now reporting, george stephanopoulos. we are coming on the air now because president obama is about to speak, addressing for the first time that ambush shooting of 11 police officers in dallas overnight. five of those officers have died, making this the deadliest day for law enforcement since 9/11. it all began to unfold around 9:00 p.m. overnight during a black lives matter protest of the shooting in louisiana and minnesota. you see the commotion there. at one point during the protests, snipers open fire on police officers, sending protesters running. three of those suspects are now in custody. a fourth is reportedly died in a shootout with police or after a shootout with police on the scene. i want to go to adrienne bankert on the scene right now where that shootout occurred. what's the latest? >> reporter: as you mentioned, we're still waiting to confirm the status of that gunman, that

sniper who shot at officers at will from the second story of the el centro college garage, which is about two blocks away from where we're standing right now in the west end neighborhood of dallas. a very quiet neighborhood, beautiful, historic. and tonight terrorized by the violence of this sniper or snipers, who were firing at officers, as you mentioned, five of them killed in the gun fight. 11 in all were hit. one civilian was also wounded. among the dead we're hearing more stories from those who knew these officers. in fact, major max gerrin from the dallas pd that all the officers knew the fallen. in addition to undergoing this investigation, including a complete sweech downtown with word the gunman threatened to place bombs throughout the city, they're also mourning the loss of those who died. george? >> that's right. the fear now that bombs have been placed in dallas as well.

adrienne, thanks very much. let's go back to the scene in poland where president obama is about to come out and speak. he had to speak out also about that killing in minnesota of the black man in minnesota by the police officer who we saw yesterday. also killing in baton rouge earlier this week. racial tensions so high across the country right now. there have been protests across the country, in times square in new york up. see the officers at parkland hospital in dallas honoring their fellow officers who were killed and wounded by that strike last night. so much more still to learn. here the president in poland for meetings with european leaders is expected to go on to spain, but he is obviously compelled to speak out about this right now. and we should expect in dallas today, county offices will be closed throughout downtown dallas. the situation not completely on

lockdown right now. as i said, three suspects are now in custody. a fourth reportedly has died. so much chaos and commotion last night. you see it right there. police officers on the run, trying to find out what appeared to be quite a sophisticated operation. you hear the gunfire right there. the snipers staking out above the protest. at one point there was a gun fight between one of the shooters and a police officer who were gunned down. almost execution-style as well. it was just a horrific scene unfolding in dallas right there. as we said, 11 police officers shot, 5 killed in this sniper attack. one civilian was shot who were attending the rally with her children as well. her name is shemia taylor and she says she jumped on top of

the boys as the shots were fired. she was injured in that shooting as well. police officers swarming throughout downtown dallas as we wait for president obama in poland right now. adrienne, i want to go back to you right now. what can you tell us about the scene right now and what you expect to unfold this morning in dallas? >> reporter: from what we're hearing from dallas police, the standoff itself is over. as we mentioned. there seems to be some type of closure at least with this particular sniper, the one you were talking about, george, who was in this combative negotiation with officers, if you can even call it a negotiation. the police of chief saying he was screaming out at officers, saying the end was coming, threatening there were bombs plant throughout downtown dallas, which is why they're taking their extensive sweep, which they say will take some time.

this is a congested area. you talk about some offices being on lockdown. el centro college was on lockdown an hour before shootings. they were anticipating this protest might not be as safe, but it was peaceful up until the moment of these shootings. some of the staff and students were inside of that building, that community college building while all of this commotion was going on. we talked to one of the student affairs counselors who happened to walk by a few minutes before this special report. he told us, everybody's okay. some didn't even hear the commotion, didn't hear the gunshots. he wanted to make sure everyone was accounted for and everyone did get out safely. we're told el centro college will be closed today, friday. as you can imagine, this whole neighborhood was shut down. still businesses shuddered as a result of the violence here in what is normally a very quiet and peaceful place. again, we are so close to major landmarks for downtown and

central dallas. clyde warren park is a highlight of the community here. we're moments away from reunion tower. some buildings in the dallas skyline lit up in blue to honor those five officers killed in cold-blooded assassination-style killings that really do take you back to the orlando shooting. even though this is a totally different scenario. like you said, george, we haven't seen violence like this against our peace officers since 9/11, at least in terms of how many died. >> as we wait for the president, let's take a look at the scene in dallas as those first shots were fired. let's listen. >> after the first shots, they said another shot went off and then it became a barrage of shots fired. they all began to run. and right as she started to run, she caught a bullet in the back of her right calf. she immediately jumped on top of one of her sons and covered him. the other three ran different directions.

