celebrate the fourth of july by shooting off a gun in the air. >> reporter: this is what some of the neighbors will be in for tonight, a barrage of illegal fireworks, from sparklers to m-80s and roman candles, we're hoping tonight that individuals that come to the city will exercise good judgment and obviously in a perfect world what that good judgment means is they will leave the fireworks to the professionals. >> oakland fire will conduct special patrols to watch for hot spots and be close at hand in case of an emergency. oakland police will handle most of the enforcement action. >> are you going to enjoy it tonight or stay in the house. >> i'm going to enjoy it. >> reporter: but other residents told us they plan to stay safe by staying home. >> like i say, i am safe at home in the house. >> reporter: in oakland, laura then, abc 7 news. here you are looking at a costly fire in brentwood.

flames caused about a $100,000 in damage to a storage area used by town and country roofing. neighbors saw people setting off fireworks moments before the fire started after 10:00 last night. dry grass near hansen lane caught fire and the flames spread quickly and rose 50 feet into the air after they ignited building materials used by the roofing company. nobody was hurt. it took crews 12 hours to put out the fire. in southern california, a young girl is stable after losing a hand to exploding fireworks over the weekend. the victim's grandmother said she was leaving the fireworks when someone lit a fireworks and threw it in her direction. and the girl has injures to her face and other hand. no one has been arrested. no san francisco fourth of july fireworks show is getting a bit of a tweak this year. this is a live picture of the marina green as people are starting to arrive for tonight's big show. you see them all there.

organizers will set off the fireworks from two barges. >> the display is scheduled to last 23 minutes. this year there are fewer shells set to go higher than a thousand feet. and you could blame the fog. >> we don't want to lose them into the fog so we try to limit that and we try to kind of in tensefy the lower level. >> fog or no fog, the show will go on. but if you want to watch it in person, keep an eye out for towaway signs. parking is restricted on the water front. the show gets started at 9:30 sharp. and for a list of fireworks shows around the bay area tonight, just go to our website, abc 7.com. >> and spencer christian has a look at our fireworks forecast and some people have to contend with fog. >> it looks like that is the case. we are fog building at the coastline and pushing in. here is live doppler 7 hd. you could see inland, but the

fog shows signs of a strong push. before i get to the fog, i want to remind you we have a beach hazard advisory. a strong and dangerous rip currents are possibility and cold water could lead to hypothermia so stay away from the coastline. and now the advancing fog. it is expected by 9:30 tonight when the fireworks will begin here in san francisco. to have pushed rather far and strongly across the bay and locally inland. and that makes for an iffy situation here in san francisco. so with temperatures dropping into the upper 50s here in the city and a low 60s inland. we expect inland fireworks viewing to be -- the conditions to be pretty good but here in san francisco fog will probably play a role. so even if you don't get the clearest view ever of the fireworks, you will get bright and color low clouds. rick and ama, i have the complete forecast in a few minutes. >> spencer, looking forward to it. a lot of people hit the bay area porches today to enjoy --

beaches today so enjoy the holiday and some were hoping to catch a view close to shore. on friday we captured this great video of whales feeding off shore in pacifica. we are live there now with more. sergio. >> reporter: the fourth of july is all about family cookouts and fireworks but along the pacific coast lately it is all about the whale. most of the people at pacifica state beach are here to enjoy july fourth by the water. but there are a few here to see wildlife in the water. >> i was looking for the whales out there. i seen them yesterday. and they've been going through half moon bay and down through pacifica here. >> reporter: this is what he's looking for. in the last week a team of whales has been feeding in these waters. marine scientists tell us weather patterns seem to be pushing schools of fish close to the coast and that is what the wlals are after -- whales are after. surfers in pacifica are getting the best advantage point. >> i saw two whales and you know they are whales because all of

the birds. >> reporter: the national weather service has issued a beach hazard warning through the evening and anyone venturing into the water needs to be aware of strong rip currents. a few whales have been spotted at ocean beach in san francisco. and the chilly weather hasn't stopped plans. >> no one has cars so this is easy for everyone to get to without the travel. they have the new regulation which put a little drag on things but it is okay. >> reporter: fires are only allowed in concrete fire pits on ocean beach. but tonight the whole area closes at dark. rafael and his friends are in for the long haul. they brought plenty of food and packed up plenty of patriotism. even his dog is decked out to help celebrate the fourth of july. abc 7 news. firefighters across the state are busy this holiday fighting wildfires. the so-called trail head fire in el dorado in placer county has burned more than 5,000 acres and it is now 25% contained.

