>> i'm guessing it was planned to go faster than that when they were planning to go to the moon. in mexico, a runner greeted to something much more frightening than your normal marathon obstacles and an angry mother bear. >> that bear apparently startled, went on the attack and this morning that runner is sharing her terrifying story. here's abc's clayton sandell. >> reporter: karen williams is nursing serious bites and scratches after a run-in with an angry mother bear. >> she was ripping at my upper arms. i had my hands over my head and i screamed because it hurt. and she didn't like me screaming and so she gave me a whack on the side of my head with her left paw. >> reporter: the marathon runner was just a few miles from the finish line in new mexico sunday when she apparently surprised the bear protecting her three cubs. >> then she bit my neck and started shaking me. >> reporter: she realizes the

only way to live is to play dead until the bear leaves. >> i pretended i was dead and she kept glancing over at me. >> reporter: because the bear attacked a person, state law required she be euthanized and tested for rabies. her cubs sent to a wildlife refuge. williams was found by fellow runners about 30 minutes after the attack, airlifted to a hospital with the serious injuries. >> i've got a nice chunk out of my eyebrow that i'll have to probably get a little plastic surgery on. >> reporter: doctors say williams will make a full recovery. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> scary that o as she was screaming she could tell the louder she screamed, the more agitated and aggressive the bear got. >> that's why i don't run marathons. bear attacks. when we come back, dwyane wade exposed. literally. what you may have never known also about his secret indulgence. and "the game of thrones" cast members are in line for

good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> and i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following on this wednesday on "world news now." twin wildfires threatening los angeles suburbs. hundreds of homes have been evacuated. other wildfires are burning in southern california as well as other western states. they are aided by extremely hot weather. u.s. officials say north korea fired two powerful mid range ballistic missiles this morning. one launch appears to have failed, the other missile traveled about 250 miles, but still well short of its potential range of nearly 2,200 miles. and indiana teen in custody for allegedly supporting isis. officials say he not only was about to join the islamic state in the mideast, he was researching explosives and targets on the internet. and it was a very messy night on the pitch for the u.s. men's soccer team.

but we're going to get started right now, shall we, this half hour with the out of control wildfires in southern california. now, a pair of them raging in the san gabriel valley about 20 miles east of downtown los angeles. no structures destroyed as yet. but officials fear it's just a matter of time. so hundreds of people have been ordered to evacuate. >> it's not just people in danger but also their pets and livestock. a massive effort is under way to transport horses out of the area prompting a steady stream of horse trailers in and out. more than 160 horses are now at a nearby fairgrounds. so california doesn't have the exclusive on this. this is the scene in phoenix where a brush fire was ignited by a car on interstate 17. no buildings are threatened yet, but officials say the rugged terrain could make the fire difficult to contain. so far the sunset fire as it's called has charred some 50 acres. not surprisingly causing travel delays on the highway nearby. another wildfire in utah

likely to destroy buildings. residents and campers told to evacuate parts of pine valley. nearly 200 homes and cabins are threatened. fire fighting efforts have been hampered by near misses by drones. some aircraft carrying fire retardant. this fire destroyed more than 500 acres. >> here is a look at your weather. your weather mostly dry and comfortable in the northeast today but hot and humid in the south. some severe storms around the great lakes down into the ohio valley and some showers likely in south florida and colorado. the mercury still going to reach well over 100 in phoenix as well as albuquerque today, but a high of only 82 in los angeles. and an even 100 today in kansas city, the 90s in the deep south and in the 80s in the northeast. want to get to breaking news coming from florida's gulf coast. a search is under way this morning for a father and his

three teenaged children. the family was on its way from sarasota to ft. myers on their 29 foot sailboat on sunday. during that trip, the father called his brother and said the boat was in six foot seas. the coast guard is using both boats as well as aircraft but also asking other boaters out there to keep an eye out. now to the orlando massacre where the shooter's father confirms the gunman was buried somewhere in florida. that news comes as the attorney general meets with the victims and the man who says he reported the shooter to the fbi. abc's adrienne bankert has more. >> reporter: attorney general loretta lynch visiting orlando. >> i am so inspired by the strength and the resilience of the survivors and their loved ones. >> reporter: announcing $1 million in emergency funding from the department of justice to cover the costs of overtime, counselling, and added a staff for law enforcement as the case unfolds. lynch also meeting with lead investigators as we learn about the warning that led the fbi to question mateen in 2014.

