it is saturday, july 2nd. good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm chris nguyen. >> good morning to you. we have a fair amount of clouds, low clouds in than fog. the northern half of the bay, still clear around san jose and mountain view. as we widen the perspective, you'll notice this keeping the on shore flow going. the marine layer will enter across the bay. 54 in oakland. 58 in san carlos. the plan looks like this, by 10:00 this morning, we still have fog across the bay but notice it is sunny in the east bay even by berkeley and

throughout the afternoon, the fog and low clouds bank up along the shoreline and we'll be looking at the foggy, cool beaches not only today but throughout the holiday weekend. 80s inland. upper 60s to near 80 along the bay. upper 50s and 60s coast in san francisco. we begin with breaking news out of the east bay. a water main break in pleasant hill has damaged businesses and will force the closure of contra costa build this morning. temperature 12 inch pipe burst overnight on the boulevard near woodsworth lane. you can see how much water was released. it has since been turned off. crews will start repairing the roadway at 8:00 this morning. contra costa boulevard will be shut down between gregory lane and woodsworth for an undetermined time. more breaking news this morning, this time in michigan, a man suspected of driving drunk smashed into a natural gas line in an energy training facility forcing the evacuation of several neighborhoods.

crews quickly turned the gas off. the driver was hospitalized and thankfully nobody was hurt. police roped off an 18 square mile block area around the crash site. forces stormed a cafe following a ten hour stand off that ended in a blood bath. 20 hostages and six militants were killed as well as two police men. 13 hostages were freed. 40 were wounded and isis has taken credit for the assault. here is abc's news anchor. >> this all began when gunman attacked the holey artisan bakery when the cafe had turned into a restaurant for the evening hours, one waiter barely escaped. >> i was working in the pizza kitchen. two men began their attack. people ducked for cover or started to run. i managed to make it onto the roof of the building. they were throwing bombs and the windows were shaking. >> reporter: the popular

restaurant in the capital of the dill mattic area was packed after another day long fast during the islamic holy month of ramadan. the chanters chanting god is great took hostages, most of them foreigners and exchanged gu gunfire with explosions. >> it was a really large boom. >> reporter: the cafe is one mile from the u.s. embassy which warns u.s. residents to shelter in place. >> we're accounting for all private american citizens who may have been in the area. we don't have finality on that. >> reporter: all americans working for the united states mission in dhaka are safe. authorities say one of the gun men was captured alive. one survivor said the gunman sparped everyone who could -- spared everyone who could recite from the koran. download our app for free and

pay. fines in san jose now range from 500 to $1,000. fines have also increased in santa cruz where all fireworks are outlawed. >> this is an all hands on deck weekend. we'll have every available officer paroling the streets, downtown beaches and parks. >> we want to have people come ouft the holiday weekend safe with smiles on their faces and pleasant memories. >> reporter: increased enforcement lasts through july 5th. in san jose, katie marzulo, abc 7 news. dublin police showed off the 400 pounds of fireworks confiscated in a sting operation. they arrested two people accused of stealing illegal fireworks. dublin has a zero tolerance policy for illegal fireworks but is one of the few bay area cities allowing safe and sane fireworks to be sold. 5:05 is our time. a new wildfire has erupted in central california and quickly grown to 1,900 acres.

cal fire says it is building along i-98. 12 buildings are threatened. some people have been ordered out of their homes the fire is spreading fast because of the wind. a section of highway 198 is closed between coleinga. the fire is at zero containment. a large wildfire burning along the american river is threatening 2,600 structures in el dorado. the fire has led to mandatory evacuations and is only 12% contained. in san francisco, a woman is in the hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a charter bus. the crash happened justice before 6:00 last night at broadway and sansome street. we're told the passengers on the skyline coach bus were let off after the crash. no one else was hurt. police have determined -- have not determined who is at fault.

