good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following on this friday on "world news now." a strong storm swamped las vegas turning city streets into rivers. and rushing flood waters all over the place. it's now moving east and south threatening the holiday weekend for millions of travelers. full coverage on this busy travel day ahead. >> scorching temperatures in california, the foothills east of sacramento. the flames have consumed more than 1500 acres. it's only about 12% contained. another wildfire east of boise was contained but not before destroying one home. the government is warning drivers of older model hondas and acuras to stop driving their cars because of danger from exploding takata

airbags. those are some of our stories on this friday, july 1st. from abc news, this is "world news now." there's something about going to vegas and getting sloshed and being thirsty, but this is a different sort of version of that. >> rough day there for sure. >> the storm that hovered other las vegas for a few hours but it still managed to create chaos across the city. >> anyone trying to drive through downtown would have been better off in a boat after nearly two inches of pouring rain and hail sparked massive flooding. at least two people that were out walking their dogs were swept away and had to be rescued. >> it's expected to take a heavy toll on millions of travelers who are heading out for the weekend. >> the fourth of july is prompting extra security at

airports and any other places where large crowds are gathering. >> reporter: heightened security in major airports across the country. in atlanta more officers and guns and a mayor who is going to push security beyond his front door of his airport. >> i can't discuss what we're doing to harden the perimeter, but i can tell you it's substantial and serious. >> that after istanbul, the second deadly overseas terror attack in months. >> reporter: there are no visible signs of security and few airports use security check points. los angeles, one of the airports doing so. all this as a record number of travelers are taking to the skies. more than 2.5 million will fly for the holiday. >> seeing more police. >> i was that much more aware and much more concerned. >> reporter: while there is plenty visible this weekend, there is a lot going on behind the scenes. >> there are going to be undercover police officers

dressed like travelers, looking for anything suspicious. also officers trained in behavioral analysis, looking for any suspicious behaviors, security extended to train stations and other transit hubs. but the majority of americans traveling for the 4th, 84%, will be driving. one estimate suggests a record 36 million will be behind the wheel. the tsa says it is also redeploying what it calls viper teams, visible protection teams that include behavior and explosive experts. they'll be out where passengers can see them. abc news, reagan national airport. now to the latest in the aftermath of the istanbul terror attack. this first video is hard to watch. it shows a plain-clothed officers confronting a man dressed in black, and the officer is shot. it's believed that man in black was one of these three men, the suicide bombers who carried out the attack. officials say they came from russia and two former soviet republics in central asia. the death toll has rescission tonight at least 44 people.

dozens of those injured remain hospitalized. the politician considered a firefighter replace prime minister david cameron has dropped out of his bid to lead the campaign. boris johnson was the leading campaigner for for brexit urging the vote in favor of leaving. he says he won't for prime minister. his decision came after a key ally announced he would run himself. at home, democrats playing defense and republicans are crying foul after former president bill clinton sat down for 30 minutes with to loretta lynch. this coming even though the justice department is investigating hillary clinton's private e-mail server. that investigation is ongoing. we get the latest from megan hughes. >> reporter: former president bill clinton and loretta lynch both in phoenix earlier this week. it led to a private meeting on board her plane. >> our conversation was a great deal about his grandchildren.

it was primarily social. >> reporter: she says there was no discussion of hillary clinton's state department e-mails or benghazi. regardless, a democratic senator says it sent the wrong signal. >> she should have said i recognize you have a long record of leadership on fighting crime, but this is not the time for that conversation. >> reporter: other democrats refused to condemn the meeting. >> the president's expectations this is an investigation guided by the facts, not by politics. >> her ethics is above reproach. >> reporter: donald trump says he was disappointed. >> it's something you don't do from an ethical standpoint. who would think that when you have this massive investigation going on on e-mails which is so serious they'd have a meeting like this? i was very surprised. >> reporter: meanwhile trump has a slew of problems. in the ad wars hillary clinton outspending trump 12-1 in june. and clinton will have a new weapon on the campaign trail.

next week for the first time, president obama stumps with her. abc political analysts say trump needs more gop support. >> he has to figure out away to get more people involved in this against hillary clinton. >> reporter: a strong running mate could be a boost to trump. abc news has learned that new jersey governor chris christie is being formally vetted for that role. diane, kendis? >> thank you. and vice president joe biden is about to campaign with hillary clinton for the first time. they'll attend an event next friday in pennsylvania. meanwhile in a radio interview biden said bernie sanders told him that he is going to endorse hillary clinton. when asked about biden's comments, sanders said he's working with the clinton camp on coming together and hopes to reach an agreement at some point. new developments in the debt crisis facing puerto rico. president obama signed a rescue package with hours to go before major loan repayment was due. the bill allows the territory to restructure debt and negotiate with creditors.

officials said they would still default on nearly $1 billion of debt payments today. an investigation underway in south carolina after the death of a muslim recruit. 15 drill instructors at paris island reassigned. the marine corps is trying to determine if the recruit was hazed because of his muslim religion. >> a group of u.s. navy sailors was ruled derelict in january. a pentagon investigation pulled no punches about the incident as well as how those americans dealt with it. >> reporter: these dramatic images outraged the american public, iranian revolutionary guards forcing navy sailors to their knees. we learned much of the blame is with the navy. >> the investigation found a lack of leadership, a disregard

for risk management. >> reporter: a blistering report citing poor training and basic navigational failures saying had any crew member zoomed into their gps, they would have seen they were closing in on an iranian island. the sailors giving up computer pass words and secrets about the boat. nine sailors will be punished including the lieutenant in charge who agreed to tape this apology. >> it was a mistake. that was our fault. >> reporter: and the helmsmen who refused orders to speed past the iranian boats. one sailor credited for quick thinking, the sole female crew member, hid in the emergency beacon risking her life and secretly taping the encounter on her phone. the navy report didn't let iran off the hook, saying the iranians violated international laws for even detaining the crew, let alone videotaping them.

abc news. wildlife officials in montana are searching for the grizzly involved in a fatal attack near glacier national park. brad treat was knocked off his bike after he and another rider apparently surprised the bear. officials say the grizzly left the area immediately after and as time goes on they say it's less likely they can track the animal. troubled free agent johnny manziel isn't signing with any nfl team. if he does, he'll be suspended for the first four games. it's for violating the substance abuse policy. if he got a deal, he would also face additional penalties for violating the domestic violence policy. he's accused of assaulting his former girlfriend. at the college baseball world series, midnight never arrived for cinderella. >> he got him. it's all over. >> that was how the coastal california university closed out the arizona wildcats to win their first-ever baseball

aftermath of the istanbul airport terror attack. this first video is hard to watch. it shows a plain clothed officer confronting a man in black and the officer gets shot. it's believed the man in the black was one of the three suicide bombers who carried out the attack. officials say they came from russia and two former soviet republics in central asia. the death toll has risen to at least 44 people. dozens of those injured remain hospitalized. an american teenager was stabbed to death as she slept in her bed in the west bank. the attacker, a 17-year-old palestinian, was shot dead by security forces. photographs show blood on the walls and the floor of the girl's room. hundreds attended her funeral later in the day. a cruise ship is returning to new jersey after an apparent drowning. an unconscious 8-year-old boy was taken on board "the anthem of the seas" to a new york city