>> i knew i had to touch base with the authorities. >> reporter: mohammed malik wrote an article for the "washington post" claiming he contacted the fbi after he says mateen boasted about watching al qaeda recruitment videos. >> i went on to ask omar what he thought of the videos and he went on to tell me they were very powerful, which raised a flag even higher for me. >> reporter: new developments, a source telling abc news a day before the attack, three plane tickets were purchased for mateen and his family to travel to san francisco. sources also telling abc news that mateen's wife saw her husband with a bag of guns and she told investigators that she tried to stop him from leaving. diane and kendis. >> adriene, thank you. meanwhile, donald trump is gearing up for a verbal assault on hillary clinton and her husband in a speech today in new york. that's a day after clinton slapped him on the economy. trump is now promising to hammer her on what he calls failed policies and bad judgment. trump also appeared to question clinton's religious faith before a group of evangelicals and warned she will be worse than

president obama. and ahead of today's speech, the trump campaign launched a anti clinton website called lyingcrookedhillary.com. they say it showcases some of clinton's "most disastrous lies to the american people." a one-time powerful u.s. congressman convicted of racketeering, fraud and money laundering. pennsylvania representative chaka fattah at the center of a scheme to pay back an illegal million dollar campaign contribution using federal grants as well as non-profit funds. fattah will be sentenced in october. prosecutors pledged to seek jail time but did not say how much. the discovery of a major weapons cache outside of a major new york city tunnel sparked fears of terrorism. police stopped three people in a truck carrying guns and ammunition, knives and more. abc's gio benitez has the details. >> reporter: the arrest taking place during morning rush hour,

at one of new york city's busiest tunnels. this distinctive truck stopped by police for a cracked windshield, but inside, an arsenal of weapons found. seven guns, including an ar-type semiautomatic rifle and a shotgun, body armor, knives, 2,000 rounds of ammunition. even a military-grade helmet. >> we had the driver exit the vehicle, and when the driver got out, he noticed a .45-caliber handgun on the driver's seat that the driver was sitting on. >> reporter: but early fears of a terror connection gave way to something else. according to police, the three people in the truck said there's a reason for it all. they were on their way to rescue a 16-year-old girl from a new york drug den. it turns out the driver, john cramsey, just lost his 20-year-old daughter to a suspected heroin overdose, according to a medical examiner. cramsey, who owns a gun range in pennsylvania, alluded to his plans to rescue the 16-year-old on facebook, telling one of his friends, quote, "how about a road trip to new york to do an extraction? saving a 16-year-old girl is priceless." and now cramsey and those two

other passengers have been charged with illegal gun possession. and in another bizarre twist, police say they found the girl cramsey was looking for, and she told them, "i don't need to be rescued." police are still investigating. gio benitez, abc news, new york. there is a 12-pound fugitive jumping around a massachusetts zoo this morning. dizzy, the monkey is on the run sort of at the forest park zoo in springfield. he escaped from his living area tuesday and has been swinging from a tree ever since. workers have tried to entice dizzy with food, but nope. he's not taking the bait. zoo officials say dizzy is not a danger to the public. looks like he's having a good time. >> he's having a fun time. >> maybe he'll come down when he's hungry. it will take quite a few benjamins if you want to see "hamilton" in chicago. >> ticket sales began tuesday for the tony award winning musical. 1,000 people were waiting outside when windows open up.

anton yelchin was pinned and killed by his own car, a 2015 jeep grand cherokee. but last summer, federal safety investigators began looking into complaints about the gear shifter in jeep grand cherokees, chrysler 300s and dodge chargers. by april of this year, chrysler issued a voluntary recall. reports of rollaway cars leading to 212 crashes and 41 injuries. but judy borlin says, a month later, she still didn't know about the recall, when her car that she thought was in park, rolled over her legs. that recall notice arrived a few days later. chrysler says the shifter design did not fail, blaming the rollaways on drivers who didn't realize their cars weren't in park. the company is now offering a software fix and a new warning system for those recalled cars, but you'll notice, in the 2016 model, chrysler has gone back to a more traditional shifter design. >> bottom line is, what chrysler has to do is to fix it, fix it soon and get it right. >> reporter: there are more than

to join isis. 18-year-old akram musleh was born in the u.s. but the fbi says he was about to travel to new york before flying on to morocco. officials say he had been expressing support for isis online for several years including posting a photo of himself in front of an isis flag. he allegedly had been searching online for information on explosives and potential targets. let's move on now to the orlando tragedy. the gunman's wife saw him leaving their home carrying a bag that looked like it contained guns. sources say noor salomon expressed her concern to the shooter and tried to stop him. police say the gunman went to pulse hours before the attack. attorney general loretta lynch visited the scene on tuesday telling survivors the good in this world far outweighs the level. >> our common humanity transcends our differences and our most effective response to terror and hatred is compassion, unity and it's love. >> the attorney general says investigators will go back over all their information to see if

