leslie brinkley, "abc7 news." >> check out the finale in san jose. the fireworks were downtown where thousands gathered around. but you could see it from all over the city. an exciting day in berkeley ended with a vibrant fireworks show. all across the bay area tonight, police and firefighters are on the watch for illegal fireworks and celebratory gunfire. this is the first year san jose offered an online forum to report illegal fireworks. approximately 280 reports have been submitted. the oakland fire department is out on patrol looking for dangerous situations. oakland's crackdown seemed to have little effect. people launched illegal fireworks across oakland beginning at dusk this evening. this is video by a viewer in oakland's crest mont neighborhood.

people have reported seeing fireworks in neighborhoods across oakland. peter croft posted this video on youtube just a short time ago. people setting off illegal fireworks in oakland could face fines raenging from $1,000 to $10,000. in san francisco, this is not the city's show, it's somebody setting off illegal fireworks near north beach. we'll have more on the problem of illegal fireworks shows in the bay area coming up on the abc 7 morning news at 4:30 tomorrow morning. a family member of a man who was shot and killed by san jose police is offering new insight into what happened. katie is live from the scene at story road and seller avenue. >> reporter: ama, you can see police are still on the scene here, six hours after the shooting. it's been a somber night for this community, and a traumatic one for family members who waited right here for word on their loved one.

>> i just happened to get in between his legs, but in his right hand. >> reporter: police were called to a house near story road just before 5:00 p.m. sometime after they arrived, there was an officer involved shooting. >> shots fired. >> copy, shots fired. >> reporter: a family member tells me it was his 18-year-old nephew shot and killed. because his nephew was depressed and tried to kill himself before police arrived. police have not said why they fired on the man. a witness described what he heard and saw after police arrived. >> that's when we heard two gunshots and it sounded like high power rifle shots. somebody was screaming and saw one man banging his head on the window. >> reporter: he and other neighbors agree this was a rare occurrence for this typically quiet neighborhood. police say the investigation is ongoing. investigators haven't ruled

out illegal fireworks for sparking a fire that drove a woman and her dog out of their home in the open hills. "abc7 news" was there as firefighters looked for hot spots. the fire broke out just after 6:00 this evening. nobody was hurt. crews stopped the flames before they reached nearby homes. san francisco fire crews rescued a woman and dog trapped on a cliff. the fire department tweeted out these photos. the dog went over the cliff and the owner tried to rescue it. neither was injured. a grassroots effort is under way. the current owner of the stud bar wants to close due to rent tripping in september. a group of employees and patrons wants to form a co-op to keep it open at 9th and harrison street. >> it's been around for years, it's been part of our lbgt
