a good tuesday morning to you. we begin with protests around the country as tributes pour in for the five fallen police officers in dallas. >> first up atlanta where hundreds of protesters outraged by two recent police shootings of black men staged a late night sit-in outside the governor's mansion there. and in dallas, more than a thousand people gathered last night for what was an emotional candlelight vigil and the police chief comparing the officers who were gunned down to supermen. president obama is also heading to the city this morning to speak at an interfaith memorial service and meet with grieving families. abc's adrienne bankert as the latest from dallas. >> reporter: in a moving and tearful ceremony fellow officers spoke of their fallen friends and brothers and vowed that this difficult time would only make the community stronger. at the candlelight vigil for the five slain dallas officers the community and police side by side. >> if someone thought that what they did was going to tear up

dallas and the state of texas, they were wrong. >> reporter: but we're now learning more about the sniper who targeted white officers and according to authorities was planning a much larger attack. investigators say it was in this middle class neighborhood at a home shared with his mother where micah johnson had a stockpile of bombmaking materials. >> one of the bock techs called me at home to describe his concern of how large a stockpile of bombmaking materials he had. that this wasn't some novice. our plans are to date and timestamp the entire incident with all video footage available. >> reporter: authorities believe the 25-year-old army vet fast tracked his plans to murder police. as dallas remembers those killed, the police chief says he has a solution, for those protesting to become peace officers. he says they're hiring. >> become a part of that solution.

serve your community. don't be a part of the problem. >> reporter: and many more people have been contacting dallas police to join the force in the wake of the shootings. today president obama and the first lady will pay their respects and honor the fallen victims and their families. diane and kendis. >> all right, our thanks to adrienne. and this strange twist in the aftermath of the dallas shootings involving the police chief there. >> david brown said he and his family received death threats almost immediately after the attack. one threat was even posted to facebook but so far they've been unable to identify the source. and the parents of the dallas gunman are speaking out about their son for the first time. his mother tells the blaze she watched her son transform from an extrovert to a hermit after his military service and she says as a kid he actually wanted to be a police officer. the family also insists he never showed any outward signs of hatred for white people. >> i don't know what to say to anybody to make anything better.

i didn't see it coming. i love my son with all my heart. i hate what he did. >> the full interview with micah johnson's parents will air tomorrow exclusively on the blaze tv. the owner of the store in baton rouge where alton sterling was shot by police is suing the city and its police department. abdullah claims police confiscated the store's surveillance system including its video, took his phone and improperly detained him. he also says that he was locked in a patrol car for four hours and not allowed to contact an attorney. in western michigan two bailiffs were shot and killed by a prisoner they were taking to a courtroom. larry darnell gordon allegedly grabbed a deputy sheriff's gun as he was being taken out of a holding cell. police say in addition to the bailiffs he also shot that deputy as well as a civilian woman who were both injured. the bailiffs were retired police officers in their early 60s with more than ten years of experience as court officers.

>> we have broken hearts today for what occurred at the courthouse, and now i'm going to give the names of the deceased who are my close friends, joe zangaro, who was 61 years of age and ron kienzle, who was 63 years of age, so it's with broken hearts we stand here today. >> well, the sheriff says the prisoner wasn't handcuffed because he hadn't before shown a tendency towards violence but gordon was in jail on charges of kidnapping, sexual assault and obstructing police. the two people wounded are expected to survive. now to politic, donald trump is calling himself the law and order candidate and predicting more violent protests across the country. >> trump said that we are a divided nation and relations between police and the african-american community are far worse than people think. we get the latest right now from abc's tom llamas. >> reporter: donald trump announcing there's a new sheriff in town. >> i am the law and order candidate.

