>> good morning. i'm carolyn tile aer. thanks for joining us on this sunday, july 10th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, nice and sunny. the breeze already picking up in san francisco. over 15 miles an hour at times. live doppler 7hd showing a little bit of fog around half moon bay, elsewhere full sunshine. in san jose you are cooler but already at 64 degrees. mountain view mid-60s. 67 in the city. at the coast the fog is trying to clear. in emeryville low 60s santa

rosa, 673 livermore. you had fog earlier. in santa cruz mid-70s today. right now it's cool, but we will look for the numbers to climb to the 60s and 70s by noontime. by the afternoon we are just a little bit warmer, but the winds are going to be gusty on the coast, breezy around the bay, so that playoff set some of our cooling. but the week ahead, much warmer. i'll have it for you coming up. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. this morning demonstrations continue across the country. protesting the recent police killings of black men. the city of dallas is also dealing with a mass shooting that took the lives of five police officers. we are live in dallas with the latest. good morning, kenneth. >> good morning. there's a lot of focus on the fallen officers. the memorial is growing by the hour. today we are also learning more. protests across the nation

continue. >> demonstration necessary minnesota against police brutality turns violent as protesters clash with police. officers in riot gear came in with smoke bombs. police across the country worked to keep the peace after recent police killings in st. paul, minnesota and baton rouge where protesters faced off with police officers. >> too many african-american males lives are being taken away from us and this has to stop. >> in dallas police surrounded their own headquarters after reports of a suspicious person in their garage. sharpshooters and s.w.a.t. teams were on the scene but the sweep turned up nothing. there was an incredible scene outside the d. two voice barely visible patrol cars are there. the police chief told cnn johnson was planning a much

larger attack than the one carried out thursday. >> we believe that the deaths in minnesota and the deaths in louisiana just sparked his dell losing to fast track his plans and saw the protest in dallas as an opportunity. >> chief brown also said johnson had a journal of ramblings in his home and in the parking garage where he was killed, the man used his own blood to write letters on the wall. and investigators are still trying to decipher it. ab7c news. >> i'm sure the. >> you it's a way for some people to express their feelings. what else are people doing to copy? >> well, carolyn, you are right. they are coming here to cope with we have seen families and parents and that lot of residents come here to the

dallas police office to lay down flowers, candles, notes of support. it's been an incredible scene. you see behind it goes a long. >> thank you. president obama is in spain this morning after attending the nato summit in poland. his visit cut short because of the dallas shootings. the president apologized to the king of spain for his abbreviated visit which was years in the making to emphasize the important reliance between spain and the u.s. president obama returns to washington, d.c. tonight before heading to dallas. demonstrators are planning a peace protest on the marin side of the golden gate bridge this morning at 11:00. they are outraged over the deaths of black men at the hands

of police in louisiana and minnesota last week. and take a look. this is yesterday afternoon. 200 protesters stopping traffic in san francisco. they brought the entrance to the bay bridge and i-890 at fifth and bryant streets. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana was there. >> this is where the protesters made their last stand. they have a simple message. >> we want people to know what is actually going on, what police officers are actually out here doing and getting away with, and it's not okay. >> but the problem is complicated. this round of demonstrations are in response to the officer-involved shooting of at ton sterling in louisiana on tuesday and philando castile in minnesota on monday. they wanted to get on to the bay bridge to shut it down but they were met with a line of police and highway patrol officers. >> we rushed the freeway because that's the only way to get people to listen.

>> lots of people were caught up in traffic in the whole thing. what do you tell them? >> i tell them i apologize for the inconvenience but the only way to get people to look and do something. >> there was a lot of anger aimed at officers during the protests but the sniper shootings in dallas where five police officers were killed did affect protesters. >> i wouldn't wish death upon anyone because i have lost a loved one this senseless violence. >> after five hours the group disbursed without an arrests. abc7 news. the blue ribbon panel appointed to look into the inner workings of the san francisco police department is expected to release their final report tomorrow. san francisco police commissioner, joe marshall, said the shootings in louisiana and minnesota are less likely to happen here. that's because of the recent reforms of the police department and the blue ribbon panel. back in may that panel found the department lacks transparency and accountability.

