fourth of july. thank you for joining us today. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm eric thomas. larry beil has the day off and we're just a few hours away from the fireworks across the bay area. in san francisco, thousands of people will squeeze into the city hoping for a clear view of tonight's big show and the preparation are already underway with crews getting the affects ready. >> spencer christian will look at your fireworks forecast. but we begin with lyanne melendez who is live in san francisco. >> reporter: hi, there. i've been here for more than 20 years and i don't recall too many clear nights on the fourth of july. so we're hoping that karl the tag will behave but if not,

relax and enjoy the music and we'll show you how using a special app. san francisco is ranked among the top ten cities in the country to spend the fourth of july. >> we come from rome, italy and we are here for fourth of july in san francisco. that is our first time in the united states. >> reporter: pier 39 was packed with local this is afternoon but mostly tourists, trying their best to assimilate. >> we're about to go out to the bicycle match at the at&t and so we thought we better have a t-shirt and look the part. >> reporter: there is perhaps no better place to be than at a baseball game on america's birthday. this evening thousands of people will gather along the water front to experience live entertainment while hoping to see a spectacular fireworks display without much fog. this afternoon crews were loading dozens of tubes on two barges, all set off by a computer-based operating system. because of our unpredictable weather there will be fewer

shells that could go up to 1,000 feet in the air. >> we don't want to lose theme into the fog -- lose them into the fog and we try to limit that and intensefy the lower level. >> this year you could download an app allowing you to listen to a soundtrack on your hand-held device. >> if you are not able to come down to the water front and hear the sound system, you could still get the full effect of the audio and the fireworks. >> reporter: the show will go on for 23 exhilarating minutes. yet, as we've all come to know, nothing is guaranteed. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. public transportation into the city is a good idea and b.a.r.t. will run longer to get people and from the fourth of july of celebration. the agency is running on a sunday schedule but will operate special event trains in the evening. the biggest question remains will the heavy fog block out the fireworks show. >> spencer christian, what do you have to tell us? >> reporter: it is not going to be a fog-free evening here in

san francisco, i could tell you that. however, we may see a colorful and bright fog conditions around the bay tonight as the fireworks go off. a live look at doppler 7 hd and we have fog at the coast and beyond already. and before i get to the fog for fireworks, i want to advise you that we have a beach hazard advisory in effect through tonight and strong rip currents are a possibility and the wave heights are elevated and the water is cold and it could be a quick hypo thethermia and there the fog over the bay. it is not thick yet but it will continue to build into the early evening hours. it is 62 here in san francisco. 69 in oakland. mid to upper 70s in mountain view, san jose and morgan hill and half moon bay 69 degrees. cloudy at the beach and the water must be cold because there are few people in the water. mostly on the beach. it is 71 in santa rosa. napa 68. 78 at novato. 79 at fairfield, 80 in concord

and livermore and here is our forecast. notice as we approach 9:00 this evening we see the fog getting deeper and thicker along the coastline moving in patches across the bay. so for fireworks viewing between 9:30 and 10:00, cool conditions around the city with temperatures in the upper 50s. low 60s inland. mainly clear except a few patches of light fog around oakland but here in san francisco it will be foggy-works. >> thank you, spencer. there are plenty of fireworks shows to see all over the bay area. you could see the july fourth fireworks spectacular at the alameda county fair grounds and that starts at 9:30. fireworks shoot off from the railroad parking structure on livermore around 9:30 and the south bay catch a show at the milpitas sports center complex and the fireworks are at 9:15. in the north bay, the final night of fireworks at the marin county fair tonight at 9:30.

find more information about tonight's events on abc7news.com. a warning from police in the south bay this july fourth, officers from multiple agencies will be out looking for people lighting off their own fireworks. fines range from $500 to a thousand dollars. abc 7 news crews captured plenty of illegal fireworks over the weekend. remember, even those labelled safe are banned in san jose and most of santa clara county. >> i personally have seen a 3-year-old child who took a bottle rocket to the chest and it penetrated all the way to her heart. every year, even the safe and sane fireworks, which really aren't safe, create injuries. >> for the first time in san jose, you could report illegal fireworks activity online through the city's website. in more ado, the country club has closed the golf course where the fireworks display is launched because residents have been launched from the grounds.

the city may consider canceling future displays. fireworks might be to blame for this wildfire in pittsburg. firefighters stopped the flames before they got to homes in pittsburg. the fire broke out between 11:00 and burned three and four acres next two two housing developments. the flames damaged three fences. fire crews are trying to figure out what started a grass fire in contra costa in alhambra. two fires merged into one before they were able to put it out. oakland fire crews are happening battle a wildfire near the american river in el dorado and placer counties and they posted this video on twitter. the trail head fire has scorched more than 5,000 acres and forced evacuations near georgetowntown and foresthill. 2600 structures are threatened and this fire is 25% contained.

