traveled to dallas today to pay their respects to the five officers shot and killed by a sniper last week. they were among the crowd of law enforcement from across the country attending funerals for three of the fallen officers this afternoon. spouses, partners, and family members said a final goodbye to officer brett to haveson, he and corporal lorne ahrens were among those ambushed. the killings after the police shot and killed two black men in minnesota and louisiana sparking protests across the country. today, the son of the louisiana man killed begged for unity. >> everyone needs to approach this with the right way, with peace. no violence, none whatsoever. >> dallas police officer michael krol's funeral is on friday. at the white house today, president obama brought together

on foot who then shot him execution style. he was shot several times. now, ground video this time of a person in that white car is crucial. they were behind the victim's car and were able to give a really good description of the shooter. >> we're trying to see what is the correlation between the person that we have detained and our victim, was this a targeted, purposeful murder or was this some type of road rage or some type of encounter that led to gun violence? >> reporter: and they are still looking for that gun. the person detained did not have a gun on him. now, the victim we are told is described as a hispanic male in his 30s. i'm live in alameda county, leeann melendez, "abc7 news." >> thank you very much. we are learning tonight of a

vietnam veteran's heroic actions. mikhail rushed to the side of a armored truck guard who had just been shot several times in windsor. the robbers set off and he rushed to help the wounded guard. he was able to stop the bleeding until paramedics arrived. >> he was laying on the ground saying, i'm dying, i'm dying, i'm going to die. and i basically said, you're talking, so that's good. >> the two suspects were later captured in napa county. the first was taken into custody on a stretcher. an officer rammed a patrol car into him after the suspect shot at the officer. after hours of searching, a chp chopper found the second suspect in a creek bed. a joint team of federal agents and police flooded an east oakland neighborhood looking for thieves who burglarized a couple of gun

oakland. >> they stopped the traffic and they disappeared. the bus stopped coming, they turned people around going the opposite direction. >> reporter: evidence technicians hauled it away. in a joint operation, police and federal agents are investigating whether the robbery is connected with one this morning in fulsome that netted two dozen hand guns. thieves jumped a fence and broke a window at this gun store. all together, 240 guns were stolen in all these heists. police won't say much about the investigation except they and the feds are working together. >> this is another instance where the oakland police department partnered in collaboration with outside the department and agencies. >> reporter: eric thomas, "abc7 news." two people will have to find

the i-80 smart core. >> going into effect on i-80, and here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza right now. >> laura anthony has more. >> reporter: today was just a test run, but these are a sign of things to come on the i-80 corridor, the most congested stretch of freeway in the bay area. at least during morning commute areas. after years of planning and construction, a new i-80 smart corridor will go live. a process that will occur in stages over the next two months. it's the first of its kind in california. >> it has all of the elements in it. all of them together is going to be very helpful. >> reporter: the idea is to use technology to reduce congestion with realtime information relayed to drivers through a series of electronic signs, on the freeway and on detours, like

san pablo avenue, will green lights will be extended, if necessary, to keep cars moving. >> it is going to provide information to drivers about which lanes are opened or closed, as they approach an incident scene. >> reporter: it includes meter lights that adapt to traffic conditions. there are four to five accidents per day on the accident, causing 25% of the congestion. >> a lot of times when we have an incident, a lot of our goal is to direct traffic around that. we use that with flare patterns or patrol cars. so that could be key. >> reporter: for all the good intentions, the smart corridor will only work if drivers pay attention to the signs. caltrans plans to have the system fully functionable by labor day. changes are in the works for bay bridge in an effort to speed up the drive across that span.

the bay area hired a company to lead the effort to upgrade the bridge's metering light system. the current system dates back to 1974, and the upgrade will include realtime algorithms, designed to reduce traffic jams. emergency crews rushed to the gintech building today in south san francisco. two workers were taken to a hospital as a precaution, but officials said the chemical spill was not a public safety threat. there were no evacuations. the number of charges doubled today against a man accused of killing cats in the south bay. a group called justice for our cats held a rally outside a court hearing for robert farmer. he's now charged with mutilating or killing 21 cats in san jose. pet owners have gathered outside

this is "abc7 news." pop-up restaurants are wildly popular as you probably know in san francisco. and the hottest of them all today was being run by high school students. "abc7 news" was at o'connell high school as students from a culinary class opened up their own pop-up pizzaria on campus. the teacher watched over the would fired oven to make sure everything was done properly and safety. the course also taught students how to run a business. >> it's difficult. but totally worth it. you see the smile on people's faces when they eat it. it's like, wow, i satisfied that person. it's a good feeling. >> customers agree. a lot of them tried the pop-up restaurant today and gave them a

hacking, and a local company that says it has a solution. this at a time when many carmakers still don't believe this is much of a problem. it's like a re-enactment of a mad max movie. this security camera shows a vehicle driving down a san francisco street at night with a person perched on the window sil. the vehicle slows down as it approaches the parked suv. suddenly, the interior of the suv lights up. the window sitter scrambles out of his or her car and into the now unlocked suv. you are witnessing a car hacking. watch as the thief digs through the center console looking for valuables. this suv belongs to a guy we'll call rich. >> i think they learned how to hack the cars, and they're going on a scavenger hunt. >> reporter: i first told you about this three years ago. with these hackers, they were caught on camera in southern

california. since then, through a series of reports, i've shown you car hackers doing their dirty work here in the bay area and across the country. surprisingly, law enforcement has never confiscated one of these electronic hacking devices from a criminal, and that has led to a debate. do the devices really exist? peter york -- >> the police are now aware of this and the car companies are the last one to acknowledge that there's a problem. part of it is because they have no defense right now. >> reporter: peter doesn't that one of the hacking devices either but has something better -- a solution. this device plugs into the on board port located under the dash. it's paired with an app downloaded to a smartphone. when a hacker targets a car, the horn blairs and the lights flash. and the doors will be relocked.
