to one another when they think nobody is listening. you'll hear from the woman who revealed trading among high ranking officials and she is now facing a scandal of her own. >> i want you guys to be safe. >> reporter: pennsylvania's attorney general, kathleen kane, running away from danger is not her m.o. >> we can get out, right? >> i wouldn't. but you're the boss. >> we're getting out. >> reporter: on this day she's in philadelphia with the gun violence task force to find the fugitive accused of attempted murder. but she says the real danger she never saw coming, not from criminals, but from colleagues. putting her own career in jeopardy. >> porngate scandal. 398 pages, much of it hard core porn.

>> reporter: a trove of emails her office discovered and made public full of racism, sexism and pornography. what was your immediate reaction? >> oh, my god. >> reporter: the scandal has been dubbed porngate. some of the state's highest ranking officials. >> a number of judges, a number of prosecutors in law enforcement. >> reporter: all in the state's email server. >> i couldn't believe there was violence involved. this wasn't just some play boy photos. >> the real issue here is the misogyny and the racism. >> reporter: for veteran public defender, mark bookman, these represent something more troubling about the justice system. >> if i know the judge has sent these kind of emails and i look at the prosecutor who is not only close friends with the judge but exchanging these

emails and thinks the same way, i don't think i'm getting a fair shake in that court room. >> reporter: two of the supreme court justices, including michael eakin. seamus mccaffrey could not be reached. and they lead an independent investigation sfwlp what we investigation. >> what we're seeing is what would be offensive to any reasonably minded person. >> reporter: they spent months searching emails searching for

things like the president's name. even the first lady wasn't off limits. with this supposed depiction of michelle obama's high school reunion. >> you look at this and say you got to be kidding me? >> reporter: these are the battles kathleen kane grew up expecting to fight. a blue collar kid from scranton, pa. modest. >> modest. yes. i had two brothers too, and a twin sister. >> reporter: she became a rising star in pennsylvania's democratic party, earning bill clinton's endorsement while running for attorney general. >> i wasn't about to ask anyone's permission. >> reporter: she won not just becoming the first state's democratic attorney general but the first woman. >> my flaphilosophy was i am wh am. >> when she exposed the emails, the good old boy club was furious and out for blood, hers. >> the hard core pornography shared between state actors, that is not boys being boys. it's assault upon our criminal justice system and quite honestly, it's unacceptable. >> reporter: so what happened to the self-style maverick who exposed the scandal? >> we're here today to announce the filing of charges against

pennsylvania attorney general, kathleen kane. >> reporter: amid calls for a resignation. >> i'm calling on her to step aside. >> reporter: the supreme court has suspended her law license. she could face jail time when her trial starts in august. your law license has been suspended? >> yes. >> reporter: it's kind of hard to be attorney general if you're not a lawyer? >> no p. >> reporter: when is the last time there was a attorney general who wasn't an attorney? >> when is the last time there was a woman and a democrat who didn't have to go through what i'm going through? >> she's accused of lying about it under oath. have you broken the law? >> of course not. as they say, you can indict a ham sandwich. >> reporter: but her critics, including mark bookman say she brought it on herself. >> i don't defend our attorn ea general for her behavior. i think it's atrocious in everywhere. >> reporter: when a former

prosecutor from her office al j alleg allegedly leaked a potentially damaging fact against her to the press, she said in an email, "this is war." >> reporter: by all accounts there's bad blood between you and frank fina? >> i think it's unfair because i wouldn't know him if i fell over him. >> reporter: you never met him? >> once at staff meeting for five minutes. >> reporter: kane later admitted to sharing the information but says it was not illegal. fina declined "nightline's" request for comment. he's part of a group accused of selecti selectively leaking emails. according to this kane used intimidation, attempted blackmail for the use of silencing her critics. some would say you're admitting to boxing outside your weight class. you weren't up for the challenge?

you didn't know how the game was played. >> i don't think anyone could know how this game was played. and they've done everything possible for me. there's been a couple grand jurys, a suspension of my law license. the only thing that hasn't been done and i'm not being glub, out and out assassination. >> reporter: many of her wounds, they argue, were self inflicted. >> whether there's a good old boys network or not, her own vindictiveness that appears to have brought her down. >> reporter: there are those who stand with the attorney general and those who stand with pundits. where are you? >> i don't know how anyone could stand on either side of the issue. the attorney general has made a million missteps. >> reporter: according to kane's missteps, according to bookman, releasing the emails of her supposed rivals while initially minimizing the dozens sent and received by her own sister. kane eventually released those emails, including one she

received herself. >> the decision today i am comfortable with. >> reporter: in february, the attorney general announced she will not seek reelection. >> while i love pennsylvania, i love my sons first. >> reporter: from darling of the democratic party to doting mom, her boys, christopher and zack, have softened the fall. how do you explain this to christopher and zack? >> i explain to them that there comes a certain cost sometimes with doing the right thing and it is not always easy. >> reporter: her critics and supporters do agree kane is a fighter. despite all her troubles, she still puts in a full day's work. recently making headlines covering a sex abuse scandal. call her a casualty of a corrupt system or culpable for her own demize, she's a rising star no longer. but the thing that still drives

the campaign against the chinese dog festival began when she saw some of the photos that animal activists were able to record. >> you can never erase those images from your mind once you've seen them. >> reporter: for at least the last six years the chinese city of yulin has been home of the dog meat festival, home to tourists seeking exotic food. they had signs offering boiled dog meat and dog meat with mashed garlic. apparently not bothered by the groeing uproar over both the idea of eating man's best friend and the gruesome techniques of slaughter houses. >> i think we should put pressure on china to stop it. my partner, john who's on the ground there is intracted with them. >> been here for the past 12 days and two days before we arrived, we got word that our activists had stopped a dog meat

truck. so, we've spent the past week working with the chinese activists to stabilize the 300 dogs and cats rescued from the dog meat truck. >> reporter: he says the activists are starting to have a impact. >> the brutal slaughtering is going on more behind the scenes but still in back alley. it's definitely still occurring on a daily basis. >> reporter: and now it has all been caught on camera by a team of american animal activists who found what they describe as dog slaughter houses. >> the slaughter happens under cover of night. weir where e're able to obtain the dog meat slaughter that hasn't been before. >> reporter: they work for direct action anywhere and provided abc news with the video they recorded, much can't be

broadcast under abc news standards. >> many are breeds americans know very well. >> you walk towards the slaughter house and you just hear screams. >> reporter: many of the dogs waiting to be killed appear to have collars. >> they maraud the streets and will steal dogs off the street because they know they can get 40 or $50 if they ship then down to yulin. >> reporter: they claim eating dog meat on the summer solstice will bring good luck all year. it's been a tradition in china for centuries. >> it's not widespread. there are a few pockets of china that it is still ongoing and they believe dog is healthy for their body. >> reporter: the two activists said they had a close call when some of the dog meat trainers discovered what they were doing. >> two of them picked up metal poles and hitting them in their hands and i remember silting there next to wayne thinking

this might be where i die. >> reporter: the activists also found farms outside the city where dogs are raised for slaughter. >> for food, yeah. >> reporter: under chinese law it is leaggal to sell dog meat d in a statement, the chinese government called it the food preference of individuals. said the government has never supported or organized any so-called dog meat festival. but they say local authorities took them into custody when they were discovered filming. >> they released us after approximately two days of intearigation intea intear -- interrogation. >> reporter: they were able to rescue three dogs and smuggle them out of the country. >> there was a little black dog, i had to walk away from him, knowing the next day i would see