marshall said the culture of policing has to change. >> unless you make the changes, incidents like this, what happened in st. paul and baton rouge, are liable to happen again. it will take change. the goal has to be to make the change. >> marshal credits the acting police interim chief for the changes within the department. today the university ame's church in palo alto is setting aside some time for people to come together to talk, pray and support each other. the church creates a safe place to vent and express feelings about the recent shootings. it starts at 1:30 this afternoon. in the north bay a fundraiser to help future police officers expanded because of the tragedy in dallas. yesterday abc7 news was in american canyon for the california cadet academy's public safety fare. that event raises money for teenagers who are preparing for future careers in law enforcement. this year the volunteers also

collected money for the families of the dallas officers who were killed. they tell us last week's event has only strengthened interest in emergency service careers and support for them in napa county. >> it takes a certain type of person. there's a lot of risk and you definitely have to put the needs of the community before yourself at all times. they are there to serve and protect us and to have that happen it's kind of scary for anybody. >> yesterday's fair included a bicycle rodeo, a car seat safety check, vehicle inspections and a distracted driving stimulator >> people in the bay area are showing their appreciation this weekend for the men and women helping to keep their community safe. the mountain view police department tweeted this photo yesterday with the caption nothing makes a saturday better than some great tasting lemonade.

♪ ♪ >> a vallejo woman is missing this morning after being kidnapped for ransom. the fbi has been called in to help find 57-year-old elvira babb. she was kidnapped june 30th. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> she was too nice of a person for something to happen to her. >> elvira or elvie babb lived

alone in this one-bedroom apartment. crime scene detectives have covered every inch of the place in hopes of find being the 57-year-old. vallejo police arrested these four, who they say kidnapped babb. her son got the ransom message. >> they got the message they would hurt her if they contacted the police and didn't deliver the amount of cash specified. >> abc7 learned that this man was the ringleader and may have even been ba bbs neighbor several years ago. here's an excerpt from a facebook quote he wrote. i'm about to have to turn myself in and i need you all to pray for me right now. he was arrested in sacramento. police believe the only motive was money. >> i can't believe it. she didn't have money. she was just barely making ends meet. >> she didn't have a car and relied on friends to drive her places. she was last seen at this seafood city store on june 29th and on the 30th her son rushed to her home after receiving the ransom demand,

only to find her apartment empty and her dog dead. >> i think it's terrible somebody could be took like that and we didn't hear anything. >> the more time that passes the more police worry. >> the victim has been gone for over a week so it causes us deep concern obviously. we are hopeful we will be able to locate her alive. >> none of the suspects are cooperating with police. lisa amin gulezian, abc news. >> now you might remember another kidnapping case in vallejo that made national headlines. you remember this. vallejo police originally thought the kidnapping of denise huskins back in 2015 was a hoax. further investigation led to the arrest of matthew muller. investigators say mullens drug and bound her before abducting her and eventually letting her go. his kidnapping trial is set to begin in january.

a san jose woman is asking for help to find a burglar that broke into her car and made off a trunk that belonged to her boyfriend. it happened on thursday at 2:30 in the morning on bush street in san jose. a man wearing a red hoodie smashes the window and takes the trunk, along with other belongings.video caught the burglary as it happened. the man drove off in a black pickup truck. she wants the trunk back saying it holds sentimental items of her boyfriend's. >> here you are looking at drugs, money and guns from a big bust yesterday from contra county detectives. they show this picture of $30,000 worth of heroin, ecstasy , methamphetamine and marijuana. you also see the cash. detectes made the bust on thursday on a home in elkhorn way in antioch. two people now face charges.

>> this fire started yesterday afternoon in the stevenson ranch area. officials evacuated at least 700 homes as a precaution, but those orders were lifted around 9:30 last night. the l.a. county fire captain said flames have come to within feet of homes. the fire is now about 20% contained. >> . >> one of the most prestigious clay and glass festivals in the nation is happening this weekend on the peninsula. abc7 news was at the palo alto art center at more than 150 clay and glass artists showed off their creations in one of the largest shows of its kind. the two-day free event features both fine and functional art and from collectors from throughout the u.s. >> this is the one show they come to every year and if they want to buy clay or glass, they are here t represents the top

today. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. the air is beginning to clear. lots of sunshine up toward the pacific northwest. the weather system keeps us cool again today. in fact, the breeze kicks up around the bay. but cubs the system passes we will look for warmer days. in fact, it's been about a week since we've seen 90s in the inland valleys and they will be come back. there's the last stretch of fog. from the east bay hills camera right now, it's 60 in the city, 62 oakland, 64 mountain view, 59 morgan hill and half moon bay. from our south beach camera, lots of sunshine. 53 santa rosa, 60 napa, 64 in novato with mid-60s by the delta, 63 live more and 66 concord. how much cooler? if you were up earlier, it was a lot cooler. but with all the sun now it's 3 to 7 degrees cooler from san jose to antioch. napa definitely feeling the cooler morning out there. from mt. tam, i wanted to show you this picture.

