a home is destroyed and several others are damaged in a fast-moving grass fire that also scorched an east bay trail. this was one of several fires that kept firefighters busy on this hot day around the bay area. good evening. i'm eric thomas. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin glees yas live in antioch with the story on this fire. >> reporter: i just got late word the fire started in the back of this house. and the homeowner failed to put a cigarette out properly. as a result the fire quickly spread to his neighbor's house. and everything inside is destroyed. huge 50-foot flames whipped across the back of homes on burrwood way. it didn't take long before the fire took on a life of its own. >> the problem became more complex when the wind in the

grass ran the fire from here down to deer valley road. >> it was just devastating. it blew up in a matter of two minutes. just gone. then it jumped to this housetop. it took over the whole hill. >> reporter: the hillside burned fast. firefighters attacked it from the contra costa canal while homeowners on top of the hill holesed down their decks. >> very scary. because everything's dry in the back. we have a little wind going on. it's very hot outside. so it does put a lot of houses at risk. >> reporter: linda jones' house was closest to the ignition site. the flames first swept across her backyard then quickly came into the house. >> it's all i saw was burning. i grabbed my dog and went out the front door. >> reporter: two of her three cats were found safe. firefighters were able to salvage a few things like photo albums and things that belonged to her late husband. >> it's hard watching my home go up in smoke. >> reporter: the fire threatened those who live more than a block away from where it started. firefighters moved fast to get

those people out of their homes just in case. while the cause of the fire is considered accidental, the homeowner whose cigarette started the fire could face charges for negligence and reckless endangerment. >> as crews were responding to the fire they found a marijuana grow operation in a house a couple of doors down. antioch police accidentally discovered 800 pot plants at the home as they were going door to door investigating the cause of the fire. they seize the plants worth an estimated $1 million in street value. police tell us two people were arrested. the pot-growing operation had nothing to do with the fire. on top of the antioch fire, contra costa county firefighters had hands full with a grass fire near highway 4. it broke out at willow pass and ebora roads about an hour before the antioch incident. crews were able to put out the fire with air tankers and a cal fire helicopter. firefighters say this could have been worse. >> it could have come down and

jumped the freeway and we'd be chasing it up the hill. or get into some other stuff, communications towers, a church up the street. could have been significantly worse. >> reporter: the fire was contained in about an hour. cal fire crews will stay on the scene looking for hot spots, no injuries reported. firefighters in alameda county were busy with a brush fire. one scorch the more than 200 acres near the alta mont pass this afternoon. smoke briefly caused i-580 to be closed because drivers couldn't see. that fire was contained about an hour ago. the alta mont pacifier was one of three fires that crews dealt with in the area. now to that deadly wildfire in kern county near the lake isabella area. human remains have been found in that raging fire that killed two people and destroyed 150 homes. the fire has burned more than 35,000 acres. abc news reporter tina wood worth has more from kern county. >> reporter: california's largest wildfire engulfing home after home in near minutes.

at least 150 now destroyed. 35,000 acres up in flames. >> we still have a very ugly fire out there in extremely dry fuel with these winds. we have a monster out there. >> reporter: the fire tearing through so quickly an elderly couple could not escape. >> we have mpl confirmed we have at least two fatalities. >> reporter: and tonight the land and air assault on the fire proving futile. officials dropping containment levels to zero. the governor declaring a state of emergency for kern county. wind has been the biggest concern, several downed power lines. this one has been hanging in the street since yesterday afternoon. power is out to the whole area. authorities telling residents they fear for their lives if they return home so evacuation orders are still in place with at least 2,500 homes at risk. >> so many people on this block alone that i know have lost their homes, lost everything. this is bad. >> reporter: jessica walsh's grandparents' home burned down.

>> they're definitely not coming back here until the okay is given. i'm very thankful that they're alive. >> reporter: homes that were destroyed are still smoldering and now authorities are getting reports of looting. residents are concerned not only may they have no place to come home to but they're being robbed. authorities say they hope to have people back in their homes within days, not weeks. bay area strike teams are in kern county helping with the firefighting efforts. gilroy's fire department posted this photo yesterday of teams from santa clara county. a team from the livermore/pleasanton fire department arrived. crews from san may theriot and alameda counties have been dispatched. weather isn't helping firefighters. temperatures are about to get hotter. we'll check in with abc 7 news meteorologist lisa argent for a check on the weather. >> you're right, we're looking at at least three, maybe four days of triple-digit heat in our inland valleys. right now we're starting out

