this afternoon on that tragic story from a resort near disney world. >> searchers have recovered the body of a 2-year-old boy after that alligator attack. >> the child was wading in a lake at a disney world hotel last night wht gator snatched him and dragged him under water. >> marci gonzalez is it live in lake buena vista, florida, with the latest e. >> reporter: dan and ama, that child has now been identified as 2-year-old lane graves. the sheriff says he and a priest delivered that heartbreaking news to his family. search teams making the devastating discovery, today finding the body of the 2-year-old boy snatched by an alligator last night as he waded in ankle-deep water at a disney resort. >> at about 3:30 today we recovered the remains of the 2-year-old from the water. >> we're going to try to continue searching. we're going to make certain that we have the alligator that was

involved. >> reporter: at least 50 law enforcement officials and helicopters and boats and diving in the murky water looking nonstop since that first horr y horrifying 911 call came in at 9:16 last night. the family on vacation from nebraska was on the shore of the manmade seven seas lagoon at the grand floridian resort for movie night. the boy playing in inches of water when the gator grabbed him. his parents trying desperately to save the toddler. >> the father entered the water and tried to grab the child, was not successful in doing so. at some point, i'm told that the mother also may have entered the water. >> reporter: the area was clearly marked with "no swimming" signs but no warnings about alligators. disney for now closing this and its other lakeside beaches. everyone here at the walt disney world resort is devastated by

this. >> reporter: five alligators were captured here today and euthanized. now, officials are still trying to verify that among them is the gator that killed little lane graves. we're live in florida, abc 7 news. dan and ama? now to the mass shooting in orlando. investigators want people who may have had contact or know anything about gunman omar mateen to contact them. records say mateen passed a psychological test in 2007 as part of his application to be be a private security guard. police are now looking more closely at his wife. the abc news reporter gloria riviera has the story. >> reporter: investigators now focus on orlando shooter omar mateen's wife, asking what she might have known about her husband's plan. she is now koofrmting with the fbi after being shown footage of herself with mateen at various orlando locations. law enforcement says she allegedly went with her husband to buy ammo and they had been to

pulse nightclub together at least once. it is not clear whether she knew his plans for mass murder or had been questioned by the fbi on terror ties. also unknown to the man who sold mateen his weapons. >> would you have liked to have known that the fbi was investigating him? >> would have been fantastic to know. he wouldn't have gotten a gun. >> reporter: a portrait of a deeply conflicted man is emerging. twice married, the father of a young son, his father says mateen disavowed home sexuality. yet as far back as ten years ago a former law enforcement classmate who does not want his face shown tells abc mateen expressed interest in gay men. >> he said, if you were gay, you would definitely be my type of guy. >> reporter: a survivor of mateen's rampage angel colon shot six times recalled the horror. >> just hear people shooting people already on the floor hurt. just leave us alone. you already hurt us. leave us alone and gunshots just got closer and closer. >> reporter: gloria riviera, abc

news, washington. >> now, the scrutiny of mateen's wife is reaching here to the bay area where nora solomon grew up and went to high school. >> reporter: leslie brinkley continues our coverage in rodeo. >> reporter: that's right. we understand and are learning more about the gunman's wife who may face criminal charges herself. sources say the fbi -- she told the fbi that she feared her husband might go on a shooting rampage and that she tried to talk him out of it. but in the end she never called 911. this is the house where she grew up in rodeo. this is the gunman's 30-year-old wife seen for the first time in this yearbook photo. she graduated from high school in crockett in 2004 and lived here with her mother and father and three younger sisters in rodeo. she met the gunman omar mateen online on facebook and they were married in 2011 in hercules according to this longtime family friend who came to visit

her mother. >> i give my sympathy for everybody, for the family and i'm very sorry about that. he denied things like that. we don't accept it. that's all. >> reporter: friends say after their marriage they didn't see her anymore. she only came home once for her father's funeral two years ago. as seen in this video and photos obtained exclusively by daily mail.com, homeland security investigators spent 90 minutes inside the home on monday. she is cooperating with the fbi in their investigation into the mass shooting in orlando. surveillance video shows her joining her husband on visits to a store to buy a holster and ammunition and on a trip to the pulse nightclub as he searched for targets. they visited disney world just days before the shooting. this neighbor in rodeo says he worries most about the couple's 3-year-old son. >> that's very sad because now the family becomes apart.

