ground. a massive manhunt is underway tonight in the east bay. heavily armed s.w.a.t officers are looking for the gunman who opened fire on two police officers. >> the cops are chasing this guy and then they shot him. poo-poo-poo. >> thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz president. >> i'm dan ashley. both of those officers are still in the hospital. it started nine and a half hours ago in fremont near washington and fremont bowel vardz. >> we -- fremont boulevard. >> we will start with cornell bernard. cornell? >> reporter: ama and dan, one officer in critical condition and the other is in stable. the manhunt for the shooter continues tonight. the neighbors are told to shelter in place. a search through the neighborhood has been concentrated to an area not far from here where officers believe where the suspect may be hiding.

a manhunt in the neighborhood. s.w.a.t team members left no stone unturned in the search for an armed suspect. sometimes breaking down fences and gates, any hiding place. neighbors were told to keep their doors locked and others told to stay away. >> this is our home and this is where we live. it is terrifying. >> they even used a drone to search the backyards. >> this is a dangerous individual. it has shown the propensity to do violence and hurt police officers. >> they tried to make a traffic stop on this white truck behind an auto zone store. the suspect backed into the officer's vehicle. >> the guy ended up getting out of the car. the officer was telling them be still and don't move. they exchanged shots. the officer was hit. >> he took off running to the safeway store and this witness noticed he was bleeding m. >> so he was shot?

>> yes, he was shot i think. >> the suspect is on the run again. over a fence and on to roberts' avenue. a second officer was wounded. >> they were shooting, poo poop-poop-poop. >> they came to aid in the search. a law enforcement community praying for the officer's recovery. neighbors want the dangerous suspect caught. >> he can hurt anybody. i am praying everybody is okay and the officers lived. >> he is described as a hispanic man, sikh feet tall -- six feet tall and a shaved head and mustache. fremont may consider can selling school in the area. they have not made a decision, but we will have the latest beginning tomorrow morning on the abc7 morning news. live in fremont, cornell bernard, abc7.

>> all right. >> now within moments of this afternoon's shooting the firefighters and the paramedics rushed to save the injured officers. >> yeah, there were two officers involved. we transported one and we want to make sure they know is it incoming. >> as we just heard a medical supervisor say they didn't wait for an ambulance to arrivet the shooting scene. they drove their injured co-worker to the hospital and that's where we find lilian kim. >> she is live at san jose renale national center. >> there has been a constant police presence since the two officers arrived here at regional medical center. at least a couple dozen officer from the neighboring law enforcement agencies are keeping vigil to offer their support. in addition to officers from fremont pd we can see members from san leandro and it is calm and quiet now, but earlier it was a frantic scene. they arrived with lights and sirens on and

they are bringing a friend and family member. she was driven in by police and escorted inside. the officer in critical condition was shot once and the officer in stable condition was shot twice. we spoke with the mayor of fremont as he was leaving the hospital and he is asking everybody to keep these two officers in their thoughts and prayers. >> this is what every mayor dreads is when you hear there is an officer involved shooting. of course that's when officers are victims of the crime itself. we are all praying right now and we hope both officers will be okay. >> here is one of the officers being given aid. they haven't released their name, but the officer in critical condition has been with the department one year while the detective in stable condition has been with the department for 10 years. live in san jose, lilian kim, abc7 news. >> thank you. if there are any new

initial report before screening the video. some felt the policy wastoo vague. six months from now they will check on how the rollout is going. it is not clear how quickly every officer will get a body camera. an expanding sinkhole has shutdown both sections of i-5 south of tracy. look at this thing. the hole opened up yesterday morning on the shoulder. it was only a foot wide at the time and now spans two lanes. it grew quickly. they believe an abandoned irrigation pipeline may be to blame here. the highway will not reopen until friday evening. in the meantime traffic is being diverted on to highway 33. there are just six days left until the primary and all the candidates are focused on the golden state. katie is live in the newsroom with more. >> donald trump thrilled supporters with his familiar message about making america great again.

francisco, east bay and all the bay area, this is abc7 news. >> the soip for -- the search for dry land is reaching critical levels in texas where it has pushed the river to historic levels. you can see they are barely able to keep their heads above water. this is west of houston. rescues are underway and helicopters are dropping food to the stranded animals. more rain, however, is expected for already drenched parts of texas. moving now to the stanley cup final. the sharks are in an over time thriller in pittsburgh as they netted the game winning goal. the penguins have the lead in the stanley cup final. game 3 takes place in san jose. wayne freedman is in pittsburgh tonight. >> just before game two the

and you can see what happened this evening. the marine layer really made a good push and that has been responsible for our cooler weather today. and this is what's going to keep the coast quite comfortable tomorrow. the fog will be around first thing in the morning and lingering into the afternoon. live doppler 7hd is showing you the fog has made the push into santa rosa. it is not just confined to the coast and it is tens dense in spots. the visibility is down to a half mile. it just updated. tomorrow morning the commute may take longer because of the fog brentwood is at 70 degrees. here is what you need to know if you are heading away from the hot weather. rip current risk tomorrow evening. the beach hazard statement was up for the entire coastline through thur evening. this is something you don't want to take lightly especially if you are taking little ones to the coastline.

you can see the top of the bay bridge obscured by the fog and here is a look at what is ahead. foggy areas in the morning. temperatures rebound with the triple digit heat. we will see a result of the hot weather the air quality becoming poor in the inland east bay. a spare the air alert has been issued. it is the first of the season and it is for tomorrow. you wl notice poor air quality and i wouldn't be surprised if they issue another one for friday. temperatures begin in the 50s and so good sleeping weather for most of you. the fog will be around at the coast and the bay. and then as we head toward the latter part of the morning watch what happens. by about 9:00 a.m. the fog pulls out of the bayside communities. it is sitting near the coast. and it doesn't quite completely clear at 3:00 in the afternoon from san francisco and right along the san mateo coast. a warm day in the south bay and away from the marine

influence. 90 in san jose and itch -- and 85 in redwood city. a nice day along the coast but it will keep it in the low 60s. in the north bay we will see the temperatureses coast side. pretty warm elsewhere. 90 santa rosa and 83 in san rafael. in the east bay, 78 in oakland and 80 in hayward. inland spots, you are cooking. 96 in fair field and 99 in antioch. a look at the seven-day forecast and low 60s to upper 90s tomorrow. triple digits inland. 70s at the coast and we will hang on for one more day. mid60s coast side. the temperatures do begin to fall for the second half of your weekend. some relief is coming. by next week you can pretty