with clear skies. still 70s around delta and antioch. 58 san francisco. a couple of patches of fog may form overnight. 5:00 in the morning 60s. concord, vallejo. 73 in antioch. by 11:00, 8:00 we're looking at temperatures near 80 in antioch. speaking of antioch, take a look at the week ahead. forecasting a high of 98 tomorrow. low relative humidity, below 15%. with temperatures at 100 or better all the way into wednesday. you can see it's going to take till thursday where we see some relief. this is a bit of an unusual pattern where we usually see a day or two of the extreme heat, this looks to last. we'll talk about the rest of the bay area in just a few minutes. it is pride weekend in san francisco but there's something different about this year's pride events and it's left some participants milling around not sure where to go. abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana is live with that part

of the story in the castro. >> reporter: there was no pink party in the castro this year. but that doesn't mean that people didn't come out anyway. this is is first year in a long time dyke march ended with no street party to go to. this is what happened, yugs and gridlock. police officers tried to redirect traffic. some motorists were stuck. >> i knew there would be some traffic and activity. but this is -- surpassed my expectations by far, that's for sure. >> i'm waiting for the cops to help guide us through. >> reporter: marisa's suv was nearly empty so she was hoping to fuel up but was at a standstill. for half an hour the crowd from the march and onlookers overwhelmed the corner of castro and 18th. police surged the area and eventually dissipated the crowd. lots of people had hoped to participate in what used to be called the saturday pink party, a neighborhood street event. >> our friend, he's been in the city five years, he let us know this was a big deal, that what

is going to be happening today. >> not everyone wants to pay to get into a local place to hang out. it's kind of nice to hang out in the street, dance around, meet new people. >> reporter: it was cancelled this year because of no local groups stepped in to sponsor the event. the increased security and visible police press is a response to the mass shooting at an orlando gay club two weekends ago. add the end of the castro pink party and it's a different feeling for san francisco pride. >> i it this pink party was a good outlet for that. it allowed people of all age groups to come together and dance together and have fun. whereas in the castro i feel there's a very 21-plus focus. >> reporter: for revelers who chose to go into the local clubs they were met with increased security at the door, including metal detecting wands and thorough pat downs. you'll notice there's still a lot of police officers out here tonight. the san francisco police department has really stepped up through the entire weekend. these officers are going to be out here in this neighborhood until at least 2:00 a.m. this morning.

novato, oakland, sun nenyva and all the bay area. developing news in west virginia. this is the mess left behind by devastating floods that have killed at least 24. president obama has declared a state of emergency. three counties are already approved for federal aid. about 32,000 homes and businesses are still without electricity. dozens of roads are still closed. three men died today off catalina island when the boat

they were on capsized. four other men on the boat were rescued. the 15-foot skiff overturned, a nearby fishing boat pulled some of the survivors out of the water. a coast guard helicopter saved another from the rocks. two of the men are in critical condition, the other two are in fair condition. family and friends renewed their call tonight to find a teenaged girl who vanished from vallejo exactly one month ago. 15-year-old pearl pinson disappeared near her home while heading to school on may 25th. witnesses say pinson was kidnapped that morning. >> we love you, baby! >> pinson's family and friends released balloons in her honor a few feet from where the teen was abducted. tributes to pinson cover a pedestrian overpass above i-780 where she was last seen. >> hopefully we'll find someone to help us find pearl and someone will make a phone call and bring her home.

>> pinson's disappearance triggered an amber alert. her suspected kidnapper, 19-year-old fernando castro, died in a shoot-out with police in santa barbara county one day after pinson vanished. protesters rally in oakland ahead of a city council vote that would ban shipping coal from a marine terminal now under construction in oakland. ♪ abc 7 news was at frank ogawa splauts intra. the controversial terminal is being developed at the former oakland army base. it would be the largest coal export facility in the western u.s. critics say it poses significant health and safety risks for oakland and communities near the rail lines. >> we're here to say, set council must pass the ban. pass the ban. pass the ban. >> the council takes up the ban during a special meeting scheduled for monday at 5:00 in the evening. many protesters say they plan on attending that session.

a shark warning on this warm weekend for people heading to a popular beach in pacifica. somebody spotted a shark at around 10:00 a.m. yesterday near linda mar beach, a popular surf spot. police posted signs in the area warning people about the shark. abc 7 news viewer holly sent this picture. she says it shows a shark she spotted monday at rio delmar beach. others reported seeing a great white in the area on the previous day. lisa argent is here with a check on the weather. >> hi, we're looking at warmer weather the next couple of days. although our marine influence will keep san francisco and our beaches on the cool side. so with that in mind we've got quite a temperature spread over the next three or four days. here's live doppler 7 hd. it is nice and clear. as we widen the view a big dome of high pressure building into the bay area. it's going to stay with us and keep temperatures well above normal. in fact, triple digits could come into play as soon as

tomorrow. low relative humidity. the breezy winds though, they will be confined to the shoreline and our beaches. exploratorium cam. most of the temperatures look like a typical evening in san francisco with the 50s. but notice as you get through morgan hill, upper 60s. 50 at half moon bay. even on the mild side, mountain view in san jose at 64. from our roof camera, clear sky and temperatures in the 50s. from novato to santa rosa with the drier air, numbers dropping quickly. by the delta, it's 69. inland east bay, still holding on to 70s. so it's going to be a mild evening there. but we will be looking at the temperatures over the next few days coming up pretty much everywhere. so patchy coastal fog developing. warm to hot tomorrow. heat alert for three days this week. possibly four. so the warmer temperatures now allowing for numbers to stay up through the upper 50s to low 60s in antioch. 53 in morgan hill.