it is another child left alone in this world. >> reporter: her mother would not comment on her daughter's role leading up to the shooting. in rodeo, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. one of the victims of the orlando massacre is being remembered for his zest for life and love of travel. 34-year-old eddie sotomayor organized vacations for a travel company that worked with gay men. san francisco marketing executive john coal koecoalzar during one of the cruises. >> he was great and working with hundreds and maybe thousands of people. he was always patient. he was calm. he was a very friendly person. and he knew a lot of us by name. part of facebook groups before we met up before the cruise. >> he has a mediterranean trip coming up and had planned to see sotomayor again. he thought about canceling the trip after the attack but says he will go on the cruise to show his support for sotomayor. coming up on "world news tonight" at 5:30, a look at what investigators have unkoufred about the shooter's double life.

>> officers from the bay area are showing their support for san jose police as they mourn one of their own. michael katherman died yesterday when his motorcycle collided with a minivan. police chiefs and command staff members from several different law enforcement agencies paid respect today at san jose police headquarters. >> nice to see the support from the community as well as the other officers on the department. and everybody is there to help out one another. >> last night officers and firefighters from different agencies escorted his body to the medical exam innerer's office. the san jose police officers association has set up a fund to help the family. you can find a link to donate on our website abc 7 news.com. oakland police are looking for the people who opened fire yesterday near a vigil killing a 17-year-old girl. it happened at 13th and franklin street. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas is live at police headquarters with the story. eric? >> reporter: and it was tragedy on top of tragedy. and of course as you mentioned the 17-year-old girl is the

victim. let's show you who we're talking about here. her name is regina jeffreys. she was shot to death near the intersection of 13th and franklin street near downtown oakland. she and dozens of other young people had been at a funeral at a church on 66th avenue in oakland for two young men who drowned in stanislaus county last month. they were both oakland youngsters. now, the young people migrated to the downtown area for a vigil. witnesses say there was a fight near the corner of 14th and franklin after it broke up, several young men in a car pulled up and at least one got out and started shooting. >> suspects had approached a group of people in this area of 13th and franklin and fired on this group of people. >> i wondered if it was chinese new year again. i smelled the gun powder, thought it was fireworks. i realized people were running back and forth and i decided to go inside. >> reporter: now, a memorial to

but clouds are approaching. nofrtd, a big storm out to sea, sweeping clouds and even thunderstorms into the parts of the northernmost california. but right now here in the bay area, we have dry conditions with winds gusting to 26 miles per hour in concord, 30 at fairfield, 28 at livermore, 28 at novato. here's our storm impact scale as the storm approaches. we use this scale to rank every storm coming to the bay area from 1 which is light to 5 which is sweefr. the approaching storm ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. it will bring showers overnight and here's the forecast animation storting 6:00 p.m. notice by 11:30 tonight we'll see showers approaching the north coast and then by about 4:00 a.m. we'll see showers spreading into the north bay which means there will likely be some wet spots for the early morning commute. i'll show you how much rain we can ask expect from this system and a heat wave coming our way in a few minutes. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4, the crime reported inside a san jose state's resident hall.

burlingame. cal bem and all the bay area. this is abc 7 news. san jose state university police are does asking for the public's health to solve a sexual assault case. >> kristen sze is here with surveillance video police released today. >> ama and dan, we want to be clear the man we're about to show you on video is not being called a suspect. right now police are calling him a witness. they want to identify him, find him, and ask him for any information that could help bring an attacker to justice. this is a video recorded on march 15th at 9:30 in the morning. the man police are looking for is seen entering you washburn residence hall with a woman. her face has been blurred to protect her identity. san jose state police say a victim reported that an unknown man walked into her dorm room and sexually assaulted her. we're going to slow the video down now and show it to you one more time so you get a really good look at the man's face, build, and gait. police describe the witness they want to interview as a white man over 6 feet tall about 200 pounds wearing a gray v-neck

