>> reporter: schaaf brought farrow in when former chief sean whent resigned amid a growing sex scandal involving as many as 14 oakland officers and inappropriate relationship with a teenager. schaaf wouldn't say what information led her to dismiss farrow, but we have learned he had an inappropriate sexual relationship years ago unrelated to the current opd scandal. >> everything that's been going on since the story broke has been embarrassing. the question he is how much more embarrassing can it get? >> reporter: schaaf named assistant chief paul figueroa as act willing chief but says she plans to look outside the department for a permanent replacement. >> supervisors have not done their jobs. >> reporter: earlier civil rights attorneys john burris and jim shannon announced they want increased federal oversight of opd's recruitment and hiring practices given the officers involved in the current sex scandal were all hired since 2013. so far, we have learned that the sex scandal has been confined to

departments here in the east bay, but today we learned that san francisco police are now also conducting a review to determine if any of their officers had inappropriate contact with the teenager at the center of the scandals here. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> laura, thank you. oakland police are looking for the people who opened fire yesterday near a vigil killing a 17-year-old girl. regina jeffreys was shot to death last night near the intersection of 13th and franklin streets in downtown oakland just two blocks from city hall. earlier, she and dozens of people had been at a memorial service at a church on 66th avenue for two young men who drowned in stanislaus county last month. the gathering moved downtown for a vigil and while there a car drove up and started shooting. three others were injured. now to the latest on the nightclub shooting in orlando. today hospital officials say six people wounded in the massacre are still in critical condition, 25 of the wounded are still in

the hospital. also today, orlando's mayor revealed the gunmanman omar mateen threatened to strap bombs to hostages and booby-trap the pulse nightclub with explosives that proved to be unfounded. tomorrow president obama and vice president joe biden will travel to orlando to meet with the families of the victims. the east bay community where the wife of the orlando mass gunman grew up is in shock and denial today. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony is live in rodeo with that part of the story. leslie? >> reporter: well, this is the childhood home of the orlando gunman's wife right here behind me in rodeo. she could possibly face criminal charges herself for her role, her potential role, in plans leading up to the attack. and today we looked deeper into her roots here in rodeo. 30 year old noor salman met the orlando gunman omar mateen on facebook. they were married in 2011 in hercules and after that family

friends say they didn't see her except once for her father's funeral two years ago. she grew up in this house in rodeo with her three younger sisters and graduated from johns high school in crockett in 2004 as seen in this yearbook photo. a friend of her mother's dropped off supplies at the house wednesday afternoon. >> i give my sympathy for everybody, for the family and i'm very sorry about that. we don't accept it. that's all. >> reporter: as seen in this video and photos obtained exclusively by daily mail.com, homeland security investigators spent 90 minutes inside the salmans' home on tuesday. the fbi says they've confronted salman with surveillance video that shows her joining her husband on visits to a store to buy a holster and ammunition and on a trip to the pulse nightclub as he searched for targets. the couple visited disney world just days before the shooting. this neighbor in rodeo says he worries most about the couple's

3-year-old son. >> that's very sad because now the family becomes apart. it's another child left alone in this world. >> reporter: noor salman's mother would not comment on her daughter's role leading up to the shooting. in rodeo, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. gun control is taking center stage right now in the u.s. senate. democrats have launched a filibuster demanding action in the wake of the orlando massacre and other mass shootings. >> having come through the experience of newtown, i've had enough. it's been four years, and nothing has been done. >> murphy vows to speak as long as necessary to prompt action on gun control measures, including expanding background checks for gun buyers and banning gun sales to people on terror watch lists. east bay congressman is showing his support tweeting, quote, as a house member i can't join senate democrats' filibuster but i sure do support it.

hold the floor. this shooting in orlando has san francisco police reviewing security measures for the upcoming pride parade. the festival is next saturday on june 25th, and the big parade is on sunday june 26th. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez is live at city hall with more. >> reporter: well, you know, close to 45 merchants showed up for this meeting, and that's a lot considering it took place on a wednesday at 3:00 in of the afternoon. but this is what was discussed. police reassured them that there will be extra police, more than ever, more than they have ever seen, and there might be outside help. police also want to remind everybody that the traditional pink party which has always taken place on saturday has been canceled. harvey's restaurant bar is located in the heart of the castro district. its strategic location also makes it a soft target. >> we're worried about a suicide bomber. we're worried about somebody with an assault rifle. >> reporter: city hall reached

out to harvey's and other businesses in the castro and south of market concerned about their security in the wake of the orlando mass shooting. today they met to discuss any possible vulnerabilities. >> this is mostly about making sure that these establishments have all the information they need so they can do what they need to do to keep their patrons and their staff safe. >> reporter: some bars will change their security policy. >> we usually have a doorman, but we're going to have some extra security this year, and, yeah, checking the bags will be a new thing. >> reporter: the mayor says the city will increase the number of police officers during pride week. >> encourage everyone to say something if you see something. >> reporter: steve porter says he's especially concerned about pink party held on saturday pride night. with no sponsor this year, there will be no controlled street closures. 50,000 people are expected. >> i won't hesitate to close early if things just seem like they're getting a little out of

