making news in america this morning, gun bills blocked. the senate voting down new measures in the wake of the orlando nightclub shooting. the bills even getting the backing from the nra. overnight the lawmakers who voted against the bills explaining why they did it. and fighting fires is becoming hard with record-setting heat fueling them right now. there are more evacuations ordered in california with the flames just 20 miles from l.a. and sending smoke over the skyline. campaign shake-up. donald trump firing his manager as surprising new details emerge overnight about his campaign finances. plus, the teenager who admits going to a rally to shoot the republican nominee, presumptive nominee. and the runner mauled by a bear during a marathon. the attack happened just minutes from the finish line.

she's talking about her survival story. and we do say good tuesday morning, everyone. we're going to get to all those stories in just a moment but we want to start with some breaking news coming from overseas from brussels. a tense situation unfolding there this morning amid fears of a bomb attack. >> police surrounded a major shopping center and now have a man in custody. it's believed he had told authorities he was wearing some sort of bomb vest. but police now say the man was not actually carrying any explosives. the belgian capital has been on high alert since the terror attacks there in march at the brussels airport and the subway station. those bombings killed 32 people and we, of course, will stay on top of this breaking story. but first we want to turn our focus right now to the battle over gun control stalling once again on capitol hill. the senate rejected all four gun control measures that resurfaced after the orlando nightclub shooting largely along party lines. >> as expected, republicans and

democrats failed to find common ground again. abc's lauren lyster has the latest from washington. good morning, lauren. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. yeah, those votes largely falling along party lines. democrats calling the republican proposals weak. republicans saying the democrats' plans are too restrictive. in orlando, more tributes to victims and candles lit to help the city grieve and heal while in washington -- >> the motion is not agreed to. >> reporter: -- senate lawmakers take on four pieces of gun control legislation, not one receiving the 60 votes necessary to pass. >> the orlando attack again exposed a dangerous loophole in our law. >> reporter: a measure from each side was aimed at keeping suspected extremists from acquiring guns, people like orlando shooting suspect omar mateen who had been on the fbi's radar before and pledged allegiance to isis during the attack. one plan was aimed at blocking the sales, the other at delaying them but requiring a court action to block. >> our colleagues want to make

avenue near pulse nightclub. traffic began flowing again late last night. some nearby businesses are expected to re-open today, and we're learning more about how law enforcement handled the nightmare. the justice department releasing transcripts of the gunman's 911 call. among the revelations police stormed the club after the shooter threatened to strap explosive vests to some of the hostages. authorities emphasize there was no gunfire in the three hours it took to take down that gunman. u.s. attorney general loretta lynch will be in orlando today. the dangerous heat across the southwest is fueling wildfires and proving to be deadly. at least five deaths are now linked to the triple-digit temperatures in arizona. officials advise limiting outdoor activities and drinking plenty of water. they're also asking people to conserve electricity after many cities set records yesterday. and right now in southern california hot, dry winds are fanning two new wildfires only about 20 miles northeast of downtown l.a. the fish and reservoir fires are

about two miles apart and together have scorched 4,500 acres so far. hundreds of people have been ordered from their homes with voluntary evacuations for many others, but not everyone will go. >> i'm afraid to see anybody get hurt. i'm afraid to see the houses go. but you know what, everybody fights their whole life to have something. i don't want to lose it. i'll fight until it kills me to save it. >> now, the smoke from those fires is also looming over the area. this photo shows the downtown l.a. skyline in the foreground there, and the fires have triggered an air quality smoke advisory for some parts of l.a. county. and it's expected to be another hot day in the southwest. 112 degrees in phoenix. 113 in palm springs and that heat is now expanding. nearly 100 in salt lake city and denver. now to the race for the white house. donald trump has fired one of his closest aides less than a month before the republican convention. campaign manager corey lewandowski was abruptly let go

amid strained relations with gop leaders as well as donors. sources say there was increasing friction between lewandowski and trump's own children and a new poll has hillary clinton leading trump by seven points. trump responded to the shake-up last night on fox news. >> he's a good guy, he's a friend of mine, but i think it's time now for a different kind of a campaign. we ran a small, beautiful, well-unified campaign. it worked very well in the primaries. i'm really proud of him. he did a great job but we're going to go a little bit of a different route. >> all right, so it's a different style. >> a little different style. >> well, another trump adviser, michael caputo, appeared to celebrate lewandowski's departure, and he tweeted this photo from "the wizard of oz" saying, ding dong, the witch is dead along with a link to the song. caputo resigned shortly after. meantime, details about one man's apparent plot to kill donald trump. 19-year-old british national michael sanford is in u.s. federal custody this morning.

prosecutors say sanford grabbed a police officer's gun at a trump rally over the weekend in las vegas. he was stopped by other security at the event. authorities say sanford admitted he'd try to kill trump again if he was set free. and with just months to go before the general election, it looks like the trump campaign is essentially broke. new financial records show the trump camp began this month with just $1.3 million in cash on hand while hillary clinton's campaign began the month with $42 million in the bank. the latest addition to the clinton clan is waking up in his own crib this morning. chelsea clinton and her husband left a manhattan hospital yesterday with their second child, aidan. grandparents hillary clinton and former president bill clinton were also there to see him off. and another celebration, you might say. the city of cleveland has one more full day to prepare for a celebration more than a half century in the making. that celebration, of course, is

this is a scary sight in western new york as an inflatable bounce house was carried away by the wind. if that wasn't bad enough that it gets just thrown up like a helium balloon, you then see it tangled up in high voltage power lines. it all happened about 40 feet off the ground. luckily the kids that had been jumping around in the bounce house all exited before this happened, so no one got hurt. a risky rescue is under way in what right now may be the coldest place on earth. a small plane is already in antarctica and set to head to the south pole to pick up a contractor who needs medical treatment. keep in mind average temperatures there are 70 below and the plane has to land on skis on compacted snow in total darkness because the sun won't come up again until august. the lawsuit accusing starbucks of shorting its customers may proceed. the class action suit accuses the coffee chain of systemically serving lattes that are 25% less than promised. the federal judge did not rule

on the case's merits and dismissed three of the eight claims. but he said the basic premise is plausible. starbucks says the suit is without merit. and u.s. airlines, well, they continue to earn solid profits thanks in large part to fees that they're charging travelers. baggage fees totaled nearly a billion dollars in the first quarter, up $100 million. then there are the reservation change or cancellation fees which were another profit center. $745 million, and that's just in the first quarter alone. well, when we come back, a new strategy to prevent breast cancer. the new discovery being called the holy grail of stopping the disease. and he's just 11 years old but already getting a scholarship offer or a few of them actually from basketball. see who his famous father is. crowd sounds ]

put them on the path to the really grail of breast cancer research. an amazing story out of new mexico. a woman survives a literal run-in with a mother bear by playing dead. take a look at karen williams. she is a marathon runner near the end of a mountain race when she saw a black bear running at her. williams apparently frightened one of its cubs. she tried to protect herself but the bear was on her too fast. >> she was ripping at my upper arms. i had my hands over my head, and i screamed because it hurt, and she didn't like me screaming, and so she gave me a whack on the side of the head with her left paw. >> wow. so williams eventually curled up on the ground and played dead. she said the bears left after ten minutes. williams suffered some cuts as well as that broken eye socket. and former nascar driver mike wallace is recovering from injuries he says he suffered after a brutal attack, as well. wallace was leaving a concert in charlotte on friday night when he claims three men he had never met before punched him and kicked him and also attacked his
