. abc 7 news starts right now with live, breaking news. and it is happening right now in newark, sky 7 hd above a recycling center on fire right now. stacks of plastic, cardboard and other materials in an open area of the grounds burning ferociously. you could see this thick, black smoke stretching for files above the fire. >> that is incredible to see. this is the western pacific pulp and paper recycle center on smith avenue and cherry street. firefighters are there trying to put out the flames. we have on the phone right now daniel skilling who lives near the plant and been watching the fire from the start. daniel, thank you for joining us. tell us what you are seeing. >> right now, i'm right across from cherry and i've seen the fire since probably about 3:00.

i got off work around the corner. just a little black smoke and 20 minutes later it is this huge cloud and it doesn't even look like it will slow down yet. >> it looks as if it is still fully ungulfed and involved. daniel, it is obviously incredible -- an incredible amount of thick, black smoke. could you smell it from where you are. >> i'm upwind from it, thankfully. >> what are you seeing in terms of fire sponsor people being told to stay back from the area what is going on in terms of that? >> i don't really see too much fire department. they are probably all at the fire. i'm maybe two blocks back so maybe closer up they are telling people to get away but -- >> daniel, thanks very much. this is daniel skilling who lives near the plant that is burning. as you could see the western pacific pulp and paper recycling center which is on smith avenue and cherry street. daniel, thanks for coming on. >> unbelievable smoke. >> well thank you for joining us this afternoon, i'm ama daetz.

>> and i'm dan ashley. larry beil has the day off. we'll go back to that story. but the terrible story today is the terrible shooting in dallas. >> we have a lone shooter. >> showdown he's in the damn building right there. >> america in crisis. five officers were killed and seven people were wounded in dallas last night and today we're learning more about the victims and the accused sniper. abc news reporter marcy gonzalez has the latest. >> reporter: today heart-break in dallas following the loss and chaos here overnight. five police officers killed. seven others along with two civilians injured. when a sniper positioned above a peaceful protest against police brutality started shooting, targeting police officers. >> he said he was upset about the recent police shootings. the suspect stated he wanted to kill white people, especially

white officers. >> reporter: with no cover from the stray of bullets from above, officers risk their lives saving others. one seen here taking on the gunman. that officer killed in the final act of bravery. among the victims, 43-year-old transit officer brent thompson married just two weeks ago. and a iraq war veteran patrick zamarripa. >> our hearts are broken by this loss. we are one people and we stand together. >> reporter: the suspect micah johnson killed in the standoff. police searching the former army reservist home and questioning three other suspects. >> this is a well-planned, well thought-out, evil tragedy. and we won't rest until we bring everyone involved to justice. >> reporter: and johnson claimed

he left bombs hidden downtown. police have found nothing. but still have the area blocked off as they search. marcy gonzalez, abc news, dallas. >> and we are learning more about the dallas officers who were killed. >> 55-year-old michael smith was a sergeant with the dallas police department. senior corporal lauren ahern served 14 years with the dallas police department. >> michael krol also worked for dallas police and so did officer patrick zamarripa who survived three tours of duty in iraq to be killed at home. you saw newly wed brent thompson trained police in iraq and afghanistan. now according to the army, the suspect, michael johnson, served in the army reserve from 2009 to 2015 and did one tour of duty in afghanistan. >> house minority leader nancy pelosi said the shooting in dallas tears at the heart of everyone american. >> for the families of the police officers, thank you.

thank you for sharing your loved ones with us. we pray that it is a comfort to you that so many people mourn your loss and are praying for you at this sad time. >> well pelosi said the sniper had an agenda of hate and called for nonviolence to end what she calls senseless killings everywhere. >> many prominent voices are sounding off in social media in the wake of escalation of violence. >> kristen sze is looking at the tweets capturing a lot attention. >> dan and ama, we with politicians and celebrities and what they are saying, but not this time. a picture so moving, it is being shared on twitter today, even though it was posted a year ago. one black and one white officer each pointing at the other with the words his life matters written on their hands. this was at the trinity police department in texas. >> and a tweet from washington, d.c. aaron smith that has struck

