over the sentencing of a former stanford university swimmer convicted of campus sexual assault. >> now vice president joe biden is adding his voice to the growing chorus of outrage as we learn new details about the athlete's background. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: the vice president opened his letter echoing the sentiment of millions. writing, "i do not know your name, but your words are forever seared on my soul." the victim's letter, clicked on nearly 14 million times, describes in raw detail her sexual assault by former stanford swimmer brock turner. "i am filled with furious anger," biden wrote, "both that this happened to you and that our culture is still so broken that you were ever put in the position of defending your own worth." adding, "and while the justice system has spoken in your particular case, the nation is not satisfied." national outrage reaching a fever pitch. this banner hanging off an l.a. freeway. and a petition to recall the judge in the case signed by nearly a million people. all this as more details emerge

about another side of brock turner whose lawyers say he denied ever using any illicit substances. but in a sentencing brief submitted to the judge and obtained by abc news, the prosecution says texts and photos found on his phone show excessive drinking and using drugs including this photo prosecutors say is turner with a pipe. a second photo in the prosecution's brief which we misidentified as turner holding a bong was in fact another student turner had on his phone. in one text sent the summer before college turner writes, dude, i did acidlast week. the judge weighed all of that and still decided on that six-month sentence. we already know that turner will be out on september 2nd. that is after serving just three months of that six-month sentence. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. >> still a very heated case. you know, before it though, this judge has 13 years behind the bench without controversy. >> and as a result of all of

this, now he's getting some death threats. but there is that petition to recall him. i just checked. it now has more than a million signatures. >> even the public defender on this case said despite what you may think about the sentencing which obviously he didn't agree with, he said that he doesn't think that the judge should be recalled. he says there can be public outrage but you don't want people recalling judges because they don't support the way they do their jobs. he followed his job lawfully. when we can come back, what president obama said to jimmy fallon about his new smartphone. and how justin bieber got into trouble again with his fists. good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top stories we're following for you this morning on "world news now." tens of thousands of fans, family and dignitaries are expected to come out to say a final good-bye to muhammad ali. yesterday, ali's body arrived at the arena in his hometown of louisville. today there will also be a 19-mile procession through the town. we have full details ahead. in libya, pro government forces are moving into the city of sirte. that is the islamic state's only strong hold outside of syria and iraq. loss of the city would be a major setback for isis but its fighters are showing remarkable little resistance. hundreds of arizona residents have been evacuated as a brush fire threatens their homes. the fire in yarnell has already scorched 1300 acres and destroyed three structures.

from the ali family learning some of the tickets are being scalped online, some posted for hundreds of dollars. >> it is deplorable that some people are trying to profit off of the solemn service as we celebrate the life of muhammad ali. >> reporter: scalping is illegal here and that family spokesperson says they're now working to have all of those ticket posts taken offline. marci gonzalez, abc news, louisville. we're going to turn our focus now to the race for the president and signs that the democratic party is quickly getting behind hillary clinton. she, of course, is the presumptive nominee getting high profile endorsements. >> including elizabeth warren who has broad support among progressive democrats. she came out firing against donald trump last night calling him a fraud. >> vice president biden also now offering his support after his boss, the president, weighed in. we've got details right now from abc's jonathan karl. >> reporter: on the sidelines no more.

i am fired up and i cannot wait to get out there and campaign for hillary. >> reporter: as for bernie sanders' hard-fought campaign -- >> i know some say these primaries have somehow left the democratic party more divided. well, you know what, they said that eight years ago, as well. >> reporter: the president called sanders a patriot and walked the senator down the white house colonnade to the oval office. sanders is still in the race, but after the obama meeting, he sounded ready to join forces with clinton. >> i look forward to meeting with her in the near future to see how we can work together to defeat donald trump and to create a government which represents all of us and not just the 1%. >> reporter: and this was more than just an endorsement. the white house made it clear that the president plans to campaign vigorously for hillary clinton during the course of the general election campaign beginning on wednesday with a rally with the two of them in green bay, wisconsin. first lady michelle obama will

also be out on the campaign trail during the course of the campaign. and this comes as the president's approval rating is at its high water mark for his second term. he is hugely popular among democrats of course, but also among independents. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. donald trump has been focusing on campaign fund-raising as he tries to move past the controversy over his comments about a federal judge. trump gathered with dozens of allies and gop heavy weights in new york yesterday. that meeting kicked off his general election fund-raising operation which some critics have said has been slow to get going. trump's chief strategist says the amount of money needed to win in november is "not as much as people think." breaking news overnight from ohio where residents of a cincinnati suburb are being urged to stay indoors at this hour. police searching overnight for a suspect who shot a female deputy and another man. the suspect described as a 19-year-old man. the deputy was shot in the leg as she responded to a domestic dispute call late last night.

