live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> a devastating fire tears through buildings in san francisco. tonight there are no serious injuries but more than three dozen people cannot go home. good evening, i'm eric thomas. we have team coverage tonight of this developing story. let's begin with abc7 news reporter lisa, who is live from near where flames first broke out in san francisco's burnal heights neighborhood. >> reporter: more than 150 firefighters have been in and out here tonight. take a look behind me. you can see they are still spraying down those store fronts. they want to make sure nothing flares up again tonight. thick smoke hung over bernal heights for hours as fire ripped through six buildings at mission and 29th streets. early indications are the fire started near the rear of cole's

hardware store. >> we do have some, you know, products with chemicals. and we don't really know how it start of course. but unfortunately that might have helped spread it across the whole building. >> reporter: this was an aggressive fire. firefightersh a hard time with it. at one point they had to get out of the building and fight it from the outside. >> within the cole's hardware building we may be dealing with some flammables. and i believe the prevailing wind coming out of the west, blowing west to east, when those windows in the rear of the building broke it added wind and oxygen to the fire that caused it to increase in intensity. >> reporter: the intense flames created so much smoke that a shelter in place order was issued for everyone in fife blocks this area. the owner of this chicken restaurant watched around him. >> my biggest concern is for the neighborhood and the people that live in the building and the safety of everybody around.

>> reporter: so he opened up his kich tony firefighters and volunteers because doing something made accepting this a little easier. down the street a man started sandbagging a neighbor's business. in this neighborhood, every little bit helps. and the air quality was tested tonight and came out all clear. meantime, everyone is asked to avoid this area. firefighters will be on scene until around noon tomorrow. live in bernate heights, abc7 news. >> the flames first began around 2:30 this afternoon. in this time lapsed video you can see the fire quickly spreading from our sutro tower camera. within minutes officials sounded a third, fourth then fifth alarm. around 6:30 san francisco fire declared the fire contained. thankfully no one was seriously hurt. but what's next for those residents who lost their homes? abc7 news reporter sergio can tanna picks up our team coverage from the shelter residents are

spending the night at. sergio. >> reporter: i just checked in with the shelter. they tell me there are 35 people who have checked in tonight for immediate shelter through the evening. the fire department tells me there were 40 people who were displaced but they expect that number to increase. as the fire raged in the distance, the displaced residents trickled into the safeway parking lot. kids, adults, and seniors. all of them without a home tonight. some in shock. what was it like leaving home? >> stressful. i was stressed. >> scary. >> i woke up to a fire alarm and i thought maybe somebody was playing with it and so i went outside to see what was going. police and fire deputy was get out. >> reporter: tonight they will try to determine how much of their lives in san francisco can be salvaged. the mayor said the city will help them transition. >> housing is a huge crisis.

>> reporter: the residents will have a temporary shelter for several nights and they will get timely updates on when they can retrieve their belongings if any survived the fire. this is also the first fire since the new good samaritan ordinance. under the new law landlords can provide a home at the same rent controlled price that a resident lost in a fire for up to two years. the idea of the good samaritan law is to give people who have been displaced by a fire a window of about a year or two years for that place to be rebuilt so they can move back in. reporting live in san francisco, sergio can tanna, abc7 news. we want to thank all the viewers who sent in pictures and video of the fire today. when you see news where you live, take a photo or video and share it with us using hashtag

at church and 15th. in january of last year one person was killed and six people injured in a fire at mission and 22nd. the last fire same september 4th 2014 in a commercial building. firefighters are making progress on several wildfires currently burning across the state. crews now have the 7800 acre sherpa fire 45% contained near santa barbara. they say winds didn't materialize last night. no homes were burned but hundreds remain evacuated. in amador county a 210 acre fire is expected to be fully contained tomorrow afternoon. cal-fire tweeted out these pictures of a 240 acre wildfire in san bernardino county. it is 80% contained. it has damaged four structures. danville police arrested a

man they believe broke into a school early this evening. a silent alarm alerted officers. officers say he broke into the administration building. they found some vandalism inside. it'san unclear if anything was stolen. in oakland instead of concentrating on game seven of the nba finals tomorrow many respects are worried about it is police department. the city had its third chief in nine days as rumors swirl. >> it is embearsing. >> city lead remembers shaking their heads in disbelief over a growing sex scandal scandal. at least 14 officers may have had an inappropriate prip with a teenager who goes by the name celeste. more are implicated in other departments. another scandal involving this homicide sgtd who could face charges for allowing his mistress to help write police

family, friends, and even total strangers said their final good-byes to some of the 49 people murdered during last week's nightclub massacre in orlando. you are looking at mourners packing a church to remember 21-year-old corey connell. he aspired to serve his community by becoming a firefighter. today, local first responders honored connell and his family in a special way. >> he is the type of guy that you want to work side by side with. he >> traffic accident marred one funeral. a driver collided with two sheriff's deputies he is courting a funeral procession. both deputies were badly hurt. officials say the driver who hit

nearby apartment building. so far no reports of any injuries. technology invented here in the bay area could help keep astronauts safe from threats on foreign mission like journey to mars. abc7 news anchor dan ashley has the sorry. >> reporter: the view from the international space station may be out of this world but some bay area scientists are more concerned about what might be lurking on the inside. >> we don't know what microbes might be there. >> reporter: crystal jiang and her team at the lawrence livermore lab helped create a device that can quickly identify more than 12,000 type of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. >> we are determining what microbes are present. >> reporter: tracking them could be critical in space. because months in low gravity can cause changes even in living

organisms raising potential that a microbe could evolve into something more dangerous. >> the crew's health may be affected. >> this is how you go to the bathroom in space. >> reporter: to track what tiny visitors might be doing they are planning to gather samples across the spacetation that is roughly the size of a football field. >> where they sleep, where they exercise, where they eat, where they go to the rest room. these are the areas where we are curious to see how the micro organisms change over time. >> they have trained the astronauts to take samples and developed a sophisticated air sampling system. after six months samples will be sent back to earth for analysis. the long term goal? >> we want to have counter-measures available in case bad bugs affects the crew. >> reporter: he says that kind of planning will be more urgent as nasa chases journeys like a mission to mars. it is a hostile environment that
