mystery involving identical twin sisters. best friends and struggling yoga teachers who moved to maui to start a new life. after driving off a cliff one of them is dead and the other targeted by prosecutors. hours ago, a major new wrinkle, however, and here's abc's kana wit worth. >> they were truly living in paradise. identical twin yoga instructors. >> together we're weaving threads of self-love, self-acceptance. >> reporter: cruising maui's beautiful coastal highway along the scenic and dangerous road to hahn in a, but then a tragic turn. >> it's white ford explorer on a steep cliff. >> one behind the wheel and the other in the passenger seat when the car slammed into a wall and went off a cliff crashing on the

rocky shore below. >> they got to the crash very quickly, and acted very quickly to rescue the survivor. >> reporter: one air lifted out, surviving with minor injuries. >> she sustained a few rib fractured. her arm was in a sling. she's able to walk. it's really a miracle that she is here today. >> reporter: but her twin, according to rescuers was found mangled in the backseat, pronounced dead at the scene. >> we have two patients. one is pulseless and unresponsi unresponsive. >> reporter: it looked like an accident, but prosecutors accused one of killing her sister intentionally by driving them both off a cliff. >> everyone standing around saw her take the explorer off the cliff with her sister beside her, plummeting them to a death. she survives with her air bag

and her safety belt while her sister dies a horrible death. >> reporter: authorities said the car's data recorder indicated she was accelerating right before the crash and never applied the brakes. a key point of dispute if this goes to trial. >> the defense is clearly going to be they were in an argument. she got distracted by her sister who was attacking her in the car, and the car went off the cliff. this is a real and viable defense. >> reporter: eyewitnesss say they saw the blonds physically fighting in the vehicle just before it happened. >> i could see a pair of hands yanking on the driver's head,s and she was arguing with the person. >> reporter: the ordeal seeming like a scene ripped right out of magnum p.i. but hours ago after hearing testimony from witnesses and a vehicle expert, a judge in maui

found no probable cause, saying she was free to go. prosecutors say they're considering all options at this point. we believe a crime has been committed. we will use whatever means we have in the law to bring her to justice. perhaps a sigh of relief for the twin who had been facing charges of second degree murder and has spent almost a week in jail arrested of investigators say she was trying to flee the islands. her lawyer says she was never trying to evade the law. she had planned a trip to new york to grieve with her family and is struggling with the loss of her sister. >> it's tough. her sister was the closest person in the world to her, and to come to grips with that person not being here anymore has been incredibly emotionally draining for her. >> shrug your shoulders away. get strong in your quadricep muscles. >> reporter: they seemed to have it all.

successful owners of a yoga studio in florida. >> both of them, absolutely gorgeous. they're built like a brick house. they're expert yoga instructors. >> we love the energy. west palm beach is the heart beat. our tag line is power the body, power the soul. >> reporter: once considered best friends, they once went by alison and ann. they were living it up in florida with twin porches. >> they wanted to be society types. they showed up in parties where people were there to raise money for charity. they were trying to blend in. >> reporter: according to reports, the pair's relationship had grown tense when they hit financial troubles. >> it was a surprise. they were considered as being pretty successful, but i think success got to their heads. for example, they bought matching porches. that's a lot of money, and they

didn't pay some of that stuff. >> reporter: the yoga studios shutting down without warning in 2014 leaving employees unpaid and leaving students with worthless prepaid memberships. >> i got calls saying they went to open up the studio and everything was gone. >> reporter: she worked at the studio. she said the twins often seemed unstable. >> they were all over the place. one minute they were calm and nice. the next minute they were all over calling and wanting to know different questions and one didn't know what the other one was doing. it ended up being chaotic most of the time. >> reporter: they vanished, reemerging with new identities in utah, opening a new studio in up scale park city, and telling the park record we wanted the studio who reflect love and light. that is the goal of our practice.

it is a physical practice with a touch of spirituality. their new life didn't last long. ann filing for bankruptcy in december of 2014. in debt for hundreds of thousands of dollars. from florida to utah, the pair had multiple run ins with the law. alison having previously been conducted of fraud, disorderly conduct and property damage, ann was convicted with disorderly conduct and battery. their next stop was hawaii, a new set of names, alison now known as alexandria and ann going by their troubles followed them. on christmas eve the sisters were cited for disorderly contact with a bench warrant ordered for their arrest after

month sentence for sexually assaulting a young woman. her open statement in court went viral, and tonight we have new pictures and texts that show the defendant in a harsh new light. here's abc's matt gutman with an exclusive. >> reporter: the public outcry over a six month sentence over a former stanford university freshman for assaulting a woman while she lay unconscious next to a dumpster last year. >> the judge is saying it doesn't matter your past action. don't do it again. >> we were outraged. >> we were disappointed. my office was completely disappointed in that sentence. >> reporter: the victim's identity has been concealed. we've come to know her through her words. >> see if she can speak an entire sentence. >> to give her a voice, we asked women who say they've survived sexual assault and rape to read