>> and, of course, this comes after the shootings earlier in the week in louisiana and minnesota. alton sterling, philando castile taking place. protests across the country right now. so much tension in the wake of those shootings. now this is just likely to explode as we wait for the president there in poland. we see him right there. and, adrienne, this happened at around the 9:00 p.m. what can you tell us about what was happening with the protests before the shooting took place. had there been any violence at all or mostly peaceful? >> reporter: it was all peaceful. in fact, if you go back on twitter and some of the dallas police officers' feeds, i found pictures of police officers smiling alongside protesters with signs that said, no justice, no peace. all the people beaming. obviously, this is not indicative of every police protest or protest for black lives matter but this was very large, a significant amount of people marching through the

streets of dallas, but we hadn't had any reports of violence until the shots rang out. we know at least one of those men was on the second story of this parking garage. and had threatened to kill more. in fact, police telling us, this man was just focused on killing as many officers as possible. some reportedly shot in the back. initial reports were that just a couple officers had been shot, but it was mind-boggling to think how many this man got away with killing before the violence was able to end. it was calculated and it was planned, from what the police have said. >> adrienne, have they found any explosive devices at all? that was the threat from one of the gunman, but have they found anything? >> reporter: from what we're told, they have found no explosive devices. saying, there is no confirmation that this sniper's words are true, although they found a suspicious package near el centro college and we heard a

loud bang a couple of hours ago. we don't know what that loud bang was. it could have been they were blowing up that suspicious package. it do coo have been they were spooking the sniper as they were trying to get a handle on the situation. at one point he was still firing at officers hours after this melee happened at 9:00 p.m. he was not cooperating with police. so, again, the standoff here is over. we're right on the corner of lamar and ross, those familiar with the dallas area in what's called the west end neighborhood. still police have shut down many streets. a number of different exits, on-ramps and off-ramps. but the standoff is now over. the suspect's condition is yet to be confirmed. >> do we know anything at all about the suspects who are now in custody, the three suspects now in custody? and do police believe -- i know this information is still coming in right now. do police believe there were oer others involved who may not be in custody? >> reporter: it's interesting.

in a press conference with mayor mike rawlings and chief police brown, they spoke about not sure if they did have all of the suspects in custody. they had one sniper still firing on officers, and three suspects in custody, one woman near el centro, she was on the ground. another two in a mercedes driving off. george? >> we see president obama now. thank you for the opportunity to meet today. with your understanding, i want to begin with a few words about the situation back in the united states, specifically the situation in dallas, texas. my team has been keeping me updated throughout the morning, about the evening in dallas. i spoke with mayor rawlings in dallas to convey the deepest

condolences of the american people. i told him the federal government will provide whatever assistance dallas may need as it deals with this tremendous tragedy. we still don't know all the facts. what we do know is that there has been a vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement. police in dallas were on duty, doing their jobs, keeping people safe during peaceful protests. these law enforcement officers were targeted, and nearly a dozen officers were shot. five were killed. other officers and at least one civilian were wounded. some are in serious condition and we are praying for their recovery. as i told mayor rawlings, and i believe i speak for every single american when i say we are

horrified over these events and we stand united with the people and the police department in dallas. according to police, there are multiple suspects. we will learn more, undoubtedly, about the twisted motivations. but let's be clear, there's no possible justification for these kinds of attacks or any violence against law enforcement. the fbi is already in touch with the dallas police. anyone involved in these senseless murders will be held fully accountable. justice will be done. i will have more to say about this as the facts become more clear. for now, let me just say that even as of yesterday i spoke about our need to be concerned as all americans about racial disparities in our criminal justice system. i also said yesterday that our

police have an extraordinarily difficult job. and the vast majority of them do their job in outstanding fashion. i also indicated the degree to which we need to be supportive of those officers who do their job each and every day, protecting us and protecting our communities. today is a wrenching reminder of the sacrifices they make for us. we also know that when people are armed with powerful weapons, unfortunately, it makes attacks like these more deadly and more tragic. and in the days ahead, we're going to have to consider those realities as well. in the meantime, today our focus is on the victims and their families. they are heartbroken. the entire city of dallas is