t-shirt. if you have any information, you're asked to call the san jose state university police department or go to their website. you can even leave a tip anonymously. we have a link on our website abc 7 news.com. >> kristen, thanks. in the south bay, an investigation is under way into what caused a massive fire that destroyed several businesses. flames ripped through a strip mall about midnight at the intersection of santa teresa and callahan boulevard. firefighters kept the fire from spreading to nearby houses at least but it was bad. matt keller has more. >> reporter: when a fire is this big, not much can be done to stop it. firefighters called for four alarms after it 'twas called in just after midnight and by the end, the shopping center in san jose was in ruins. >> wow! >> the entire place burned down. >> hole apply may mackerel. >> 12 of the 15 businesses at the corner of ka halen avenue and santa teresa boulevard were

destroyed by the fire, including a mexican food restaurant, and many others. >> it's just all mom and pop places, you know. just kind of not millionaires, not corporations, just mom and pop places. >> reporter: the owner of the bar says this huge fire started small behind the restaurant but he says the response from san jose fire seemed to lack a sense of urgency. >> then they took their time like setting up their gear and stuff. next thing you know, half this whole building is like engulfed in flames, you know what i mean? it's like -- then all of these other trucks took forever to get here. >> reporter: san jose fire spokesman says the first firefighters arrived four minutes of after the first call and the flames had already spread into the attic. residents in homes behind the sprip mall used garden hoses to keep the flames away. firefighters set up structure protection. no homes were damaged.

warm spot at los gaut tease. this is the view from mt. tam as clouds are beginning to push into the area. as you can see trees blowing in the breeze there and the forecast features are these. showers arrive overnight. we'll have some wet spots for the morning commute and it will be heetding up all across the bay area except at the coast starting on father's day. here's a look at our lows tonight as showers push into the north bay. we'll see lows mainly in the low to mid-50s. those showers are likely to spread, though. our storm impact scale ranks this storm 1 on the scale of 1 to 5. it's a light storm producing showers tomorrow with a slight chance of some thunder mainly in the afternoon and most areas will see less than a quarter inch of rainfall. here's the forecast animation starting 9:00 tonight. by about 3:00 a.m. we'll see showers pushing into the north bay and then by 6:00 a.m. we'll see them spreading slightly south of the golden gate and maybe over toward the east bay a little bit. but the heaviest concentration of showers will be in the north bay. but of course that does mean we'll see some wet spots across the bay area for the morning

commute and probably a slow commute at that. by 10:00 tomorrow morning another little wave of energy may produce some showers and rain down over the peninsula and the areas south of the golden gate. but by midafternoon we'll see showers breaking up and winding down. so as we get into the evening hours tomorrow we expect rainfall totals again to be less than a quarter inch in most locations but up in the north by a little wetter. on we go to highs tomorrow, ranging from about 61 in half moon bay to 68 at oakland to low and mid-70s inland. and speaking of inland, we'll use livermore as our indicator of the high temperature trend inland. notice the big spike in temperatures over the weekend beginning sunday which is father's day. we'll see highs pushing into the 90s in many inland locations. in fact, by tuesday we expect highs to break the 100 degree mark in the warmest spots but let's start back at thursday again because thursday and friday temperatures will still be below average for most locations this time of the year.

the shake-up comes amid a sex scandal involving police and an underage girl. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony tweeted that the mayor will likely -- laura has the impact of today's shake-up in a live report at 5. disney world released a statement today after a 2-year-old boy died at the park in an alligator attack. abc news tweeted the statement that reads in part, the theme park is devastated and doing what it can to help the family. there's new hope today for the capture of a violent criminal whose crimes span from sacramento to the east bay and down to southern california. there's i a new effort to find him nearly 40 years after his rape and murder spree. jonathan bloom is live in the newsroom with the story. >> ama, folks in sacramento knew him as the east area rapist down in l.a., they called him the golden state killer. now on the 40th anniversary of his first crime, law enforcement is launching a nationwide push to find out his identity.