san francisco police are investigating a crash involving a limo and a pedestrian. it happened at around 9:30 last night on 19th avenue and winston drive next to the stonetown galleria. the 30-year-old victim was taken to the hospital but there is no word yet on the extent of the victim's injuries. california's tough gun laws are tougher. yesterday, governor brown signed six new bills into law, including one that bans rifles with removeable magazines. california will require background checks to buy ammunition, ban the loan of a weapon to anyone without a background check and make it a crime to file a false report that a gun was stolen. lawmakers were motivated by the mass shootings in san bernardino and orlando, florida, gun rights advocates say these laws are not the answer. >> at any time there are more terrorist attacks, they'll try to cut down on the gun laws and take our rights away and

criminals are exempt from the law. >> i think the american people are ready for a change. how many people have to die before we say enough is enough? >> the new laws are expected to be challenged in court. 5:08 is our time and you may face delays if you're headed between the east bay and marin county this weekend. we're looking at the richmond san raphael bridge toll plaza. one lane is closed for emergency pothole repairs. cal-tran will close one lane tonight and tomorrow night. visiting the golden gate bridge won't be easy this holiday weekend. we were at the visitor parking will the as workers closed off car acset. they will be closed this weekend from 11 in the morning until 5:00 p.m. on the monday, july 4th, the north visitors lot will be closed for the entire day. if you're headed south this weekend to santa cruz, be aware, there are major street closures,

it will be closed at wood road and the on ramp to highway 17. this is the second year in a row for the closures. the city wants to keep beach goers from cutting through downtown and clogging streets. tate and mosul avenue will be closed at highway 9. the off ramp from northbound 17 is open. whale watchers are flocking to the san mateo coastline to see a show. a humpback whale has been breaching the water. we went there to share the excitement. >> reporter: this is a spectacular show people have been watching at the pacifica state beach. >> we saw so many whales. you can see the spouts coming up and every once in awhile, they would pop their heads up and breach a little bit. >> alley fitzgerald among the dozens of surfers getting an up close and personal look at the whales. >> half of the time. she is like alley, it is right there.

her 2-year-old son who will not be attending a preschool or eventually kindergarten. >> fortunately for us, we have the option for me to be able to home school him. a lot of the other families in california do not have that luxury. >> a few other parents have decided to move to other states rather than be forced to have their children vaccined as a requirement to enroll in school. the bill was prompted by a measles outbreak that started if disneyland one year. 113 people got sick. the governor signed it it into law last year, only those with a medical condition can request an exemption from a doctor. because of the hipaa privacy law, the doctor doesn't have to disclose the ailment. will some parents try to circumvent the law? yes. amy bakarak is one of the founders of vaccinate california. >> i think parents will try to find a way, but you know it is important to know that the vast

coast, parts of the bay, typical pattern for the fourth of july, limited fog, but that is going to stay at the coast allowing for the not so great fireworks but they're prepared for that along the shoreline. beach hazard, temperatures anywhere from the low 50s to just about 50 degrees with strong rip currents along the shorelines. if you're headed to the coach, you'll run into the breezy winds and clouds and the dangerous conditions. statewide, though, very nice in the sierra nevada. 76 in los angeles, the heat stays in the central valley and along the coast it is 65 in p monterey, 89 in sacramento. so this is santa cruz if you're headed down south for the holiday weekend. some comfortable beach temperatures in the upper 60s. plenty of afternoon sununshine. very little change temperature wise. you have to go way south to get the temperatures back home. in the 50s near the shoreline. today, numbers will be in the 60s and 70s with 80s, maybe a 90 or so out towards the inland

valleys. a slight drop tomorrow and by the fourth, not a whole lot of change. 60s and 50s shoreline. 82 in concord. we'll look for the even numbers to be comfortable. clear conditions here, sunny skies leading to a clear night and then the fog here allowing for the fireworks obviously to be shooting up and over the low cloud deck. we're looking at numbers around the bay, around the peninsula, comfortable. this is alameda, our east bay with numbers in the 60s for the fair and up in san raphael, 70 degrees, breezy conditions, the rest of the bay, low clouds and fog at the coast. 82 in san jose. comfortable there. 72 in vallejo. the accuweather seven day forecast, we're looking at sunny afternoons with 90 inland. slight dip tomorrow, very little change for the fourth and look at the temperatures get even cooler as we go through the rest of the work week. a little bit below average.

