welcome to "world news tonight." breaking news. millions bracing for dangerous weather. a massive storm system marching across the east. major cities on alert. rain, strong winds, and possible tornadoes. and now, a new tropical threat tonight. forced to flee. a fast-moving wildfire. mandatory evacuations. crews battling to save homes. including those multi-million dollar mansions owned by hollywood celebrities. vicious blows? as the body of muhammad ali returns to kentucky, the question tonight. did boxing contribute to his parkinson's disease? race mistake? donald trump saying a mexican-american judge is biased against him, and a muslim judge would be as well. denying that's racism, calling it just "common sense." and, pressure to win.

game two. will the cavs even the score? we go one-on-one with the warriors' steph curry. good evening. thanks for joining us on this sunday. i'm tom llamas. as we come on the air, more than 60 million people under a weather threat, as dangerous and damaging storms move across the east. and now a tropical storm in the gulf. in the west, a tornado in webster, indiana. stormy weather hitting texas first. more rain this weekend near houston adding to the flooding disaster there. the maps show the effect on some of the country's biggest cities. and rob marciano is standing by. but first, eva pilgrim will start us off. >> reporter: the system taking aim at the east coast right now, already spawning this tornado in

indiana and leaving destruction in its path in iowa. a shed ripped to pieces, scattered across this field. in western pennsylvania, high water trapping people inside their homes this weekend. their only way out on a rescue boat. in the south, a funnel cloud in mississippi. mother nature lighting up the georgia sky. strong winds pulling up trees and snapping them in half. and in flood-plagued texas tonight, army officials now identifying eight of the nine soldiers killed when flood waters swept their tactical vehicle off the road. among the dead, a staff sergeant serving four tours in iraq and afghanistan, a west point graduate and 20-year-old private rae'laurin gates. >> she was just such a beautiful, beautiful young lady and it just grieves me to my heart to know this has happened. >> reporter: texas finally getting a much-needed break from the rain, but not before eight

inches came pouring down in just three hours' time in houston. homeowners still not able to go home, but trying to get a glimpse of what's left. >> i want to see if there's something i can salvage and i just can't go inside the house. >> reporter: these storms pushing east towards major cities. a severe thunderstorm watch in effect from charlotte, north carolina, to new york. some of the weather weather, expected here in pennsylvania. tom? >> eva, thank you. rob marciano joins us. and the storm, right over philly and new york? >> yes, just crossed the delaware river. winds over 60 miles an hour. the pink, the severe thunderstorm watch. severe weather, hail, tornado, not out of the question. this pushes to the east overnight tonight. by 7:00 a.m., it's pretty much clear. but the southeast could see some storms still.

colin should make landfall tomorrow. about 450 miles southwest of tampa. should make landfall sometime tomorrow. but to the east, that's where the impact will be. the third named storm so far this year, the earliest on record. >> rob, thanks so much. in the west, extreme heat fueling a wildfire near los angeles. as thousands fled their homes. tonight, some of the evacuation orders have been lifted, but but the fires are still burning. here's lauren lyster. >> reporter: tonight, it is all hands on deck in these california hills after fast-moving flames forced residents out of their homes in the middle of the night. >> it's very hazardous work down there. >> reporter: 3,700 evacuated, 500 acres charred so far and the fire now 75% contained. helicopters have been dropping water on the hills all day, but officials saying it's going to take boots on the ground with

shovels and hoses to really make sure this fire's out. 400 firefighters tackling the blaze on foot. fending off flames. witnesses say a truck slammed into this power pole, knocking it down, a transformer exploding, sparking the fire. some residents still being kept from their homes. do you know when you get to go back home? >> no. >> reporter: how does that make you feel? >> uncomfortable. >> reporter: others, like the man who shot this video, taking a sigh of relief tonight. the fire skipping his family's home. >> there were flames in the trees, coming up to the asphalt. i felt like i was driving through hell. >> reporter: the town's famous residents, the kardashians, also rattled by the flames. >> we were born and raised in calabasas. there's the fire next to my house. >> reporter: take a look. you can see where the fire is contained. the contrast of ash and brush. not helping fire crews, though, the heat and five-year drought in california turning this area into a tinderbox.

tom? >> lauren, thank you. we now turn to muhammad ali. a short time ago, a plane touching down louisville, where his funeral will take place later this week. here's ryan smith. >> reporter: tonight, a solemn procession, through his hometown. a memorial mirrors the sorrow. words of love and loss, mourners of all generations coming to salute their hero. ali's brother rahman becoming emotional. the funeral's details planned by ali himself. thursday's private service for immediate family followed by a massive public tribute on friday. a funeral procession will go down muhammad ali boulevard, then an interfaith memorial service. former president bill clinton and billy crystal to deliver eulogies. ali, especially fond of crystal's impersonations, this one at the champ's 50th birthday party. >> i'm still so fast i can turn

out the lights in my bedroom and get into bed before the room gets dark. >> reporter: fans and friends tonight, packing his childhood home, now a museum, catching a glimpse of his humble beginnings. what did he mean not only to louisville but to african-american and black folks all over the world? >> to be honest with you, man, he means everything. he means hope, he means, yes i can, he means, oh, wow, this is true. >> reporter: the outpouring reaches far beyond his hometown. >> when he said he was the greatest, he was speaking for a whole generation of black americans that didn't get the opportunities they felt they deserved. i felt i was standing with someone that was a giant. >> reporter: tonight, an interfaith service will be held at a local mosque in what will be a week long farewell to the champ. tom? >> ryan, thank you. muhammad ali's longest bout was with parkinson's disease. as his health failed, his boxing magic faded as well.

