let's go to lisa amin gulezian who begins live team coverage on the fire. >> reporter: the fire is still not under control. there's a lot of smoke out here, which is why firefighters have given us the smoke -- these masks just in case. but take a look behind me. you can see the focus continues to be on this three-story building. four hosers on it right now. they've been pouring water on it for hours. the fire is believed to have started at cole hardware and it is affecting eight addresses. there's a shelter in place order in effect for those within a five-block radius, so parts of cesar chavez, folsom are affected. the smoke has been thick and heavy. the fire has been hard for firefighters to fight. >> what i do know is at this time, listening to my radio, we're taking a defensive mode to this fire, which means our fire

department is fighting this fire from the outside now. all the large lines that we have out, the ladders, the ladder fight, that put as lot of water on to a fire to help us knock down the flames. >> reporter: so far no injuries have been reported, which is a good thing. firefighters are using thermal imaging equipment to check units as they go through, and one positive thing i want to mention. according to the assistant fire chief this fire is no long are spreading and i want to point out that mission street, between valencia and 30th, will be offlimits because of a hazmat situation out here. live in bernal heights. abc7 news. >> a viewers have sent us photos and videos. this one shows the enormous fire and large plume of smoke from more than a mile away. when you see news where you live, take photo or video and

share if using #"abc7now." >> sergio quintana continues live team coverage from the safeway where dozen of 0 evacuees have gathered. under. >> reporter: we have counted 50 people who have assembled here at the evacuation center at the safeway parking lot. we do not have a final number of all the evacuees because this is still a situation that is unfolding. the american red cross arrived to help with the initial release effort. nurses, counselors, and other services will be available here. we have also seen them start passing out toy's to the children who are here to keep then occupied. the fire department has come to address the group about the condition of the buildings damaged but it's not clear if that included a timeline for residents to retrieve belongings. >> what was it like leaving home? >> stressful. >> i was scared.

an update on the breaking news in san francisco where firefighters continue to pour water on a massive fire. it is not spreading but they're not ready to call it contained. at least 40 residents have been displaced. no injuries reported. residents are being told to shelter in place with their doors and windows closed. displaced residents are being told to go to the safeway parking lot for red cross help. thousands people will taint northern california's largest on the water festival this weekend. the summer sails stice kicked off. there's a regatta and racing and on land people can enjoy music and food. the event start net 2001 and now celebrated in 40 countries worldwide. >> and this was the day for it. they get out and enjoy it.
