehicles. the carmakers say they are phasing out the risky airbags and the new ones currently are not subject to recall. they say the inflators tend to erupt only when they become old and warn out. carmakers are stilt trying to preplace a risky airbags in older cars. today ford added nearly 2 million vehicles to its recall list. ford is replacing inflators in seven models dating from 2005 through 2011. they include mustangs and lincolns. this is part of the massive expansion of the takata airbag recall announced last month. federal regulators more than doubled the number of vehicles then that needed to have the

faulty airbags replaced. a new report says nonprofit hospitals are suing patients for unpaid medical bills even when they qualify for low-cost or free services. researchers at the university of michigan found most nonprofit hospitals have programs to reduce bills for low-income patients. however, only 42% alert patients about these benefits before suing to collect the debts. the affordable care act requires nonprofit hospitals to notify patients who qualify for free or low-cost services. otherwise, the hospitals could lose their tax-exempt status. >> michael, thanks very much. right now we want to turn our attention to the weather once again. >> oh, boy, hot it's going to stay that way for another day or so. meteorologist sandhya patel here with the forecast. >> dan and kristen, the low clouds all across the bay our natural ac is working. it's breezy out here. let me show you live doppler 7 hd. we'll have our summer

microclimates like we did today. temperatures did dip today thanks to the stronger sea breeze andling erg fog as you see on live doppler 7 hd. in case you're heading to the beach to just enjoy some more comfortable weather as opposed to the heat, just keep in mind that we do have a higher risk of strong rip currents through thursday evening and large breakers as well. so beach hazard statement remains up along the entire coastline. speaking of, here is a live look from our santa cruz cam where had some people are enjoying the beach there with the low clouds in the background. low to mid 60s san francisco oak lantd, you 74 in mt. view, 79 in san jose half moon bay a cool 57 degrees. high clouds filtders the sun from our san jose camera, temperatures in the 70s from santa rosa to napa, 89 in livermore. i lovely view from the emeryville camera where we seed low he clouds racing back. by the way, today's highs so far upper 50s to the coast all the way to the low 100s inland. foggy areas again in the morning temperatures will rebound tomorrow and we're looking at triple digit heat friday and

saturday inland that is. from our mt. tam cam you can see the marine layer there our air quality will suffer as that heat builds. poor air quality for thursday and friday for parts of the bay area the first spare the air of the season has been declared for tomorrow. just keep that in mind. you'll notice the air quality does improve for the second half the weekend as we cool it down. first thing in the morning we'll have all the fog around like we did this morning temperatures will be in the 50s watch out for the fog it could be on the thick side across parts of the bay area especially along the coast. the fog will stick around at 9:00 a.m. near the beaches and then eventually you will seed clearing but don't worry it's not going to get hot near the beaches because of the continuation of a nice sea breeze. tomorrow afternoon temperatures are coming up inland 90 wub in gilr gilroy, 90 in san jose 87 sunnyvale 89 in cant lara on the peninsula mid 80s for men loo park redwood city 80 in san ma te'i know. need the sun korean, 62 in half moon day, daly city 63, downtown

governor brown and state lawmakers will get a pretty nice raise. today the citizen compensation commission unanimously approved a 4% salary and benefits increase for the governor and other elected officials. the commission's chairman says despite the increase lawmakers' salaries are still less than they were before the recession started. governor broin will make about $190,000 a year. lawmakers about $104,000. they can reject the raises if they choose to do so. a dramatic fall for the founder of a palo alto biotech company facing several federal investigations. forbes magazine is reporting that elizabeth holmes is now estimated to have a net worth of zero. she led vice president biden on a tour of her company last july. today's report comes a day or a year after a year she topped the forbes list of america's richest self-made women with a net worth of $4.5 billion. her value has plum etded after
