san jose police chief garcia said that officer michael katherman should be remembered as an exceptional officer. >> it is a very difficult day. it is the day, a combination of a day to mourn but his life is also something to celebrate. not only was he an exceptional police officer but he was a better man. i hope that we can leave family, friends and the community today with a sense of who died for

their community today. >> they learn about officer katherman in a 2 1/2 hour service that will begin in a few moments. chief garcia emphasized san jose is covered with the help of officers and other sheriff deputies from around the region so that the colleagues of officer katherman can be here at s.a.p. center to pay their respects. we are at s.a.p. center in downtown san jose for abc7 news. >> david, thank you, you may have seen the sky 7 video of all of the officers lining up. i am told there are 400 police officers who ride motorcycles who have come from the bay area and across the country to pay tribute today. >> that is very fitting as he was a motorcycle officer himself in an unfortunate fatal collision last week. loved by so many. leaving behind a wife and two young sons. you are seeing the pictures.

you can see he was athletic growing up in the south bay and living in hollister raising his family. today, some of his mates from the academy will speak at service to begin shortly along with the assistant chief of the lived and chief garcia who was talking with david. and many others will remember him fondly for his life and legacy. >> and san jose had to go through this spokesperson just a year ago when they lost another officer under very different circumstances from this, circumstances aside, any time you lose an officer it is a huge impact fought just on the immediate police department involved, but, also, the entire community. they are seeing just a huge bit of support from the community and officers across the region as they go through this a second time. >> absolutely we went to let our viewers know when the service

begins we will take it live on air in its entirety and you can watch it on the news app or on abc7news.com live streamed. after the memorial there is another motorcade in gilroy from s.a.p. center to interstate 280 and united states 101 to the memorial park in gilroy. his family has asked for privacy so that will not be covered but we wanted to show you this map of the route so be aware there could be periodic closures as the procession moves through. >> the city of san jose has been through this memorial before as i mentioned, the last san jose police officer who died in the line of duty was michael johnson shot and killed while responding to a call of an armed man who barricaded himself in an apartment on march 24 of last area. johnson was a 14-year veteran of

the san jose police force. it wasn't much time in between the two deaths of these officers. it has been a tough career or so for the san jose police department. but the police department has said they are very encouraged by the outpouring of support that has gotten from the public as well as from other agencies that have come out in droves to support them today, taking on the shifts that san jose police officers would normally be doing their patrols so the officers could attend the service this morning. >> you are seeing, of course, some video, of michael johnson who we lost just last year. >> i witnessed to let the viewers know that abc7 is covering the funeral service society to start in a minute or two, for officer michael katherman. you are looking at the slide show if you were inside the s.a.p. center, now, this is what you will be looking at,

pictures, documenting officer asking -- katherman growing up in the south by, the live he has touched, his on boys,ly wife, the many friends in the department and athletic endeavours, his joy for living, all remembered today in a touching service that is attended by thousands and thousands. including a picture of him playing baseball as a little boy and with his wife and children. a senior somber, sad day, but, also, a celebration of his life. >> to remind you, just a week ago, we lost the officer. this was a crash while he was on duty riding his police motorcycle. he was going straight. a minivan was trying to turn in front of him and he collided with the minivan. there was a person on the scene would ran to his aid and the witness used officer michael

katherman's police radio to call it in and to get assistance out this for the officer. unfortunately, the officer did not make it and he was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at the hospital. the driver of the minivan did stay and cooperate with the police investigation. >> we have a picture from early this morning, u.s. to give you an idea for the somber nature of the procession arrival at the s.a.p. center, we have some video of officers standing in formation, outside, saluting officer katherman as the hearst and casket arrived at the s.a.p. center for the service that will be underway shortly. it was a very touching moment to see. in addition to the officer standing in formation, there was also just a huge turn out of every day citizens, the community, shows residents, the people that he served were lining the streets, as well, and we saw many people carrying the

american flag. we saw others gist saluting. there is a lot of people, many people, out had remembering officer michael katherman today. >> they have to get hundreds of people into the s.a.p. center who were outside of the procession. we are waiting for this to begin. it will begin momentarily. while we wait for that and when it starts we will be back to it we go over to mike nicco to tell us what to expect for the forecast. mike, i understand it will be a warm day for a lot of people especially living inland? >> i understand about 88 degrees but in los gatos and to morgan hill and gilroy, low-to-mid 90s, and even 97 is possible in gilroy. now, outside right now with our sutro tower, it is hazy and a "spare the air" day. right now, the levels are oh case but the mores for civil fuels the worst it will be the we have the highest level of sunshine on the index and we

will see the ozone building so in the afternoon and early evening, we will find the smog is the worst the temperatures today are 5-11 degrees warmer-than-average and mid-70s in san francisco and oakland 79 but everyone else in the mid-80s to mid-90s. antioch will flirt with 100. san it rose, 90. oakland, 79. san jose, 88. san francisco is comfortable at 73. there will be neighborhoods reaching 77 or 78 around twin peaks. dress for temperatures at the a's with temperatures in the 60s. my seven-day forecast shows the sea breeze kicking in, the hottest air will move to the east, temporarily, tomorrow and on thursday. that is why you see the decline in the temperatures. friday it starts to work its way back to us, and that is why you are seeing the uptick.

accused of having improper relationship, a sexual relationship, with a teenager. oakland mayor has received national attention for the reful having door of police chiefs, spoke to abc7 reporter, amy hollyfield, and amie is at the moscone center. >> we just got off with her and asked of the sent for a new police chief and in the vetting processing be different from what she used in the past. oakland mayor is a cohost here at the bay area women's summit in san francisco. along with mayor lee of san francisco. the questions on her police department surrounds her. three chiefs have come and gone in just over a week. with different scandals swirling around the department. including accusations of sexual misconduct and racist text superintendent by officers. she told us she does not have a tie line for slashing a permanent chief. right now she is focused on coming up with a selection plan

officer michael katherman's memorial service. he is being remembered right now in a public memorial at the s.a.p. center followed by a burial in gilroy. that part will be private. just for the family. >> just 34. he was with the force for a little more than a decade, 11 years. he leaves behind two sons and a wife. we saw some photos of his sons at a slide show at c.h.p. center. people in the center were able to see. >> there was a big procession this morning that began at 9:45 if you just joining us. that brought him from the funeral home in los gatos through city streets where many people lined the streets to pay their respects. the procession continued through several cities until it arrived in downtown san jose now at the s.a.p. center. many police officers across the region began to gather here

early. we saw san jose fire engines hoisting a large american flag in front of the arena at the intersection of santa clara and autumn street as people saluted and officers as officer michael katherman's casket arrived and they saluted. officers wore a black badge with his badge number which was 3900, june 14, last week, "end of watch." he was involved in a traffic collision that he did not survive. this is the second loss for the san jose lived in a little over a year. this is a sad reminder but, also, a celebration of officer michael katherman's life and his 11 years of service to the san jose police department and the people of san jose. we are speaking right new only because we are still working on the s.a.p. center audio that is