>> this subject has eluded investigators for over 40 years and the victims and their families deserve justice. >> the fbi has joined the hunt for one of california's most notorious criminals who first struck 40 years ago in rancho cordova. >> he came in, had a ski mask on, and jumped on the bed and had a knife. >> reporter: police called him the east area rapist. he was also a burglar. >> after it was all over and done with, he went through the stuff in the room, took money out of my purse. >> reporter:. >> in the months that followed, a slew of sexual assaults in the area. the m.o. was distinctive and brutal. >> blindfolded, gagged, hands tied, legs tied and then you know, pulled me up like this because i was on my stomach and put my back in bed and said, if you move i'm going to kill uf. >> that was in the late 1970s. but in 2000 dna evidence confirmed a link between the bay area crimes and a series of murders in southern california

during the 1980s. the east area rapist had become the golden state killer. >> this serial offender was probably one of the most prolific certainly in california possibly within the united states. >> the fbi has created a website and they're offering a $50,000 reward. the killer could be in his 60s or 70s by now and may be keeping mementos stolen during his many crimes. >> the answer is out there. we need a name because when we match that name with that profile, that journey for justice will come to an end. >> in san francisco, jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. wreckage from crashed egyptair flight 804 has been found now in the mediterranean sea. egyptian investigators say they've found several main locations of wreckage. of those pieces of fuselage will be retrieved by ships looking for the plane. flight 804 plunged into the sea may 19th killing all 66 om board. this week investigators revealed they do not believe an explosion caused the airbus 320 to crash.

why the plane went down, though, is still unknown. there was a show of desperation in court today by former sprinter oscar pistorius in his sentencing hearing for his wife's murder. pistorius removed his prosthesis and hobbled around the court as his lawyers tried to show that the double amputee is a vulnerable man who deserves leniency. the demonstration drew gasps from onlookers while pistorius wiped away tears. the south african is awaying a new sentence after an appeals court changed his manslaughter conviction to murder. prosecutors are demanding 15 years in prison. donald trump's claim that his proposed ban on muslims from the u.s. might have prevented the orlando massacre came under attack today from hillary clinton. >> a ban on muslims would not have stopped this attack. neither would a wall. i don't know how one builds a wall to keep the internet out.

>> clinton's comments came during a national security discussion with veterans, military families and members of the defense community in hampton, virginia. meantime, in georgia, donald trump told supporters that the orlando death toll wouldn't have been as high if people inside the club were carrying guns. >> if the bullets were going in the other direction aimed at this guy who was just open target practice, you would have had a situation, folks, which would have been always horrible but nothing like the carnage that we all, as a people, suffered this weekend. >> the nra endorsed trump last month but they're on opposite sides of one issue. the nra says it will accept trump's invitation for a meeting. on capitol hill, members of the house are about to start reading the powerful letter written by the victim in the stanford sexual assault case. the reading will take place

after the last vote of the day which is expected to be in the next hour. congresswoman jackie spear says dozens of democrats and republicans have asked to read portions of the letter. spear says it powerfully communicates the agony of sexual assault. a gay man who came to zpraengs to avoid persecution in mexico is now facing deportation. abc 7 news was outside the immigration office as supporters of the 34-year-old martinez rallied for his freedom. martinez was detained at his home on june 1st. he had been deported previously and reentered the country illegal illegally. immigration officials want him to be deported because he was arrested last year for drunk driving. his partier says he and martinez have built a life together but now fear they will be be separated forever. >> he has the look of fear on his face. he was crying because he didn't know what was going on, what's going to happen if he'll ever see us again.

it was take two for graduation this week for many students at a pennsylvania high school trying to help their friend get back on his feet again. the main ceremony happened at the high school three weeks ago, but scott dunn just could not be there. he was in a coma. a few days before graduation he lost control of his car on the way to a track meet. >> i remember waking up in the hospital and asking my mom what day it was. she told me it was the 28th.

first thing i said, i looked at her and said, i missed my graduation. ♪ >> not exactly. more than half of scott's class went back to school yesterday to show support for him after he woke up from his coma. scott says he's noter sure what's next, maybe college, maybe the military. his first goal, of course, is just getting better. well, warriors fans can now get their hands on a type of steph curry memorabilia that's never been on the market before. a game-worn mouth guard is being auctioned. the mouth guard is from a fan who picked it up off the floor near the bench after a me. it's expected to sell for at least $5,000. bidding begins august 3rd. curry has said chewing on the mouth guard calms him down, especially at the free throw line. a warriors spokesman hasn't commented on that auction. >> wait a minute. is that genuine steph curry saliva? >> apparently. >> no wonder it's going for $5,000. >> just don't use it obviously.