the july 4th holiday weekend is under way. that means the summer vacation travel season is in full swing. how do you know if you're getting a good deal on your vacation. here is michael finney with some answers. >> reporter: booking travel is never cheap. sometimes it feels worse than it is. >> is travel cheaper or more expensive this year? >> it seems to be more expensive actually. i keep wondering why we're not getting the gas prices, you know, translating to the jet fuel. >> reporter: kathleen braden is like most travellers. she thinks the cost is going up.

a study shows they're a mixed bag. >> plane and flight prices have gone down 6 1/2% over last year on average. hotels have actually increased a little bit. >> reporter: mickey merico is the vice president of marketing and analytics at a ddobe. it gives you a unique view of travel pricing. >> trillions and trillions of transactions flow through the tools every year and that gives us the ability to look at aggregated data. >> the best time to buy tickets is 90 days before the flight. >> 90 days is consistently the best and lowest prices. then is plateaus. let me tell you, the worst time to start buying tickets is 20 days or less. what we see on average is that prices start to go up 3% a day.

might hear on earth. take a listen. that is the sound in space. 1.7 billion miles away. if everything goes as planned. juno will orbit the planet gooding data and when the mission is over it will point itself at the planet and dive into a fiery death in jupiter's upper atmosphere. every winter, great white sharks meet at a spot halfway between mexico and hchlt icawai. the male sharks dive deep again and again, sometimes up to 150 times a day. but researchers aren't sure why. they think the sharks are either feeding or mating. some shark experts at the monterey bay aquarium are developing a new one of a kind camera that can be mounted on a shark. they hope temporary will track the mysterious behavior. it is being tested but the

some what typical for the fourth as we head to the pacific northwest. this area of low pressure is allowing for the cooling trend. it brought the marine layer back across the bay, brought the temperatures way, way down and will continue to do so subtly the last couple of days. a live look outside and you'll notice the low cloud deck has stopped there. we do have anywhere from 4 to 5 mile visibility from the coast to the north bay. we're clear, mountain view and san jose. 56 in the south bay. 52 morgan hill and on the coast and in the north bay, it is in the 50s in the east bay. take a look here, isn't this nice, from the east bay hills camera you can see the fog filling into the valley here and it will take just a little bit of time to clear the entire bay area, but we'll look for afternoon sun in the north bay. 51 santa rosa. 55 napa and novato. southwest wind up to 24 miles an hour. so that will allow for a very

nice day today by fair field, antioch, brentwood. cooler conditions continuing it to reach concord and liver more. you topped out at the airplanes yesterday in the low 90s, today, still even cooler there so outside here, our studios, you can see the deck of low clouds and fog and it will remain pretty cool here with just limited son. more towards the financial district and along the coast. the golden gate bridge looking very cool. foggy along the coast and bay. parts itself anyway, typical pattern for the fourth of july with some sunshine in the afternoon. in fact, a lot of sunshine in the afternoon but also the chance of rip currents and the very cold ocean temperature so 6 to 7 foot waves, beach hazard statement through the fourth and looking at very cool temperatures. the air temperature will be cool as well. statewide, though, pretty nice with 99 in chico. 89 sacramento. when it is in the upper 80s here, you know it is pretty

pleasant back home. coast side, 65. 76 in los angeles and if you're headed to our local beaches, it is going to be kind of cool with 57 bodega bay. 579 half moon bay. 68 in santa cruz. ocean temperature here is to the 50s but to the north, just about 50 degrees. fast forward to the fourth of july fireworks, cloudy skies at the shoreline. temperatures around 60 degrees. as you head inland. nice and clear, hayward looks nice at 64 as well as mountain view. today in the south bay. some of the most pleasant weather will be here with low 80s for san jose. 79 in santa clara and occupy te -- cupertino. here are the clouds, 59 the sunset. 63 downtown. in the north bay, you have to go way north to get into the warmth. 82 in sarah toga.
