i'm in tears as i write this. >> reporter: dana wrote this facebook post moments after finding out her friend was gone >> rest in peace. >> reporter: the two lived in priestly hall together where they saw each other every day. they stayed in touch after moving out in may. tarishi sent this photo last month before she left for bangladesh. >> it's completely unreal. just to try to process what she live been going new, the terror, the fright, i can't believe, she didn't deserve any of it obviously. she was such a good person. nice, funny. >> reporter: the 19-year-old was serious about her future, though she wanted to make a difference. that's why she volunteered with ethical apparel. >> her passion for life was helping people in ways that maybe are out of the norm. >> reporter: she planned to

major this economics and wanted to use business to help others. >> she had her life going for her. and it's all gone now. >> reporter: while friends on campus struggle to come to terms with what has happened, members of the bay area bangladesh are angry. >> we definitely don't like and we don't want this anymore. >> reporter: jain and 19 others died. a memorial vigil to honor tarishi jain and the others killed will be held tuesday noon at uc berkeley. 20 of those who died were eating when the militants stormed the upscale restaurant. witnesses say the hostages who could not recite verses from the koran were tortured and killed. 13 were rescued, though two officers died freeing them. isis claimed responsibility for the attack, but as we told you earlier, bangladeshi officials are disputing that. one of the two students from emory university who died, her

family lived in miami. >> just so hard to believe that she was there and she was suffering for 10 or 11 hours. i don't even want to think about it. >> one of the attackers has been arrested, the others killed. and we're updating the late information on the situation on our abc 7 news app. you can download it for free and enable push alerts to get instant updates on your phone or mobile device. san francisco police are looking for an attacker who stabbed one and then boarded a muni bus. it happened around 10:00 last knight. the 57-year-old victim was taken to the hospital. police are interviews witnesses

to help find that attacker. oakland police are investigating a shooting at an east oakland duplex that left two people dead. the shooter is still on the loose. police responded to the home on mcarthur boulevard just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon. they found two people with bullet wounds. both died. officers have not released a motive for that double home homicide. police are investigating the discovery of a body in a residential neighborhood yesterday. investigators canvassed an area around bell avenue in greenway. police have not released details of the circumstances surrounding that death. a water main break has damaged businesses in pleasant hill. the repairs should be done later today.

>> reporter: crews have already filled in most of the washout holes the broken water main has been replaced and now they're working on repairing the pavement. >> it was all the way down the street. >> reporter: theresa says her printing shop was not damaged, but she is still without water. >> the business not able to open because the parking lot is flooded. >> reporter: one picture framing shop got serious flooding. >> there is a lot of wood and paper product and everything was very much sitting on water. >> this was a line that ruptured. it was about 12 years old. >> a significant amount of water coming up, so there will have to be repaving done and then as you can see, there is a lot of debris, a lot of rock and mud that came up. >> reporter: crews began power washing the mud that cased the parking lot. the repairs should be finished sunday.

businesses will reopen then, as well. in san bernardino, firefighters have controlled a small but fast moving brush fire that damaged five homes. three destroyed, the other two heavily damaged. two firefighters suffered minor injuries related to smoke inhalation. the flames charred nearly nine acres. firefighters have been dealing with triple digit heat while battling nearly 3,000 acre wildfire. cellphone video shows just how big the smoke and flames got. the curry fire broke out friday. cal fire says they're managing hot spots. >> it's 103 today, dry and firefighters just need to take the rest breaks they need and stay hydrated.

>> the fire is 25% contained. a wildfire in current county is threatening 300 structures. the deer fire is burning about 50 miles southeast of bakersfield. it was sparked on friday, voluntary evacuation orders have been issued. more than 500 crews are on the line. it is 0% contained. firefighters also continue to battle a wildfire burning near the american river in eldorado. the trail head fire has scorched more than 3300 acres and forced mandatory evacuations near georgetown and forest hill. air quality officials are asking people to a precautions because of the smoke. >> i think it's really important for the public to realize if they see and smell smoke and it's bothering them, it's a good idea to then stay inside.

elie wiesel has died. the nobel committee once called him a messenger to mankind. now a look back on his life. >> reporter: he was born in romania in 1928. when elie wiesel was just 15, he and his family were sent to auschwitz. his father, mother, sister perished. his life long mission, to make sure that the holocaust would always be remembered.