you could see vallejo firefighters working to free a driver whose suv overturned. that collision happened at 12th street and solano around 8:30 this morning. paramedics took three people to the hospital to be treated. rescue crews had to remove the windshield to get one of the victims out of the suv. there is already a fireworks show that went off early in the world of sports this fourth of july. >> nba superstar kevin durant announced he is leaving the thunder to become a warrior. and reaction -- it was fierce with some oklahoma fans burning his jersey. >> and here in the bay area fans are thrilled. carolyn tyler has local reaction. >> i'm scex static right now. >> jerome diaz has a garage that is a shrine to the warriors. he'll have to add new

memorabilia now that kevin durant is joining the team. >> does this take some of the sting out of losing the championship. >> there was a lot that was disappointing but i was thinking kevin durant, we could make it all up with durant. >> reporter: he announced his decision this morning saying he wants to grow as a player and evolve as a man. and writing, it pains me to know that i will disappoint so many people with this choice but i believe i'm doing what i feel is the right thing at this point in my life and my playing career. respected sports journalist mark spheres of the espn undefeated believes the warriors sold durant on their strength in numbers mentality. >> i think this team is going to be sun selfish and -- unselfish and scary offensively and maybe go down as one of the top teams we'll ever see. >> diaz now expects an even bigger crowd to gather here in his tricked out dub nation gauge

kevin related the fact that he went to nine nba title games and won only one ring and durant has a chant to get several -- a chance to get several with the doves. i thought he felt it was time for a new chapter in his life and career. >> and shu, what does it mean for the chemistry once he comes into the mix. >> throw out your strength and number t-shirts as the entire warriors bench will be decimated to facilitate the deal. it is rare to have four all-stars and two mvps on one roster. and keep them all happy. the reason the warriors were if back to back finals was their bench. now the new splash family with claye and durant have l have to play more minutes with a lackluster bench. numbers could do down but they'll deal with that for another ring and if anyone could make this roster work it is head coach. durant seems like his ego is in check but players like him are

i don't know if he likes that. yeah part of the complete breakfast well, across the nation today, people celebrated independence day. >> from philadelphia to washington, d.c., to here in california, communities held parades, some small and some large. and in alameda, one of the biggest anywhere. >> here is abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman. >> reporter: if you ever question the concept of this nation as a melting pot for people and ideas, look no further than alameda this morning. >> it has a home-town feel. >> reporter: 364 days a year park street in alameda has the look of main street usa. and then july fourth comes along and this happens.

oh, does it happen. >> this is one of the largest home-town parades in america. you are talking 170 floats, 2500 arts and 20,000 people watching. this parade just goes on and on and on. for hours. how do you qualify for this parade. >> i don't think there is any qualification. there may be disqualifications but no actual requirements outside of signing up and showing up. >> they showed up all right. if we had done a roll call, it would account for most of alameda marching in the parade or watching it. damien wilson chose the latter. >> it is about our diversity and our kindness and our neighborship. >> they passed on horses and floats. in old cars, on foot. a tapestry of community with a bit of controversy, too. >> everybody has their opinion. >> reporter: among them, donnie, who convinced a group of friends

to march in support of gun control. they planned this as a counter point to another float that supported the national rifle association but this year they did not show. >> we see them every year and we boo them every year and this year we decided to have more presence and do something about it. >> and there was quite the opposite for donnie. >> i didn't expect this kind of response but i'm joyed. >> reporter: freedom to march and agree and express on what is on america's happiest day of the year. >> it is america's birthday. you have to love it. >> reporter: in alameda, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> thousands of people enjoyed a peninsula tradition. this made two laps through downtown redwood city and the front and back of today's fourth of july parade. the fourth of july parade dates back to 1939. ♪

and an enthusiastic parade in danville. some people set out chairs at 6:00 p.m. yesterday to snag the prime viewing spots. this parade goes back to 1958. ♪ well the king of rock and roll helped greet big crowds at the rose, white and blue parade in san jose this morning. this year's theme was bicycle on the alameda. organizers encouraged people to take bikes out to explore the historic neighborhood. fireworks may be illegal in very neighborhoods but they are popular in san bruno. we were at the shopping center as residents lined up to buy safe and sane fireworks. most were spending way over $100 to entertain their families later tonight. >> this is just a good time to get the family together and something for the kids to do and they have a good time lighting everything up. >> just the three of us hanging

