demonstration necessary minnesota turn view is lent as protesters clash with police. officers in riot gear moved in with smoke bombs. some were injured by rocks and firecrackers. police across the country worked to keep the peace after the recent killing in st. paul and baton rouge where the protesters gathered at the police department. >> too many african-american males are taken away from us and it has to stop. >> in dallas there was a suspicious person in their garage. sharpshooters were on the scene but a sweep turned up nothing. the scare briefly took away from the incredible scene outside the department. two barely visible patrol cars serve as a grim reminder of the

u.s. the president returns to washington, d.c. tonight before heading to dallas. >> as the nation graupels with a weak of violence, this week coanchor martha raditz reports from dallas. the department of homeland security secretary will gus the local and federal response to the smootings. you can watch the full interview on this week at 8:00 this morning right here on abc7. any are outraged over the men of black men at the hands. police in louisiana and minnesota last week. yesterday afternoon some 200 protesters stopped traffic in san francisco. they blocked the entrance to interstate 80 at fifth and bryant streets. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana was there. >> this is where the protesters made their last stand. they have a simple message. >> we want people to know what is actually going on, what police officers are actually out

abc7 news. the blue ribbon panel appointed to look into the inner workings of the san francisco police department is expected to release their final report tomorrow. san francisco police commissioner, dr. joe martinez shall, said the shootings in louisiana and minnesota are less likely to happen here. that's because of the recent reforms of the police department and the blue ribbon panel. back in may that panel found the department lax transparency and accountability. marshall said the culture of policing has to change. >> unless you make the changes, incidents like this, what happened in st. paul and baton rouge, are liable to happen again. the goal is to make the change. >> he credits the new interim chief for the changes within the department. panel will release their final report tomorrow morning. today the university ame's church in palo alto is set ag

side time for people to come together to talk, pray and support each other. the church creates a save place to vent and express feelings about the recent shootings. it starts at 1:30* this afternoon. in the north bay a fundraiser to help future police officers expanded because of the tragedy in dallas. yesterday k abc7 news where's in american canyon for the california cadet academy's public safety fare. this event raises money for teenagers who are preparing for future careers in law enforcement. this year the volunteers also collected money for the families of dallas officers who were killed. they said last week's event has only strengthened interest in emergency service careers and support for them in napa county. >> it takes a certain type of person. there's a lot of risk and you have to put the needs of the community before yourself at all times. they are to serve and protect us and to have that happen it's kind of scary for anybody.

30th. lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> she was too nice of a person for something to happen to her >> elvira or elvie lived alone in this one-bedroom apartment. they covered every inch of the place hoping to find the 57-year-old. vallejo police arrested these four who they say kidnapped her. her son got the ransom message. >> they got the message they would hurt her if they contacted the police and didn't deliver the amount of cash specified. >> this man was the ringleader and may have been her neighbor several years ago. here's an exert from a facebook quote she wrote. i'm about to have to turn myself in and i need you all to pray for me right now. he was arrested in sacramento. police believe the only motif was money. >> i can't believe it. she didn't have money. she was just barely making ends

go. his kidnapping trial is set to begin in january. in los angeles firefighters are battling a brush fire that burned more than 800 acres. it started yesterday in the stevenson ranch area. officials evacuated at least 700 homes as a precaution but orders were lifted about 9:30 last night. the fire is about is a% contained. one of the most prestigious clay and glass festivals in the nation is happening this weekend on the peninsula. abc7 news was at the palo alto art center at more than 150 clay and glass artists showed off their creations in one of the largest shows of its kind. the two-day free event features both fine and functional art and from collectors throughout the u.s. >> this is the one show they come to every year and if they want to buy clay or glass, they

up in novato it was a warm start for all of you up here in the north and east bay. changes today with the cooler start. a slight thely warmer finish. but once again, we will see the breezy winds. there is the deck of low clouds this morning. very nice start to the day. we will get into a gusty sea breeze today. patchy fog this morning. windy this afternoon. especially at the coast. the winds could be gusting to over 30 miles an hour at times, but lighter inside the bay. still breezy, though. a warming trend. we will see 90s return inland. we are looking at temperatures pretty nice throughout the afternoon, but look at the coast here. by about noontime we are gusting to 30 miles an hour point reyes and 10 to 20 miles an hour around the bay. then right throughout the later afternoon hours it's getting even windier. so that yellow indicates the gusty winds offshore. so beaches, once again, on the cool side. 50s and 60s closer to home. but we will get into a sunny

technology. ice atm requires him to insert it and leave it there for transactions. he forgot to take the card back. >> i walked away unfortunately with the card inside. >> he believes someone watched him type his pin and snatched the card. the person drained his account and deposited this phony check and kept buying. citibank investigated but to his shock denied his fraud claim, saying he could have made those transactions. he had the account 14 years. never made purchases like this but citibank refused to review surveillance video to find out who did. he contacted us. citibank reviewed the case and reversed their decision, returning his money. while the claim was denied initially, it has been honored. >> and the money vanishes. >> david said this time magic couldn't have brought back his money. >> unless you call abc7 on your side and because of them, i was

able to get my money back. >> david tells us city bank reversed the decision after reviewing his 14-year history with the same account. the real take away, make sure you take away your chip card after your transactions. i'm michael finney, "7 on your side". >> visitors to twin peaks in san francisco will notice drastic changes in how they get to and from the scenic overlook. starting wednesday the municipal transportation agency will convert the eastern portion of twin peaks boulevard to a car-free area for pedestrian and bicycle efforts. the western half of the boulevard will be converted from one way to two-way traffic. they also plan to create more designated parking spots on twin peaks. the closer will be a two-year pilot project. an astronaut who was raised in napa is settling into her new home for the next few months, the international space station.

