weekend and it has happened before and there might be a problem with part of the fleet. we are live at headquarters with new details. leann. >> reporter: i think people in the east oakland neighborhood wanted to hear from the department on why these two police cars were racing down 38th and tarrington, but instead police are focusing on the safety of the officers after three mysterious car fires. a surveillance camera captured the moment when the ford police suv slammed into another police car, a crown victoria and chasing a suspect and they watched as the suv caught on fire and the flames group. >> they were up to the wires up there. >> reporter: this is what both cars look like. the suv was heavily damaged by the fire. police are concerned there may be a problem with the 2014 suvs called the ford police interceptors utility, after a similar incident occurred the

night before. >> saturday evening, the officer was involved in a vehicle collision where the suv rolled over. and almost instantly, it caught fire. >> reporter: that suv was also a 2014 ford interceptor. late in 2013, the city of oakland announced it was purchasing 82 of them. we know that almost immediately after acquiring them, a parked police suv also caught on fire. again, the model, a 2014 ford interceptor. >> no one was driving it. it was parked when the car caught on fire. so the question back in 2014 is, what caused the car to catch on fire. >> reporter: the suvs are used by more than half of the country's law enforcement agencies. they are enhanced to fit the needs of police departments. they have special brakes and pursuit mode for aggressive driving and a j-turn option meaning they could drive in reverse and spin 180 degrees and continue driving. ford did not respond to our calls for a statement but three

years ago the company recalled a large number of the 2013 model cars, including the police interceptor because of a fire risk related to the fuel system. in oakland, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. as to the high-speed chase, we asked if they are re-evaluating the pursuit policn and neighbors say they are lucky no one was hurt but they can't comment because the case is still under investigation. it is scorching hot inland. a heat alert is in effect. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here. >> check out the highs so far. antioch hit 109 degrees so far. 59 at half moon bay. 50 degrees spread. this is what we see around this time of year. 40 to 50 degrees spread. triple-digits in concord and fairfield. 95 in santa rosa.

so what happens if your air-conditioner breaks down? >> how hot was it in antioch today? look at sant raw collier who spent today seeking any relief from a bedroom fan as the temperature inside of her house passed 90 degrees. >> i am sweating. i'm dying. >> reporter: blame an outdoor air-conditioner that gave up at the wrong time for all of the predictable reasons and at this heating and air-conditioning company they have seen this before. >> the heat causes homeowners to put more strain on their units and they try to get down to a lower comfort temperature and that puts more continuous run time on the unit. >> today the crews average more than one service call an hour. all hands on deck, they told us. >> you could have worked very hard today and never gotten cool in the east bay. not even at middle harbor shoreline park in oakland. though many tried. othered plays threw.

notifications about the weather where you live on your phone. and a former teacher in gilroy is back in jail after being charged with child molestation. they believe the man posed asnm teenager and lured boys into sending him photos. he had been free on $50,000 bail. he returned to jail after the bail was raised to $475,000. gilroy police say the case involved nine boys he taught between june of 2014 and january of this year. alameda county sheriffs raided this house in san leandro today. authorities say it was being used as an illegal casino. 14 people were detained in the raid, including several gamblers. investigators say the house was also used for drug trafficking. >> we recovered some drugs and we recovered nine gaming machines that we believe are part of the illegal gambling operation going on here. kind of a mini casino in a

residential garage. >> sheriffs used a drone to track down a person that ran from the house. that drone fed live video to officers and they were able to pin down the suspect. the house has been red tagged due to health reasons and police say it was piled high with garb1d]# today three men are in customer charged with targeting san francisco tourists in an armed robbery. they pulled the gun on three women near lumbar street. the officers quickly surrounded the suspects and took them into custody. the tourists were not hurt. an update on the breaking news, the fire with sky 7 hd above the scene and highway 17 in los gatos is open but southbound is still closed because of a fire burning on the hillside. we don't know how long southbound lanes will be closed. >> north of redwood estates, a

we have some new information on the oakland police sex scandal. the woman at the center of it all is telling it all. >> people don't know the story. people don't know the whole story. >> celeste is sharing her side of the story in her first sitdown interview with a television reporter and she's talking only to the abc 7 news i team dan noyes tonight at 6:00. and now a 400% rent hike and now eviction. we told you about neal hutchinson on friday. today his attorney said they are fighting it, and so is the city supervisor. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live in the newsroom with a follow up to a story going viral. >> here is the landlord's letter, the notice of the rent increase. after this letter cameñ$ unlawful detainer action. in short, it is a lawsuit to evict neal hutchinson. a lawsuit he's determined to fight. we told you friday about the

apartment building, it sits on the corner of columbus and scotland street. and apartment 25 where tenant neal hutchinson lives has a killer view. he also has a killer rent hike. >> i've been hit with a rent increase of 400%. i don't know where i'm going to go if i have to leave. >> reporter: his landlord raised his rent on june 1st from $1,800 a month to a whopping $8,000 a month. he is also demanding a security deposit of $16,000. hutchinson has appealed to the san francisco rent board. but suddenly the landlord served an eviction notice, a catch-22. hutchinson now has to get out by july 21st,ác@y weeks before thet board decides on the rent hike. supervisor aaron peskin said he is on the case. >> we are trying to work with the rent board to see if we could help get that decision out more quickly. >> reporter: the rent hike letter states that $8,000 is the current fair market rental

value. peskin, whose district includes north beach, calls it preposterous. >> there is nothing that rents for $8,000 a month in north beach. >> but hutchinson's lawyer today filed a response in superior court questioning the merits. >> a judge could rule on the complaint and allow a full hearing on what we believe are the errors. >> reporter: the landlord has yet to return our calls. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> state lawmakers from both parties found rare agreement today on spending $2 billion to help homeless californians. the money would come from an existing tax, proposition 63 that voters passed in 2004. plans include building 14,000 new homes. the no place like home program would provide treatment for homeless suffering from mental illness and it also calls for helping veterans.