grieving. the police across america, which is a tight-knit family, feels this loss to their core and we're grieving with them. i ask all americans to say a prayer for these officers and their families, keep them in your thoughts. as a nation, we express our profound gratitude to our men and women, not just today, but every day. with that, i want to thank the presidents -- >> there we have from president obama expressing his condolences of the victims of the shootings. he says all americans are horrified by what happened to the dallas police officers. five police officers killed in what the president called a vicious, calculated, despicable attack. he says they were targeted. three suspects in custody. a fourth, reportedly, has been killed. deadliest day for police officers since 9/11. we'll have much more today on

breaking news in america this morning. a deadly attack on police in downtown dallas. several police officers are dead after snipers open fire. >> protesters running for their lives at a demonstration against police-involved killings. officers taking cover and hunting for the gunmen. suspects now in custody. >> the suspect that we are negotiating with has told our negotiators that the end is coming and he's going to hurt and kill more of us. >> college students and staff locked down and stranded for hours. a major american city in shock this morning. this is a special edition of "america this morning." >> announcer: from abc news in new york, this is "america this morning."

we begin with breaking news from dallas. an ambush on police after snipers open fire during a protest march. >> here's what we know right now. 11 officers were shot. at least five of them are dead. six are seriously injured. one bystander was hurt in all of this. so far, police say they have three people in custody. overnight they cornered a fourth person in a parking garage who exchanged gunfire with police. >> the demonstration through the downtown area had been peaceful until the gunfire triggered fear and panic, sending people running for cover. >> oh, my god. they're -- they can't be firing. oh, my god. >> just listen to that barrage of gunfire that took place there in the heart of dallas last night. absolutely unbelievable to hear that. according to the dallas police chief, the suspect cornered in a parking garage is refusing to cooperate with s.w.a.t. team negotiators this morning.

>> overnight the chief said that suspect was threatening more violence against members of law enforcement. >> the suspect that we are negotiating with that has exchanged gunfire with us over the last 45 minutes has told our negotiators that the end is coming and he's going to hurt and kill more of us, meaning law enforcement, and that there are bombs all over the place in this garage and in downtown. >> we're also learning more about a bystander injured during the gunfire. a woman who had been taking part in the march was shielding her sons when she was hit in the calf by a bullet. her sister says she's undergoing surgery this morning. >> this situation is very much still developing at this hour. abc's adrienne bankert arrived on the scene moments after those shots were fired. she joins us right now. adrienne, how is it looking now? >> reporter: good morning to

you. right now we're at the corner of lamar and ross in the west end of dallas. this is considered part of downtown dallas. but for those who are natives here, for those that live here, the shots of gunfire at such rapid succession is unheard of in this neighborhood, unheard of in this community. then to only find out that five officers have been killed in this deadly rage. it followed what was a peaceful protest here on the streets of dallas. if you looked on social media, you saw photos of demonstrators side by side with police officers, with smiles on their faces. no one could have predicted that a sniper would have fired down on officers, targeting men and women in uniform. 11 officers hit in all. one civilian, as you mentioned earlier. the scene has become quieter here, as we enter an investigation stage. though, we've seen helicopters flying above, we heard flash bangs or some type of explosive sound earlier this morning. we also have seen a number of fire engines and police cars way

speeding away from the scene. those streets are blocked off in this dallas neighborhood right now as they continue to investigate the situation. we heard earlier from the dallas police chief, who said they were not sure if they did, indeed, have all of the suspects in custody. but, you know, we want to put a name to some of these numbers because so often we tell you how many people have died, but we don't tell you the who. d.a.r.t., dallas area rapid transit, losing one of their own. officer brent thompson, only 43 years old. the first officer to die in the near 30-year history of d.a.r.t. police. diane and kendis, back to you. >> adrienne, we also heard from the police chief that one of those suspects is threatening more violence against officers, there were threats of possible bombs in the area. what is the latest in the investigation on that front? >> reporter: we've had rumors that this situation has come to some type of end, but we don't

want to give out any information we have yet to confirm. it's quieter here, which signals to us that one of two things has happened. either the officers were able to get the upperhand with this shooter or it ended in some type of fashion. we really don't want to say anything that would not be confirmed yet through the dallas police. but we do know we're still awaiting word from them and the investigation continues as to why these shooters were able to get up into the garage and fire on officers, what their real motive was, though it is evident they were out to kill police. diane and kendis. >> absolutely. seemed definitely targeted, when you have hundreds of people there and 100 police officers and 11 officers specifically shot. >> that's right. only one bystander, as well, caught in the crossfire. the police chief said this was an ambush. our thanks to adrienne there. in these kinds of situations, so much information coming through. we appreciate all you're doing this morning. this all happened, keep in mind, in a very crowded area of