officials say she is alert and conscious. the other victim is also expected to survive. attorneys for the man accused the shooting deaths of nine parishioners at a south carolina church have requested a judge not a jury decide the case. in court papers filed yesterday the attorneys acknowledged that federal prosecutors have said they won't go along with that request. dylan roof is set to go on trial in november. israel is temporarily barring all palestinians from entering the country after two palestinian cousins allegedly killed four israelis in an outdoor tel aviv cafe earlier this week. israel had already announced other restrictions on travel by palestinians and this new ban remains in effect till midnight sunday. today is the first friday in the muslim holy month of ramadan. a family tragedy in houston. three family members going to visit a sick relative were killed when their small plane crashed. the pilot was the mother of six children. the recordings from air traffic control reveal trouble as she

prepared to land. abc's david kerley with the details. >> reporter: the small plane crashed into a car in a parking lot. >> all of a sudden it just -- right down. >> reporter: after missing multiple landing attempts. >> ma'am, ma'am, straighten up. straighten up. >> reporter: all three of those on board killed, but there was worry. >> get back, get back. >> reporter: the small plane is equipped with an explosive charge for its parachute, responders worrying it was still armed. the crash, coming after a controller tried for eight minutes to help the pilot get on the ground. >> don't force it if you can't. >> okay, okay, thank you. >> i think you're too high, cirrus, uh, 5-2-golf. >> reporter: the small plane was lined up to the wrong runway at houston hobby airport. it turns, circling, lining up for the correct runway but it's too high. misses that landing and another go around. >> 3-5 cleared to land, trying to get down again, 4252 gulf. >> no problem. >> reporter: but that landing misses too, and the plane crashes just past the runway. no one on the ground was hurt.

the ntsb is on the scene. in addition to looking at the wreckage, they will also be examining the pilot's experience who started this fatal flight in norman, oklahoma. david kerley, abc news. meanwhile, riders were trapped after the power went out at an amusement park in charlotte, north carolina. a rotating swing ride called the wind seeker the tallest ride in the park was among three of the rides affected. the power was out for a minute or two but it about two hours to bring people down from the ride. a houston area man is suing harris county, texas, because he says jail employees choked him. and he offers as proof this mug shot which shows hands around his neck. christopher johnson says he was choked because he wouldn't stop smiling. he says he always smiles for a photograph. the sheriff's department says jailers often have to hold up the heads of uncooperative suspects while they're taking

sanders day in washington. after leaving the white house, sanders met with senate democratic leader harry reid. following their conversation, reid says he believes sanders has accepted the facts that hillary clinton is the presumptive democratic nominee. reid asked him to speak to a gathering of democratic senators next week. israel has extra police on duty in jury rhus jerusalem's old city today, the first friday in the muslim holy month of ramadan. tensions are high after an attack that killed four israelis. israel has canceled many travel permits for palestinians during ramadan. the palestinian authority condemned attacks against civilians in general without mentioning tel aviv. in north africa, libyan government forces are on the verge of a major victory against isis. militants reportedly are retreating from the terror

group's stronghold of sirte pushing into the city center. sirte is the most important isis base outside of syria and iraq. its loss would be a major blow to isis. a virginia man who joined isis for two months and apparently changed his mind has appeared in federal court back here in the u.s. muhamad khweis is charged with providing material support to terrorists. he was captured in northern iraq in march later telling kurdish tv he became disenchanted with isis. >> i didn't really support their ideology and that's when i decided i needed to escape. >> at least 85 americans have been charged with isis-related crimes but khweis is the first to be captured on the battlefield. three people have been killed in houston after a small plane crashed into a car parking lot. the plane missed multiple landing attempts another houston's hobby airport. and for eight agonizing minutes the controller tried to help the plane land. that pilot a mother of six was taking her husband and brother-in-law to visit their sick father.

an investigation is now under way. the faa has opted not to require psychological testing for pilots but the agency plans to take steps to encourage self-reporting of mental illness. more training will be provided for medical examiners who screen pilots. this comes one year after a german wings pilot who struggled with mental health issues deliberately crashed a plane into the alps. 150 people were killed. tens of thousands of fans are expected to attend today's memorial service for muhammad ali in his hometown of louisville, kentucky. yesterday the boxing legend was mourned at a muslim prayer service. abc's ryan smith has more. >> it was what the champ himself had hoped for. ♪ >> reporter: 15,000 people of all races and religions attending muhammad ali's janazah, part of the funeral ritual for the islamic faith. alis's body arriving at this arena in louisville. his beloved hometown, his family, fellow boxing greats and people from all over the world shoulder to shoulder, a sea of cell phones capturing the

debt-stricken government. the house voted overwhelmingly to allow the territory to restructure its $72 billion debt in return for federal oversight of puerto rico's government. the bill had bipartisan support but still needs senate approval. a $2 billion on the bond is due in just three weeks. when it comes to eating tex mex, diners apparently got to go to mo's. a survey finds that mo's southwest grill is now the most popular brand in that specialty. after a rough year with food safety problems, chipotle fell all the way from first to fifth. mo's is known for a wide selection of ingredients for some build your own menu items. >> got to go to mo's. so there's good news for parents. teens are having a lot less sex. a new survey from the cdc finds only 41% of high school students have had sex. that by the way is down from 47% for much of the last decade. the survey also finds a decrease in students who had had sex before the age of 13 and the researchers noted that video game usage has nearly doubled since 2003. the world health organization is issuing new warnings about the zika virus.