a chord. i don't want black men shot at traffic stops or cops shot by snipers and i don't want kids shot at school. i don't want any of this. this has been re-tweeted 60,000 times. gabby give orders has a plea. we have to do better than this. this is not the america we strive for. and kevin durant tweets, another black man killed and another young man killed and without a dad and think about that for a second. and 49er tweets time to take a stand so our children can live in a peaceful and united world. we'll to gather reaction and have more on abc 7 news at 6:00. >> kristen, thank you. president obama has ordered flags lowered to half-staff to honor the officers who lost their lives in the attack in dallas. the proclamation applies to flags flown at the white house and on all public buildings and grounds and will remain at half-staff through tuesday. the community is coming

forward to pay their respects at local police departments. the napa police department posted this image the facebook page and said they are humbled and appreciative of the community support. the police department in san jose has increased staffing in response to the ambush in dallas. all officers in patrol will work on pairs through the end of the weekend. police say you might see less patrol cars or fewer patrol cars on the street but it does not mean response times will be any longer. oakland police arrested five people out of a crowd of nearly 2,000 who showed up at a rally last night to protest police violence. >> protesters gathered at the plaza outside of oakland city hall about 7:00. by 8:30, they were on interstate 880, stopping traffic completely in both directions. >> more protests are expected tonight. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley joins us live with more. >> reporter: this is certainly a week of heightened emotions over police use of force on black suspects and also now police

fears of retaliation and all of that is playing out on the streets of oakland. this was the scene on interstate 880 in oakland last night. gridlock as 1,000 protesters angry over two more police shootings in minnesota and louisiana branched off from another thousand protesters on city streets and took over the freeway, refusing to leave. >> the freeway was closed for five hours. is that going to happen again tonight? >> no, that is not -- well, that is not our plan to happen. >> reporter: chp said they were caught off guard and had to bring in support from outside of the oakland area. they made two arrests. tonight they have more officers on stand-by. in oakland, there were five arrests for smashed windows and people throwing bottles at officers. red paint was smeared on the broken door to the administration building with anti-police graffiti. >> we still have a couple of identifications to make and we'll be using social media

tools to make that identification so we anticipate more arrests. >> oakland police have been ordered to ride together and not solo after the shooting in dallas. >> officers are feeling stressed. they are more on edge. >> reporter: the oakland mayor urged people to vent frustration over police shootings in video testimonials. saying, we can give public voice to the private pain so many of us are feeling right now and gather the community's feedback using the hashtag black lives matter and oak voices. another protest set for 7:00 tonight at city hall. i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. now our coverage of the shootings in dallas and the impact of protests here in the bay area will continue throughout the evening. >> and tonight there will be an abc news special on the shootings in dallas. america in crisis, ambush in dallas airs right here on abc 7 at 9:00 p.m. >> be sure to tune in for that. it is a powerful program. but let's turn to the weather now. another gray day for much of the

bay area. >> spencer christian is here with what we could expect for the weekend. >> we are hoping for a warm-up at some point over the weekend. a look at live doppler 7 hd. a lot of clouds around and breaks of blue sky as well. and it is a bit breezy but not very gusty yet. we do have gusts of 28 mile-per-hour at sfo. but other locations just breezy. winds up to 13 miles per hour in oakland, 20 at fairfield. here is the view from the rooftop camera over the bay under blue skies this way. 61 in san francisco, 68 in oakland. we have low clouds and fog at the golden gate and current temperatures of mid-80s at santa rosa, fairfield, concord and livermore and 70 at napa and novato. the forecast showing you the push during the evening and overnight hours of low clouds and fog and coastal drizzle, along the coast and around the bay. there may be spotty drizzle overnight and early morning hours. but a change is coming our way. a warm-up will begin before the

let's update the breaking news. sky 7 hd above a recycling facility in newark where placstc and other materials are burning at smith avenue and cherry street. >> the fire is sending this hume plume of thick black smoke and firefighters are concerned it could spread to nearby businesses. so far no one is hurt. >> lyanne melendez is on the phone with more on this. >> reporter: we're on the highway on 880, dan, because it is hard to get here. traffic has been um -- just huge. and so is this plume that you could see clearly from the