downtown. we're now just getting video shot by a student at nearby el centro college. he was with others in a stairwell as those gunshots rang out. >> the college located not far from where adrienne was and the college was put on lockdown. everyone was evacuated overnight. >> her sister was wounded and undergoing surgery. this is now the deadliest day for law enforcement since the september 11th attacks. >> which is an unbelievable thing to think about right there. the worst attack and deadliest attack on law enforcement in this country since 9/11. we to want bring in in the meantime our former fbi agent steve gomez who we spoke to earlier about how police are handling these protests in dallas and around the country, and the response law enforcement can take moving forward. >> well, you know, they had a command post that was established for this type of protest. i mean, they always do that when they have this special type of event, which this would have been considered given the situation occurring in the two cities, where the shootings --

cop shootings were. so, there was already a flow of information that was happening during the protest. once the shootings occurred, you can only imagine the level of activity that increased probably hundredfold with just reports from the cops, tips coming in from the public and so on. so, all that information is now being collated, pulled together. they have tons of officers and investigators coming in to do interviews as they have identified suspects, they are going through their electronic, you know, devices, social media and so on and bringing that together. they're contacting family members, neighbors, friends, work associates. they're trying to figure out where they acquired the weapons. so, atf is going to take the lead on trying to figure out the weapons they were using to -- to shoot at the officers, where did they get those weapons, who purchased those weapons. these are all the methods that are tried and true in law enforcement that are going to be used.

and it's going to be an even higher profile and much more intense investigation because of the fact they targeted cops. and that's -- you know, a cop killer is one of the worst things in the world. the fact these two individuals at the very least, if not more, took the step to kill cops. this is one of the biggest cases we've ever seen because it involves cops being targeted and killed. >> our thanks to steve gomez who knows the situation very well, a former lapd officer. president obama has been briefed on the deadly attack in dallas as he attends a nato summit in poland today. >> before those officers in dallas were killed, the president had addressed the police-involved shootings in minnesota and louisiana. that sparked those protests originally. he said the shootings were not isolated but, rather, symptomatic of a broader set of racial disparities. the president also, though, acknowledged the heavy burden on police officers saying, quote, when people say black lives matter, it doesn't mean blue

lives don't matter. >> quite interesting now to hear that after all that's happened in the last 12 hours or so. >> that's right. and back in dallas, an emotional scene. the american flag at half-staff. this is outside the dallas police association. >> now, on the group's twitter page, it says, quote, goodwill triumph over this evil a and #prayfordallas. it was shocking this morning when we learned of the fifth person, the dpa, dallas police association, tweeting out, we've lost another one. >> that's right. and this news continues to develop this morning. both on the investigation and what's happening with the victims this morning. we know several officers still injured this morning and still dealing with that as well as the civilian in surgery at the moment. still ahead, much more from dallas. plus, our news. fbi director james comey setting the record straight about the investigation into hillary clinton's e-mail server. also breaking overnight, a suspect taken into custody after a series of attacks on the streets of san diego.

we are following breaking news out of dallas this morning where snipers open fire during a protest there. it was just one of many that was happening around the country organized to protest two fatal police shootings in minnesota and lugs lose this week. >> y >> demonstrators hit the streets here in new york city, they marched from union square to times square, chanting and carrying protest signs. it was mostly peaceful. on the west coast, in oakland, about 2,000 protesters marched from city hall to a major highway there, where they blocked traffic, set off fireworks and broke some windows. meanwhile, one of the shootings that was the trigger for those protests was this one, live streamed in minnesota.

the woman seen there in that video spoke about the aftermath. diamond reynolds says it all started when she and her boyfriend, philando castile, were pulled over for a broken taillight. >> she says he was reaching for his i.d. when officers shot and killed him. reynolds was remarkably composed during that live stream. but now that reality has set in, she says she's actually consumed with anger, understandably, as well as grief over what she and many others are calling a senseless shooting. now we're going to take a quick look at some of our other news stories we're following for you this morning. donald trump is campaigning in louisiana alongside chris christie, one of his potential running mates. >> trump is fresh off a trip to capitol hill, where he met with republican lawmakers. he called for party unity. the exchanges, we're told, were tense at times as questions were raised about his controversial statements and tweets over the last few months. some republicans say they were encouraged by what trump had to say while others were unimpressed.