let's talk about the weather forecast. >> spencer christian is here with that. >> all right, we have some genuine showers on the way. here is a look at live doppler 7 hd. you couldn't tell by looking at the sky now because we have lots of sunshine here, but clouds will be thickening during the overnight hours and we'll be seeing showers coming in, oh, during the early hours of the morning. rainfall intensity up in santa rosa will be at its greatest between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. and in fact the north bay is the area that will in general see the greatest likelihood of rainfall. here's the forecast animation starting at 9:00 p.m. notice that by 3:00 a.m. we'll see an area of showers pushing into the north bay as it spreads a little farther inland by 6:00 a.m. there will be wet spots for the morning commute, but once again we expect at least in the early part of the day the rainfall to be concentrated more heavily in the north bay. then it will start to taper off in the afternoon hours and it will wind on down and end by tomorrow evening. so here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. showers in tomorrow evening,

president. nicola mendelson predicts in five years facebook will be all video and no text. she says video is the best way to tell stories and helps people digest more information. analysts say removing text would be problematic since some users will always prefer written words to moving pictures and sounds. well, yet another major retailer is questioning the security measures of visa and mastercard in a federal lawsuit. home depot claims the credit card companies are using security measures prone to fraud putting retailers and customers at risk of hacking attacks by cyber thieves. it also says the new cards with so-called chip technology are still less secure than cards used elsewhere in the world. last month walmart sued cease sa over similar issues. a new study shows california hospitals rank among the worst in the nation when it comes to emergency room response time. health data site's health grow says california ranked fourth worst based on what it calls a

timeliness score. that score considered several factors, among them a patient's total time at a hospital from arrival to departure, and the time a patient spends in the e.r. before being seen by a medical professional. the three worst states were delaware, maryland and new york. all right, the vegetable tryitr trying to be the next kale and coffee is no longer deemed a carcinogen. the world health organization's research arm has downgraded its classification of coffee as a possible carcinogen declaring there isn't enough proof to show a link to cancer. but the international agency for research on cancer or iarc also announced in a report published today that drinking very hot beverages of any kind could potentially raise the cancer risk. a study claiming to show teens who use e-cigarettes are six times more likely to start smoking is being slammed as misleading by doctors and public health experts. according to leading tobacco experts the study's author is dramatically misrepresenting the paper's conclusions and the

>> reporter: this is gracie, and this is her first stop today. the senior center where families have been getting updates on their loved ones since sunday's shooting. she is one of nearly a dozen other dogs flown in traveling with the organization canine comfort dogs. name a crisis, and they have been there. within hours of being called. orlando is no different. >> our policy is, if at all humanly possible with boots and paws on the ground within 24 hours of the invite. >> reporter: tim hez ner has been with these dogs in just about every major trip since 2008 from the boston bombings to sandy hook. >> still gets me. because it's -- >> reporter: trinity downtown lutheran church on east livingston church helped bring the dogs in. they have mro plans to go the hospital where survivors are still recovering. >> get relaxed with a dog that just wants to love on you, you feel comfortable and you can

city hall with the latest on the story. laura? >> reporter: hi, dan. it's just last week that mayor libby schaaf said that ben farrow was the person who could lead her city's police department through a difficult time. well, today may o or schaaf had acknowledge she made a mistake. >> i take sfonlt for this decision. >> reporter: just six days after appointing ben farrow interim chief, the mayor took it back after learning new information about her selection. >> after the information i received it raised concerns for me about whether he can effectively lead this department at this particular moment in time. and during this critical transition. >> i am extremely grateful for the opportunity. >> reporter: farrow was on loan from the b.a.r.t. police force. before that, he spent many years with opd. >> i'm shocked. my members are seeking some sort of stability, and this is the furthest you could ever come from stability.

>> reporter: schaaf brought farrow in when former chief sean whent resigned amid a growing sex scandal involving as many as 14 oakland officers and inappropriate relationship with a teenager. schaaf wouldn't say what information led her to dismiss farrow, but we have learned he had an inappropriate sexual relationship years ago unrelated to the current opd scandal. >> everything that's been going on since the story broke has been embarrassing. the question he is how much more embarrassing can it get? >> reporter: schaaf named assistant chief paul figueroa as act willing chief but says she plans to look outside the department for a permanent replacement. >> supervisors have not done their jobs. >> reporter: earlier civil rights attorneys john burris and jim shannon announced they want increased federal oversight of opd's recruitment and hiring practices given the officers involved in the current sex scandal were all hired since 2013. so far, we have learned that t