hand on saturday night. >> reporter: next week, there will be a citywide meeting which will include local hospitals and how they will respond to an emergency situation. in san francisco lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. all right, stuck and going nowhere fast. that's the current situation for commuters heading west on the san mateo bridge. here, take a look now. sky7 hd is over the scene as well. actually, this is our bridge camera. we have the helicopter up as well. emergency road work is under way on a huge pothole on westbound lanes of highway 92. just before the high-rise, the two right lanes are closed. this is the result. it's been like this for a while. here is a look at the hole crews are repairing from the helicopter. traffic is backed up to the toll plaza. the lanes are not expected to reopen until 6:00 tonight. people are advised to use alternate routes but if you're already stuck in it, well, sadly, it's going to be a while for those folks. well, the morning commute could be messy. let's check in with abc 7 news

meteorologist sandhya patel to explain what's going on. >> well, dan, it's not going to look like this for sure. tomorrow morning we're expecting some showers. let me show you live doppler 7 hd and we'll talk about when they arrive. right now we're just track being some clouds around the bay area, but this system that is coming in from the north is producing thunderstorms across northern california, some snow at the higher elevations, and we are expecting those showers. so we bring in our storm impact scale. we've been rating scales all winter and spring from 1 to 5, 5 a severe storm, 1 a light storm. we're expecting a light one thursday, showers a slight possibility of thunder, less than a quarter inch for most areas. here is a look at the time line. while you're sleeping a few showers will develop around 3:00 a.m., 4:00 a.m. in the north bay, light to moderate this the intensity. 7:00 a.m., we're seeing showers in the north bay that will be slipping southward. i'll be back with the hour by hour time line taking you through the rest of your thursday and let ugg know about some big changes that will follow for the weekend. kristen? >> thanks.

a risky massive drug bust went down today in the north bay. officers say it's the first of its kind. santa rosa police sheriff's deputies and federal drugt agents raided several locations confiscating marijuana and hash oil. one police officer says drug officers had never before seen the particular process being used to extract hash oil. >> we were presented with a number of challenges, just dealing with safety and based on the processes of how the hash is being manufactured. >> extracting hash oil can be extremely dangerous because it often includes the use of butane or another flammable solvent. a huge show of support today for san jose police as they mourn one of their own. >> i knew mike. he was a liked officer. it's nice to see the support from the community. >> that includes officers from other cities bringing flowers like this gentleman. tonight we remember a man who lived each day with passion. plus -- >> it's bad news for our team.

abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at police headquarters where tributes are pouring in. vic in. >> reporter: well, mike katherman is the 13th officer in this department's history to die in the line of duty. he's being remembered by his colleagues as a cop who loved his work, loved his motorcycle, and as a family man who was devoted to his wife and two kids. officer michael katherman badge number 3900, the second motorcycle officer in department history to die on duty. >> i knew mike, and he was a well-looked officer, hard worker. >> reporter: friends and colleagues came to the police ad min building. so did the families of officers. their children threw pictures expressing their sorrow. kareen's husband is a cop. her thoughts are also with katherman's wife. >> as a wife, you often think about it. it's a possibility, and you

think about how you would deal with that. >> reporter: the 11-year veteran was on patrol yesterday afternoon when his motorcycle collided with a minivan at 10th and horning streets in north san hoe day. he died later at regional medical center. katherman went to valley christian high school in san jose. he loved being a motorcycle cop. he also loved riding dirt bikes with his wife and two young sons. earlier this year, in a sad irony, katherman rode in the police unity tour to honor fallen officers and raise money for their families. today police chiefs from south bay cities came to honor him and to show support for his department. morgan hill police chief david swain. >> it's a very difficult thing to deal with in our professional. >> reporter: gilroy police chief. >> we are actually out there every night put oug lives on the line never knowing how your day is going to go. >> reporter: michael katherman, age 34, end of watch june 14,

didn't know what to do. i really felt sick to my stomach after a while and the feeling didn't go away for quite a long time. >> new regulations to protect spouses not on the loans came just in time to allow karen to keep the house. but despite reforms, "consumer reports" says there are still plenty of pitfall was reverse mortgages. >> reverse mortgages can be very risky loans. they come with certain conditions and if you don't meet them, you could potentially lose your home. >> reporter: a reverse mortgage can also be expensive. so "consumer reports" has asked tough questions like, what is the total cost including closing fees and expenses? is moving a better, cheaper option? can you truly afford to live in your home? you're still responsible for paying property taxes, insurance and upkeep. and finally, is this a home you can stay in as you age? >> does it have a lot of stairs? is there big property to maintain? are you close to good doctors and hospitals?

and probably most important, are you near family members who can look out for you if you need help why your older lives? >> advice seniors should consider carefully. one important change, before applying for a reverse mortgage seniors will be required to fill out a detailed work sheet that outlines possible consequences. storm impact scale. we've been rating the storms 1 to 5 all season long. 5 is a severe storm. we've seen quite a few 1s which is what we're expecting thursday. shower was a slight possibility of thunder, less than a quarter of an inch of rain expects for most areas. here is your hour by hour time line. tonight we will see those clouds thickening. 4:00 a.m. tomorrow the north bay is seeing some light to moderate showers, same area 5:00 a.m. but by 7:00 a.m. the showers slip into the east bay, san francisco the peninsula and by 9:00 a.m. we are seeing most areas except for the south bay and parts of the inland east bay getting some wet weather. noontime still some showers going across the region and then things start to wind down for the evening hours, they'll become isolated in nature by thursday at 7:00. in terms of the rain totals, like i mentioned, most areas will see less than a quarter of an inch but there could be an isolated spot or two that picks up more like santa rosa. in the sierra, we're not expecting snow everywhere, but