meanwhile, former rival, you see there, ted cruz accepted trump's invitation to speak at the convention, but stopped short of endorsing him. vice president joe biden is hitting the campaign trail as well today, joining hillary clinton in his hometown of scranton, pennsylvania. the joint appearance comes as the state department reopens its investigation into clinton's private e-mail server. the internal review was put on hold until the fbi's investigation was completed. this could lead to some state department staffers losing their security clearances. fbi director james comey vigorously defended the decision to not prosecute hillary clinton after more than four hours of testimony on capitol hill. >> they accused of showing a double standard for powerful people but comey insisted clinton was not given special treatment. and he denied the timing of his announcement was planned with the white house. >> look me in the eye and listen to what i'm about to say. i did not coordinate that with anyone. the white house, the department of justice, nobody outside the

recapping our top story out of dallas this morning where gunfire erupted during a protest march. police say snipers targeted police officers staged at that march, calling it an ambush-style march. >> 11 officers were shot, at least 5 are dead, 6 seriously injured and at least one bystander was hit in the leg by a bullet. three people are in custody and a fourth suspect, we're told, has been exchanging gunfire with police. saying he intended to harm more people. that standoff taking place at el centro college garage is finally over but it's been a tense night in dallas. >> some of the first images we saw following that ambush in dallas came, as you'd expect, from social media. i want to show you some. this was a scene on the street -- or this was a scene inside, actually, el centro college. a college that is right nearby as many people were trying to hunker down and get in place.

we're still at the corner of lamar and ross in the west end of dallas. this is considered part of downtown dallas, but for those who are natives here, for those who live here, the shots of gunfire at such rapid succession is unheard of in this neighborhood, unheard of in this community. then to only find out that five officers have been killed in this deadly rage. it followed what was a peaceful protest on the streets of dallas. if you look on social media, you saw photos of demonstrators side by side with police officers, with smiles on their faces. no one could have predicted a sniper would have fired down on officers, targeting men and women in uniform. 11 hit in all. 11 officers hit in all. one civilian, as you mentioned earlier. the scene has become quieter here, as we enter an investigation stage. though, we've seen helicopters flying above, we heard flash bangs or some type of explosive sound earlier this morning. we also have seen a number of

fire engines and police cars speeding away from the scene. those streets are blocked off in this dallas neighborhood right now as they continue to investigate the situation. we heard earlier from the dallas police chief, who said they were not sure if they did, indeed, have all of the suspects in custody. but, you know, we want to put a name to some of these numbers because so often we tell you how many people have died, but we don't tell you the who. d.a.r.t., dallas area rapid transit, losing one of their own. officer brent thompson, only 43 years old. the first officer to die in the near 30-year history of d.a.r.t. police. diane and kendis, back to you. >> adrienne, we also heard from the police chief that one of those suspects is threatening more violence against officers, there were threats of possible bombs in the area. what is the latest on the investigation on that front? investigation on that front? >> reporter: we've had rumors that this situation has come to some type of end, but we don't want to give out any information we have yet to confirm.

again, it's quieter here which signals to us that one of two things have happened. either the officers were able to get the upperhand with this shooter or it ended in some type of fashion. we really don't want to say anything that would not be confirmed yet through the dallas police. but we do know we're still awaiting word from them and the investigation continues as to why these shooters were able to get up into the garage and fire on officers, what their real motive was, though it is evident they were out to kill police. diane and kendis. >> absolutely. seemed definitely targeted, when you have hundreds of people there and 100 police officers and 11 officers specifically shot. >> that's right. only one bystander, as well, caught in the crossfire. the police chief said this was an ambush. our thanks to adrienne there. in these kinds of situations, so much information coming through. we appreciate all you're doing this morning. this all happened, keep in mind,

in a very crowded area of downtown. we're now just getting video shot by a student at nearby el centro college. he was with others in a stairwell as those gunshots rang out. >> the college located not far from where adrienne was standing and the college was put on lockdown and everyone was finally evacuated overnight. >> her sister was wounded and undergoing surgery. this is now the deadliest day for law enforcement since the september 11th attacks. >> which is an unbelievable thing to think about right there. the worst attack and deadliest attack on law enforcement in this country since 9/11. question want toe bring in in the meantime, our former fbi agent, steve gomez, who we spoke to a little earlier about how police are handling these protests in dallas and around the country. and the response law enforcement can take moving forward. >> well, you know, they had a command post that was established for this type of protest. i mean, they always do that when they have this special type of event, which this would have been considered given the situation occurring in the two cities, where the shootings -- cop shootings were.