out in front of my house. >> once a year, it is a treat. >> san bruno is one of the few cities to allow fireworks it is a fundraiser for the organizations that sell them and some raise about $15,000 for their groups. it is still illegal in san bruno to light fireworks in parks or on school grounds. and you could share your photos from july fourth with abc 7 news. just add the #abc now to your pictures and videos when you post them online. we'll feature july fourth photos on the air and online throughout the holiday. well on this fourth of july, 43 million travelers taking to the roads and to the skies. >> here is abc 7 news reporter stephanie ramos with a look at the holiday rush and what is being done to keep people safe. >> on this fourth of july, of the 43 million americans traveling over this holiday weekend, 36 million of them will drive. >> prices are low. >> reporter: so low the national average of $2.27 per gallon hasn't been this cheap since

2005. now, if you plan on being on the roads later today, get ready for some traffic. according to those at traffic navigation app the roads will be busiest at 10:00 tonight as people head home from the fireworks displays. and don't forget airports. terminals will also be jam packed with travelers. airlines booking a staggering 11 million seats this weekend. the busiest hubs are new york, las vegas, d.c. and chicago and l.a. >> i'm glad i'm here early. >> reporter: law enforcement not taking a day off this holiday. you will see more armed officers and canine units at airports across the u.s., ramping up security after a string of terror attacks in bangladesh and turkey and iraq in one week. officials are reminding all travelers, if you see something, say something. abc news, washington. construction is set to start tomorrow on one of san francisco's most dangerous streets. miss onic avenue between geary

and fell will undergo an $18 million improvement project. one lane of traffic will be eliminated. 167 parking spots will disappear and be replaced with wider sidewalks and bike paths and a median, including trees. well it is time to find out how our weather is for the holiday. >> so who could see the fireworks. >> that is a question. >> well, the answer is sort of iffy right now. we have blue skies over the embarcadero right now but low clouds and fog are stacking up at the coastline and beginning to spill through the golden date. so here is live doppler 7 hd and inland will have good viewing conditions for fireworks tonight but not so -- not so promising here in san francisco. on we go to current temperatures. you could see the ocean temperatures are pretty chilly. so are the air temperatures. only 62 degrees in san francisco right now. 67 across the bay in oakland. mainly 70s inland, but a couple of places are warmer, little league 86 and livermore 82 and brentwood 87. this is the view of the golden

gate bridge. it was fog iyer and now we get breaks in the low clouds at the golden gate bridge so maybe we'll have good luck with the fireworks in san francisco this evening. but we'll see low clouds pushing inland. cooler than average tomorrow and will remain cooler than average for the remainder of the week. but a warmer pattern developing ore -- over the weekend. and low temperatures under foggy conditions in the early morning hours generally in the low to mid-50s. and then tomorrow we'll see the fog bring back to the coastline much as it did today. in the south bay highs in the mid to upper 70s. 78 in san jose. and on the peninsula highs of 70 in san mateo. and 73 in mountain view. upper 50s on the coast. downtown san francisco will have a high of 62. south san francisco 64. up in the north bay, a range of highs from 75 at santa rosa to 72 at sonoma and 73 at napa. and 76 in oakland. 73 in hayward and the inland will be mainly in the upper 70s

a las vegas collector made a rare find on this independence day in a box of all documents he randomly bought, a copy of the declaration of independence produced in the 1830s. kevin costner, not that kevin costner, paid $75 for the documents at auction. that copy of the declaration of independence may be worth about $35,000. 201 copies were originally printed. only 50 are known to survive today. his copy has value to collectors since it was an early printing, part of a batch ordered printed by president adams. >> folded up and stained old piece of paper in there. and when i unfolded it, i realized it was an old copy of the declaration. it really connected you to the founding of our country. >> as to what he plans on doing with the copy, costner will frame it and hang it on his wall for a very long time.

competitive eater joey chestnut redeemed himself today and made hot dog history. >> final seconds -- and he got 70. >> the most hot dogs ever eaten on the corner -- >> oh, man, chestnut wolfed down a record-breaking 70 hot dogs in ten minutes at the nathan's hot dog eating contest and ousted matt stoney to win back the belt. chestnut ate 17 more hot dogs than stony who was runner-up. both man are from san jose. chestnut lost to stony last year. in the women's competition, defending champion suito ate 38 1/2 in 10 minutes to win the top prize and that is 4 1/2 more than her second place competitor. >> they look really happy after. >> it is a little uncomfortable.