highway. it is pretty huge. and we were coming from san lorenzo and you could see it from there. and i'm sure you could probably see this plume from even further away. now, i'm told that this is a plant that has been in existence since 1983 and he ises about 30,000 tons of tape a month and i think -- i think that is why we're seeing such a huge amount of just a cloud of just fire. and so we are, again, inching our way towards a fire. it is an industrial area of town and that is a good thing because we are assuming there aren't many structures nearby. so again, it is proving to be a challenge just to get there. >> i can understand, lyanne, when you look at the sky pictures from sky 7 hd. we have covered dozens of fires over the years but we seldom see

this much thick, black smoke like this. it is pretty intense. lyanne, are you still there. >> reporter: i'm still here and i'm just going past sort of where i can see where the fire is -- is originated. that's just about a few -- maybe a mile away or so. and just about two miles away i'm being told. so we are very close to where it is. but again, i mean, it takes a lot -- it just covers basically part of the sky here. and i think part of the -- of the reason why we're going so slow is that people are stopping to see this. because it is quite impressive, dan. >> yeah. it certainly is. and we talked to somebody who was a couple of blocks away earlier saying fortunately the smoke wasn't blowing in his direction. but obviously it is a big concern as we're looking live from sky 7 hd. you can see the firefighters

putting the water on this. but this is just a huge fire with all of that thick smoke. and we actually have some video that abc 7 news viewer eric jenson shared with us. this is video from the ground, as you could see. he was right there when the fire started. we are glad to say he is safe. but a lot of people who spotted this the smoke are sending pictures and video using the #abc 7 now and you could do the same thing if you could safely take any videos we would like to see them and post them with the #abc 7 and we could find them and feature them on air and online like we just did. >> katherine diaz is on the telephone. she is a neighbor not far from the scene in newark. katherine, are you there? katherine, do we have you on the phone. >> yes, i'm here. >> thanks for coming on. tell us what you are seeing and have seen in the last hour or so. >> well, we just -- about an hour ago we heard a lot of

helicopters and ambulance and fire trucks. so we came outside and just saw a lot of black smoke. at the end of the street, we are on fifth avenue and that is where the recycle plant is, half a block away from it. and there were flames up in the air. we weren't sure if it was a residence and now we know it is the factory. >> thanks, katherine, very much. katherine diaz. >> we continue to monitor this recycling fire. this is in newark. this is smith avenue, where she is and cherry street is where this is happening. >> and look beyond the picture, the flames and the smoke from sky 7 hd, you could see this is a -- a pulp and paper plant. you could see more potential fuel on the periphery of the shot. more things that could potentially burn. and of course, as you know paper goes up like crazy. and the pulp and the chemicals that may be involved is why it is producing so much black smoke like this. but as you could see, there is

still, from the live pictures from sky 7 hd, a lot more potentially that could burn around the fire. >> a lot of plastic likely involved as well. this is western pacific pulp and paper to be specific. and we're told that the smoke is actually heading -- you could see it going off to the right of your screen. it is an eastward motion right now. so hopefully most of the people could stay out of the -- stay away from the smoke that is going. but we should check on the weather conditions in the area. >> public health department is following this and paying attention to what they need to tell people in the area. and as ama mentioned, the weather a factor. spencer christian could track that and give us a sense where the wind is blowing this smokestack. >> the weather conditions should not be a significant factor in fighting this fire. it is not hot in newark. temperatures only 68 degrees. wind is not very strong. steady winds 5-6 miles per hour and occasional gusts between 10-15 miles per hour. so not a major factor but we'll