so, there was already a flow of information that was happening during the protest. once the shootings occurred, you can only imagine the level of activity that increased probably hundredfold with just reports from the cops, tips coming in from the public and so on. so, all that information is now being collated, pulled together. they have tons of officers and investigators coming in to do interviews as they have identified suspects, they are going through their electronic, you know, devices, social media and so on and bringing that together. they're contacting family members, neighbors, friends, work associates. they're trying to figure out where they acquired the weapons. so, atf is going to take the lead on trying to figure out the weapons they were using to -- to shoot at the officers, where did they get those weapons, who purchased those weapons. these are all the methods that are tried and true in law enforcement that are going to be

used. and it's going to be an even higher profile and much more intense investigation because of the fact they targeted cops. and that's -- you know, a cop killer is one of the worst things in the world. the fact these two individuals at the very least, if not more, took the step to kill cops. this is one of the biggest cases we've ever seen because it involves cops being targeted and killed. >> our thanks to steve gomez who knows the situation very well, a former lapd officer. president obama has been briefed on the deadly attack in dallas as he attends a nato summit in poland today. >> before those officers in dallas were killed, the president had addressed the police-involved shootings in minnesota and louisiana. that sparked those protests originally. he said the shootings were not isolated but, rather, symptomatic of a broader set of racial disparities. the president also, though, acknowledged the heavy burden on police officers saying, quote, when people say black lives matter, it doesn't mean blue lives don't matter. >> quite interesting now to hear

roughly some six hours after those shots were heard in downtown dallas, a standoff with the remaining suspect is over. earlier that suspect was cornered in a parking garage, refusing to cooperate with s.w.a.t. team negotiators. >> and the police chief said that man was also threatening more violence against police. >> the suspect that we are negotiating with that has exchanged gunfire with us over the last 45 minutes has told our negotiators that the end is coming and he's going to hurt and kill more of us, meaning law enforcement, and that there are bombs all over the place in this garage and in downtown. >> again, that standoff is over. we're also learning more about the bystander injured during the gunfire. a woman who was shielding her sons when she was shot in the leg. >> she had surgery overnight. abc's adrienne bankert is on the scene all night for us. adrienne? >> reporter: good morning.

we're still at the corner of lamar and ross in the west end of dallas. this is considered part of downtown dallas, but for those who are natives here, for those who live here, the shots of gunfire at such rapid succession is unheard of in this neighborhood, unheard of in this community. then to only find out that five officers have been killed in this deadly rage. it followed what was a peaceful protest on the streets of dallas. if you looked on social media, you saw demonstrators of police officers side by side with police officers, with smiles on their faces. no one could have predicted a sniper would have fired down on officers, targeting men and women in uniform. 11 officers hit in all. one civilian, as you mentioned earlier. the scene has become quieter here, as we enter an investigation stage. though, we've seen helicopters flying above, we heard flash bangs or some type of explosive sound earlier this morning. we also have seen a number of

fire engines and police cars speeding away from the scene. those streets are blocked off in this dallas neighborhood right now as they continue to investigate the situation. we heard earlier from the dallas police chief, who said they were not sure if they did, indeed, have all of the suspects in custody. but, you know, we want to put a name to some of these numbers because so often we tell you how many people have died, but we don't tell you the who. d.a.r.t., dallas area rapid transit, losing one of their own. officer brent thompson, only 43 years old. the first officer to die in the near 30-year history of d.a.r.t. police. diane and kendis, back to you. >> adrienne, we also heard from the police chief that one of those suspects is threatening more violence against officers, there were threats of possible bombs in the area. what is the latest on the investigation on that front? investigation on that front? >> reporter: we've had rumors that this situation has come to some type of end, but we don't want to give out any information