his memoir "night" sold millions of copies and is considered one of the most important pieces of holocaust literature. he was a champion of all victims of genocide. he died at his home here in new york, he was 87 years old. >> that was cecilia baker reporting. his family says he passed away peacefully after a long illness. happening now, caltrans is taking advantage of the light holiday weekend traffic to make major repairs on the san rafael bridge. this is a live look from the bridge toll plaza. the work is happening just beyond the area that you see in this picture. caltrans has closed the lane on the upper deck to repair a pothole located in the westbound direction.

the pothole measures about 3 feet wide and extends deep if to the bridge deck. closure runs until 9:00 this morning. three east bay b.a.r.t. stations are closed this holiday weekend as b.a.r.t. gets ready to connect its track to a new maintenance complex under construction in hayward. the south hayward union city and freemont stations won't reopen until tuesday. bus service is being provided between the stations, but there are likely to be delays. san francisco voters might be considering a tax this november, but not on your favorite apps and gadgets, but the companies that make them. as jonathan bloom explains, the city is facing a crisis and wants money to fix it. >> we can look around and see with our own eyes what is happening here in the city.

>> reporter: only companies earning more than a million a year would be taxed. it would need a two thirds vote to pass in the general election. >> if we think the numbers of people on the street are bad now, our prediction is that there will be a massive explosion unless there is a serious commitment by the city to address this crisis. >> reporter: the supervisor says he hasn't talked to the mayor about the proposed tax but he doesn't have to. if the tax gets six votes, it goes straight to the november ballot. board could vote as soon as august 2. jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. if you can't make to san francisco tomorrow night for the july 4th fireworks, you can watch the show on your smartphone. a new app will allow users on hillsides and vantage points not near the show to experience the music. the app is pyro spectaculars and it's free on the app store and google play. 200,000 people are expected to catch the fireworks show. it begins at 9:30 tomorrow night.

fog will be in the days ahead. i'll explain. hillary clinton sat down with the fbi for 3 1/2 hours the outcome could shape the race for the white house. clinton voluntarily answered questions about her e-mails and private server she kept as secretary of state and it did not take long for donald trump to pounce. mary bruce has more from washington. >> reporter: at 7:40 a.m. on this holiday saturday, signs of movement at hillary clinton's d.c. home. clinton possibly slipping out to fbi headquarters and an interview that could shape the race. for roughly 3 1/2 hour, clinton is questioned about her use of a private e-mail server while she was secretary of state. shortly afterwards with the press anxiously awaiting, suvs are spotted returning to clinton's home. in a statement her campaign says clinton gave a voluntary interview and is pleased to have the opportunity to assist the department of justice in bringing this review to a conclusion. the long awaited interview one

the fbi not to recommend criminal charges against hillary clinton. what she did was wrong. mary bruce, abc news, washington. former pennsylvania senator and donald trump supporter rick santorum will weigh in on the presidential race. santorum will discuss if winning the rust belt is trump's most likely path to victory this fall. you can watch the full interview on this week with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 this morning right here on abc 7. some preachers in spokane are taking that city and pride parade organizers to court after they were attacked on the street last month. video shows a 17-year-old girl punching the two street preachers. she was arrested and charged with assault. the preachers claim their first amendment right of free speech was violated. the chair of the lgbt group outspokane disagreed and says

he's disappointed. part of a national park is closed after a grizzly bear bit and scratched a visitor. it happened friday night at the denali national park. a 28-year-old woman was hiking with two other people and scared the bear off and then played dead when it charged at them. but the bear scratched and bite her. the animal has had other encounters with park visitors in the past two weeks. officials say because of its erratic behavior, the bear will be located and killed as soon as possible. a scary sight in one neighborhood. fish and wildlife officials worked with police to capture a 70-pound mountain lion. it was first seen dangling from a tree. there were several attempts to tranquilize the big cat, but it kept moving and made its way into someone's backyard. finally the animal was cornered and subdued. during our efforts to

capture it, there were people on the streets. luckily it didn't take a bad turn. >> they couldn't have done a better job. >> the cat has been tagged, collared and released in to a remote area. smoking may soon be illegal on california state beaches. california lawmakers will take up a ban on smoking at beaches and parks once they return from summer recess in august. proponents say it's crucial to keep cigarette butts from lettering recreation areas, but some lawmakers believe enforcement will be difficult. >> enforcement is tough, we have so many miles of freeway and do we enforce everybody that goes 60 miles an hour in a 55 mile per hour zone? it's not a reason not to have a good that you. i think there will be a lot of self enforcement. >> if approved and signed by governor brown, the law could go into effect in 2017.

