be warmer than yesterday with numbers near 80 inland. look for about 79 today in san jose, santa rosa, 73 in oakland with comfortable 60s at the coast. no fog to speak of. we'll talk about a big warmup starting tomorrow coming up. >> breaking news this morning out of contra costa county. a driver is dead after crashing their car into a tree in antioch. it happened before 1:00 this morning on hillcrest avenue. the four passengers in the car were taken to the hospital including one by helicopter. those four are currently in stable condition. police are investigating if alcohol, drugs or speed played a role in the crash. we'll bring you updates on abc 7 news as soon as we get them. a visibly frustrated libby schaaf introduced the fourth leader of the oakland police department in eight days. the mayor's announcement was startli startling. abc 7's lesley brinkley has the story. >> we're close to the end of an

investigation of racist text messages. we do think it's relevant to share that the text messages were sent by african-american officers, but they are wholly inappropriate and not acceptable from anyone that bears the badge of the oakland police department. >> mayor libby schaaf put sabrina landreth in charge of opd, the fourth to lead the department in eight days as acting chief paul figueroa stepped down after only two days on the job. >> i feel this is an appropriate time to place civilian oversight over this police department and to send a very clear message of not tolerating misconduct, unethical behavior and to root out what is clearly a toxic

left at her house on social media. the d.a. has not said how many cases could be affected. as mentioned, the past eight days have been very rocky for the oakland police department. on june 9, chief sean whent resigned due to the sex scandal. that day the city announced ben fairow would become interim police chief. just six days later on wednesday, schaaf fired fairow after she became aware of an affair he had while working previously for the department. assistant chief paul figueroa took over but is now out on leave. he's asking to return from leave with the rank of captain. yesterday protesters called for opd to release the names of all officers who knew about the sexual misconduct scandal but did nothing about it. the case involves officers having sex with an underage girl. protesters hanging a banner saying opd guilty of sex traffic

setbackfires to burn several acres of brush in a canyon. the goal is to stop it from advancing towards ranches, homes and vineyards. >> this whole area here, trying to create a buffer so the fire doesn't just run down this area right here. >> reporter: so far the fire has blackened more than 5800 acres since wednesday. 35-mile-per-hour winds caused it to quickly grow, threatening 270 structures and forcing residents to evacuate. water dropping helicopters, tankers and the d.c. 10 have attacked the fire from the air. the fire is burning in rugged, difficult-to-reach terrain for crews on the ground. >> when i came around the corner and saw how big it was, it was frightening. >> reporter: one of the many onlookers who stopped to take pictures and applause the hard work of the 1200 firefighters working to put out the blaze. >> once you see that many people are coming together to tackle this beast, that's overwhelming and incredible to see that.

>> that was melissa mcbride reporting. the sherpa fire is one of several burning throughout the state. with extreme heat coming, fire season could take a turn for the worse. abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo has that story. >> reporter: this video shows one large structure destroyed by flames. the comanche fire grew to 200 acres in a couple hours forcing mandatory evacuation. in san benito county, the king fire burned more than 200 acres and damaged two homes and two out buildings. in napa valley a wildfire charred about a dozen acres. fire season is off and running. >> i recommend to everybody to expect that fire could be coming near them. >> reporter: division chief ed oriot say it is fire danger is high. part of the problem, rain. >> northern california received more rain fall than southern california so that benefited the

grass crop. for us, that's the fuel that carries fire. >> reporter: the heat wave forecast for next week won't help. fires are asking people to clear dry grass and brush away from the homes and seal the house in places where flying embers can take root. katie marzullo, abc 7 news. a new senate letter says orlando gunman omar mateen made a series of facebook posts before and during the attack. one post blamed the united states for the deaths of, quote, innocent women and children. now the fbi has surveillance video from inside the nightclub where 49 people were killed. the video has not been released to the public and fbi officials say it is graphic and shows mateen walking through the club, firing on the crowd in cold blood. investigators say mateen texted his wife, noor salman during the shooting and asked if it was being covered on the news.

the fbi wants to know exactly what she knew beforehand. >> mass murder is premeditated. she lived with him, she knows something. >> salman and mateen's father are both on the no-fly list during the investigation. abc 7 news was in redwood city at a vigil for the victims of last week's mass shooting in orlando. the vigil included a reading of the victims' names, prayers, music and candles. if you have a gun you want to get rid of, a gun buyback program today in contra costa county. you can turn one in and get from $50 to $350 in return depending on the gun. it runs from 9:00 to 3:00 at pittsburg city hall. waking up to mild temperatures throughout the bay area. lisa is tracking the latest with the ak queccuweather forecast. >> you can see it's clear.