numbers around 51 half moon bay and santa cruz. low clouds, fog, this will allow temperatures to stay on the cool side. in fact, in the 60s in and around pacifica, half moon bay. check out what happens on monday. 102 in antioch. upper 90s here. look at all the reds. even around the bay, approaching the mid-80s for hayward and redwood city. taking to tuesday, this should be the hottest day with 101 in antioch. 102 in fairfield. look at the upper 80s from oakland. 81 forecasted perhaps in san francisco. by wednesday we still have the heat here. so heat relief of course at the beaches. santa cruz upper 70s to near 80 on monday. patchy morning fog. we'll look for numbers near 70 around stinson. 60s pacifica, linda mar, half moon bay. 92 in los gatos. look at reds from menlo park, palo alto, mountain view, redwood city, upper yits.

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good evening. tonight's headlines, a busy day for firefighters in the east bay. several grass fires and this house fire in antioch left crews in alameda and contra costa county counties with their hands full. firefighters have determined a cigarette started this fire which spread fast from wind and hot weather. friends and family members released balloons in honor of missing vallejo teen pearl pinson who was kidnapped may 27th. her suspected kidnapper died in a shoot-out with police in santa barbara county one day after pinson vanished. san francisco pride festivities drew a huge crowd tonight. the annual dyke march began at doer recess park and ended in the castro. many revelers expected a pink saturday celebration but organizers moved it to the mission district this year. states of emergency are in effect tonight in west virginia and california. out west the massive effort to stop a raging wildfire.

coal mine country, at least 24 people have died in historic floods. abc news reporter chuck sivertsen has the story. >> reporter: the search for the missing is still under way after epic floods devastated wide parts of west virginia. one family trying to find their son's girlfriend who lived in this home that was ripped off its foundation. >> and i said, the last thing they knew of her was somebody threw her a rope, then they never heard any more. so we don't know if she got through. >> reporter: the rapidly rising waters trapped hundreds of people in their homes. >> more and more terrifying as it kept going. >> reporter: 48 hours after the waters rose, over 100 homes are damaged or swept away. brian christie lost his home. >> tragic. it's deetly destroyed and everything in it. >> it's going to take years, probably, to come from this disaster. >> reporter: out west in california, devastation of a different kind. walls of fire engulfing home

>> democrat hillary clinton did not campaign today but she released this ad. it criticizes trump for his response to the brexit vote. scary moments today when a bear cub escaped at the zoo in columbus, ohio. the bear scaled a 12-foot-hyphens. the zoo went on lockdown for about 15 minutes until workers captured the 7-month-old cub joan, named for rocker joan jett. joan and another rescue cub arrived at the zoo a few months ago. today's escape happened while the cubs were being moved to a new enclosure. sometimes great power does not come with great wealth. the wife of maine governor paul la page has taken a summer job at a waitress to earn extra cash. that's ann lepage taking orders at a seafood restaurant. her husband holds the distinction of being the lowest-paid governor in the u.s., earning $70,000 a year. when she needed extra cash to supplement their income she turned to a favorite local income. >> it's all about the money.

african-american musicians and civil rights leaders were honored in the east bay today in grand fashion. abc 7 news was at the impact hub in oakland as a hawaiian luau helped kick off a dance event. the multi-cultural event is in its seventh year. barbecue grill masters competed for top honors at the silicon valley barbecue competition. abc news was at central park in santa clara where teams seared up barbecue. one team showed off their app-controlled barbecue adapter. the technology wasn't enough to beat an old-fashioned recipe from a husband and wife team. vincent and alexa are originally

from the south bay. it's the 30th barbecue competition they've won. some kids dream of being pro basketball players. one local man had a different dream. luke kent wanted to become a professional arm wrestler. as jonathan bloom pointed out, luke is vying for a world title this weekend in a sport that requires some serious training. >> close your hands. go. on go, an explosion. >> reporter: luke kent has been preparing for this a long time. >> this is probably the biggest tournament i've ever been to. >> welcome back to las vegas for the world arm wrestling league's lightweight championship. >> reporter: he'll be on the world stage in a sport that started right here where he grew up. luke is a mechanic. he always liked working on cars. as a teen he found another use for that right arm. when did you realize you were really good at this? >> when only one person could beat me. >> reporter: luke's competed on espn2 and the amc reality show "game of arms."