there was anything they could have done better in figuring out the gunman was a threat. and the gunman's father tells abc news that he's been buried somewhere in florida. now to the wildfires in the west. some twin blazes in the san gabriel foothills just outside of l.a. are raging out of control. the extremely hot weather, winds and rugged terrain are making the fires very tough to fight. while no buildings have been lost, officials are worried it's just a matter of time. let's get more now from abc's matt gutman. >> reporter:hose two fires perched just outside metro l.a., threatening to merge into one explosive inferno. aircraft buzzing canyon walls and tree tops, the flames seeming to leap up at the choppers. named the fish and reservoir fires, they've devoured over 5,000 acres in a single day and spewed embers skyward like volcanoes overnight. one of the fires allegedly caused when this pick-up crashed off the road. >> mandatory evacuations to the residents. >> reporter: officials ordering hundreds to flee their homes. this family now packing up what's most important. her three kids.

>> it's very terrifying to see all the fire, just imagining it coming down. >> reporter: one of the reasons this fire exploded is because of this terrain. it is incredibly steep here. now, fire crews haven't been able to make their way up these steep mountain walls, so, the only way to fight this fire has been the air attack. with little wind, the heat has kept these fires alive. that heat wave topping out at 118 degrees in phoenix, blamed for five deaths. paramedics responding to more than 100 calls for those suffering in the blistering temperatures. these firefighters are facing impossible conditions here. there is heat. there is this incredibly steep terrain. brush that hasn't burned in decades, even cactuses here. matt gutman, abc news, duarte, california. the faa has issued its first formal rules for commercial drone use. the new regulations clear the way for businesses to use drones weighing less than 55 pounds without special permission starting in august. but operators would have to keep drones within sight at all times which means those anticipated

our top story is the wildfires in the west. aided by the extremely hot and dry conditions. temperatures have been well over 100 degrees with gusty winds helping to fuel those fires even more. two of them are within 20 miles of downtown l.a. adding smoke to those unhealthy conditions. there are also fires in other parts of southern california as well as neighboring states. abc's stephanie ramos has more. >> reporter: massive wildfires are burning across the west. even in alaska. >> massive fire in back of our neighborhood. >> reporter: a skyline of smoke in california. two fast-moving fires in the los angeles area devouring dry brush. the fires scorching at least 5400 acres. >> our big threat today is still that left side of the fire. that still is a very uncontrolled flank of the fire. >> reporter: the two separate wild fires now being called by a single name, the san gabriel complex fire. its flames chasing people from their homes.

the street battles have fueled exodus of families from their homes, displacing more than 85,000 people so far. camps for refugees are running out of space as well as supplies. the u.s. says it's sending an additional $20 million in emergency aid. here at home, three pennsylvania residents were arrested with an arsenal of weapons at the holland tunnel in new jersey. that's the main tunnel that heads into new york city. police say the group is not linked to terrorism. instead claiming to be on their way to new york to rescue a 16-year-old girl from a drug den. the driver had recently lost his daughter to a suspected overdose. now to the orlando massacre where we are learning more about the shooter's movements that night. police say the gunman went to pulse two hours before the killings, left, and then came back. investigators think he was checking the club's security. also abc news learned the shooter's wife saw him what looked like a bag of guns before he left home for the last time and the gunman's father says he's been buried somewhere in florida.

and florida governor rick scott says he'll appeal fema's decision to deny his state $5 million in emergency funds in the aftermath of those shootings. scott says the money would help cover costs like law enforcement response and counseling for the victims. attorney general loretta lynch announced the state will receive a $1 million grant from the justice department. word this morning of another alligator attack in central florida. a 58-year-old man was bitten in the leg while checking on horses on his rural property. the victim remained alert and talking while airlifted to the hospital. according to police. this is a photo they released. this eight to nine-foot alligator was caught and killed. 2-year-old boy killed by that alligator at disney world has been laid to rest. the funeral masses in omaha, nebraska for lane graves was limited to friends and family. the toddler was dragged into the water last week near the grand floridian resort. the graves family has established a charitable

foundation in his name. a u.s. congressman chaka fattah has been convicted of racketeering, fraud and money laundering. fattah was at the center of a scheme to pay back a legal million dollar campaign contribution using federal grants and non-profit funds. he will be sentenced in october. prosecutors pledged to seek jail time but did not say how much. all is in place to rescue a sick worker from a u.s. science station on antarctica. a rescue plane landed successfully after a daring nine-hour trip in the dark and cold. after resting for ten hours, the four-person crew will attempt to bring the sick worker out to a british base on the antarctic peninsula. a second worker is also ill but it hasn't been decided yet whether to bring that person out, as well. normally, there are no flights to the science stations from february to october because it is just too risky. for those of you who crave girl scout cookies all year round, we have some good news as long as you don't mind doing some baking of your own.