we have yet to confirm. again, it's quieter here which signals to us that one of two things have happened. either the officers were able to get the upperhand with this shooter or it ended in some type of fashion. we really don't want to say anything that would not be confirmed yet through the dallas police. but we do know we're still awaiting word from them and the investigation continues as to why these shooters were able to get up into the garage and fire on officers, what their real motive was, though it is evident they were out to kill police. diane and kendis. >> absolutely. seemed definitely targeted, when you have hundreds of people there and 100 police officers and 11 officers specifically shot. >> that's right. only one bystander, as well, caught in the crossfire. the police chief said this was an ambush. our thanks to adrienne there. in these kinds of situations, so much information coming through. we appreciate all you're doing this morning. this all happened, keep in mind, in a very crowded area of downtown. we're now just getting video

shot by a student at nearby el centro college. he was with others in a stairwell as those gunshots rang out. >> the college located not far from where adrienne was standing and the college was put on lockdown and everyone was finally evacuated overnight. >> her sister was wounded and is undergoing surgery. this is now the deadliest day for law enforcement since the september 11th attacks. >> which is an unbelievable thing to think about right there. the worst attack and deadliest attack on law enforcement in this country since 9/11. so we want to bring in in the meantime, our former fbi agent, steve gomez, who we spoke to a little earlier about how police are handling these protests in dallas and around the country. and the response law enforcement can take moving forward. >> well, you know, they had a command post that was established for this type of protest. i mean, they always do that when they have this type of special event, which this would have been considered given the situation occurring in the two

cities where the shootings -- cop shootings were. so, there was already a flow of information that was happening during the protest. once the shootings occurred, you can only imagine the level of activity that increased probably a hundredfold with just reports from the cops, tips coming in from the public and so on. so, all that information is now being collated, pulled together. they have tons of officers and investigators coming in to do interviews as they have identified suspects, they are going through their electronic, you know, devices, social media and so on and bringing that together. they're contacting family members, neighbors, friends, work associates. they're trying to figure out where they acquired the weapons. so, atf is going to be taking the lead on trying to figure out the weapons they were using to shoot at the officers, where did they get those weapons, who purchased those weapons. these are all the methods that are tried and true in law enforcement that are going to be used. and it's going to be an even

higher profile and much more intense investigation because of the fact they targeted cops. and that's -- you know, a cop killer is one of the worst things in the world. the fact these two individuals at the very least, if not more, took the step to kill cops. this is one of the biggest cases we've ever seen because it involves cops being targeted and killed. >> our thanks to steve gomez who knows the situation very well, is a former lapd officer. president obama has been briefed on the deadly attack in dallas as he attends a nato summit in poland today. >> before those officers in dallas were killed, the president had addressed the police-involved shootings in minnesota and louisiana. that sparked those protests originally. he said the shootings were not isolated but, rather, symptomatic of a broader set of racial disparities. the president also, though, acknowledged the heavy burden on police officers saying, quote, when people say black lives matter, it doesn't mean blue lives don't matter.

>> quite interesting now to hear that after all that's happened in the last 12 hours or so. >> that's right. and back in dallas, an emotional scene. the american flag at half-staff. this is outside the dallas police association. >> now, on the group's twitter page, it says, quote, goodwill triumph over this evil and #prayfordallas. it was shocking this morning when we learned of the fifth person, the dpa, dallas police association, tweeting out, we've lost another one. >> that's right. and this news continues to develop this morning. both on the investigation and what's happening with the victims this morning. we know several officers still injured this morning and still dealing with that as well as the civilian in surgery at the moment. still ahead, much more from dallas. plus, our news. fbi director james comey setting the record straight about the investigation into hillary clinton's e-mail server. also breaking overnight, a suspect taken into custody after a series of attacks on the streets of san diego. stay with us, everyone.

we are following breaking news out of dallas this morning where snipers open fire during a protest there. it was just one of many that was happening around the country organized to protest two fatal police shootings in minnesota and louisiana this week. >> demonstrators hit the streets from coast to coast. here in new york city, they marched from union square to times square, chanting and carrying protest signs. about a dozen people were arrested but it was mostly peaceful. also on the west coast, in oakland, about 2,000 protesters marched from city hall to a major highway there, where they blocked traffic, set off fireworks and broke some windows. meanwhile, one of the shootings that was the trigger for those protests was this one, live streamed in minnesota.