you still see the fog. a bit of a marine layer. winds are gusty, anywhere from 20 to 30 miles an hour. if you are doing hiking or biking mt. tam up toward santa cruz mountains, also looking at breezy to windy conditions. mostly sunny this morning. the winds throughout the afternoon, especially along the coast. then a warming trend. you are really going to feel it in the next couple case. mainly in the middle of the week. the wind gusts by about 1:00 this average, you see the gusting near 30 miles an hour at point reyes and anywhere from 15 to 20 miles an hour inside the bay. so still right on through 7:00 it's windy at the coast, breezy around the bay, and we will be looking at santa cruz enjoying sunshine for the next several averages. so 74 there. the warmer spot. the winds from ocean beach to half moon bay. you were at 635 yesterday half moon bay. i still think you will see the 60s despite the gusty winds. it will feel good at times

before the sea breeze kicks up. ocean temperatures in the mid-50s. in the south bay look for 80 santa clara, 81 morgan hill and on the peninsula mainly 70 eats for you. upper 60s from palo alto to mountain view. los altos about 79. san francisco plenty of sunshine, mid-60s. about average. again, kind of breezy to windy out there. 82 santa rosa and napa. near east bay a pretty afternoon with 73 in san leandro. 75 in union city. you head inland and just a few 80s coming into the picture. mid-80s from concord to pittsburgh. 81 in pleasanton. the accuweather seven-day forecast, 60 to about 86 today with the wind especially along the coast and tomorrow patchy fog, even warmer but the 90s return tuesday, wednesday and thursday looks to be the warmest days inland. pretty hot. near 80 around the bay and staying in the 60s at the coast. we've got the a.i.d.s. walk.

if a thief uses your debit card, how can you prove it wasn't you using it for purchases? a man had that problem and he came to michael finney for help. >> magician david shows us an old coin trick. >> a kennedy half-dollar. you don't see many of these anymore. they are very rare. >> the coin disappears. but with a few rubs of his palm, >> it looks like it vanishes completely, but it can reappear. >> it reappears. too bad it didn't happen like that in real life. >> it is certainly not any magic book would have taught me to get out of. >> in real life, all the money disappeared from david's bank account. he found out when citibank called asking if he had been running up charges during the night. >> i'm like unless i'm doing

something in my sleep, that was not me. he checked his wallet, his debit card was missing and it was no trick. his debit card has chip technology. his atm requires him to insert it and leave it there for transactions. he forgot to take the card back. >> i walked away unfortunately with the card inside. >> he believes someone watched him type his pin and snatched the card. the person drained his account then deposited this phony check and kept buying. citibank investigated, but to his shock denied his fraud claim, saying he could have made those transactions. he had the account 14 years. never made purchases like this but says citibank refused to review surveillance video to find out who did. >> at this point i was at my wits end. side. citibank reviewed the case and reversed their decision, returning his money. they said while the claim was

denied initially based on the details provided to us, this time it has been honored. >> and the money vanishes. >> david said this time magic couldn't have brought back his money. >> unless you call abc7 on your side and because of them, i was able to get my money back. >> david tells us citibank reversed the decision after reviewing his 14-year history with the same account. the real take away, make sure you take away your chip card after your transactions. i'm michael finney, "7 on your side". firefighters in oakland saved a kitten from a storm drain yesterday after hearing it meow for help. it came on the corner of 12th street and 26th avenue. the kitty's face could be seen peeking out from the grates. firefighters pried open the cover and pulled it free. the kitten appears to be in great shape. much more ahead on the sunday morning news. last week was a tough one for

except for the fact not only will the winds be around the bay, they will be quite gusty at the coast. i will detail that and talk about the warmer weather for the week ahead. >> in dallas the headquarters went on lockdown yesterday days after a former army reserve man shot and killed five police officers. a suspicious man was spotted in the police parking garage. the s.w.a.t. team searched but never found him. in minnesota, hundreds upset with the shooting of a black man there marched on to the highway, blocking traffic in both directions fair hours yesterday. it started peacefully but

demonstrators started throwing objects at police officers. 21 were injured. st. paul police say 100 people were arrested. many of them not from minnesota. in baton rouge about 100 people were arrested outside police headquarters as tensions reached a boiling point between protesters and police after a black man was shot to death by an officer there. officers were in full riot gear with shields, helmets, rifles and vests. protesters started throwing water on police, causing things to quickly escalate. last week's events have exposed the racial divide that still exists in this country and it also sparked a national conversation. abc news nighttime anchor byron pitt has more on the talk so many black parents are having with their children.
