>> announcer: live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good afternoon, and thank you for joining us today. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. >> reporter: i'm larry biel live at oracle. we're getting ready for game one in the nba finals, warriors/cavs, a live report is straight ahead. >> we're going to begin with the shooting of two officers one critically injured in fremont. >> yes. the suspect accused of shooting those two died overnight. the cause of death has not been released but the home on roberts avenue caught fire early this morning after officers used tear gas to try to get him out. >> now, police say it all started when they tried to pull over 44-year-old gerald volunteevibray. >> vic lee joins us live from

free monlt. vic? >> reporter: well, ama, first of all, the pifrt r person who shot this video told us that he's already talked to fremont police and that he's turned over this video to investigators. video that shows the suspect cold-bloodedly shooting the officer. in this video, of course, very graphic, very disturbing, and we of course have blurred the officer's face. an officer who is in critical condition. police say the suspect shot the first officer after ramming his patrol car. the officer pulled him over for a traffic stop near the auto zone store on fremont and washington boulevard. video obtained by abc 7 news shows the officer already out of the patrol car shouting repeatedly for the suspect identified as gerald vilabril to get his hands up. words are exchanged. the officer seems to give the suspect the benefit of the doubt. he waits. then shots are exchanged, three distinct rounds and the officer

collapses on the ground. the suspect darts away down fremont boulevard. 'peers to be bleeding from the back. meantime a man and woman get out of the suspect's truck and calmly walk away from the krayem seen. it's now 50 seconds since the suspect ran from the first shooting. he rushes back to the crime scene and tries unsuccessfully to scale a fence in the back. in his desperation he pulls down a chunk of the fence and disappears into the neighborhood. a split second later, responding officers appear. you can see them rushing to their fallen comrade before fanning out looking for the suspect. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> our team coverage continues with abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen live at the regional medical center of san jose. chris? >> reporter: dan, one officer remains in critical condition, the second officer stable. he is conscious and able to talk. if you take a look behind me, you can see some of the police cars that have been out here in front of the hospital throughout the afternoon. that has been the common scene.

he w as we take a look at video show, police officers from multiple agencies have been stopping by to had show their support for he fremont police department. we've so some of the officers may have been involved in the standoff overnight. now, about an hour ago, police released new details about the standoff on roberts avenue that led to the suspect's death. we learned gerald vilabrila shot out a lock on a random house to get inside. fortunately nobody was home. once inside, police tried to get the suspect to speak to them. he refused so they fired tear gas into the home. the suspect then called 911 and initially told police he had a hostage. however, officers later determined there was no hostage inside and continued negotiat n negotiations for several hours before firing a second round of tear gas into the home. that second round is what started the fire. >> we made rescue attempts, repeated rescue attempts, to get into the house, but he had

barricaded himself into a location that we were unable to safely get to. >> reporter: the suspect's body was found inside the burned home. police also recovered the gun that they believe he used to shoot the two officers. now, as for the couple who owns the home, they came back during the siege but were kept away by police for obvious reasons. unfortunately, though, the family dog was inside the home as it burned. we're live this afternoon, i'm chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> chris, thank you. now, stay with abc 7 news for continuing coverage on the fremont shooting. we'll bring you updates as they come in and you can get them on your phone as well the moment they happen with our free abc 7 news app. today jurors recommended the death penalty for a man who killed an 8-year-old girl at a sleep-over in oakland. in 2013 darnell williams hang a doorbell on a home on wilson avenue. when the door opened he shot alicia carradine. two months later, williams shot

and killed 22 year aeld anthony maderas during a robbery in berkeley. in september, a judge will decide if the jury's death penalty decision should stand. major new developments today in the murder/suicide at ucla yesterday. investigators say the gun man mainak sar kerr left behind a hit list that led them to another victim. authorities many minnesota found a woman shot to death. public records show that home is owned by a woman sarkar married in 2011 it's unclear if she and sarkar were still married. another person on the list, 39-year-old professor william including was killed yesterday inside a you ucla engineering department. the name of a second ucla professor also appeared on this list. that professor was unharmed, possibly only because he did not work yesterday. sarkar earned his phd in 2013 and received his masters in 2005. a lawyer for the family of a man shot and killed while working on an anti-violence in