monitor the winds for you. the conditions over the bay area. looking at live doppler 7 hd and some breaks near the coast and sunshine. 57 in half moon bay to mid-80s in the inland east bay. and this is the view from our sfo camera. partly cloudy skies. and these are the forecast features. fog overnight once again. spotty morning drizzle in the pattern virtually all week long. breezy and cooler tomorrow than today. but a warmer pattern begins on sunday. low temperatures overnight will be mainly in the mid-50s. we'll see maybe a few low 50s near the coast. and in some of the inland east bay locations, lows in the upper 50s like antioch. low of about 59 degrees. the most likely areas to see drizzle overnight will be coastal regions from san francisco southward to points south of half moon bay. over in the east bay, near the bay, we'll see the likelihood of drizzle from oakland down to hayward and union city and fremont and up north on the north coast from point rays over to inverness, a likeliness of

drizzle in that area. tomorrow in the south bay, partly cloudy skies. high temperatures well below average for this time of the year. mainly mid-70s to upper 70s. about 77 at san jose. around 80 at morgan hill. on the, we'll see high -- on the peninsula, mid-70s at red woot city and palo alto. breezy on the coast and cool with highs at pacifica and 61 at half moon bay. downtown san francisco, a high of 63 tomorrow. up in the north bay, upper 50s on the coast. upper 70s inland and calistoga and santa rosa. east bay highs 67 in oakland. 74 in castro valley. and the inland east bay is the mildest region with highs in the upper 70s at pleasant ton, san ramon and wall net creek and 83 at antioch. 79 at livermore. here is the weather seven-day forecast. so the warm-up begins on sunday and inland highs into the mid to upper 80s and for all of next week highs inland around or just

right now a busy freeway ramp is closed because of a big rig crash. a live look near the emeryville ikea. it is still sitting on the ramp connecting to i-880. it was smoking but nothing like when it was earlier on fire. the truck crashed before 1:00 p.m. you could see the flames shooting out from it across the

east bay. stephanie morales sent us these photos of the fire today. and when news happens where you live, share your pictures and videos online with the #abc 7 news. a series of blood drives took place across the bay area tonight as part of a renewed call to let gay and by sexual men donate blood without restrictions. abc 7 was in san francisco south of market district as men brought allies with them to donate in their place. the project more foundation wants to see a ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood lifted. >> anybody under proper discretion has the ability to donate and wants to donate, let them donate. we need the blood. we have low blood supply. >> the food and drug administration enacted the ban when aides reached the community. last year fda lifted the ban for gay men who haven't had sex with another gay man in the last

know better sleep. only at a sleep number store. we begin this half hour with the breaking news that the recycle center in newark is on fire. >> it is sending a black plume of smoke, an amazing amount of smoke pouring eastward for miles. the fire is burning through plastic and other materials at smith avenue and cherry street. >> and we actually have patrick harvey with five star pallet on the line with us. patrick, give us information on where you are and what you are seeing. >> well, right now, we're due west of the facility, two businesses down the street. and there is still a large, black plume of smoke coming off that fire. it is a plastic recycling company. and plastic and fire don't mix

well together at all. >> not at all. so you are a couple of businesses down. how is this impacting you? >> well it was a little bit of a disruption when it broke out. the employees were busy looking at everything. but we just had to tell them to get back to work. and the fire department told us that we would be here until it was put out because the street is closed. so we just try to make the best of it and get through the situation. we're actually glad that the winds are blowing basically due south so that it is blowing it away from our business. so we are not in any risk of the -- >> the fumes -- >> -- the fumes. >> but it is a large fire. >> it is huge. we are looking at live pictures at sky 7 hd. is this area light industrial. >> that is correct. right next to it is a firma corporation which is a construction demolition firm and then we're the next business west which is five star lumber

online to tell the story further. >> but seeing that video, man, smoke is just huge. all right. well turning to our other headlines today. at 4:30, investigators say army veteran michael xavier johnson acted alone when he attacked police in dallas last night. five officers were killed. seven more were injured. a hostage negotiator said johnson wanted to kill officers and white people. an explosive device killed him during a stand-off. investigator searched his home and found bomb-making materials and ballistic vests and other materials. >> they say this was a well planned, well thought out evil tragedy. and tonight world news digs into the shooter's background and those killed in the attack. >> and outside two squad cars are a memorial. they tweeted the flowers left behind to honor the fallen