the woman seen there in that video spoke about the aftermath. diamond reynolds says it all started when she and her boyfriend, philando castile, were pulled over for a broken taillight. >> reynolds says castile was following the officer's orders and reaching for his i.d. when that officer suddenly shot and killed him, shooting several times. reynolds was remarkably composed during that live stream. but now that reality has set in, she says she's actually consumed with anger, understandably, as well as grief over what she and many others are calling a senseless shooting. now we're going to take a quick look at some of our other news stories we're following for you this morning. donald trump is campaigning in miami today alongside new jersey governor chris christie, one of his potential running mates. >> trump is fresh off a trip to capitol hill, where he met with republican lawmakers. he called for party unity. but the exchanges, we're told, were tense at times as questions were raised about his controversial statements and tweets over the last few months. some republicans say they were encouraged by what trump had to say while others were unimpressed.

meanwhile, former rival, you see there, ted cruz has accepted trump's invitation to speak at the convention, but stopped short of endorsing him. vice president joe biden is hitting the campaign trail as well today, joining hillary clinton in his hometown of scranton, pennsylvania. the joint appearance comes as the state department reopens its investigation into clinton's private e-mail server. the internal review was put on hold until the fbi's investigation was completed. this could lead to some state department staffers losing their security clearances. fbi director james comey vigorously defended the decision to not prosecute hillary clinton in more than four hours of testimony on capitol hill. >> republicans accused the fbi of showing a double standard for powerful people, but comey insisted clinton was not given special treatment. and he denied the timing of his announcement was planned with the white house. >> look me in the eye and listen to what i'm about to say. i did not coordinate that with anyone. the white house, the department of justice, nobody outside the fbi family had any idea what i

new activia fruit fusion. recapping our top story out of dallas this morning where gunfire erupted during a protest march. the police chief says snipers targeted police officers stationed at that march, calling it an ambush-style attack. >> 11 officers were shot, at least 5 are dead, 6 seriously injured. and at least one bystander was hit in the leg by a bullet. three people are in custody this morning and a fourth suspect was exchanging gunfire with police, saying he intended to harm more officers. but dallas city officials confirmed that standoff that was taking place at the el centro college garage is finally over, but it's been a tense night in dallas. well, some of the first images we saw following that ambush in dallas came, as you'd expect, from social media. i want to show you some. this was a scene on the street -- or this was a scene inside, actually, el centro college. a college that is right nearby as many people were trying to hunker down and get in place. and this is a scene on the

street. >> you can see people running for cover there, trying to move away from the area where the shootings took place. in many of these videos you could also hear a barrage of gunfire. we briefly saw and heard some video at the start of the show as well of some witness accounts. you're looking there at that downtown area where we just heard the gunfire. let's listen. [ gunshots ] >> somebody's armed. somebody's really armed to the "t." >> oh, my gosh. >> you can hear a witness saying someone is armed to the "t," dozens of shots there. witnesses on the scene have reported saying it seemed like it never ended. >> it reminded a lot of people -- you remember that bank robbery that took place in los angeles some years ago where those guys were armed with body armor and they just had all these big guns that were shooting up. a lot of people said it reminded them of that. this is downtown dallas. unbelievable. you look at the skyline. those are the buildings you see. those were the shots they were hearing last night. in these chaotic scenes,

civilians being told to move out of the way of law enforcement. man, it's amazing that in this day and age, they hear shots are being fired and immediately people get on their phone and document it all. >> in some cases, people are glad that documentation exists. we'll see if this helps in the investigation now because a massive investigation under way as police try to piece together what happened >> absolutely incredible moments overnight. of course, we'll get back to dallas in a moment. first, to los angeles where seven members of a latino street gang have been charged with fire bombing four homes of black families. police say the gang's goal was to drive them out of a housing project. if convicted, the men could face life in prison. also in california, a suspect has been charged for violent attacks against homeless men in san diego. authorities say 36-year-old anthony padgett has been charged with murder and attempted murder. two of the victims were killed, two others seriously injured. the attacks came while the men were sleeping. two of them were set on fire. authorities have not said

whether padgett is their only suspect. in texas, a 12-year-old girl is dead and her mother critically injured after a partial bridge collapsed near houston. investigators say a garbage truck hit the bridge, knocking a piece of concrete into their vehicle. police are investigating the incident as a homicide this morning. a boy was able to escape from the backseat of that car. coming up, more on the developing story out of texas. also, some emotional moments as beyonce brought her performance to a halt to remember. and signs of support this morning for police in dallas coming from all over this country this morning. we'll be right back.
