[ sirens ] [ gunfire ] >> get back, get back! >> that breaking news is in texas. snipers open fire during a protest. 11 officers have been shot, four are dead. >> police have cornered one of the gunmen, but now he's threatening to detonate bombs across dallas. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm a. >> the gunfire started about 8:45 dallas time, as protesters were demonstrating against the shooting death of two black men in louisiana and minnesota. >> katie has been following the story and joins us live. >> reporter: we're just learning from dallas police that currently officers have been orb i should say the last 45 minutes in a standoff and exchanging gunfire with the suspect.

the police chief just said this. >> the suspect that we are negotiating with, that has exchanged gunfire with us over the last 45 minutes, has told our negotiators that the end is coming, and he's going to hurt and kill more of us, meaning law enforcement, and that there are bombs all over the place in this garage and in downtown. so we are being very careful in our tactics so that we don't injure or put any of our officers in harm's way, including the citizens of dallas. >> he went on to say a woman who was in the area was taken into custody, and we know from earlier that another suspect was taken into custody after a shootout with s.w.a.t. officers and that a suspicious package was found near his location. you see an earlier person of interest. that picture was circulated. that man turned himself in.

this shooting was intense. the sound of gunfire was captured on video. [ gunfire ] [ sirens ] >> get back, get back! >> reporter: a total of 11 officers were shot, they are members of the dallas police department and dallas area rapid transit. four were killed. one rapid transit officer and three police officers, one civilian was also shot and wounded. the scene was chaos. there were hundreds of people at the protest when the shooting began. >> let's go, get back! >> all of a sudden we heard echoes and seen people running. as we were walking towards the parking garage, it got louder and louder. >> cops with rifles going in the front, people crying, running out. >> he missed the dude, the dude

snuck around him and shot him. he emptied a whole clip in the police officer's chest. >> reporter: then another scene in dallas. an officer saw a man carrying a camouflage bag, throw it into a mercedes and speed off. police stopped that car. the police chief says the two people in the car are being questioned. again, still a very active scene in dallas. a suspect still shooting at police and making terrifying threats. back to you. >> katie, thank you. some police departments are ordering their officers to pair up on patrols. the order is in effect in san jose tonight, as well as seattle, houston, and several other departments. law enforcement agencies across the country are sending their condolences to dallas. they sent out this tweet tonight -- >> and oakland police sent out this tweet -- our thoughts and

hours later, 880 is still shut down. minutes ago, protesters tweeted out a request for blankets and water. let's showout the very latest. protesters marched onto 880 about 8:30 tonight. sky 7-hd was overhead has they blocked both directions of the freeway near broadway. some set off fireworks and climbed onto the top of a big rig, refusing to leave. so far, police have not attempted to move the group off the freeway, as you might imagine. traffic around the protest is gridlocked. >> no justice, no peace! no justice, no peace! >> reporter: now, earlier demonstrators supporting black lives matter marched down broadway. earlier demonstrators supporting black lives matter marched down broadway to oakland police headquarters where officers surrounded the building. protesters demanded justice for

the police shootings of two black men shot this week in louisiana and minnesota. one woman from st. paul was outraged. >> i am very upset and outraged. he was a member of our community up there. he was born and raised, had a great family, and i'm just very upset and i'm embarrassed. i'm embarrassed that something again like this happened in my city. >> we have to stand together. there's no more fighting each other. we cannot do it anymore. we need each other. we need each other. we have to have each other. we ain't got nobody left. we cannot trust the people who are supposed to patrol our streets. >> reporter: now, 880 is still shut down. sky 7 hd shot these images earlier tonight before it was forced to land because of fog. protesters have apparently spray painted graffiti on the freeway,

snipers open fire. 11 officers hit, four have died. the dallas police chief just moments ago explaining that for more than 45 minutes now, officers have been ex-changing gunfire with the suspect. that suspect has told them the end is coming. more officers will be hurt and killed, and that there are explosives planted throughout the city. we also know one suspect was taken into custody after a shootout with s.w.a.t. officers. the photo you just saw there, a man considered a person of interest. he turned himself in, but the man who was in the shootout, there was a bomb found near his location. the bomb squad is investigating that. we've also learned most recently that a woman who was in the area was also taken into custody. dan and ama, back to you. >> katie, thank you. here is a first look at the front page of tomorrow's "dallas morning news," ambush, 11 officers shot, four dead. snipers fire on downtown protests. follow us on twitter for the

latest on this breaking story and we'll have another update later in this news cast. in oakland right now, 880 remains shut down in both directions, where up to 500 anti-police protesters are holding a sit-in. it's been going on like this for more than 2 1/2 hours now. more breaking news, this out of palo alto where police say they're investigating a suspicious death inside a home in the southern part of the city. >> lisa is live at the scene. lisa? >> reporter: dan, still a lot of activity out here at the scene. detectives and deputies are all still here. their focused on a house on the right side of the street. that's where a body was found. right now, detectives are waiting for a search warrant so they can go through the entire house. they will not say how this person died. officers were called here before 8:00 tonight after someone else who lives at the home found the victim and then dialed 911. a lot of neighbors were out here

we have an update on breaking news. police in dallas are in negotiations with the suspect involved in a planned attack on officers tonight. it happened during an anti-police violence rally. a boom and sounds of broken glass were just reported during the standoff. investigators say the suspect told them bombs are in the area. four officers were killed in the attack and seven more wounded. join us at 4:30 a.m. for the very latest on this, on the abc 7 morning news with an update on the dallas ambush. more breaking news in oakland where protesters have shut down 880 in both directions near broadway for almost three hours now. the chp has just given them a disbursal order. >> more on that on the morning