[ applause ] >> reporter: with the country locked in a debate about race and policing, trump arguing as president he'd be tough but fair. >> but i'm also the candidate of compassion, believe it. >> reporter: trump acknowledging the police shooting deaths in baton rouge and minneapolis but making it clear he stands with law enforcement. >> it's time for our hostility against our police and against all members of law enforcement to end and end immediately right now. >> reporter: hillary clinton also supporting the police, but in an interview with david taking it a step further. >> do you think police officers are getting a bad rap across this country because of the actions of a few? >> absolutely. i think the vast majority of police officers in our country are serving honorably and bravely and that's why it's very important we support their work,

that we respect their service and at the same time we put in place guidelines to make sure that every police officer understands what is expected of him or her. >> reporter: trump also revealing his search for a running mate is down to four people. recently he's publicly auditioned newt gingrich, new jersey governor chris christie and indiana governor mike pence. the latest name to surface, retired general michael flynn, but he raised eyebrows among conservatives telling martha raddatz he supports abortion rights. >> but i think women have to be able to choose. >> reporter: but a reversal. flynn now calling himself a pro-life democrat. tom llamas, abc news, norfolk, virginia. now to weather and the severe storms that are on the move right now in the upper midwest. take a look. wisconsin and michigan are in for damaging winds and torrential downpours. the live radar shows it stretching from the upper peninsula down through iowa and kansas. >> that same storm system spawned at least one tornado in

clinton. the meeting raised eyebrows because it came just days before a decision was announced on whether hillary clinton would face criminal charges over her private e-mail server. lynch had said there was no discussion of the clinton investigation. overseas prime minister david cameron spending his last full day as the leader of great britain. cameron is stepping down tomorrow, much sooner than he originally announced. the new prime minister is theresa may. she faces the task of helping britain exit the eu in the wake of the brexit vote. there is a new alert for owners of small suvs. the insurance industry says not 1 of 21 vehicles tested had good headlights. the insurance institute for highway safety says automakers aren't paying enough attention to this basic equipment. in the meantime, it recommends you use the high beams when possible. more than half of all accidents happen at dusk or at dark. and there's been another crash involving a tesla on autopilot.

and if you're flying, expect airport delays in chicago and kansas city. a frightening moment on a united airlines plane in houston as the pilot was forced to abruptly stop the takeoff. >> fearing a possible mechanical malfunction, the pilot slammed on the brakes blowing out two of the tires. it was a big scare for the passengers who had been on their way to denver. >> everybody in the front was like, sparks. we were going so fast. i was scared. my stomach definitely dropped. >> no injuries were reported among the 164 passengers and 6 crew members. it's still not known what mechanical issue was detected on board the aircraft. for the second time a potentially deadly bacteria that can't be killed with antibiotics has been detected here in the u.s. doctors discovered the antibiotic-resistant e. coli bacteria in a patient who underwent surgery at a new york hospital. the bacteria did not respond to the antibiotic that doctors used as a last resort. a similar infection was reported in pennsylvania earlier this year. the man accused of killing three homeless men in san diego

has been released after his arrest last week. authorizes say they don't have enough evidence to prosecute anthony padgett despite his conviction for lighting a homeless man on fire in 2010 and police say he resembled the man seen on surveillance video. the latest fly a hot air balloon around the world has begun. >> a russian adventurer took off from australia on a solo flight. the 64-year-old hopes to beat the current record of 13 days from 2002, and that was set by american steve fossett. well, there won't be a farewell tour, no big announcement show on espn, just a simple announcement, very typical of this player. tim duncan is retiring. >> that's right. he is walking away quietly after 19 seasons, 5 nba championships, all on just one team, the san antonio spurs and, by the way, that team made the playoffs every year he was on it. >> very impressive. and duncan, besides one of the greatest players of all time for the nba, he's probably the greatest power forward ever in pro basketball.

and baseball, in the meantime, all-star game tonight in san diego. >> last night the game's heavy hitters were center stage. let's get highlights now from espn. >> good morning, america. i'm steve levy from the set of espn's "sportscenter." kind of a quiet few days in sports with only one real game in town and that was the home run derby in the town of san diego. giancarlo stanton leading off the home run derby against todd frazier. got some advice from his teammate jose fernandez, and it's working out. how is the western metal supply company doing? and stanton wasn't done. sends another one, this into the third deck in left field. stay classy, san diego. stanton had 20 of the 22 longest home runs in the competition. a few pitches later, it's stanton again. another shot, the white sox looking out for their guy before the final tweeting, "we demand that giancarlo be checked. no way he's human.