thousands of structures are still threatened but none have been damaged or destroyed. weather conditions helped crews maintain containment lines over the weekend. four helicopters and air crews from the state national guard have helped battle two wildfires in central california. in kern county, the deer fire has burned nearly 2,000 acres. it is 60% contained. residents who evacuated the area have been allowed back home. evacuation warnings inco coalinga were lifted ore -- over the weekend. the curry fire is 95% contained. crews will mop up hot spots for the next few days. >> the warriors, they created some fireworks today of their own adding more fire power to the team. >> kevin durant, one of the best in the nba, is coming to the golden state. durant sent out his announcement on twitter this morning saying my next chapter. the contract is worth -- oh,

san francisco firefighters arrived on the hill this morning to find a camper van engulfed in flames. the call came in at about 9:30 this morning. firefighters were investigating reports that fireworks were heard in the area prior to the blaze. they are not sure if fireworks were a factor or just a coincidence. a legendary bay bar in san francisco is on the verge of closing but help may be coming to save the stud bar south of market. >> a 300% rent hike is a big reason the owner has to close. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at the bar with more on the story. vic? >> reporter: well, eric, the bad

news is that these bars may become permanent. just two weeks ago the stud bar celebrated the 50-year anniversary. the good news is that there are people banding together to try to save it. [ laughter ] >> reporter: entertainer charro and countless other performers have wowed crowds at the stud bar over 50 years in business. but now faced with a 300% rent hike this san francisco institution is in danger of closing. >> it is absolutely devastating. >> reporter: caitlyn is a regular here. >> it is not just for the lgbt community, it is actually for a much larger population. it is for the whole of san francisco. >> reporter: crandall and about 100 employees and others were at a hurriedly call last night and the stud owner said new owners of the building are raising the

rent 300% come september to $9,000 a month. he said the represent increase and his mother's health are reasons he's going back home to hawaii. but out of the meeting, emerged a group that will try and save the stud. >> they are going to try and helpfully step in and buy the liquor license, and then with that perhaps move the bar to a different location. >> reporter: brian has been a bartender here for 27 years. he's offered to pay september's rent. >> i figured it would help buy some time so that for those that want to step in and do the right thing and try to make sure the bar survives, that we have that time to do it. >> reporter: the stud is the oldest continuously operating gay bar south of market. vic lee, abc 7 news. well customers weren't the only ones bargain hunting during sports authority final days. >> 7 on your side michael finney joins us with that story in

today's consumer news. but first michael, you are telling us about the thieves looking to take your phone upgrade and your service. >> thieves have found a new way to rip you off. your mobile phone account could be hijacked. thieves walk into stores and pretend to be you and ask to upgrade the phones. they walk out of a store with expensive new models and that is when your phone stops working. these thieves find a store that doesn't check i.d. or maybe they have someone working with them on the inside lending a hand. advice from here, if your phone stops working, report it immediately to the carrier. you could have been hijacked. if you ever shopped at sports authority, you may soon be contacted by dick's sporting goods. you may not know but they have your e-mail address and now you have a relationship with dick's. there may no longer by a sports authority chain but that doesn't mean the information the store gathered by you is going away. the christians science monitor

reports that dick's has reported the intellectual property and that includes your e-mail. it is all legal since the retailers told the customers this could happen. remember that the next time you sign up for rewards program, the information may live on even after the retailer closes. united airlines is giving passengers an upgrade when it comes to coffee. the carrier is switching to italian coffee maker eli. the change has sparked -- was sparked by customer feedback. the airline chose them because they represent the gold standard in premium coffee. the airline serves 72 million cups of coffee on its flights every year. and back to you. the u.s. senate is finally ditching the blackberry. staff will now be issued android phones or iphones. a memo from the senate sergeant at arms said blackberry has told verizon and at&t it will no

longer produce the devices. blackberry has fallen out of favor despite the reputation as one of the most secure phones on the market. the fourth of july has become a huge fundraising day in san bruno. we were at the shopping center as lokele groups -- local groups set up for the sale of fireworks. they are one of the last cities to allow the use of illegal fireworks. >> we get a lot of grief about still offering fireworks. but for us that are here, we make $12,000, $13,000 in fundraising business and nothing can bring that kind of money into a progroom. >> most people were spending way more than $100. fireworks are only legal if they are set off within san bruno but people could face fines for lighting off fireworks in parks or schools. delores park was busy in