the w.h.o. says women who live in areas where zika is spreading should consider delaying pregnancy since there's no other sure way to avoid risk of birth defects. here in the u.s., the head of the cdc is urging lawmakers and congress to act quickly in approving more money to fight zika. >> a vaccine is promising but it's going to take at least a couple years to have it available. even when and if we have a vaccine, we need better ways to control mosquitos because they carry other diseases as well. >> the house and the senate are supposed to negotiate differences in their funding bills to fight the virus. now to sports, fans were late for last night's game of the stanley cup final in pittsburgh. they missed quite a bit. the penguins and san jose sharks scored four goals in just over five minutes of the game that by the way is the fastest opening four-goal sequence in stanley cup finals history. 3-2. an empty net goal later.

who has shot at least two people including a sheriff's deputy. the area has been shut down and residents are urged to stay indoors. officials say the suspect is a 19-year-old man, one of the victims is a female deputy who responded to a call about a domestic disturbance. we are told she is conscious and alert. we'll stay on top of this breaking news story. and today is the day muhammad ali planned himself a grand final farewell in his hometown of louisville. tens of thousands are expected there today before the memorial service at an arena. there will be a 19-mile procession through his old neighborhood followed by a private burial. former president bill clinton will deliver the eulogy for ali who died at age 74. abc news will have coverage throughout the day. we've been following breaking news there southern california a powerful earthquake jolted millions of people awake this morning. >> 5.1 mall tud quake hit after 1:00 a.m. the epicenter was in borrego springs, south of palm springs. it was felt from l.a. western

sub herbs all the way to san diego. orange county felt it, too. there's a series of aftershocks. >> facebook and twitter are full of reports of people who felt one woman said she felt a soft roll and moments later it felt stronger. tony hawk tweeted from his home in san diego county, it felt like a bus hit our house. still early, but there are no reports of major damages right now. again, a moderate earthquake rocking southern california this morning. we're going to continue to monitor this breaking story. hundreds of yarnell arizona residents are out of their homes overnight as a brush fire threatens their community. the blaze has consumed about 1,300 acres of land so far and destroyed three unoccupied structures. just three years ago, another brush fire killed 19 members of a fire fighting crew there. that prompted the community to clear out the brush. >> the community of yarnell has worked very hard the last two years putting in a fire break along the east side of town that we were able to tie into and

with the defense. and a driver from battle creek, michigan, has been charged with five counts of murder following the horrific hit and run crash earlier this week. charles picket jr. did not appear in court. but the prosecutor says he'll be arraigned when he's medically able. he's charged with driving his pickup into a group of cyclists tuesday night and running from the scene. five people were killed. he could face life in prison if convicted. something cool from iceland, a possible breakthrough in the battle against climate change and pollution. a power plant there is the first in the world to tush carbon emissions into stone. yeah, the team took the emissions from the atmosphere, dissolved them in water and sealed them with basalt rocks managing to do so in just two years instead of thousands they originally thought it would take. basalt is available all over the world, which means the method could be scaled up and put into wider use. a lot of us get a little cranky with the weatherman

stanford university swimmer convicted of campus sexual assault. >> now vice president joe biden is adding his voice to the growing chorus of outrage as we learn new details about the athlete's background. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: the vice president opened his letter echoing the sentiment of millions. writing, "i do not know your name, but your words are forever seared on my soul." the victim's letter, clicked on nearly 14 million times, describes in raw detail her sexual assault by former stanford swimmer brock turner. "i am filled with furious anger," biden wrote, "both that this happened to you and that our culture is still so broken that you were ever put in the position of defending your own worth." adding, "and while the justice system has spoken in your particular case, the nation is not satisfied." national outrage reaching a fever pitch. this banner hanging off an l.a. freeway. and a petition to recall the judge in the case signed by nearly a million people. all this as more details emerge

about another side of brock turner whose lawyers say he denied ever using any illicit substances. but in a sentencing brief submitted to the judge and obtained by abc news, the prosecution says texts and photos found on his phone show excessive drinking and using drugs including this photo prosecutors say is turner with a pipe. a second photo in the prosecution's brief which we misidentified as turner holding a bong was in fact another student turner had on his phone. in one text sent the summer before college turner writes, dude, i did acid last week. the judge weighed all of that and still decided on that six-month sentence. we already know that turner will be out on september 2nd. that is after serving just three months of that six-month sentence. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. >> still a very heated case. you know, before it though, this judge has 13 years behind the bench without controversy. >> and as a result of all of

this, now he's getting some death threats. but there is that petition to recall him. i just checked. it now has more than a million signatures. >> even the public defender on this case said despite what you may think about the sentencing which obviously he didn't agree with, he said that he doesn't think that the judge should be recalled. he says there can be public outrage but you don't want people recalling judges because they don't support the way they do their jobs. he followed his job lawfully. >> yes, he did, and they decided not to appeal. when we come back, what president obama said to jimmy fallon about his new smartphone. and how justin bieber got into trouble again with his fists.
