breaking news happening right now along the emeryville oakland border where a massive fire destroyed an apartment building under construction. >> dozens of people had to be evacuated. we have been tracking this all morning. if you have our abc 7 ins app you got a push alert about this an hour ago. back to reporter amy hollyfield. this is now a six-alarm fire. >> reporter: six-alarm fire. not something you hear every day. lock behind me. firefighters say they'll be here

several hours. they're worried about the building collapsing. look at how huge the fire was earlier. wait until you see these pictures. you think it's bad now. this one started at 2:45 this morning. people said they saw it from the bay bridge. we saw it driving down the interstate as we were pulling in from the east bay and hard to believe. huge ball of fire. this is a building right in emeryville right on the border with oakland. it's an apartment building under construction and no one was living here. there was a crane or is a crane here on the scene that's being used in the construction an one point that crane was a threat to firefighters. >> construction crane over the top and it was moving around significantly. which it should not be doing. based on the heat of the fire and things going on so there were -- we were worried about the crane coming down, as well. >> reporter: there are evacuations in place. 900 block of apgar evacuated and

101 units on adeleine asked to leave the homes just in case. but we haven't heard of any injuries 0er any other buildings that have been impacted. there was a water issue at one point. the ladder trucks are spraying 500 to 1,000 gallons a minute and they had to ask east bay mud to increase the water pressure to the yaer and draining so much to get the fire doused and try to start getting it under control. they don't know when exactly that's going to happen. they say, again, they'll be here for several hours. we are standing in oakland, reporting live from oakland, the building that was in emeryville, on the border, reporting live from oakland, abc 7 news. >> amy, thanks so much and will be there throughout the morning monitoring this. this is just about five minutes away from the ikea, home depot in the area. if you're familiar. visible from 580, as well. sue hall tracking traffic issues

for us. >> near the macarthur maze coming together. here's a live shot of emeryville. the emergency lights are right here. this is 580 merging in to 80 and macarthur maze and viz frbl the roadway. the flames tamped down a bit and smoke is a concern for these folks. they have shut down that west macarthur on-ramp to 580 because of the crane and worried it would come down and shut that down. surface streets as you might imagine in the area are all blocked off so avoid the area if you can. the winds blowing out of the southwest to northeast from oakland, emeryville, berkeley, and even richmond so that's where the smoke is going right now. as far as the marine layer, influence on the forecast, yeah, cooler than average once again. waking up this morning, 50 to 58. staying in the 50s at the coast.

74 inland by noon. 80 by 4:00. developing news in the south bay, four drivers hit by gun fire in san jose. abc 7 news reporter matt keller live along blossom hill road this morning. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning. i checked in with san jose police an hour ago and told me no shootings overnight here in south san jose. but they also said there have been no arrests. now, this is obviously scary for the people living in this neighborhood in south san jose. the shootings between midnight and 1:00 a.m. the first shooting was may 4th here blossom hill and poughkeepsie. a month later, another shooting, this time grazed by a bullet. another shooting june 30th, a male driver's car and the last one this past saturday july 2nd. car shot with shrapnel or glass hitting the driver. all of this is making people here in this neighborhood nervous. >> i'm scared. i mean, i don't know what will happen to me walking out of my

over the emeryville-oakland border pretty close to 580, the exit of macarthur. this is a building that was under construction and continues to burn. a six-alarm fire this morning. firefighters are still trying to knock down. as sky 7 is zooming out, you can see that the fire is a pretty large area and because of that, evacuated folks in the nearby neighborhoods. so far, no reports of injuries and causing a lot of smoke. >> certainly a lot of smoke for people through the area. close to the ikea and home depot and this is something we discovered as we spent sky 7 hd up. a block away, a smaller fire is actually burning at this time so of course we'll monitor this. we know that cars in danger in this area because the fire is certainly in danger of spreading. so we are just hearing the desk confirming some information. we'll did that to you. >> there's the other fire that

natasha is talking about. at least a block away from where the main fire is and going to continue to monitor that. amy hollyfield is on the ground. a big whoops this morning from hayward officials. thought they were bringing a sidewalk up to federal code but destroyed a landmark used as a learning tool. we have the explanation. >> reporter: this is what the curb used the look like on hay ward's rose and prospects streets. this is it now. the city repaired it and some say they ruined it. it shows the dramatic movement of the hay ward fault. a section of it runs under the street. >> it was a landmark and people km here and kind of measure, i guess, how much the plate is moving. >> it was cool. >> reporter: the city tore it out and upgraded the intersection to make it wheelchair accessible. science writer took the pictures in the many visits calling it an icon for geologists, a textbook