tonight, so many asking, is there a connection between a career in the boxing ring and the debilitating illness he suffered? jim avila, on that part of the story tonight. >> reporter: this is the last video of muhammad ali in public at a charity event in april. 30 years of parkinson's, a disease that damages the part of the brain involved in movement. inflicting tremendous havoc on the champ and causing his public to wonder if there is a link between the hits in the ring and the disease that led to his death. >> i think it's quite clear that beatings in the ring will make your brain quite damaged in terms of the inflammation, and then over time, it's more likely you get a disease like parkinson's. >> reporter: when i first met ali in the mid-1980s in chicago, he was in his 40s and had just been diagnosed. just his right arm trembled. three decades later, he couldn't walk or talk. >> he was diagnosed at age 40, suggesting something had

happened. either he had a strong genetic link, or that he had been damaged like through head injury. >> reporter: when ali was young, he was almost unhittable, but his later fights were brutal. frazier nearly killed him. norton broke his jaw with one punch, foreman pounded him in the famous rumble in the jungle. and today he marvels at ali's determination to take a punch and perhaps unwisely get up for more. >> you could hit him where you hit everyone else, but he was not willing to fall, not willing to be counted out. >> reporter: a brain autopsy would determine if he suffered other brain damage. but it's clear he already suffered from parkinson's disease. the family has not disclosed whether his brain will be donated to research. tom? >> thank you. breaking news, an american journalist has been killed in a rocket attack in afghanistan. while covering it for national public radio. here's alex marquardt.

>> reporter: the devastating news came in tonight. the npr team had been travelling through afghanistan's dangerous southern helmand province. the car carrying award-winning his interpreter was hit by shell fire. both were killed. npr correspondent tom bowman, who covers the pentagon, was in another car. tonight, we are told he is safe and unharmed. the pair was back in afghanistan, where they'd been many times to cover america's longest war. this attack, a dark reminder of the ever-present dangers faced by not just those fighting, but reporting as well. gilkey had covered major stories around the world, from gaza to the philippines to haiti. >> i mean, it's hard, but you can't get caught up in it and become part of it. you still need to maintain your state of mind that you are helping tell this story. >> reporter: in 2011, the white house photographers' association named gilkey still photographer of the year. and an investigation on veterans and brain injuries won him the

coveted george polk award. david gilkey is being remembered tonight not just as a globe-trotting and talent ed photographer, but for the courage he displayed, and the passion he brought to each story. tom? >> thank you. and in iraq, officials say they have taken back areas around fallujah. an isis stronghold. the u.s. has been supporting the two-week assault with air strikes. the center of fallujah is still out of reach, because isis is using tens of thousands of civilians that live there as human shields. back at home, a police officer killed while on-duty. officer smith, a 18-year veteran of the force, and a father of three. struck on the street by a suspect trying to get away after allegedly shooting three people. tonight, that suspect is facing

multiple charges, including first degree murder. we move on to politics. two days to major primaries that could determine the democratic nominee. hillary clinton still being challenged by bernie sanders. this, as donald trump is refusing to back down on the claim that a mexican-american judge is biased against him, tonight going even further. here's david wright, on the campaign trail. >> reporter: tonight, donald trump is expanding on his notion of judicial bias. that a federal judge should be disqualified because of his ancestry. >> he's a member of a club or society, very pro-mexican. which is all fine. but i said he's got bias. i want to build a wall. >> reporter: when cbs pressed him, he went even further. >> if he was a muslim judge, would you also feel like they wouldn't be able to treat you

fairly? >> it's possible. yes. that would be possible, absolutely. >> isn't there a tradition in america where you don't judge people from where their parents came from? >> i'm not talking about tradition. i'm talking about common sense, okay? >> reporter: common sense, maybe. but not to even members of his own party. >> he was born in america. -- indiana. he's american, period. >> he's trying to take attention from the very serious fraud charges against trump university. >> reporter: hillary clinton now on the verge of clinching the democratic nomination. but -- >> we're going to go into the democratic convention with enormous momentum. >> reporter: she's at risk of losing here in california. the polls show clinton and sanders neck and neck. if clinton loses here, it could set the stage for a bruising fight at the convention.

old age and rot and disrepair. just wasn't maintained properly. >> reporter: injuries from deck collapses sending 4,600 people to the emergency room over the last decade. in 2013, two dozen crashing down from this deck in indiana. and before that, a disastrous prom photo op. >> at this time, roll them. yes, ma'am, i need all the ambulances i can get. >> reporter: and last summer, 24 family members injured in this north carolina deck collapse. there are 40 million residential decks in the u.s. many, more than 20 years old. experts warning, look for rot and water damage. check for missing screws or weak support joints. >> if you're on a deck or balcony or a terrace and you sway back and forth and that moves with you, that's a real problem. >> reporter: experts recommend deck owners get them checked once a year. here in new york, a building inspection has been ordered. and a citation issued. we checked records, and prior to