kate rubins exchanged hugs upon the arrival at the orbiting lab on friday night. nike crow biologist will spend the next few months in space studying genetics and how the body changes in microgravity. she will also study out bone mass and cardiovascular systems change while living in space. she graduated from vintage high school in napa. an effort is underway to bring nor greenery and yellow to san francisco's tenderloin. a group of local organizations has launched an effort to plant 50 lemon trees. while the search is on for places to plant them, volunteers are needed to temporarily take care of the trees. anyone interested is encouraged to visit the demonstration garden's booth during today's sunday street events in the tenderloin. >> firefighters saved a kitten from the storm drain yesterday

>> welcome back. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you. sunrise less than 30 minutes away. from this vantage point you get a good view of some of the fog drifting across the bay. there's more of a marine layer out there. the dewpoints are cooler. it's a typically cool summer morning with numbers ranging from 50 morgan hill. 55 san francisco half moon bay, and from sfo of the, not bad. we had delays yesterday. looks nice and clear right now with low 50s napa and novato. 56 fairfield. livermore, you have some fog. anywhere from a degree to about 9 crease cooler this morning. if you are headed out early you will feel that and you will see some fog. but 350's coastside to the mid-80s inland. we will kick up the wind again, as well. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you.

in dallas the downtown police headquarters went on lockdown yesterday, days after a former army reservist shot and killed five police officers. the lock-down came after new threats against officers of suspicious man was spotted in the police parking garage. the s.w.a.t. team searched the area, but never found him. and in minnesota hundreds of protesters marched on to a freeway, blocking traffic in both directions for four hours yesterday. the protest started peacefully, but then demonstrators started throwing objects at police officers. at least the five were injured. st. paul police say the preliminary number of arrests is about 100. and in baton rouge about 100 people were arrested outside police headquarters as tensions reached a boiling point between protesters and police. officers were in full riot gear with shields, helmets, rifles and vests.

and clear yesterday. we had the delays. we are looking at a cool start, but sunny sky and the 70s return to the peninsula. the winds gusty. 50 santa rosa, 52 napa, novato, 57 concord and livermore. we are cooler this morning with temperatures all in the 50s with the most dramatic change from santa rosa and no had sought toe down through san jose and even in the east bay. it's a little cool out there. we will look for patchy fog this morning. and then windy this afternoon. winds could gust in excess of 3t reyes and perhaps half moon bay. but inside the bay it will be lighter and we will look for the warming trend to get underway this week. but we still will have the breezy winds around the bay from time to time. typical summertime weather. by noontime you will notice from point reyes to point arena, all the way down through half moon bay we have the winds anywhere from 20 to perhaps 30 miles an hour.

they continue to build throughout the afternoon. the early evening hours, if we were to extend that to about 7:00. and by sunset, after that the winds should quinn to dial back. but we will be being lacking at the cool numbers coastside. can't manage to get out of the upper 50s here w mid-60s, that's due to the early sunshine around half moon bay and 70s return for santa cruz. looking at a pretty nice afternoon today in santa rosa. finally near 80 degrees. should be the same around the south end of the bay. but still shy of averages. mid-80s there. tomorrow upper 80s. then notice we will see numbers into the 90-degree rank by about wednesday and thursday. around the south bay look for 79. cupertino. 78 milpitas, 82 in los gatos, and some of the warmer colors upper 70s, palo alto, mountain view. but still on the cool side in the city. breezy for the game throughout the evening hours at&t park. 75 in petaluma. look for 82 in napa.

still in the 70s here with low to mid-70s. a little breezy at times. looking at numbers in the mid-80s in pittsburgh. 82 in livermore. the accuweather seven-day forecast looking at numbers coming up just a little bit tomorrow but the real warmth arrives midweek with mid-and upper 90s and staying pretty comfortable around the bay. 60s coastside. carolyn. >> lisa, looks good. thank up. after five years of drought, 66 million dead trees have been reported by the forest service in the southern sierra. and no, sir doing that survey are now flying over northern california forests. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom caught up with the u.s. forest service as they figure out where california's trees are dying and why. >> clear! >> early in the morning the u.s. forest service takes to the sky, soaring just above the tree tops. >> we are out there trying to identify trees of that died fairly recently. >> from 1,000 feet up you can

see them. >> as it dries out the foliage will change from the green color to yellow, red or brown. that's what we are looking for. >> six years of severe throughout. >> the drought and then the beetle able to take advantage of that situation. >> the bark beetle thrives on dry wood. a healthy tree grows new bark to keep the beetles out but a weakened tree is bug food. they can attack otherwise healthy trees and kill them. the foresters have to find out where it's happening. >> we are trying hard to assess the high priority hazard trees, near powerlines or buildings or road. >> once in the sky they use an electronic shorthand to mark down where the dead trees are, how many and without throwing down and without counting anything twice. >> i draw a polygon and then 88,

sunday street event in san francisco comes to the tenderloin. the event will transform a mile of streets in the heart of the tenderloin into community space. this is video from a previous event. glide memorial church is hosting a block party with special activities, including a giant lego build and a dance party. the route collision fulton, larkin, jones and ellis streets. sunday streets runs from 11:00 this morning until 4:00 p.m. up next on the sunday morning news at 6:00, a blockade of officers keeps protesters in marching on to the bay bridge. where protesters are planning on holding another demonstration today. also next, we are learning more about a kidnapping for ransom in vallejo. police want your help finding this woman.