oakland filed a federal complaint today against u.s. immigration and enforcement. the man who killed antonio ramos used a gun stolen from the i.c.e. agent's car. marquis holloway says he shot ramos to take the camera he had. i.c.e. had no comment on the lawsuit. family and friends of gun violence victims marched to nearly 200 cities today rallying for stricter gun laws. >> jonathan bloom explains to us kbr the golden gate bridge was even more orange than usual for national gun violence awareness day. >> reporter: gathered in the morning fog, a sea of orange. >> hunters wear orange to say, don't shoot me. that's why orange has been embraced as the color for gun violence prevention. >> reporter: started by a teenage shooting victim's friends in chicago it's now a movement. >> no more handgun violence. >> reporter: embraced by the lieutenant governor. >> the fact that we have a society that accepts 150 mass

school shootings since newtown is the biggest challenge, the normalization. >> reporter: but thinking mass shootings are a way of life is not okay with paulette brown, she's been picketing city hall since gavin newsom was mayor over the death of had her son. >> 30 rounds of bullets went into my son. to this day, his case isn't solve. >> reporter: nicole lost her daughter six months ago in this richmond shooting. >>? type of military gun, something crazy where i feel like how do these guns get on the streets? >> reporter: the marchers want stricter laws. gun rights groups oppose the renorms, newsom insists they're the minority. >> the nra is potent and powerful and they need to be taken off. >> translator: at the golden gate bridge. today a judge sentenced former stanford swimmer brock turner to six months in jail for sexually assaulting a woman who was unconscious and intoxicated.

today because when we came into the arena it was pitch black and john legend is rehearsing the national anthem. so the players had to warm up in darkness. this was the scene this morning as the assistant coaches were doing some push-ups there, steph curry getting his shots up. warriors looking loose early in the day. last year they were in awe of the bright lights. this year draymond green says the team is much more prepared. >> we've just got to come out and play with energy from the start. i think even last year in the finals during the whole thing about the finals where everything is just so much different, it kind of got us. but now we know what to expect, everything feels a little more normal now, you know. so that will be key for us coming out, guns blazing to start the series. >> reporter: i don't know if it will feel normal in a couple of hours as you can feel all the dignitaries and everybody here. there's just a crush of media. it's not going to be that normal. now, the warriors have a message for fans they want everybody to come in early because they want

in developing news, you're looking at new video of a blue angels fighter jet moments after it crashed near nashville today. you can see the flames and smoke that followed that impact. officials say the pilot died immediately. the crash happened while the team was practicing for a weekend air show. no one on the ground was hurt. the blue angels are expected to perform at fleet week in san francisco this october. and an air force thunder bird jet also crashed just after a flyover for the graduation of air force academy cadets, just after president obama spoke. the pilot ejected. the president met with him and thanked him for his service. well, there is new information today on the death of prince. the cause was an accidental opioid overdose. the report from the medical examiner's office fent-- a drugt

even higher. but before we get to that, here is a live look from sutro tower on this sunny afternoon. these are our forecast features, coastal fog will expand overnight. we'll see triple digit heat in some inland areas tomorrow and perhaps again on saturday. a cooler pattern will develop on sunday. overnight, look for fog along the coast spilling locally out over the bay. low temperatures will be in the mid to upper 50s. let's look at our fog forecast animation. starting at midnight, notice how expanse and deep the coastal fog becomes. by 6:00 a.m., a little bit of it will have pushed through san francisco across the bay locally to places like richmond and oakland, could reduce visibility for early morning commuters just a bit. but as we continue into the day, we will see the fog pulling back to the coastline by about noon, giving us mainly sunny skies across the region and a warm he day than today. even land highs toem will reach or exceed 100 at concord, livermore, 99 at fairfield, 90

his flight to san francisco. william thomas is in the city from baltimore for a conference. he believes his wheelchair was damaged during a connecting flight through detroit. right now there is some kind of hitch making it hard for him to move around. he says delta needs to fix or replace his costly chair. >> i need my chair. this is my livelihood. i mean, i'm pretty much stuck without it. and this is not a cheap chair. i mean, this is is an active lifestyle chair, custom made. i'm 6'5", 220 pounds. >> in a short statement this afternoon to abc 7 news, delta airlines told us they are working directly with thomas. in the race for the white house, republican donald trump will be holding a rally tonight at the san jose convention center. sky7 hd flew over the area early this morning to check it out. his event is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. around 15,000 people are expected to attend. speaker of the house paul ryan officially endorsed donald trump today. he posted on twitter that he