afternoon. city crews are keeping an eye on the amount of garbage left behind. after pride weekend the park was trashed and crews spent 86 hours cleaning up, though this crowd is smaller than the pride crowd. the park tends to stay packed all day on july fourth. a tradition drew a huge crowd today. ♪ >> abc 7 news was in danville for that community holiday celebration. some people set out chairs at 6:00 p.m. yesterday to snag prime viewing spots. the parade dates back to 1958. the san ramon valley kiwanis club has sponsored the event for the past 40 years. thank you, thank you very much. and the king greeted those in the rose garden neighborhood this morning.

tens of thousands turned out for the celebration. this year's theme was bicycle the alameda. the crowd was encouraged to explore the area on bikes after the parade. some folks say you can't have a parade without a marching band. abc 7 news was in marin county today as a band and others took part in the parade through larks spur and corda mattera. >> and spencer christian is joining us with the accuweather forecast. it is our fireworks forecast, spencer. >> things are looking good, ama. we have some clouds building around the bay and on the coast but let's not panic. let's go to the maps. a live view from mt. tam looking at the advancing fog over the bay. but we still have good viewing conditions in san francisco tonight. just a little iffy right now. current temperature. 61 in san francisco. oakland 67. 73 in mountain view. 77 at morgan hill and 57 at half

moon bay. ant santa cruz beach, skies are cloudy but no fog on the beach. a lot of people on the beach. 66 degrees at santa rosa. napa 68. upper 70s at novato, fairfield and concord and 82 at livermore. and this is the view at the golden gate bridge. which has foggier in the afternoon. right now not looking bad. low clouds will push inland and cooler than average tomorrow and every day this week for that matter with warmer pattern developing over the weekend. and now let's talk about overnight conditions. the fog will push far inland during the overnight hours. and early morning lows will be generally in the low to mid-50s. but look at what happens in the day time tomorrow starting at 5:00 in the morning, we'll see the fog beginning to burn back to the coastline by mid to lay morning and by afternoon it will be mainly sunny over bait and inland once again with the fog resting in the daytime home, which is usually at the coast. south bay highs tomorrow, upper 70s. low to mid-70s on the peninsula. upper 50s on the coast. as fog lingers there.

62 is the high downtown san francisco tomorrow. up in the north bay, mainly sunny with highs in the low to mid-70s. on the east bay, mid-60s to low 70s. and the inland east bay, highs in the upper 70 tos to low 80s. and the accuweather seven-day forecast. highs in the low to mid-80s inland through saturday and low to mid-70s around the bay. upper 50s on the coast. so for the remainder of the week and the weekend, the daytime temperatures will average several degrees be low average but will bounce up several degrees on sunday and on monday back around 90 degrees. and as for fireworks in san francisco, conditions good inland, we'll have a blend of fog and fireworks here in the city tonight. >> thank you, spencer. want to show you news happening right now. burn ago long interstate 80 in west sacramento, you see the fire there and the smoke rising from it. you also saw a helicopter go past. might indicate an air attack. again, traffic moving slowly

these 11-week-old kittens were stolen from pet express in lafayette yesterday afternoon. they were being shown for adoption. the suspects, two teenage girls, grabbed the kittens and got away in a late model silver volvo. charity just wants them back, no questions asked. the roar of motorcycles

helped kick off today's fourth of july parade through downtown redwood city. newly crowned miss california jessica car macof santa clara waved to her admirers. this is a peninsula tradition that dates back to 1939. an orchestra atop a truck entertained the 20,000 people enjoying today's parade in alameda. 2400 people marched in 70 floats and cruised think alameda. it is one of america's biggest. joey-jaws-chestnut is relishing the national spotlight. he outdid himself at the annual nathan's hot dog eating contest at coney island wolfing down 70 dogs in ten minutes.

that is a new record. >> i can't even watch it. he reclaims the title from today's runner-up, matt stony who beat him last year in the contest. today chestnut ate 17 more hot dogs than stony. both are from san jose. on the women's side, las vegas resident and defending champion nicki sutto eight 38 1/2 hot dogs in ten minutes to win the top prize. that is 4 1/2 more than her second place competitor who just couldn't catch up. >> wow. in well next at 5:00, a promise of tasty burgers at a lower price. >> it is all thanks to high-tech and