and taking a look at your headlines at 4:30, independence day fireworks shows will light up around the bay area tonight. one of the largest is set to take place at 9:30 along the san francisco water front. specialists were triple checking the shells today and making sure they are ready for showtime. but will you be able to see the fireworks if you go. spencer christian tweets it may be more of a foggy-worked show in san francisco but elsewhere the skies should be clear. illegal fireworks are the focus of police and fire departments. laura anthony tweets few have turned fireworks in at collection bins at oakland fire stations. she'll have a live report at 5:00 on the busy night authorities are expecting in the east bay. and on this independence day, a debut is raging over a package of gun control measured sign into law by california lawmakers. david louie is live in morgan

hill with the concern about sports shooters worried about the impact of the laws. >> reporter: families with children as young as six have been known to come out here to do sports shooting. it is not for everyone. but those who enjoy the sport say that they are concerned that efforts to curb gun violence may impact them as well. as redwood city was celebrating independence day, congresswoman jackie spear was leading a sit-in similar to the ones the gop faced in response to gun violence legislation. in morgan hill, a group of friends from san francisco celebrated the fourth by picking up rifles for the first time in coyotes valley sporting clays. >> everybody is enjoying it. and at first we don't know what to do. but we just trying to figure it out and then shoot at a target. and it is fun. >> reporter: others come out here to sharpen skills for bird hunting or just for a love of the outdoors but it is a right some feel is being eroded as a result of pressure to pass

tighter laws to curb gun violence. irene is a shooting instructor. >> they don't understand that this is our sport, this is our hobby. and i know some of the answers to that is, well, find a different hobby. well this is the one that we like. >> reporter: representative spear believes there needs to be restrictions. >> it is probably fun to drive 100 miles per hour but we put speed limits in place. so they can still use their shotguns and have fun in the woods, but if they are interested in using an assault weapon to shoot down bam by, they won't have any venison. >> one side is talking tough and saying they are against gun violence but hope those can continue to enjoy it. >> it is every walk of life from families to single people to couples to you name it. >> reporter: in morgan hill, david louie, abc 7 news. >> right now, we want to take you to oklahoma city. >> where executive vice president manager sam presti is

busy market place crowded with families who had just ended their ramadan fast. isis has claimed responsibility. this is the militant group's third attack in a week after bangladesh and turkey. a series of explosions rocked saudi arabia including a blast near the holy sites in the city of medina. the explosion set a building on fire that overlooked a mosque. there is no information on whether anybody was injured or killed. the blast happened after two suicide bombers struck in different cities, kill -- without killing anyone. one of those happened near the u.s. consulate. >> tarishi jain was in daca for -- dhaka for the summer visiting a family and visiting. she was one of hostages killed in the attack by the islamic militants. she was a sophomore at cal. a noon vigil will take place in

her honor tomorrow. there is increased security across the country on this independence day. this comes as new york police continue to investigate a mysterious explosion that severely injured a tourist. elizabeth hur has a look at what is being done across the country today. >> reporter: with fireworks lighting up the skies and millions celebrating on the ground. >> be vigilant out there and be safe out there and look out for each other. >> reporter: it is all hands on deck for police across the country with the nation on alert and new york on edge. the nypd still investigating the source of the blast in central park. the 18-year-old victim visiting from virginia now npt in the hospital with his -- now in the hospital with his foot now amputated. >> with this young active man, somebody did it, i don't know who. >> reporter: authorities lean

the mega-millions jackpot is still rising. no winner over the weekend and the jackpot has now reached $449 million. that is the seventh biggest lottery jackpot of all-time. the next drawing is tuesday at 8:00. well, you don't have to win the lottery for the price of a modest apartment or condo in the bay area. you could instead buy an entire town in colorado. the owner of a small mountain town called cabin creek has listed his community on craigslist for $350,000. buyers should be warned, it really is a ghost town after being abandoned for decades. the old service station and cafe and old motel on the property are in states of disrepair. despite this, the owner said he sees opportunity. >> i want to find somebody that will come out here and see the potential like i did and do something cool with it so that i could drive by in ten years and go, finally.

>> cabin creek is commuting distance from denver which is about 45 minutes to the east. time now for an accuweather update. spencer, could we keep the blue skies tonight. >> we're trying. it is pretty blue right now. the fog seems to come and go and let's hope it just goes. here is a look at live doppler 7 hd. we have sunny skies over the bay and inland but stacked up at the coastline and continues to spill locally through the golden gate. tomorrow statewide, look for warm conditions in the interior sections of the state. and highs of 92 at chico. and 98 at fresno and yosemite. los angeles a high of 73. san diego 72 degrees. here in the bay area, we'll see a day much like today with fog at the coast, sunny inland. highs from upper 50s at the coast to low 80s inland. and for the week ahead, high temperatures are going to remain several degrees below average, for example in livermore, highs range from 80 to 82 through saturday. the average high for this time of the year is 86.