the impact letter she read to her assailant. >> reporter: it's gone viral with nearly 12 million clicks since it was posted on buzz feed. her first person account of her ordeal, raw and unfiltered. in his letter, the assailant said coming from a small town in ohio i never really expeerntdsed celebrating or partying that involved alcohol. he said he denied ever using illicit substances. prosecutors didn't believe that. alleging he was engaging in excessive drinking and using drugs, according to prosecutors who combed through his phone. here turner is seen with what appears to be a hash pipe before college, say prosecutors, who co-lated dozens of text messages where he says about buying or

using drugs, including harder drugs. want to see if we can get acid? the documents show he was, according to prosecutors, similarly aggressive with another female at a different fraternity party at the same location. weighing all of this was judge aaron persky, former la crosse captain at the school who handed down a six month sentence. turner is slated to be released from jail after three months for good behavior. >> what was the judge thinking? i don't know what he was thinking. i know what we can do about it. we can try to get him off the bench. >> reporter: there are now two petitions to recall persky. a change.org petition garnered more than half a million significants and a white house petition posted just this morning has already surpassed 27,000tur 27,000tures. the co-founder of association of students for sexual assault prevention also authored a letter signed by over 250

stanford students to the judge asking for a tough sentence. >> we didn't know if the letter would help or not, but the main thing is that we want to take action in any way, shape, or form possible to help the situation. >> a stanford law professor started a campaign calling for judge persky to be removed from the court. >> he is an elected, not appointed judge, and he is -- needs to be responsive to community values, and he has to both understand where the community is with respect to sexual assault and the need to protect our daughters while they're in college. >> reporter: persky is not only being threatened with votes but allegedly with violence. gary goodman says persky and his family have received threats over the phone. can you give me a sense of what's being said in the calls? >> they're threatening. they use a lot of profanity. they hope that he dies. they hope his kids get raped. things of that nature.

>> in this case, six months in jail and six offender status and three months probation. was that fair? >> absolutely in line. >> reporter: that sexual assault happened in a january night on 2015. >> it's hard to see at first. it's a violent thing. >> reporter: the graduate students were riding their bikes and stopped when they saw two people on the ground near a dumpster. what makes you suspicious of what's going on there? >> she wasn't moving. >> reporter: it was clear? >> yeah. >> reporter: and the man on top of her was? >> yeah. my friend said what the [ bleep ] are you doing. he later said i didn't do anything. it's a trap, when he was laying on the ground. and he tried to seem like nothing happened. >> reporter: emily doe recounts

my breasts had been groped fingers had been jabbed inside me along with pine sneads. when turner made a raun for it, they ran after him and pinned him to the ground. when you saw her lying on the ground, was it pretty obvious who had happened? >> yeah. she was half naked. >> reporter: they haven't seen emily doe since that night, but it's clear from her letter that she thinks about them every day. she writes i sleep with two bicycles that i drew taped above my bed to remind myself there are heros. brock's father said it's a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action. >> 20 minutes for a lifetime of sentence. i'm like what do you think the woman had to deal with? he's claiming his words were misinterpreted. any association with brock turner has become radio active.

in a letter turner's friend, the drummer for the band good english lamented the assault may have been a big misunderstanding. the backlash was neck snapping. within days her band's next four shows were cancelled. in a post to facebook she wrote, i did not acknowledge strongly enough the severity of brock's crime and the suffering and pain his victim endured. for that lack of acknowledgment, i'm deeply sorry. emily doe has chose ton remain silent and anonymous. in response to the outcry this week, she did send a text message to the prosecutor to read. >> i don't need labels to pruf i should be listened to. i'm coming to you as a woman wanting to be heard. there's plenty more i'd like to tell you about me. for now, i'm every woman. >> matt gutman in california. >> next, something entirely

while i was on a combat patrol my c in baqubah, iraq,nned out. a rocket-propelled grenade took my arm off at the shoulder. when i came home, i felt alone. my family was around me, but i couldn't talk to them about what i'd seen and what i'd done. i remember just thinking, man, the way i am right now, i don't want to live. i was discharged from the army, and i've been working with the wounded warrior project since 2007. warriors don't have to be severely wounded to be with the wounded warrior project. we do have a lot of guys that have post-traumatic stress disorder. being able to share your story, i guess it kind of helps you wrap your mind around what did happen over there. just because you've left the military doesn't mean your life is over, because when these guys are coming home, i'm kind of leading and training them, instead of for combat, i'm leading and training them to heal. and if i come away with anything from the wounded warrior project, it's them giving my life back. my name is norbie, and yes, i do suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder,
