neighbors what they heard. the blaze destroyed an apartment complex under construction and damaged nearby townhomes. leslie is at the scene. >> reporter: investigators and inspectors are basically on standby. they can't go inside the burned down build right now because the fire has not yet been extingu h extinguished completely. i just talked to the emoryville police chief. she confirmed for me someone broke into this construction site over the fourth of july holiday a couple days before the fire. they stole tools like drills and hammers and radios, seemingly n insignificant at the time. now, given the fire, that will warrant further investigation. this is still an active fire scene from this rooftop view, hot spots, a lot of them are still visibly smoldering meaning structural engineers and experts

are confined to inspecting only the perimeter. fences going up to safe guard the property. >> we are here because of the size of this fire and resources we bring and expertise. >> reporter: atf is bringing in a national response team of 20 experts that will friday work with local investigators to figure out what triggered this massive six alarm fire early wednesday. it destroyed a five story apartment building under construction and adjacent town home and will include structural engineer and k9 units to find accelerants. >> nothing is ruled out. >> reporter: there were reports of illegal firearms and burglary at the site two days before. bruce ingram supervises the commercial project across the street and pointed out the damage from the extreme heat that blew out windows. he believes the tangle of metal and debris is a total loss. >> it's an engineer's nightmare.

neighbors in two san jose communities are concerned after four recent coyote sightings. in at least one case it's believed a coyote victimized a beloved pet. live in the west san jose community of country lane, that's where a cat was killed? >> reporter: mimi the cat was beloved in this neighborhood and liked to sit on the driveway and greet people. last week she became the victim