example of an earthquake creep. the neighborhood said buses of college students took field trips here and surprised the city removed the important tool. >> yes, you have to fix the streets and, yes, potholes. but that was -- that was there to measure, you know, the fault line. you know? the city should have known that. >> reporter: assistant city manager says they didn't know. >> unfortunately, weren't aware of the site prior to doing the work. there's a lot of sites within the city that people are monitoring either informally or formally, seismic activity. we have the fault in the community. >> reporter: it is too late to do anything about it now and encourages people to know of them of landmarks so the city copes record of it and take that into consideration for future projects. in hay ward, abc 7 news. some residents in san francisco's mission district are saying that homeless people in the neighborhood are a problem.

one resident said crime increased as of one year ago and district attorney's said neighbors, police and d.a. need to work together to target troublemakers. >> we need people to come forward. we need people to really report crime and really report incidents to build a case. >> harass families and we say something to them, they threaten us. >> we're here because of the fact there's no housing. >> well, mission district supervisor saying he's working with the community for weeks on the issue. navigation centers have path to permanent housing and will open new a few years. an effort under way to speed your trip through the airport with ct scans to screen your luggage. the tsa relies on ct scanning for checked baggage or hazardous items. officials hope the scanners and other changes cut the time you spend in line by about 30%.

the tsa will test them in phoenix by the end of the year. all right. we are closely monitoring the six-alarm fire that now appears to have spread potentially to a structure about a block away. we know sue hall is tracking the traffic impact for us this morning. good morning, sue. >> it is quite the hazard as you might imagine. this is the emeryville camera live. a lot of smoke, 580. this is the macarthur maze. parts of 80, as well. and smoke probably the biggest hazard right now. it is dark and getting lighter out but traffic seems to be flowing nicely now. on the surface streets, blocked off. adeline behind the ikea building they have shut down. this is the fire about a block or so away. the surface streets once again completely blocked off with fire crews. and the overpasses an underpasses west macarthur also shut down right now due to safety issues, as well. we'll be monitoring this and

applications for appeal going forward. and oscar will serve a sentence as handed down. >> macepa is judge in the case. it's been a three-year legal battle for the man known as the blade runner, it's been a long saga. 27-year-old kath leet found guilty of culpable homicide in 2014 and spent a year behind bars and overturned by the south african supreme court. and then upgraded the charge to murder. pistorius' lawyers tried to fight that and did not work. although he faced up to 15 years and he didn't get the maximum punishment. again, facing six years in prison. back to you. >> jessica, thank you. another twist this morning in the sex investigation involving police and an underaged girl. the contra costa county public defender looking into cases handled by five richmond police officers and a former sheriff's deputy. they're accused of having sex with the woman you see on the

screen there, celeste. she told the i-team she had sex with more than 30 officers in the bay area. some of the richmond officers under investigation may prostitution arrests as a part of the career. the public defender want it is know if their alleged involvement influenced their actions. in a statement, richmond's police chief said i'm sorry it brings embarrassment to the professional men and women of the richmond police department and our community. a san francisco police sergeant ki yetly retired. he allegedly made racist statements. the examiner's reporting the sergeant left the force last month rather than be fired. he was a 17-year veteran. in february the department learned that he had used language with sexual and racial undertones at bay view station reported by two witnesses. happening today in the north bay, two teens charged with killing a nevada high school student entering a plea in court. the 17-year-old juan carlos martinez enriquez and

still insisting they're right despite the conclusion of a yearlong conclusion. a facebook engineer accused of raping a friend and refusing to let her leave the home in palo alto. the officers arrested the man yesterday. the victim said she drove him home after going out to dinner with friends on june 24'd. she went inside his house for a glass of water. that's when the victim said he raped her and he used a knife to hold her against her will. she was able to escape several hours later. >> she essentially distracted him momentarily and able to get out the front door to the car. >> i believe he's innocent. i don't think he did anything. she's a soft spoken guy. i spoke with him last night and he didn't seem distraught or shook up. >> police don't believe there are anymore possible victims in this case. well, starting in just about an hour, removal of the fourth of five trusses on the owner eastern pan of the bay bridge begins. the truss lowered and then taken to the port of oakland to be broken down. the work takes about two days.