you can start reserving your spot tonight to watch danville's fourth of july parade. about 50,000 people will line the 1.2 mile route. this year's theme honors vietnam war veterans. organizers will allow residents to put chairs, tape and other items on the street after 6:00 tonight to reserve a space. the parade starts at 9:00 tomorrow morning on harts avenue and san ramon valley boulevard. there are higher fines for illegal fireworks and open alcohol containers. you could end up paying as much as $1300 in fines and fees. police say it's an all hands on deck weekend meaning every single officer available will be patrolling the streets to make sure people are being safe. the penalties are in effect today through tuesday morning.

the oakland police and fire departments are working together to plan for a safe fourth of july. they want people to celebrate, but not by shooting guns or setting off illegal fireworks. the city is infamous for illegal fireworks displays like these. tomorrow night police will have extra patrols in areas with the highest gunfire. they will arrest anyone caught firing a gun. they also have collection barrels at six oakland fire stations for illegal fireworks. still ahead on the abc 7 sunday morning news, nothing could be more reassuring to children than their mother's voice. why researchers say mom's voice may be a key to social development. and here is a live look from the exploratorium camera at pier 15. you see fog there. clouds and cool weather.

but what is really going on inside their brains to make them feel that way? >> how much of the brain becomes active for hearing your mother's voice. >> reporter: daniel abrams set out to use functional mri scans to see how children in the 7 to 12-year-old range process the sound of their mother's voice. they say early research had already documented a connection even with unborn babies in the womb. >> and fetal heart rate goes up. >> reporter: as in this demonstration, the team had mother and other women with similar voices read short made up words in to a digital recorder. the kids were then placed into the mre. >> and we say you're about to hear some voices that may be familiar to you. >> reporter: he says the voices were randomized. when they compared the pathway, they were stunned. not just voice related pathways lit up, but also different

centers in the brain that processed emotion, facial recognition and even reward behaviors. >> a wide broadcast of the mom's voice to all of these emotion and reward areas in the brain. >> reporter: they say it's too early to draw firm conclusions from findings, but they believe that having such varied parts of the brain keyed in on the mother's voice could be an indication of the influence on the child's social development. what they also don't know is whether other important voices in the child's life are processed the same way. >> parents are asking about father's choice and i've gotten a bunch of e-mails saying being well,what about dad. >> reporter: answers could be coming. the team says the study will now provide a baseline for future research and as any good mother meet tell you, if you want to learn, you have to keep listening. and in terms of that future research, the stanford team says

city with 57 in oakland. mountain view, 58. it's been nice on the peninsula and this is east bay hills camera with the fog here. so looks gorgeous this morning. should be pleasant for our friends in the east bay valley. 56 by the delta. liver more 56. napa at 51. you see the gray skies. we will have fog and fire works for the fourth extending locally inland. so cool water temperatures and wave heights up to seven feet on some of the south facing beaches. risk of strong rip currents and very, very cold water temperatures could lead to hypothermia, so keep that in mind if you're spending time here. you have the sweat hushirt with temperatures in the upper 50s. 69 again for santa cruz. limited sunshine. so from the eldorado county fire there, we're looking at the

trailhead fire, allowing for hazy conditions in the sierra nevada over 3,000 acres, only 12% contained. and hotter temperatures in the central valley thankfully, but still a tough time getting a ham on that. in pleasant ton, are 86 at 3:00, very nice day with 75, 7:00. cool mid-60s by 11:00 tonight. so hopefully they won't kept swept this afternoon. as 1:00, weather will be nice with a very light breeze. temperatures around the bay today from 59 this half moon bay once again low 80s in san jose. palo alto. 69 in oakland. so should be nice on the east bay shore line. cloudy skies tomorrow night through oakland and hayward, of course san francisco, san mateo and temperatures will be comfortable in the 60s, but the cloud deck as low as 400 feet