officers. san francisco evaluated its threat level today. melanie woodrow tweeted a photo of the acting police chief tony chaplain who said there is no threat to the city at this time. the shooting targeted an anti-police rally in dallas. it was one of many across the nation in response to two recent fatal police shootings. today there are calls for unity and peace. abc 7 news reporter karen traverse joins us live from washington with more. >> reporter: good afternoon. the investigations into the police officer-involved shooting continue and the justice department is playing a role in the incident down in baton rouge. today no official campaign events but political leaders were urging calm and peace. in minnesota, no decision on whether a grand jury will be convened to consider charges in the death of philando castile. >> i assure you we will prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law. >> reporter: his death and the

shooting death of alton sterling by baton rouge police officer sparking anger and frustration but bringing together unexpected allies. in los angeles today, 37 cadets graduating in the city police department. outside, a peaceful black lives matter protest led by rappers snoop dogg and the game. >> we never had communication with police and we're trying to start a whole new beginning by getting that dialogue and that communication. and the best thing you could do is seek for information, is seek for communication. because you can't match hate with hate. >> reporter: president obama ordering flags to fly at half-staff for next five days in honor of the dallas victims. and on capitol hill, calls for peace. >> there will be a temptation to let our anger harden our divisions. let's not let that happen. >> reporter: one congressman who represented the dallas area choking up when speaking about his 10-year-old son.

>> and i just don't want anything to happen to him. and just because i want that for my son does not mean that i don't support the police 100%. >> reporter: all of the officers involved in the shootings in minnesota and louisiana have been placed on paid leave while the investigations continue. dan and ama. >> karen, we know clinton and trump canceled campaign events but how are they responding to the attack. >> reporter: both of them did cancel the political events today but we heard from both of them. trump sent out an video an hour ago saying that americans need to stand in solidarity with law enforcement officers. but he also mentioned those shootings in minnesota and louisiana, saying they showed there is still a lot of work to be done to make sure all americans feel safe. hillary clinton did a series of interviews today and told david muir she wants national guidelines on the use of force for police officers and she said every officer should be trained

good. when you have heavy, black smoke, that is problematic. that is heavy pm 2.5 that we are seeing and that is what could be pro problematic with respiratory distress or children or the elderly that live around the area. >> and that produces chemical particulate matter in the area. >> it burns chemicals but most of that gets consumed in the heat of the fire. so the immediate problem is from the particulate matter from the smoke itself. >> so people should close windows an set the a.c. on resick late. >> yes. close windows and doors and the a.c. on resick la -- resick lat. and if you do have respiratory capabilities, up out of the smoke path would be best. >> lisa fassano with the bay area air quality. thank you for coming. >> and you could get the latest

breaking news news on twitter at abc 7 news bay area. >> and part of the monitoring process is spencer christian who is keeping an eye on what the wind is doing at the fire. let me give you a look at weather conditions near the fire. here is live doppler 7 hd first. and i'll move along to the specific location of the fire there in newark. it is 70 degrees right now. relative humidity up to 73%. that is good. winds relatively light, northwest at 5 miles per hour. but this wind may be helpful because it is just strong enough to move and disburse the thick plume of smoke but not factor into fanning the flames. there are occasional gusts up to about 10 miles per hour. here is what neighboring communities could expect over the next hour. a northwest wind about 5-10 miles per hour and pushing the smoke north fremont and they may experience poor air quality until this is under control. tomorrow, airwide, look for fog at the coast.

direction of sunnyvale. i've seen here people in newark wearing smoke masks. that is how thick it was. the fire definitely fueled by the paper and plastic inside the western pacific pulp and paper. you could, at one point, see the -- the sun and then suddenly the smoke would cover the sun and then it would look like dusk out here. now sky 7 has some great aerial shots that you could see. if we can show that. the good news is that no one here has been injured. as you mentioned, this is also an industrial area so homes were never threatened. now let's hear from some people who stopped to see this huge plume. >> people go there every day. and they've got lots of stuff. i've always thought that it would go. but i didn't think it would be when i was around. >> now are you protecting ur