fremont, palo alto, north bay and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. the family of a homeless man shot to death by san francisco police in april has filed a lawsuit. investigators say 45-year-old luis patgongora was armed with a large kitchen knife. he ran at officers with the knife and they shot him six times. yesterday, john burris, the attorney for the family says gongora was needlessly provoked. >> you can have poor tactics and create a circumstance where you use deadly force. those tactics led to the shooting and that's fundamentally wrong. the two officers who shot gongora were veterans, having worked in laurmt for 30 years combined. lawyers delivered opening statements yesterday in a federal criminal trial with pge

as the defendant. the company is charged with violating pipeline safety codes as well as obstructing the investigation into the san bruno pipeline explosion. if convicted on all 13 counts, pg&e faces a fine of more than $5 million. reuters reports shell is looking for buyers for its martinez refinery. a sale wouldn't change much. industry analysts say it could be -- it's not clear what woup happen to the employees if another company buys the refinery. in a statement to abc 7 news, shell would not confirm the report. 8:14 is the time. the warriors practicing at oracle arena. the other team returned from cleveland landing at oakland's international airport yesterday afternoon. dub nation can't wait.

degrees. emeryville with lots of sunshine. numbers in the mid 50s. santa rosa you picked over .01 of rain. 61 in novato. 64 by the delta. concord, 61. livermore is 59 degrees. we'll be looking at a beautiful day today along the coastline, even tomorrow with our warmup still pleasant at the shoreline. so sunny this morning, temperatures nearing average today. then we'll see the warmest day of the week tomorrow for father's day, a light offshore flow off the surface allows temperatures to climb. i think around point reyes, could see upper 60s. 57 is the ocean temperature for the buoy off santa cruz. 73 there, 66 in monterey. here is the trend for tomorrow. look at all the reds. the numbers climb not only in our inland eastbound but 79 in oakland. san francisco a few degrees warmer. it will be very nice at the

coast. if you're thinking about going to the beach, tomorrow could be the best day, 89 in napa. summer arrives on monday. little change from around the bay and inland and even into tuesday. we're still pretty warm. but really the warmest day with more widespread 90s is going to be tomorrow on father's day. that will be inland. san mateo county, the clouds will clear, should be a nice afternoon. we'll be looking at temperatures from the low 60s with plenty of sunshine. 74 in oakland, upper 70s, fremont, it's high school graduation today, temperatures there will be the upper 70s. 81 in livermore, 79 in san jose. 79 over at oakland at the coliseum. light west wind up to 15 miles an hour for the game, 73 at 4:00 in the afternoon. the accuweather seven-day forecast, about average

orlando. this morning president obama is reflecting on his visit with the families of the orlando attack. in his weekly address the president says our country needs to be tougher on reducing gun violence. he also spoke about father's day. he wants the american people to focus on the responsibilities we have to each other, especially when parents talk to their children about tragedies. >> as parents, we should remember there's one responsibility that's always in our power to fulfill, our obligation to give our children unconditional love and support, to show them the difference between right and wrong, to teach them to love, not to hate, and to appreciate our differences, not as something to fear, but as a great gift to cherish. >> the president also asked that communities come together to stand strong in light of last week's event. uber is showing solidarity with the victims in orlando. the company is offering free rides this weekend to and from

events for the lbgt community. a discount of up to $20 will be dropped off or picked up at harvey milk plaza, the castro district or the white horse inn. the sacramento chapter of a group called the pink pistols say it's seeing a surge in membership. they promote gun ownership rights and personal protection of members of the lgbt communities. >> armed gays don't get barbed. that's all we're trying to do, creating a world safe for people like us. >> not everybody is going to want to own one and that's fine. this group will teach you the basic -- >> the pink pistols meet at the firing range once a month. group leaders say their club is open to anyone regardless of sexual orientation. abc 7 news was at san francisco city hall for the raising of the lgbt flag in honor of pride month.

sunny skies this morning. temperatures nearing average today. a big spike tomorrow with 90s inland. a few 90s the rest of the workweek, but not as warm as we'll have tomorrow. an offshore flow above the surface for your sunday afternoon. that is spelling a very warm sunday. here is the air quality the next four days. it should be pretty good today. as we get warmer tomorrow, the air quality takes a hit. in our inland east bay the santa clara valley, we'll bring back a stronger sea breeze monday and tuesday and the air quality improves. upper 70s today, upper 80s tomorrow. there's the spike, trending a little downward on monday, leveling off in the mid 80s for the first week of summer. we'll look for more sunshine today at our beaches today from point reyes down to pacifica. upper 60s both today and
